Steven has over 25 years' experience as an actuary in financial services which has included leading Close Brothers Wealth Management during the launch of their non-advised offering; creating the world's first art-focused wealth advice offering for Christie's; working as part of the team that formed Barclays Wealth and heading the McKinsey UK Savings and Investment Group. Steven founded ManyPets (www.manypets.com), which is disrupting the world of pet insurance through the innovative use of tech, and is building a business to become an irresistible employer that is obsessive about customer service. In April 2019 Steven was included in the London Business School Review of 30 People Who Are Changing The World. Highlights from the Show Steven is an Actuary, who has worked in several different larger, corporate businesses to build startups within them before leaving to start his own business Steven did a lot of work for insurers, but intentionally never went to work for one after leaving consulting because of what he saw as an unfair way consumers were treated by large corporate insurers He talked to a close friend and colleague about leaving their corporate jobs to do something different and better in 2011/2012 The idea they came up with was to build communities inside of insurance to help individuals with niche insurance needs get access to better coverage than they'd be able to get on their own Better, to them, meant better around price, product and customer experience What they were building, which they called Bought by Many, was a digital broker before that was really a thing, with a hope of getting better access to product for their customers, but they still struggled to get them a better customer experience, so the solution was still not really solving the problem they focused on They discovered that the underlying brand of the insurer didn't matter as customers kept thinking Bought by Many was their insurer, and would complain to them when the insurer was doing a poor job on claims, which suggested to them that they could get into insurance despite a lack of an insurance brand They surveyed their various community members across all the spaces they had coalesced around, like pet ownership, cycling, travel and more, to see what products seemed to have the most interest, and what needs their members had around those products to know what needed to be developed to have something successful BBM's biggest and most engaged community was pet owners, and their needs lead to seven new pet insurance products that had not existed on the market yet They also needed to define a totally new customer experience, taking six months to define a totally different customer journey, launching in 2017 They added travel in 2018, and then small business coverage They struggled to manage the growth across these three product spaces, and refocused on pet insurance, and set a vision of being the leading pet insurer in the world, leading them to expand to Sweden (where pet insurance had originated), and then to the US They are a tech-focused business, using the scale they've built to leverage their tech investment to deliver a more efficient, smooth customer experience, using the data their tech generates to keep doing better When the pandemic hit, they saw many things change, firstly that they easily went remote while most of their competitors couldn't They also realized many people would be struggling financially, and may not be able to pay for the existing products, so ManyPets created a more stripped down coverage that met the basic needs people would have to avoid catastrophic pet health bills They also launched in the US in the midst of the pandemic in March 2021, and 6 months later, had a half million pets insured This episode is brought to you by The Future of Insurance thought leadership series (future-of-insurance.com) from Bryan Falchuk. My guest on the podcast today is Samantha Bradford. Sam is a financial advisor and money mindset coach and has a long pedigree in the corporate financial world. But when she made the jump to setting up her own business, Simplicity Financial Planning, she found that mindset, especially for women, was a big hurdle to independent wealth and financial growth. So we're focusing today on the mind blocks that stop us reaching our true earning potential. We discuss the different money archetypes and Sam shares her thoughts and ideas for shifting our money mindset from one of lack and scarcity to one of abundance and opportunity. Sam says: "2 Years ago, I followed my heart and stepped away from my employed adviser role with Barclays Wealth and set up my own business. I named my business Simplicity because I was frustrated with how complicated information within the financial services industry is to understand, when it is so important for people's long time financial future. Time after time I've witnessed a client's inertia rather than them risking ‘getting it wrong'; I've seen clients being talked down to and just plain not understanding what's being shared with them. It doesn't have to be like that and so I set up Simplicity. Our aim is to put our clients at ease around money and help them see things differently. During the past 18 months, I have also focused on the emotional side of money and am now a qualified Money Coach. I founded and run the Women's Wealth Canvas where our mission is to help women build an enduring wealth plan through education, community and empowerment. It's a 12 week programme designed to help women dream big and feel confident around money and money matters. I also have my own Podcast (‘Financial Chat from the Chicken Coop – how to grow your financial freedom') which educates around money topics and money emotions. You can find out more about the work Sam does via her website Simplicity Financial Planning, connect with her on LinkedIn and Instagram or by joining her free Facebook Group The Wealth Canvas And of course if you love a good podcast (which you obviously do as you're here!) check out Sam's podcast Financial Chat from the Chicken Coop

On this episode, Sabine VdL interviews Steven Mendel, CEO and Co-Founder of Bought By Many, an InsurTech startup that is really well known across the UK market with a new brand launched in the US under the brand name "ManyPets." Bought By Many is making the world a better place for pet parents through its tech-enabled insurance products and services. KEY TAKEAWAYS The first startup I was involved with was in the investment consulting space in the mid-90s, from there I became a management consultant and went on to set up three more startups, all in the finance space but none of them directly to do with insurance. Bought By Many started off in the broader insurance space but over several years we narrowed it down so we only operate in the pet space now. For many years I’d been troubled by the poor way large corporates treat individuals – in particular in financial services – in contrast, they treat other corporates very very well. I felt I had to do something to redress the balance between corporates and individuals in financial services. We asked our pet community members to fill out a questionnaire to understand what they thought of the insurance industry, how they would have made it better themselves and asked what their perfect pet insurance policy would look like. We got 40,000 responses and created seven brand-new go-to-market products in September 2016. Instead of going live, we took the opportunity to reimagine every step of the customers’ insurance journey so that when we launched in February 2017 there was nothing about the experience that bore any relation to anything else that they would have seen in the pet space anywhere before. We became a double unicorn in eight and three-quarter years. But, in truth, I can’t get excited about the valuation at all. It doesn’t change in any way the business, the people we want to recruit, our existing staff, our focus on our customer base, our focus on the pets and our focus on the pet parents. It’s an important milestone, of course, but it has not changed us as a business one single piece of the way. BEST MOMENTS ‘Our first TV advert was at the very beginning on direct to household advertising, and we were able to work with Ridley Scott’s production studio to create something genuinely different and quirky.’ ‘The idea behind Bought By Many was creating communities of individuals who had similar but niche insurance needs and to help them get access to better insurance – price, product and customer experience.’ ‘Our Net Promoter Score has never been below 70.’ ‘Pet owners do talk, they want to know what pet food you use, what vet you go to and who insures your pet. Having members of ours who advocate in the marketplace is really important for us and has massive knock-on economic benefits, of course.’ ABOUT THE GUEST Steven has over 25 years of experience as an actuary in financial services which has included leading Close Brothers Wealth Management during the launch of their non-advised offering; creating the world’s first art-focused wealth advice offering for Christie’s; working as part of the team that formed Barclays Wealth and heading the McKinsey UK Savings and Investment Group.Steven founded Bought By Many, which is disrupting the world of pet insurance through the innovative use of tech, and is building a business to become an irresistible employer that is obsessive about customer service. In April 2019 Steven was included in the London Business School Review of 30 People Who Are Changing The World. https://boughtbymany.com/ ABOUT THE HOST Sabine is a corporate strategist turned entrepreneur. Dan Egan is the Directory of Behavior Science and Investing at the online advisor, Betterment. In launching this rather unique career, Dan levered a Masters degree in Decision Science at the London School of Economics into a role as Behavioral Finance Specialist at Barclays Wealth in London before moving on to Betterment. With 15 years operating at the cross-section between human behavior and markets he is one of the world’s foremost experts in this field. To kick off the discussion I wanted to know: What do investors really want? Not what they say they want, or what economists say they should want, but what their day-to-day behaviour says about what they actually want in practice. And moreover, how can advisors avoid disappointing them? We also spent a while discussing the idea of nudging. I wondered about the type of nudges that Dan’s research suggests might be helpful and how he thinks about navigating the fine line between nudging and manipulation. Lastly we discussed how Dan’s understanding of human behavior factors into Betterment’s portfolio construction and lessons learned along the way. Dan is a data junkie and his unique perch has allowed him to gather critical insights into how humans interact with markets. I came away with some practical insights applicable to almost every facet of our investment business. Please enjoy my conversation with Dan Egan.

Over the past six years I have built up quite a body of work here on MeaningfulMoney. And that's especially true when it comes to how to invest. In today's show I am going to bring together some of the best investing resources on the site and try to fit them into a path to take you from zero to elite investment skills. Podcast: Subscribe in iTunes | Play in new window | Download Sponsor Message This podcast is brought to you with the help of Seven Investment Management, a firm of investment managers based in London. They specialise in multi-asset investing, bringing institutional investing techniques to ordinary people like you and me. 7IM put their name to my show and to my site because they believe in what I'm doing, trying to get decent, easy-to-understand financial information out to the world. I'm very grateful to them for their support. You can see what they're up to at 7im.co.uk How to invest With 303 videos and 149 podcasts here on MM it can be hard to find what you need, though there is a very efficient search system. I am in the process of designing and building a new home page which will hopefully help new visitors find their way round, but until that is done, this post should help you navigate the best stuff when it comes to investing. Of the resources listed, more are podcasts than videos. Many of the videos are somewhat out of date now, and while I am redoing some of them, the podcast is generally where the meat is. Ready? Here are eight steps to become and investing ninja: Step 1 - Get into the right mindset Video number 246 talks about getting into the savings mindset. You need to start form a good place, as the changes you will make need to be deep-seated to last for a lifetime. This involves being future focused, getting mad at the financial services industry, and committing to taking control of your own future. Step 2 - Get started For those who are right at the very start of their personal finance journey, and are looking to pay off debt and begin saving for an emergency fund, I have a dedicated index page just for you. If you have done those things, and you're looking at how to invest, what's next? Podcast session 6 was a chat with the erstwhile Justin Urquhart Stewart of my sponsors, Seven Investment Management. In that show we agreed that investing should be dull, above all. You should understand your risk tolerance (more in a minute) and understand what makes a core investment portfolio. Then in Podcast session 10 we looked at Asset classes, or things you can investing, and a little bit about how they interact. And we followed this up with Podcast session 11, where we covered the platforms, wrappers and funds that these assets are held inside. this is the basic architecture for investing success. Step 3 - Understand Risk It has been proven beyond doubt that risk and reward are related. Risk is a multi-layered subject, as I discussed with my friend Richard Allum in Podcast session 16. Much later, I chatted to Paul Resnik of risk measurement firm Finametrica in Podcast session 119, and looked into the science of risk tolerance, and whether or not it changes in response to external factors. Finally, video number 300 covers the three main ways in which investment risk can be managed by ordinary folks, such as you and me. Step 4 - Educate yourself We're better at most things if we learn something about them in advance of diving in. The same is true for investing, which is why this site exists, and why you're here. You need to learn how to invest, before you start to invest. Podcast session 76 was a chat with journalist Robin Powell who created a documentary called How To Win The Loser's Game. Listen to the show and watch the film; it'll set the scene. Then I embarked on a four-part investment masterclass covering: Asset Allocation Risk and return Setting realistic targets Understanding costs Those four podcast sessions will give you a superb grounding of education and equip you to make good choices. Step 5 - Get practical Armed with all that good information, it is time to get your hands dirty with some practical investing. Back in Podcast session 41, I took listeners through how to build a portfolio from scratch, exactly how I would do it. I then chatted subsequently with Mark Polson of platform consultancy the lang cat, in Podcast session 75. If you're going to go it alone and not seek professional advice, there are plenty of online systems to help you invest in various ways, and Mark's guide helps you decide which is best for you. Once a portfolio is built, it should be reviewed. In Podcast session 96 I cover what to do when you sit down each year to look at the year just gone and the one coming up. What should you be looking for? What should you ignore? Step 6 - Learn about behavioural finance We are so often our own worst enemies. While investing is a science, as humans we are driven by emotion, and as such we can make some very bad decisions. Half the battle with learning how to invest is understanding why we make mistakes and putting in place a framework to minimise these. Back in Podcast session 43 I covered nine classic investing mistakes that I see people make over and over again. Then, in one of my favourite conversations I have had for the podcast, I chatted to Greg Davies from Barclays Wealth over two shows, session 108 and session 109. Greg is the UK's foremost authority on behavioural finance and gives us some very practical tips on how to make good investing decisions. Finally, I make my own attempt to give some practical tips for making smart decisions in Podcast session 118. Step 7 - Get things in context As I often say here on MeaningfulMoney, money is never an end in itself, but a means to an end. It is there to serve your life goals, and to enable them, never to be a goal in itself. It is therefore vital to invest with this context in mind. In Podcast session 48 I asked some important questions, crafted by the father of financial life planning George Kinder. These three questions will help put money in its proper place. I then interviewed my good friend Tina Weeks in Podcast session 85, and she shared her approach for putting money into perspective. Step 8 - Take things to the next level Finally, for those plucky few who make it this far, there is the opportunity to level up, and take your investing to the next level. In Podcast session 81, I cover some advanced investing techniques, and in Podcast session 24, I talked about some lessons we can learn from how the super-rich manage their wealth. I chatted to financial guru Todd Tresidder in Podcast session 123, and asked the question: How much do I need to retire. Todd himself retired at 35 or something incredible, so he's a good man to learn from. And then in Podcast session 113, I covered ways to put your finances on autopilot, so you can grow your wealth while you sleep. Summary Phew! I think that is plenty for most people to be going along with. If you can apply the information about how to invest contained in these podcasts and videos, your financial success is pretty much assured. Join the conversation I love to read and respond to your comments, so please do join in and share. Question: Which of these resources has benefitted you most, and why? Share the love If this show is of any use to you, it would help me massively if you would take the time to leave me a review on iTunes.
