We are very proud of the number of guests that we have had on the show over the years. A big name in the sport of obstacle course racing that we hadn't gotten around to yet was Garfield Griffiths though! With the news of him no longer being a race director over at Spartan Race, effectively ending his 12 year old career of race directing for brands such as Battlefrog, Savage Race, OCRWC, and Spartan itself, we figured that it would be a good time to reach out and have him on! We talk about the changes that he has seen in the sport over the years, lessons learned in race directing, favorite race venues, his love for cigars and bacon, and how his position in the company has changed. We also discuss fun facts like him being the creator of Savage Race's "Wheel World" obstacle and what he wanted to call it, his history of spinning recorrds at the first ever Ultra EDM show, and how he started a Facebook group for dad jokes that now has 45 thousand members. 0:00 – 3:27 – Intro 3:27 – 4:58 – Quick News 4:58 – 5:37 – Content Preface 5:37 - 1:00:30 - Garfield Griffiths Interview 1:00:30 - End – Outro Next episode will hopefully be an athlete who we have had an eye on for months! ____ News Stories: Beer Mile Film Kickstarter Epic Volleyball Secret Link Easy Pushups Secret Link Funny Funeral Secret Link Honda Accord Secret Link Rainbow Waterfall Secret Link ____ Related Episodes: I Am A Spartan Podcast's Episode 154 with Garfield Griffiths!! With the second ever Savage Race Point Series having its start right around the corner we wanted to have a member of the event team to build up some anticipation for it! Luckily Lee Stowell was the man for the job! BattleFrog launched in May of 2014 and held 6 races which were universally applauded. In 2015, they produced 15 events and a television show on ESPN. In August of that year, they announced a massive jump to 44 races nationwide. A few months later was the infamous Fiest Bowl sponsorship, and 25 races into 2016, they were out of business. You see, I believe that it is through difficult situations and great pain that the human spirit grows and character is developed. And my story is a testament to this.I started in the fitness industry when I was only 18 years old, and I knew that it was where I belonged. I had always been into fitness and enjoyed being active throughout my whole childhood. I was involved in Martial Arts, Wrestling and Football throughout high school and was generally a very physical person.I have been in the field for 26+ years and plan to stay here for many more. While I always enjoyed my work and was successful with it, I was not as passionate then as I am now. The passion didn't come until much later. The passion came through the most painful loss I have ever experienced…the death of my mother. It was my mother's life: her sacrifices, support and guidance that made me the man I am today. It was her death that birthed a passion in me. After I lost my mother, I had a renewed sense of purpose; I vowed that I would make her proud. It was during this painful season that I realized that I was put here to help others, to guide others to be their best selves, and to continue striving to be my best too.My parents were always an anchor for me. They raised my siblings and I to be the best we could be, instilling a deep faith and the principles of Respect, Love and Discipline; principles that I apply to everything I do even to this day. After my mother's death, my father became a beacon for me. He demonstrated a great strength even through great tragedy. He inspires me to push through the pain and grow stronger through difficult situations.Since then, I redefined my purpose. I became more passionate about helping others to reach their goals, but even more I longed to help them evolve into their best selves. I work with clients to help them move forward towards their future instead of dwelling on the past. One of my favorite analogies of this evolution is when a caterpillar becomes a butterfly. After the butterfly emerges from the cocoon, he never goes back to being a caterpillar. Once you start living as your true self and growing into your best self, you don't go back to who you used to be.Since this awakening, my path has led me towards many great career opportunities. I have worked as a Spartan SGX trainer and had the incredible honor of giving motivational speeches at Spartan and Battlefrog events along with at the OCR World Championships. I have spoken to groups of first responders and to youth at schools. When I speak, I do not write a script, I speak from the heart and in the moment. My hope with each motivational speech is that I connect to the hearts of the audience, that they will be able to feel my energy and passion and that it will ignite something inside of them too! I view every speaking opportunity as an honor and an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others. As far as training goes, I have developed my own unique style that represents who I am as a fitness coach. I have built the foundation for my training on my years of experience with various approaches. My training sessions are all about functional movement, but I am constantly changing things up to keep my clients interested and challenged. This style is not for everyone, but those who want to be pushed and who want to become mentally tough as well as physically strong love my combination of movements and motivation.Ultimately it has been the painful situations in my life that have grown me the most. It is because of my loss and my struggles that I have become who I am today.Who am I?I am confident.I am humble.I am hungry.I am eager.I am ambitious.I am hard-working.I am willing to do what it takes.I am Coach Pain.MY EXPERIENCEI have over 26 years of experience in the fitness industry and as a motivational speaker. Some of my professional accomplishments include: Motivational Speaker Fitness Coach Nutrition Specialist NPC 2011 Midwest Ironman Physique American Ninja Warrior Participant – 2011, 2012 Jeet Kune Do & Wrestling Background (12 years) Naval Special Warface Orientation Course Instructor Announcer and Motivational Speaker For Spartan Race and BattleFrong Series

BattleFrog is remembered for both good and bad by those who ran it when it was around! With the next incarnation of the event planning to resurface and the initial comeback weekend being this weekend, Mike figured that he would have his good friend CJ on the show to talk about running the event back in 2015! This is a simple episode reminiscing about the old days in OCR and doing commentary on our GoPro event video that Mike made years ago! We do not go into specifics of the past and future of the event as it wasn't really the goal of this episode. Here are some articles for additional information about the initial launch of Battlefrog, the BattleFrog Fiesta Bowl, and the cancelling of all future events. BattleFrog X continues to try to continue with their relaunch when Will Hicks interviewed them earlier this year but we aren't optimistic at this time due to Garfield Griffiths returning to be exclusively a Spartan Race director, and the overall lack of communication from BattleFrog X lately. Join Travis Sims (The AGC Experience Host) as he takes the rare opportunity of his own podcast to share the importance of practicing Thankfulness & Gratitude. In honor of Thanksgiving this week I'm sharing a sneak peek into a topic I covered with my Travis Sims Mastermind Coaching Group. It sometimes feels hard to be thankful or grateful when so many things are going wrong. Especially this year with Covid-19 and so many families are separated at Thanksgiving. Start with the small things. Be grateful for waking up, be thankful for the bed you sleep in, the person beside you, the roof over your head. In this podcast you will discover how to have that attitude of gratitude and great ways to practice it daily. ~ Travis Sims is a Networking Expert, Motivational Speaker, and Thought Leader committed to helping you become a better person, leader, and networker. Join Travis Sims (The AGC Experience Host) as he takes the rare opportunity of his own podcast to share the importance of diversifying your network with diversity inclusion. Many times people tell me they're networking. When I dig a little deeper, I find out they are meeting with the same 20 people every week. People that look like them, people that think like them, and they think they're networking. When I ask how many women business owners are in their network, how many African American business owners, how many Latino business owners, how many business owners in different generations, how many state wide, national, and international people they're networking with they soon realize they have only begun to network. ~ Travis Sims is a Networking Expert, Motivational Speaker, and Thought Leader committed to helping you become a better person, leader, and networker. Join Travis Sims (The AGC Experience Host) as he takes the rare opportunity of his own podcast to share the importance of neutral politics in business. Tomorrow Tuesday November 3rd 2020 is Election Day in the United States. Tension is high and people are very vocal about their chosen candidate. We've all heard the terminology “Stay Politically Correct.” This is still true in this moment. When you vocally choose a side, it cuts off 50% of your referrability. Staying one sided will could cause the other side to completely boycott you, your business and they can even be vocal to their friends as to why they will no longer do business with you. Now if your political views out way your need for income by all means go ahead. However, most businesses can't afford to make this costly mistake/ ~ Travis Sims is a Networking Expert, Motivational Speaker, and Thought Leader committed to helping you become a better person, leader, and networker. I spoke with elite OCR athlete Alexandra Walker this week all about her experience at TMX, Toughest South, and how she trains to keep up with the elite field. Alex tells me how she got started in OCR, how and when she started training competitively, and what it's like to have Yancy Culp as her personal coach. That leads us into a short discussion about the importance of coaching when it comes to training. She shares with me her experience at TMX in Sacramento and what it was like being in the "pain cave", and she talks about the transition between TMX and then Toughest just a few weeks later. I ask her to compare the competition between short races and endurance races, and to compare an ultra marathon to an endurance OCR. Alex tells me about what distance she considers her speciality and why, and shares some tips about how to prepare for wet obstacles. Lastly, she tells me what some of her favorite races are, and we naturally talk about the epic Battlefrog rigs.

In this episode I talk to Beni Gifford. We cover a ton of things from winning the Spartan:Ultimate Team Challenge, to being a Yancy Camp Athlete. Beni shares with us how he got into elite obstacle course racing. He clears up the misconception that BattleFrog is coming back with a TV show, and we discuss what really led that business to fail. We talk in great detail about Spartan:Ultimate Team Challenge, and some of the behind the scenes details that you may not have thought about when watching the show. He also put out publicly for the first time that he will be on this upcoming season of Broken Skull, and is applying to be on American Ninja Warrior. Make sure you are following everything we are doing by taking a look at our Instagram, Facebook and joining our mailing list!
Anyone who has participated in a BattleFrog event has had the opportunity to get a dose of Coach Pain's inspirational saber rattling words. Some will not soon forget how he moved them. It was by mere coincidence that our interview was scheduled on the day that BattleFrog announced that they are suspending all future events effective immediately; clearly, a shock to those who loved to compete in these events, more of a shock to those who were employed by the organization. All the same, Coach Pain and I held true to our words; we answered questions that people posed and were offered a seemingly final bit of inspiration from the man who touched so many in the sport of Obstacle Racing. Be sure to provide a positive review on Itunes!

Nearly all Obstacle Course Events include a heavy carry component and even those that don't require hill climbing ability. These training challenges are best approached outdoors and typically best conducted by mimicking the actual challenge. Where am I going with this you might ask? In this episode I have the pleasure of sharing some of my training tips with Crystal Seaver, Master Trainer for Wreck Bag, a product produced by Lindonfitness.com. If you participate in Spartan Races, Battlefrog events or even World's Toughest Mudder, you will benefit greatly by employing the workouts I share in this episode. If you don't own a Wreck Bag and having been trying to build a make-shift carry tool, you're being penny thrift and a pound foolish. If you've been thinking about a purchase, listen to this episode and take notes! I'll tell you how to develop explosive hill climbing/bag carry power. www.naturalrunningcoach.net
On today's show we talk with two of the top men at BattleFrog Series. Kevin Jones is an engineer by trade, but two months ago, he joined the ever growing list of OCR fans turned OCR employee. On his drive from Ohio to Miami, he stopped by the ORM offices to chat with Matt about it. Learn about his start in OCR, and the wild ride since that has led to him becoming the Chief Marketing Officer at BattleFrog. Next up is a call with BattleFrog CEO Ramiro Ortiz. (Kevin joined for this call as well). Matt first talked to Ramiro when Mr. Ortiz took over from Don Mann last year. Now seemed like to be a good time to catch up to see things have progressed, or not, at BattleFrog. They discuss attendance numbers, this year's ESPN shows, and new cities for next year. Because I see so much of this malady among the athletes I meed I decided to revisit this interview done with Dr Brian Abelson, author or a great book on understanding and the treatment of Plantar issues. In order to resolve this pesky injury you first need to understand the culprit that is responsible. If you are an Obstacle Racing athlete, planning to participate in a Spartan Race or BattleFrog and have been plagued with Plantar Fasciitis, you really need to hear this!
In this episode I talk to Ashley Samples, with a little cameo from Dustin Radney. We cover her upcoming first race at Conquer the Gauntlet, what happened at the most recent Battlefrog she ran that sparked an article on Obstacle Racing Media, and her races all over the world.
When I first heard that a 9 year old girl had completed a 24 hour BattleFrog obstacle race it was revealed to me in a blog post written by Ekaterina Solovieva, aka., “Solo”, herself a seasoned adventure/obstacle racer/psychologist. Her catchy title: “A 9-year old completed a 24-hour obstacle race and why I am not impressed”. I had to better understand why someone would “go there” and needed to dig into this topic simply because, well… it's just really interesting. Anyone one who is or has raised children must be curious. Is this a good or bad idea, should race promoters allow this to take place? Lots to think about and we tried to cover it from all angles. If you care to read the blog for yourself here is the link to “Solo's” Blog page: www.solovieva.com/not-impressed/
In this episode I talk to Garfield Griffiths, the man behind many of the great races you have already ran, and likely will run. In our 17th episode, JT annihilates a Battle Frog obstacle course race while Walter gets his boxing matched canceled. Then we tell you about our everyday carry items before we jump into School of the Boat where we discuss submarine weapons. Finally we wrap everything up with the news.
A proper diet can mean the difference between winning and losing races. If you have poor feeding habits, you risk sacrificing your health; you will struggle with your training and may not race at an optimal weight. Matt Fitzgerald is arguably one of the most studied authors on the topic of endurance related nutrition. He has traveled the world studying the eating habits of the top endurance athletes and what he shares on the subject of winning feeding strategies may surprise you. Have you turned into a Vegan? Are you on a carb restricted diet and hope to perform well in endurances events? Those who hope to perform their best in a marathon, Spartan Race, Battle Frog or World's Toughest Mudder would do well to heed the advice offered in this episode. Racing weight matters… are you sacrificing your strength to make weight or are you of the mind that muscle trumps slight of build? Tune in for some interesting views.
Battle Frog is quickly becoming the OCR Series of choice among discerning competitors in the world of Obstacle Racing. Christopher Acord is Battle Frog's chief architect/Race Director, fondly nicknamed “The Beard” for obvious reasons. We thought it was time to reach out to Christopher to gain some insight into the planning and development of “the other OCR events”. This interview was highly enlightening and for those who have never competed in a Battle Frog Event, this is clearly a show you don't want to miss! Tu sais à quelle position tu as terminé? ça m'a rendu heureuse. Même chose au Championnat l'an dernier. Jesse : Tu as le 17 mai à Atlanta, Battlefrog. Ryan : Ouais. Jesse : Seras tu à Toronto? Ryan : Je serai certainement à Toronto. Bernard : Oui, on t'y a vu l'an passé. Lindsay : Merci!
