Sengoku Daimyo's Chronicles of Japan

This episode we will discuss various embassies to and from Yamato during the reign of Takara Hime, with a particular focus on the embassy of 659, which occured at a particularly eventful time and happened to be extremely well-recorded fro the period by Iki no Hakatoko, who was apparently on the mission to the Tang court itself. For more, check out our blog post at: https://sengokudaimyo.com/podcast/episode-123 Rough Transcript Welcome to Sengoku Daimyo's Chronicles of Japan.  My name is Joshua, and this is episode 123: Embassy Interrupted.   Iki no Hakatoko sat in his room, gazing out at the city.   It was truly an amazing place, filled with all kinds of people from around the world.  And yet, still, after 9 months of confinement, the place felt small.  Sure, there he hadwere visits from ranking nobles and dignitaries, but even the most lenient of house arrests was still house arrest. But that didn't mean that he had nothing to do.  There were books and more that he had access to—many that had not yet made it to the archipelago, and some of which he no doubt hoped he could bring back with him.  And of course, there was paper, brush, and ink. And then there were the experiences he and others had acquired on this mission to the Great Tang.  From the very beginning the missionit washad been plagued with disaster when they lost half of their ships and company mission to rogue winds on the open seas.  Now they were trapped because the Emperor himself wouldn't let them return home.  They had experienced and seen so much, and that provided ample material for one to catalogue. As the seasons changed, and rumors arrived that perhaps his situation would also something would change soon, Iki no Hakatoko spread out the paper on the desk in front of him, dipped his brush in the ink, and began to write.  He wrote down notes about his experiences, and what had befallen him and the others.  He had no idea who It is unclear whom he thought might read it, and if he was intending this to be an official or personal record, but he wrote it down anyway. Hakatoko He couldn't have known then that his words would eventually be captured in a much larger work, chronicling the entire history of Yamato from its very creation, nor that his would be one of the oldest such personal accounts records to be handed down.  His Itwords  wwould only survive in fragments—or perhaps his writing was simply that terse—but his words they would be preserved, in a format that was still being read over a thousand years later.     Last episode we finished up the story of Xuanzang and his Journey to the West—which is to say the Western Regions -- , and thence on to India, or Tianzhu, where he walked in the footsteps of the historical Buddha, studied the scriptures at the feet of venerable teachers, such as Silabadhra at the Great Monastery of Nalanda, and eventually wound up bringingbrought back hundreds of manuscripts to Chang'an to , which he and others be translated and disseminated, impacting Buddhist thought across East Asia.  HisXuanzang's travels lasted from around 629 to 645, and he was still teaching in Chang'an in the 650s when various student-monks from Yamato  arrived to study and learn from him, eventually bringing back his teachings to the archipelago as part of the Faxiang, or Hossou, school of Buddhism. Before that we talked about the visitors from “Tukhara” and “Sha'e” recorded in the Chronicles.  As we noted, these peopley were morest likely from the Ryukyuan islands, and the names may have been conflated with distant lands overseas – but regardless, .  Whether or not it was a mistake, this it does seem to indicated that Yamato had at least an inkling of the wider world, introduced through the continental literature that they had been importing, if not the direct interactions with individuals from the Korean peninsula and the Tang court. This episode, we're going to talk about some of the relations between Yamato and the continent, including the various embassies sent back and forth, as well as one especially detailed embassy from Yamato to the Tang Court that found itself in a bit of a pickle.  After all, what did you do, back in those days, when you were and ambassador, and your country suddenly went to war?  We'll talk about that and what happened. To reorient ourselves in time, we're in the reign of Takara Hime, called aka Kyogoku Tennou during her first reign, who had reascended to the throne in 655, following the death of her brother, Prince Karu.  The Chroniclers would dub her Saimei Tennou in her second run on the throne. From the very beginning of her second reign, Takara Hime was entertaining foreign envoys.  In 654, the Three Han of the Korean Peninsula—Goguryeo, Baekje, and Silla—all sent ambassadors to express their condolence on the death of her brother, and presumably to witness her ascension.  And in the 8th month of her reign, Kawabe no Maro no Omi, along with others, returned from Chang'an.  He Kawabe no Maro no Omi had been the Chief Ambassador to the Tang on an embassy sent , traveling there in the 2nd month of the previous year.  Originally he had been He was under the command of the controlling envoy, Takamuku no Obito no Kuromaro, but Kuromaro who unfortunately died in Chang'an and so Kawabe no Mari no Omi took over his role. That same year, 655, we know that there were about 100 persons recorded in Yamato from Baekje, along with envoys of Goguryeo and Silla.  These are likely the same ones we mentioned back in episode 117 when 150 Baekje envoys were present at court along with multiple members of the Emishi. Silla, for their part, had sent to Yamato a special hostage , whom we know as something like “Mimu”, along with skilled workmen.  Unfortunately, we are told that Mimu fell ill and died.  The Chronicles are pretty sparse on what this meant, but I can't imagine it was great.  After all, the whole idea of sending a hostage to another nation was as a pledge of good behavior – the idea being that the hostage was the idea that they werewas valuable enough that the sending nation wouldn't do anything too rash.  The flip side of that is if the hostage died, Of course, if they perished, the hosting country lost any leverage—and presumably the sending nation would be none too pleased.  That said, people getting sick and passing away was hardly a hostile action, and likely just considered an unfortunate situation. The following year, in 656, we see that Goguryeo, Baekje, and Silla again all sent ambassadords were all sent to offer “tribute”.  The Chronicles mention that dark purple curtains were drawn around the palace site to entertain the ambassadors—likely referring to the new palace site at Asuka no Wokamoto, which probably was not yet fully built out, yet.   We are given the name of the Goguryeo ambassador, Talsa, and associate ambassador, Ilchi,  in the 8th month, Talsa and Ilichi, with 81 total members in the Goguryeo retinueof the embassy.  In seeming response, Yamato sent an embassy was sent to Goguryeo with the likes of Kashiwade no Omi no Hatsumi as the Chief Ambassador and Sakahibe no Muraji no Iwasuki as the Associate Ambassador.  Other names mentioned include We also see the likes of Inugami no Shiromaro, Kawachi no Fumi no Obito—no personal name is given—and Ohokura no Maro.  We also see thea note in the Chronicles that Yamato ambassadors to the quote-unquote “Western Sea”—which seems to refer to the Tang court, but could possibly refer to anything from the Korean Peninsula west—returned in that same year.  The two are named as Saheki no Muraji no Takunaha and Oyamashita no Naniha no Kishi no Kunikatsu.  These are both families that were clearly involved in cross-strait relations , based on how they are frequently referenced in the Chronicles as being associated with various overseas missions.  but  However, we don't seem to have clear evidence of them when these particular individualsy leavingft on this mission.  “Kunikatsu” mightay refer to an earlier ambassador to Baekje, but the names are different, so that is largely just speculation.  In any case, Uupon their return, they are said to have brought with them a parrot.  This wasn't the first parrot the court had seen—that feathery traveler had arrived in 647, or at least that is the first parrotinstance  we have in the written record -- .  Aand that one came from Silla as part of that embassy's gifts. Continuing on, in 657, The following year there was another group of ambassadors returned coming  from the “Western Seas”, in this case coming back from—or through—Baekje.  Thisese wasere Adzumi no Muraji no Tsuratari and Tsu no Omi no Kutsuma.  The presents they brought back were, of all things:  one camel and two donkeys.  And can you imagine bringing a camel back across the sea at this point?  Even if they were using the larger ships based on continental designs, it still must have been something else to put up with a camel and donkeys onboard, animals that are not exactly known for their easy-going and compliant nature. Speaking of boats, we should probably touch on what we *think* they were usinghas been going on here.  I say *think* because we only get glimpses  of the various boats being used in the archipelago, whether from mentions in or around Yamato, archaeology, or artistic depictions, many of which came from later periods., and wSo while it is generally assumed that they the Yamato were using Tang style vessels by the 8th and 9th century, there does not appear to be clear evidence of exactly what kind of boats were being used during the early earlier periods of contact. A quick note on boat technology and navigation: while travel between the Japanese archipelago and the Korean Peninsula, and up the Yellow Sea, wasn't safe, it would have been possible with the vessels of the time.  Japan sits on the continental shelf, meaning that to the east where the shelf gives way to the Pacific Ocean with the Phillippine Sea to the south, the waters are much, much deeper than they are to the west.  In deep waters, waves are not necessarily affected by the ocean floor, meaning they can build up much more energy and require different kinds of technology to sail.  In shallower areas, such as the Sea of Japan, the Yellow Sea, the East China Sea or the Korean Straits to the west of the archipelago, there's more drag that dampens out the wave effect – it's not that these areas are uniformly shallow and calm, but they are calmer and easier to navigate in general.  Our oldest example of boats in the archipelago of any kind are dugout canoes, .  These are logs that are hollowed out  and shaped. , and tThese appear to be what Jomon era populations used to cross to the archipelago and travel between the various islands.  Though they may be considered primitive, without many of the later innovations that would increase stability and seaworthiness—something I'll touch on more a bit later—, they were clearly effective enough to populate the islands of the Ryukyuan chain and even get people and livestock, in the form of pigs, down to the Hachijo islands south of modern Tokyo.    So they weren't ineffective. Deep waters mean that the waves are not necessarily affected by the ocean floor.  Once it hits shallower water, there is more drag that affects larger waves.  This means that there can be more energy in these ocean waves.  That usually means that shallower areas tend to be more calm and easier to navigate—though there are other things that can affect that as well. We probably should note, however, that Japan sits on the edge of the continental shelf.  To the west, the seas are deep, but not nearly as deep as they are to the east, where continental shelf gives way to the Pacific ocean, with the Philippine Sea to the south.  These are much deeper waters than those of the Yellow Sea, the East China Sea, or the Korean Straits.  The Sea of Japan does have some depth to it, but even then it doesn't compare in both size and depth. All this to say that travel between the Japanese archipelago and the Korean Peninsula, and up the Yellow Sea, were all things that were likely much easier to navigate with the vessels available at the time, but that doesn't mean that it was safe. Later, we see a different type of vessel appear: .  This is a built vessel, made of multiple hewn pieces of wood.  The examples that we see show a rather square front and back that rise up, sometimes dramatically, .  There are with various protrusions on either side. We see examples of this shape , and we've seen examples in haniwa from about the 6th century, and we have some corresponding wooden pieces found around the Korean peninsula that pretty closely match the haniwa boat shapesuggest similar boats were in use there as well, .  Nnot surprising given the cultural connections.  These boats do not show examples of sails, and were likely crewed by rowers.  Descriptions of some suggest that they might be adorned with branches, jewels, mirrors, and other such things for formal occasions to identify some boats as special -- , and we even have one record of the rowers in ceremonial garb with deer antlers.  But none of this suggests more than one basic boat typevery different types of boats. In the areas of the Yellow and Yangzi rivers, area of modern China, particularly in the modern PRC, the boats we see are a little different.  They tend to be flat bottomed boats, possible evolved from  which appear to have been designed from rafts or similar .   These vessels would have evolved out of those used to transport goods and people up and down the Yellow and Yangzi rivers and their tributaries.  These boats y had developed sails, but still the boats wwere n'ot necessarily the most stable on the open ocean.  Larger boats could perhaps make their way through some of the waves, and were no doubt used throughout the Yellow Sea and similar regions.  However, for going farther abroad, we are told thatcourt chronicles note that there were other boats that were preferred: . These are sometimes called  the Kun'lun-po, or Boats of the Kunlun, or the Boats of the Dark-skinned people.  A quick dive here into how this name came to be. Originally, “Kunlun” appears to refer to a mythical mountain range, the Kunlun-shan, which may have originated in the Shan-hai-jing, the Classic of Mountains and Seas, and so may not have referred to anything specific terrestrial mountain range, ally.  Italthough the term would later attach be used to describe to the mountain chain that forms the northern edge of the Tibetan plateau, on the southern edge of the Tarim Basin. However, at some point, it seems that “Kunlun” came to refer to people -- .  Sspecifically, it came to refer to people of dark complexion, with curly hair.  There are Tang era depictions of such people, but their origin is not exactly known: it might .  It is thought that it may have have equally referred to dark-skinned individuals of African descent, or possibly referring to some of the dark-skinned people who lived in the southern seas—people like the Andamanese living on the islands west of modern Thailand or some of the people of the Malay peninsula, for example. It is these latter groups that likely were the origin, then, of the “Kun'lun-po”, referring to the ships of the south, such as those of Malay and AsutronesianAustronesian origin.  We know that from the period of at least the Northern and Southern Dynasties, and even into the early Tang, these foreign ships often , which were often plyingied the waters from trade port to trade port, and were the preferred sailing vessels for voyages to the south, where the waters could be more treacherous.  Indeed, the Malay language eventually gives us the term of their vessels as “Djong”, a term that eventually made its way into Portuguese as “Junco” and thus into English as “junk”, though this terms has since been rather broadly applied to different “Asian” style sailing vessels. So that leaves us with three ship types that the Yamato court could have been using to send these embassies back and forth to the continent: .  Were they still using their own style of native boat as seen on haniwa,, or were they adopting continental boats to their needs?   If so, were they using the flat-bottomed boats of the Tang dynasty, or the more seaworthy vessels of the foreign merchants?. Which were they using?  The general thinking is that IMost depictions I have seen of the kentoushi, the Japanese embassies to the Tang court, depict them as t is generally thought that they were probably using the more continental-style flat-bottomed, riverine vessels.  After all, they were copying so much of what the Sui and Tang courts were doing, why would they not consider these ships to likewise be superior to their own?  At least for diplomatic purposes.  I suspect that local fishermen did their own were keeping their own counsel as far as ships are concernedthing, and I also have to wonder about what got used they were using from a military standpoint for military purposes.  Certainly we see the Tang style boats used in later centuries, suggesting that these had been adopted at some earlier point, possibly by the 650s or earlier. Whatever they used, and while long-distance sailing vessels could Sailing vessels could be larger than short-distance riverine craft, this was not a luxury cruise.  , but conditions on board were not necessarily a luxury cruise.  From later accounts we know that they would really pack people into these shipspeople could be packed in.  It should be noted that individual beds and bedrooms were a luxury in much of the world, and many people probably had little more than a mat to sleep on.  Furthermore, people could be packed in tight.   Think of the size of some of these embassies, which are said to be 80 to 150 people in size.  A long, overseas journey likely meant getting quite cozy with your neighbors on the voyage.  So how much more so with a camel and two donkeys on board a vessel that was likely never meant to carry them?  Not exactly the most pleasant experience, I imagine – and this is not really any different than European sailing vessels during the later age of exploration.. So, from the records for just the first few years of Takara-hime's second reign, we see that there are lots of people going back and forth, and we have a sense of how they might be getting to and from the continent and peninsula.  Let's dive into Next, we are going to talk about one of the most heavily documented embassies to the Tang court, which set out in the 7th month of the year 659.  Not only do we get a pretty detailed account of this embassy, but we even know who wrote the account: as in our imagined intro, , as this is one of the accounts by the famous Iki no Muraji no Hakatoko, transcribed by Aston as “Yuki” no Muraji. Iki no Hakatoko's name first appears in an entry for 654, where he is quoted as giving information about the status of some of the previous embassies to the Tang court.  Thereafter, various entries are labeled as “Iki no Muraji no Hakatoko says:”, which   This would seem to indicate that these particular entries came are taken directly from another work written by Iki no Hakatoko and referred to as the “Iki Hakatoko Sho”.  Based on the quoted fragments found in the Nihon Shoki, itthis appears to be one of ourthis oldest Japanese travelogues.  It , and spends considerable time on the mission of 659, of which it would appear that Iki no Hakatoko was himself a member, though not a ranking one.  Later, Iki no Hakatoko would find himself mentioned in the Nihon Shoki directly, and he would even be an ambassador, himself. The embassy of 659 itself, as we shall see, was rather momentous.  Although it started easily enough, the embassy would be caught up in some of the most impactful events that would take place between the Tang, Yamato, and the states of the Korean peninsula. This embassy was formally under the command of Sakahibe no Muraji no Iwashiki and Tsumori no Muraji no Kiza.  It's possible In the first instance it is not clear to me if this isthat he is the same person as the previously mentioned associate envoy, Sakahibe no Iwasuki—but the kanji are different enough, and there is another Sakahibe no Kusuri who shows up between the two in the record.  However, they are both listed as envoys during the reign of Takara Hime, aka Saimei Tennou, and as we've abundantly seen, and it wouldn't be the first time that scribal error crept in. has taken place, especially if the Chroniclers were pulling from different sources. The ambassadors took a retinue with them, including members of the northern Emishi, whom they were bringing along with them to show to the Tang court.  TheThey also  embassy ttook two ships—perhaps because of the size of the retinue, but I suspect that this was also because if anything happened to the one, you still had the other.  A kind of backup plan due to the likelihood something went wrong.  And wouldn't you know it, something did go wrong.  You see, things started out fine, departing Mitsu Bay, in Naniwa, on the 3rd day of the 7th month.  They sailed through the Seto Inland Sea and stopped at Tsukushi, likely for one last resupply and to check in with the Dazai, located near modern Fukuoka, who would have been in charge of overseeing ships coming and going to the archipelago.  They departed from Ohotsu bay in Tsukushi on the 11th day of the 8th month. A quick note: Sspeedboats these were not.  Today, one can cross from Fukuoka to Busan, on the southeast corner of the Korean peninsula, in less than a day.  The envoys, however, were taking their time.  They may have even stopped at the islands of Iki and Tsushima on their way.  By the 13th day of the 9th month—over a month from leaving Kyushu behind -- , the  ships finally came to an island along the southern border of Yamato's ally, Baekje.  Hakatoko does not recall the name of the island, but o On the following morning, around 4 AM, so just before sunrise, the two ships put out to sea together to cross the ocean, heading south, towards the mouth of the Yangzi river.  Unfortunately, the following day, the ship Iwashiki was on met with a contrary wind, and was driven away from the other ship – with nothing known of its fate until some time afterwards.  Meanwhile, the other ship, under the command of Tsumori no Muraji no Kiza, continued on and by midnight on the 16th day, it arrived at Mt. Xuan near Kuaiji Commandary in the Yue district, in modern Zhejiang.  Suddenly a violent northeast wind blew up, and p.  Tthey were saileding another 7 days before they finally arrived at Yuyao.  Today, this is part of the city of Ningbo, at the mouth of the Qiantang river, south of Shanghai and considered a part of the Yangzi Delta Region.  This area has been inhabited since at least 6300 years ago, and it has long been a trade port, especially with the creation of the Grand Canal connecting between the Yangzi and the Yellow River, which would have allowed transshipment of goods to both regions. The now half-size Yamato contingenty  left their ship at Yuyao and disembarked, and made their way to Yuezhou, the capital of the Kuaiji Commandary.  This took them a bit of time—a little over a month.  Presumably this was because of paperwork and logistics: they probably because they had to send word ahead, and I suspect they had to inventory everything they brought and negotiate carts and transportationfigure out transportation., since   Tthey didn't exactly have bags of holding to stuff it all in, so they probably needed to negotiate carts and transportation.  The finally made it to Yuezhou on the first day of the 11th intercalary month.  An “intercalary” month refers to an extra month in a year.  It was determined by various calculations and was added to keep the lunar and solar years in relative synch. From Yuezhou, things went a bit more quickly, as they were placed on post-horses up to the Eastern Capital, or Luoyang, where the Emperor Tang Gaozong was in residence.   The Tang kept a capital at Luoyang and another to the west, in Chang'an.  The trip to Luoyang was long—over 1,000 kilometers, or 1 megameter, as it were.  The trip first took them through the Southern Capital, meaning the area of modern Nanjing, which they entered on the 15th day of the month.  They then continued onwards, reaching Luoyang on the 29th day of the 11th month.  The following day, on the 30th day of the 11th intercalary month of the year 659, the Yamato envoys were granted an audience with Emperor Tang Gaozong.  As was proper, he inquired about the health of their sovereign, Takara Hime, and the envoys reported that she was doing well.  He asked other questions about how the officials were doing and whether there was peace in Yamato.  The envoys all responded affirmatively, assuring him that Yamato was at peace. Tang Gaozong also asked about the Emishi they had brought with them.  We mentioned this event previously, back in Episode XXX117 , how the Emishi had been shown to the Tang Emperor, and how they had described them for him.  This is actually one of the earliest accounts that we have describing the Emishi from the Yamato point of view, rather than just naming them—presumably because everyone in Yamato already knew who they were.  From a diplomatic perspective, of course, this was no doubt Yamato demonstrating how they were, in many ways, an Empire, similar to the Tang, with their own subordinate ethnicities and “barbarians”. After answering all of the emperor's questions, the audience was concluded.  The following day, however, was something of its own. This was the first day of the regular 11th lunar month, and it also was the celebration of the Winter Solstice—so though it was the 11th month, it may have been about 22 December according to our modern western calendars.  The envoys once again met with the emperor, and they were treated as distinguished guests—at least according to their own records of it.  Unfortunately, during the festivities, it seems that a fire broke out, creating some confusion, and .  Tthe matters of the diplomatic mission were put on hold while all of that went on. We don't know exactly what happened in the ensuing month.  Presumably the envoys took in the sites of the city, may have visited various monasteries, and likely got to know the movers and shakers in the court, who likely would have wined and dined them, inviting them to various gatherings, as since they brought their own exotic culture and experiences to the Tang court. Unfortunately, things apparently turned sour.  First off, it seems clear that the members of this embassyy weren't the only Japanese in the court.  There may have been various merchants, of course, but and we definitely know that there were students who had come on other missions and were still there likely still studying, such as those who had been learning from studying with Master Xuanzang, whose journeys we mentioned in the last several episodes.  But Wwe are given a very specific name of a troublemaker, however:  Kawachi no Aya no Ohomaro, and we are told that he was aa servant of Han Chihung, who .  Han Chihung, himself, is thought to have possiblymay have been of mixed ethnicity—both Japanese and ethnic Han, and may .  Hhe may have traveled to the Tang court on or around 653. , based on some of the records, but it isn't entirely clear. For whatever reason, on the 3rd day of the 12th month of the year 659, Kawachi no Aya no Ohomaro slandered the envoys, and although .  Wwe don't know exactly what he said, but the Tang court caught wind of the accusations and found the envoys guilty.  They were condemned to banishment, until the author of our tale, none other than Iki no Hakatoko himself, stepped up, .  He made representation to the Emperor, pleading against the slander.  , and tThe punishment was remitted, .  Sso they were no longer banished.  However, they were also then told that they could no't return home.  You see, the Tang court was in the middle of some sensitive military operations in the lands east of the sea—in other words they were working with Silla to and invadeing the Kingdom of Baekje.  Since Yamato was an ally of Baekje, it would be inconvenient if the envoys were to return home and rally Yamato to Baekje's defense. And so the entire Yamato embassy was moved to the Western Capital, Chang'an, where they were placed under individual house arrest.  They no doubt were treated well, but they were not allowed to leave, and .  Tthey ended up spending the next year in this state. of house arrest. Unfortunately, we don't have a record of just how they passed their time in Chang'an.  They likely studied, and were probably visited by nobles and others.  They weren't allowed to leave, but they weren't exactly thrown in jail, either.  After all, they were foreign emissaries, and though the Tang might be at war with their ally, there was no formal declaration of war with Yamato, as far as I can make out.  And so the embassy just sat there, for about 9 months. Finally, in the 7th month of 660, the records tell us we are told thatthat tThe Tang and Silla forces had been successful: .  Baekje was destroyed..  The Tang and Silla forces had been successful.   News must have reached Chang'an a month later, as Iki Hakatoko writes that this occurred in the 8th month of the year 660.  With the Tang special military operation on the Korean peninsula concluded, they released the envoys and allowed them to return to their own countries.  They envoys began their preparations as of the 12th day of the 9th month, no doubt eager to return home, and left were leaving Chang'an a week later, on the 19th day of the 9th month.  From there, it took them almost a month to reach Luoyang, arriving on the 16th day of the 10th month, and here they were greeted with more good news, for here it was that they met up once again with those members of their delegation who had been blown off course. As you may remember, the ship carrying Iwashiki was blown off-course on the 15th day of the 9th month in the year 659, shortly after setting out from the Korean peninsula.  The two ships had lost contact and Tsumori no Muraji no Kiza and his ship had been the one that had continued on.   Iwashiki and those with him, however, found themselves at the mercy of the contrary winds and eventually came ashore at an island in the Southern Sea, which Aston translates as “Erh-kia-wei”.   There appears to be at least some suggestion that this was an island in the Ryukyuan chain, possibly the island of Kikai.  There, local islanders, none too happy about these foreigners crashing into their beach, destroyed the ship, and presumably attacked the embassy.  Several members, including Yamato no Aya no Wosa no Atahe no Arima (yeah, that *is* a mouthful), Sakahibe no Muraji no Inadzumi (perhaps a relative of Iwashiki) and others all stole a local ship and made their way off the island.  They eventually made landfall at a Kuazhou, southeast of Lishui City in modern Zhejiang province, where they met with local officials of the Tang government, who then sent them under escort to the capital at Luoyang.  Once there, they were probably held in a similar state of house arrest, due to the invasion of Baekje, but they met back up with Kiza and Hakatoko's party. The envoys, now reunited, hung out in Luoyang for a bit longer, and thus .  Thus it was on the first day of the 11th month of 660 that they witnessed war captives being brought to the capital.  This included 13 royal persons of Baekje, from the King on down to the Crown Prince and various nobles, including the PRimiePrime Minister, as well as 37 other persons of lower rank—50 people all told.  TheThese captives y were delivered up to the Tang government and led before the emperor.  Of course, with the war concluded, and Baekje no longer a functioning state, while he could have had them executed, Tang Gaozong instead released them, demonstrating a certain amount of magnanimity.  The Yamato envoys remained in Luoyang for most of the month.  On the 19th, they had another audience with the emperor, who bestowed on them various gifts and presents, and then five days later they departed the Luoyang, and began the trek back to the archipelago in earnest. By the 25th day of the first month of 661, the envoys arrived back at Yuezhou, head of the Kuaiji Commandery.  They stayed there for another couple of months, possibly waiting for the right time, as crossing the sea at in the wrong season could be disastrous.  They finally departed east from Yuezhou on the first day of the fourth month, coming to .  They came to Mt. Cheng-an 6 days later, on the 7th, and set out to sea first thing in the morning on the 8th.  They had a southwest wind initially in their favor, but they lost their way in the open ocean, an all too commonall-too-common problem without modern navigational aids.  Fortunately, the favorable winds had carried them far enough that only a day later they made landfall on the island of Tamna, aka Jeju island. Jeju island was, at this point, its own independent kingdom, situated off the southern coast of the Korean peninsula.  Dr. Alexander Vovin suggested that the name “Tamna” may have been a corruption of a Japonic or proto-Japonic name: Tanimura.  The island was apparently quite strange to the Yamato embassy, and they met with various residents natives of Jeju island.  They, even convincinged Prince Aphaki and eight other men of the island to come with them to be presented at the Yamato court. The rest of their journey took a little over a month.  They finally arrived back in Yamato on the 23rd day of the fifth month of 661.  They had been gone for approximately two years, and a lot had changed, especially with the destruction of Baekje.  The Yamato court had already learned of what had happened and was in the process of drawing up plans for an expedition back to the Korean peninsula to restore the Baekje kingdom, and pPrince Naka no Oe himself was set to lead the troops. The icing on the cake was: Tthe reception that the envoys received upon their return was rather cold.  Apparently they were had been slandered to the Yamato court by another follower of Han Chihung—Yamato no Aya no Atahe no Tarushima—and so they weren't met with any fanfare.  We still don't know what it was that Tarsuhima was saying—possibly he had gotten letters from Chihung or Ohomaro and was simply repeating what they had said. Either way, the envoys were sick of it.  They had traveled all the way to the Tang capitals, they had been placed under house arrest for a year, and now they had returned.  They not only had gifts from the Tang emperor, but they were also bringing the first ever embassy from the Kingdom of Tamna along with them.  The slander would not stand.  And so they did what anyone would do at the time:  They apparently appealed to the Kami.  We are told that their anger reached to the Gods of the High Heaven, which is to say the kami of Takamanohara, who killed Tarushima with a thunderbolt.  Which I guess was one way to shut him up. From what we can tell, the embassy was eventually considered a success.  Iki no Hakatoko's star would rise—and fall—and rise again in the court circles.  As I noted, his account of this embassy is really one of the best and most in depth that we have from this time.  It lets us see the relative route that the envoys were taking—the Chronicles in particular note that they traveled to the Great Tang of Wu, and, sure enough, they had set out along the southern route to the old Wu capital, rather than trying to cross the Bohai Sea and make landfall by the Shandong peninsula or at the mouth of the Yellow River.  From there they traveled through Nanjing—the southern “capital” likely referring, in this instance, to the old Wu capital—and then to Luoyang.  Though they stayed there much longer than they had anticipated, they ended up living there through some of the most impactful events that occurred during this point in Northeast Asia.  they And that is something we will touch on next episode.  Until then, thank you once again for listening and for all of your support. "And we know that for those who love God, all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose." Romans 8:28 Heavenly Father, I come before you today seeking a winning mindset. Just as you granted Joshua the strength to conquer Jericho, I humbly ask for your divine intervention in my life. Fill my heart with determination and unwavering faith that I may face any obstacle or challenge that comes my way. Lord, your word in Philippians 4:13 reminds me that I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. So, I pray that you empower me to rise above every limitation and doubt. Help me believe in myself and trust in your mighty power working within me. As I reflect on the story of David facing the giant Goliath, it serves as a reminder that no battle is too great when we place our faith in You. Grant me courage like David possessed, enabling me to confront my own giants fearlessly. Embolden me to stand firm in the face of adversity, knowing that victory is assured through you. Deuteronomy 11:24 says, "Every place where the sole of your foot treads will be yours. Your territory will extend from the wilderness to Lebanon and from the Euphrates River to the Western Sea." In 1 John 5:4-5, it is written that everyone born of God overcomes the world. Strengthen my spirit so that I may overcome every trial and tribulation that seeks to discourage or hinder me. Let nothing sway my resolve or diminish my hope because you are with me always. Father God, just as an athlete runs to obtain a prize, give me endurance and perseverance to run this race called life with resilience and determination (1 Corinthians 9:24). Grant me the mental strength to stay focused on the ultimate goal - to walk in alignment with your purpose for my life. I surrender myself entirely into your hands, Lord. Mold my mind according to your will and lead me towards excellence in all areas of life. May this prayer ignite a winning mindset within me - one that is rooted in unwavering faith in you and fortified by the knowledge of your indwelling spirit. In Jesus' name, Amen. 2 Corinthians 2:14 says, "But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere." Amen. Prayer for Today, 1. Lord Jesus, I am grateful for your guidance and support, knowing that you are always there to listen and answer my prayers. With your help, I have adopted a victory mindset, focusing on moving forward with confidence and determination. 2. You have shown me that challenges are not obstacles but opportunities for growth and learning. Instead of being discouraged by setbacks, I see them as stepping stones towards success. You have taught me to embrace the power of faith and to believe in myself even when faced with adversity. Amen. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/pastor-divineo/support

Chapter SixA BobbinNow, there was a Little, or a Bobbin if you prefer, of, well… how should we say this? A Bobbin of a peculiar nature. That's how some folks in the district would have put it in an aside, behind the hand, whisper if you knew ‘em well enough. Especially down in the lowlands areas of the Gentle Lands where things were much more proper like. But up in Dry Hills and all the way out to Lost Valley, perhaps not so much. Not so formal. Things were stranger up there and those who raised olives up among the dry canyons and hillsides had a tendency to keep to themselves as did the small quiet villages of workers who tended those twisting pastel trees of soft green and washed out white or grey, trees[NC1]  and made the oils which were exported even to the court of the Elf King of Indolién himself. They were serious about their work up there and tended to stick to their own business and shutter up quickly, sometimes even before dark. But it was pleasant enough up there, in a sort of hauntingly quiet way. Folk there referred to themselves properly as Bobbin and not the elvish phrasing of Littles.Nercë as it would be said in Indaarian. Or sometimes just, “the Ner.”Littles.As we were saying… there was one such Bobbin of a peculiar nature who lived up in Dry Hills and had inherited a modest estate of SalteBlock Olives from his rich uncle Guthbert MaCrow of the Wayside MaCrows before the big split in the family in which the respectables severed ways from… well, the peculiar branch. And it was on this night when the winds were wild and dark off the coast, that this particularly peculiar Bobbin who'd inherited his estate was on a late walkabout far from his orchards when he came upon the wounded stranger stumbling up the road with the bundle of the old ruck under his arm.And the hilt of a broken sword in the other.Tappert MaCrow saw the dark cloaked and hooded figure from afar off making his way along the winding Old Road up into the hills. Now… it must be said… most Bobbin[NC2] s would have seen such a sight on a windy spring night like this particular one well after midnight and approaching Last Snack, and thus promptly taken themselves off back home for a warm glass of milk and a dozen Oat Berry cookies to put themselves back to sleep and to forget all the nonsense of dark cloaked strangers stumbling about the lands in the middle of the night. That's what the average Bobbin would have done. No doubts about that. I can assure you of this. But as has been said, Tappert was not an average Little, or even Bobbin for that matter. He was in fact, quite peculiar for his kind. How peculiar, the reader of this tale might ask right about now.Let me explain.Tappert had been, from a very young age, his strange uncle's favorite young Bobbin, and thusly rewarded such by a sizeable and oft talked of inheritance. And Tappert, sometimes known as Tap Tap, or even Tapper among the small band of young friends he maintained, had the very un-Little trait, a nasty one at that, of being… curious. So of course, it wasn't any stretch for young Tappert to one day inherit the modest yet renown SalteBlock Farms of his weird uncle who'd been known to go off a'wanderin' at times and even once or twice for more than a year or so. All this happened not because Tappert was exceptionally good at the raising, pressing, and barreling of oils, but because, like his uncle, Tappert was peculiarly curious. We've used that word a lot. Curious. And to understand its context here we have to understand the Bobbins. An easy way to say what needs to be said next… is just to say it. So here it is. The Bobbins, Littles really, were a simple lot concerned with just their own daily business, and especially the business of other Bobbins, or the greater outside beyond their gentle lands. And very much not so much in the least[NC3]  concerned with the affairs of the world at large, though they would sit and listen to a little bit of gossip near the inn's hearth on any given night of the week. Or perhaps over a neighbor's fence if they were about some snack between chores. Perhaps even in the morning when the coffee was brewing, and it was just bacon. But by and large they tended to keep to themselves and be busy with the ordinary everyday business of their lives. Farm. Family. Flowers and gardens and such.To them, the Fall of Sirith Osildor ranked just a little bit lower than news of Goodie Tavish's prize peonies and the county faire of course this summer. That would be normal Little behavior. Nothing peculiar about that. And so, it was quite peculiar for Tappert McCrow to be out on such a night as this and going for a long walk as was his usual as the nights got less cold and the moon was out. He was, what the oldsters in the district would have said, young and restless at that age. And, according to them, all Little MaCrow needed was a nice Bobbin lass, round and happy, to a'settle him down a bit, ya hears me. That's all.And all this peculiarness could be forgiven by the locals if that were the grand extent of it. Late night walks deep into the less populated edges of the district. But such was not the case. For you see… Tappert McCrow, like his Grand old weird Uncle… [NC4] loved maps. Studying them. Making them. Finding them. Collecting them. Covering the walls of his old hill[NC5] , the one inherited from Uncle Guthbert, with them.Maps were Tappert's passion. His study, high in the old abbey tower around which a great oak had grown up alongside, atop the estate inside the hill below, the hill that was the center and life of SalteBlock Farms, was filled with maps. Desks, walls, chests, great drawers paid good money for in which to keep and lay them out. Maps old Guthbert had acquired in his many strange travels. Maps young Tappert had acquired in his long walks since. And not just maps. But also… bits and pieces of the past. Curiosities. Relics and artifacts from his walkabout tours every summer as close to the Barrow Valley, which some called the Lost Valley, as he dared. And where there were not maps and curiosities in his grand study, there were books. Many of them in fact. The collection of old dusty leatherbound collections of vellum and even papery papyrus lined the walls of his study and could be found often, open on every possible surface and space within the small tower while the latest acquisition was under months long inspection by Tappert. So this… is what made Tappert peculiar to the other Bobbins, or Littles if you prefer, far and wide about the Gentle Lands and caused them to roll their eyes or utter something about that McCrow curse that had made that branch of the ancient family daft. For it was the McCrows of long ago who'd gone off to battle in the southern waystes to help the elves in their long-ago wars against the Shadow. And it was the respectable branch that was greatly pleased by this history they claimed.Elves passing through was one thing. Elves were of course always putting on airs as was their wont and traipsing through the district on some mysterious business they preferred not share. But helping elves, in war no less, this was not done in current times and the MaCrows' long ago service, a captain among their ancestors in command of company of Bobbin spear and dagger[NC6] , could be laid as a source, or the source, of the curse that had plagued the McCrow family for three generations now as far as anyone was concerned. It was one thing to be polite to an elf passing through. A knight or lady journeying by with their entourage, or retinue, heading south to take a ship as had been done in the long ago. Perhaps even offer them an apple from your basket and never no mind the copper, m'lady. The Elves of Indolién were indeed fine and beautiful people to look at, but they was elves after all and elves was deadly peculiar and, as has been mentioned here in this part… not a favored Little trait. Their magical ways, the elves, and always up to intrigue and dark adventures, were considered nasty habits. Wars in the south, why? Wars in the east, well wasn't that a bit ago, times are different now. A lost fleet on the Western Sea, seems a bit irresponsible. And their tombs… the tombs of the old elves, the Eldaar, all those old grand barrows laid with many a curse up there in the hills just below the mountains, near the old haunted fortress, or so some said if any were to be believed, those were dark matters best not paid mind to for proper-like peoples as the Littles considered themselves to be.So, every Little purposed in their hearts to have as little as possible to do with elves, or strangers, beyond the required pleasantries of civilized persons encountering one another. Of course. This was how it was done. But such were never the ways of the Crazy Old Guthbert McCrow as had he been once known[NC7] , and still was in whisper and rumor and cautionary lesson. And it certainly was how Tappert seemed to be turning out if things continued the way they were going with these long summer hikes higher into the hills, and of course these late-night walks. And this was the greatest charge laid against him by the Littles down along the coast… He didn't manage his groves in the least. Left it all up to Ol' Ned Thom to[NC8]  the seein'.And of course, them queer maps. Always coming in special packages, creamy big envelopes straight from the sages and collectors of Indolién itself. Inked in gold, said Postman Symes when he stopped by your front post and had a cup of tea and perhaps a little bit of freshly baked lemon rosemary seedcake.Remember when I told you Littles aren't much interested in others' business? Well, that's just a lie they live. Inherently all Littles are madly interested in news, tales, and talk. But long ago they convinced themselves they shouldn't be and so, formally, they aren't.Now gossip on the quiet, a whisper behind the hand out[NC9]  by the post on a hot afternoon between chores, well that's just a tasty treat just as well savored as a slice of dark sugar pecan pie. No harm in that.“Nah one gettee a letter fine like that from Indolién[NC10] ,” Symes would tell one and all who'd listen each time a package came from Indolién for Saltblocke Farms. “Nah one a'tall.”So there on the late night on the verge of turning toward the witch hours was a small Bobbin about on the twisting roads deep in the district with his walking stick in hand, wrapped up in his tweed walking coat when he did indeed see the stumbling stranger making his way up the Old Road toward the High Hills. At first, he thought it might be one of those elven fortune hunters down lurking around the barrows and having gotten into a spot of trouble. The outcasts. And because Tappert was curious to see what was the matter he waited under the old lantern atop Smote Hill, which was one of the smaller hills before you reached the fork in the road that either led off toward Barrow Valley, or up into Dry Hills proper and the vast olive farms and the fine old homes that lay along the ancient cobblestone wall and road that was as old as time itself.Or so the oldsters say.Tappert was a keen observer. Had to be if one were to be a collector, was what Old Guthbert had always tried to teach him. And he was. As his Grand Uncle had been and as most McCrows were for no reason they could ever define. So, even now as he watched the stranger from under the lantern atop Old Smote Hill, he could see other bands of shadowy figures moving about down in the Hollows and even the occasional green-fire torch coming to life this way and that. And even though the wind had been up a while ago, he'd been sure he'd heard hunting horns like none other he'd ever heard, in the night.“Now that's a might strange,” murmured Tappert as he watched and waited for the elf to climb the hill. He was assuming it was an elf. And then perhaps once that happened, they might have a nice conversation as elves didn't mind the dark and the late and he'd had other conversations with some on late nights just like this. Tappert enjoyed spending a chat with elves when they were willing to. And the ones that came for the treasures of the barrows were more than like to talk, and want talk.In time the elf arrived, and it was clear, again because Tappert was a keen observer, that the stranger was indeed wounded or feeling ill, and was not an elf at all, but a man.Which was stranger still. Men were rare. Mostly all one ever saw of them were rumors and the much coveted Little gossip out by the post.“I say,” announced Tappert, for it was clear the elf who was not an elf but a man, was not aware of Tappert's presence as he made the top of Smote Hill. “You seem to be having a bit of a rough struggle.”The stranger stopped, swaying a bit, casting his gaze quickly over his shoulder and down into the hollows where the strange bands of dark figures had been roving about as though searching for something, or someone. Two things occurred to Tappert who as has been stated was a bit of a keen observer. A constant watcher. A collector, as it were.One. The man was holding a broken sword.Two. The bundle under the arm of the stranger was… smoking. Gray wisps drifted from its fatness. Curling and delicate, they climbed off into the night and drifted, deliberating[NC11]  it seemed, off toward the hollows. Drifting away and leaving a smell like… like Tappert would think later… burnt charcoal on the breeze. A not unpleasant smell. But very curious in that it was coming from inside an old and worn travelling pack where one usually did not keep fire. So of course, both were of interest to the peculiar Bobbin.“May I be of assistance?” asked Tappert. All Littles are always first kind. The stranger, muttering, came to himself at seeing the Little under the lantern's light atop the rise he'd come up with no little difficulty. There was a trail of blood droplets, dark in the night, behind him.“Who might you be, little one?” asked the stranger tiredly.Tappert planted his walking stick, stuck out his small hand and announced his name.“Allow me to introduce myself, stranger. Tappert Junctulius McCrow of the Wayside McCrows.”A long moment passed as the stranger continued to sway in his boots. Blood began to drip down onto the dirt of the road as he stood there, as though seeming to decide what to do next. This also, was not lost on Tappert.“Most just call me Tappert,” he continued friendly enough in the ensuing silence. “A few friends I have over in Ladybridge call me Tap Tap, but they are…”The Bobbin coughed.“Rascals but friends none the less.”“Ah,” said the stranger. Clearing his throat. His voice was odd, noted the Bobbin. Most elves had high almost musical sounding voices. Or like trumpets, especially if they were knights or noble family. But this one sounded like a highwayman or a drover. He had seldom talked with men, as men were not given to talk.“And…” began the Man. “Are you… uh… a relation of old Guthbert… McCrow,” he coughed at the last.Tapper was surprised and seemed to lean back at this.“I am indeed!” he exclaimed. “He was my good old grand uncle from way back. Gone now these five years.”The stranger looked over his shoulder and down in the vast zig zag of hollows he'd just climbed out of.“They're coming…” he seemed to mutter to himself, but Tappert caught this all the same. The Bobbin stepped closer, peering down into the darkness, and trying to see what the stranger saw. Though Bobbin eyes are good… they are not elf good. Still, he tried. The shadows were gone now.“Old Guthbert was known to Storytellers. We called on him in times of trouble,” rumbled the stranger.Tappert did not know this. In fact, this struck him as a very fantastic thing and yet one more interesting curiosity about his unbelievable uncle that was totally believable. He was still discovering secret rooms and passages and small treasures laid up through the Estate at Saltblocke Farms. And, as Tappert's quick little mind worked, the explanation of many mysteries he had often wondered about, unlocked, a little. Like some small number of tumblers in a difficult lock.“I say…” Tappert whispered to himself in the night as a few mysteries fell into place. The stranger stood silently as Tapper did the same, his mind roving over old memories.“I am badly wounded,” began the stranger and coughed a bit. “Waylaid along the roads.”“In a fight?” mouthed the Bobbin incredulously. Such things were unheard of here in the district mostly. Dreamt of maybe. As one dreams of adventures. But of course… Bobbins don't do adventures. That of course is well known, and a'wanderin' is nothing to be proud of.But there had been stories of dark figures on the roads of late. Tappert had heard such talk.“Set upon by dark forces from the South. Emissaries of the Doom Gate.”A small gasp escaped the Bobbin's mouth and Tappert felt himself tighten his grip on his old walking stick.“I would not presume on any of your fine folk unless the needs were dire,” continued the stranger, weaving slightly. “But I must ask for help now… I need to get off the road this night. Perhaps…”“A hiding place,” finished Tappert expectantly and knew not why he did so.The stranger grunted a bit as he took his hand away from his wound. Then… a soft almost quiet, “yes.”And without discussion or questions or even a nod to the worries that brought such evil mentioned as the Doom Gate and Dark Forces, Tappert was hustling the stranger along the road to Dry Hills and the old Abbey that was his home atop the hill. Not just because he was a good Bobbin, though peculiar Bobbin, who would render aid to a strange traveler in trouble on the road. But because this… smelled like… an adventure to him and he had the feeling he was caught up in something he'd been looking for in all those maps he loved so much. Please make sure to preorder the Audiook version of Strange Company2: Voodoo Warfare. Patricus - The Saint of Ireland

Deep feelings and endless thoughts of revenge captivated the young man's mind. For two weeks now, all he had thought about was the retribution he would inflict upon his captors when he got free, if he ever got free — something he knew would never happen.Just a fortnight ago the sixteen-year-old had been enjoying his fairly sheltered life as a Roman citizen on the west coast of Britain near the small town of Bannaventa Berniae. From all the comforts that came with having a father who was a local magistrate and living in a country villa with servants to do most of the work, mindlessly playing on the beach close to his home was only one of many leisurely activities. But in a flash without any warning, all the happiness and comforts were replaced by fear and hardship when Patricus was attacked by a gang of professional Irish slave raiders. It was efficient, violent, and traumatic.Rome had begun its decline a decade before; as a consequence its ships no longer secured the Western Sea surrounding the Celtic Islands. Without Roman rule, other ships were free to sail unmolested. As such, no political authority was concerned about Irish kidnappers. During the one-day journey across the sea, and now in iron shackles, all Patricus could think about were the stories he had heard as a child concerning the heathen culture of the Irish. While he never thought they were all true — how they would eat human flesh, shamelessly commit incest, and smear the blood of slain victims on their faces — he now seriously questioned them. As his kidnapping alone revealed, the Irish were not considered barbarians for nothing. And although Patricus claimed to be an atheist or just apathetic to Christianity, he couldn't help harboring bitterness towards his Christian parents and ironically, their God. The timeless question swirled in his maturing mind: How can a loving God allow evil things to happen? The fear of being forsaken incessantly bore upon his fragile conscience too, for Patricus really was alone. Most of the slaves taken by the Irish were women and children as most men were not easily secured. Patricus wasn't a boy, but he wasn't quite a man. And yet, it was in this time of his life, against the backdrop of Irish captivity, that God would forge something powerful within him — something so unexpected and so beautiful that it would not only change his destiny but the destiny of an entire pagan country.______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________But that was in the future. In the present, the very start of the the 3rd century, the only destiny Patricus was in charge of was the one hundred sheep he was made to shepherd in a cold and wet place somewhere on the west coast of Ireland. In coming to this new land it was like traveling back in time four hundred years. Although the primitive accommodations were difficult to get used to, it wasn't long after arriving that Patricus' anger surprisingly simmered down into a place somewhere between ambivalence and acquiescence. In the many days and nights that Patricus spend alone, the growing boy began to consider God, His will, His plan, and His love for the lost. But as he drew nearer to God, the shame of his past sins weighed heavily on him. One sin grieved Patricus in particular. With some time, though, he finally arrived at being at peace with God. He wrote about this process, “After I came to Ireland I watched over sheep. Day by day I began to pray more frequently — and more and more my love of God and my faith in him and reverence for him began to increase.”After six years of captivity, the twenty-two-year old was now a young man and had been forged into someone new. He was a new creation of sorts; the faith of his parents and grandparents had become his own. Fasting and praying were regular practices in his new life as a Christian. Looking back, Patricus wrote, “God used the time to shape and mold me into something better. He made me into what I am now — someone very different from what I once was,… before I was a slave, I didn't even care about myself.”And then on one unspectacular night, as Patricus was falling asleep, God clearly spoke to him in a dream saying, “You have fasted well — soon you will be going home.” Confused by this, as Patricus knew it was nearly impossible to escape and that the New Testament taught slaves to be obedient to their masters, he didn't immediately respond. But the next night God spoke again saying, “Behold, your ship is ready.” Putting aside all the questions and difficulties surrounding how a successful escape could actually happen, and there were many, Patricus succumbed to the conviction of God's leading. Simply put, if God spoke, then Patricus had to obey. But because no ships sailed to Britain from the west coast of Ireland, he would have to make the the 200 mile trek across the island. The arduous journey would take over a month to complete and would be slow and dangerous for anyone making the trip, let alone an escaped slave who had to avoid being seen. How he would get on the ship, and under what circumstances, were all unknown to Patricus. But as God called him to obedience, Patricus believed God would somehow provide a way — and He did. After getting on a ship, sailing for three days across the sea, and walking through Britain with the sailors for a few weeks, Patricus finally arrived to his home and to his family.“They took me in — their long-lost son — and begged me earnestly that after all I had been through I would never leave them again.”But although no one knew at the time, that was just what he was going to do.Once at home, after the many sweet celebrations and reunions with both friends and family, life for Patricus slowly returned to a comfortable normalcy. But that leisurely time didn't last for long. God spoke to Patricus again in another dream. Although this time it wasn't a call to leave Ireland, it was a call to return. The Irish were in much need of the gospel of Jesus as their island was cut off from much of the many other progressing civilizations. But it was the dream he received of the Irish people calling him back to walk among them that truly convicted Patricus to once again accept the strange but clear call of God. Once he resolved to preach the gospel to the people of Ireland, to the very people who kidnapped and made him a slave, Patricus believed he needed to undergo a theological education. Not only did he need this time of academic preparation to mature his faith and knowledge of the Lord, he needed some ecclesiastical weight behind him as he would be evangelizing alone in relatively uncharted and hostile territory. Within the church, Patricus most likely started as a layman and deacon, progressing to priest and finally being ordained as a bishop. After these years, Patricus, a more mature Christian servant, was ready to make his way back to the cold and wet lands of Ireland. Now not unwillingly as a slave for men, but willingly as a slave for Christ. While Patricus learned much about Irish civilization during his previous six-year stint, it seemed much had changed in the time he was away. As a slave and shepherd, Patricus was relatively distanced from the local wars and overall spiritual darkness of the landscape. The culture now awaiting him would be filled with feuding kings, political druids, and witches — many if not all their pretensions being opposed to the knowledge and rule of a Jewish rabbi, who claimed to be the Son of God. Thus, as is common in the Kingdom of Heaven, many of Paticus' first converts were societal outcasts, women and poor. In general, most tribal kings across the land were not receptive to the gospel or the Briton who brought it. Yet some were indifferent enough to allow churches to be built on their land. Season after season Patricus continued to travel throughout Ireland, preaching the gospel to anyone who would hear and planting house churches where he was received. Slowly and with much toil, Patricus was spiritually building the first body of Christ in Ireland. And as the years came and went, so did the decades. As an elderly man, the white-haired Patricus had now begun to baptize the sons and daughters of those parents he had converted years before. And as every generation presents its own unique and special challenges to the gospel, this one did as well. But from all the opposition Irish culture could throw at the British Bishop and to the Christian faith in general, the most hurtful and violent assault came not from their pagan hands, but from the hands of Christian tyrants from Patricus' own homeland.By 460 AD Rome was on its last leg — the empire was nearly all but collapsed. Britain was under attack on every front and from every direction. From the north and west, the Irish and Picts (Scottish) were pushing their raids south. From the east, German warriors were amassing in numbers. And from the south, around London, Saxons and Jutes had even begun building settlements. All these attacks from the outside were too much for the Britons to effectively and systematically handle. In this unprecedented time of political and social disarray, the old inhabitants of the island found themselves being protected from the foreign intruders by men of British-Roman nobility. As such, these men were Christian, although most were purely nominal. These few leaders who scraped together local armies and defended their communities against external threats became known as tyrants, warlords that protected their people with little to no oversight. For generations, the west coast of Britain was seasonally attacked by the barbarians from Ireland; but now tyrants, those specifically living on the west coast, not only wanted to force their enemies back but exact retribution for the years of unanswered assaults upon their people. The tide had turned. And during springtime, when the sea separating Briton and Ireland was calm, one particularly brutal tyrant named Coroticus began his offensive attack. The mission of the voyage was clear. Dock in an undivulged location, locate an unassuming clan, kill the men, and capture the women and children as cargo for slaves. The assignment was done efficiently and quickly. By the time Patricus was informed of the attack, Coroticus and those taken prisoner were already at sea. Upon hearing the news, Patricus found the place where his beloved flock had been attacked. It wasn't far from where many of them were baptized on Easter the day before. Some of the men of the group who had been murdered lay rigid, the oil on their forehead from being anointed still fragranced the spring air. Likewise, a number of women and children who had been baptized were certainly kidnapped in their baptismal robes. There was no lack of signs that these new converts traveling home were Christians, but that meant nothing to Coroticus and his mercenaries. Patricus was in between despair over the murder of his people and rage that it was brought by the hands of Christian soldiers from the place of his birth. In response, Patricus penned a letter to Coroticus and his men asking for it be circulated among the churches in Britain so the prisoners might be released. The letter was a heartfelt plea for divine justice, a stinging rebuke to Coroticus, and a petition for the church in Britain to excommunicate him. But after all of his attempts to pick up the pieces of his scattered flock, he couldn't change the fact that a small part of his clergy had been kidnapped and murdered. In the end, Patricus' only real and lasting hope was to be reunited with his spiritual sons and daughters in the next life, something not too far away for the aging Bishop. In the later years of his life, Patricus wrote two letters. The first was titled, Confessions, an account of his life and ministry and the other was A letter to the Soldiers of Coroticus, the plea for his people to be returned to their home. In both epistles we see the heart of Patricus, his deep humility, and the true love he had for the Irish people. Nearing death, In his Confessions, Patricus asked the Bishops in Britain that he be permitted to die among his flock in Ireland, even if it meant being buried in an unmarked grave. He wrote, “If I have ever done anything worthwhile for the God I love, I ask that I might be allowed to die here for his name with these converts and slaves — even if it means that I won't have a marked grave or that my body is torn apart piece by piece by dogs or wild animals or that I serve as a meal for the birds of the air.  I know if that were to happen, I would gain my soul along with a new body on that day we will undoubtedly rise again like the sun in the morning — like the son Jesus Christ our redeemer.” As such, the place of his burial is unknown, and even though we celebrate his life on March 17th, we only know that Patricus died sometime around 490 AD.While much of the details of Patricus' life are missing or obscure, the impact he made in Ireland, and the world for that matter, are crystal clear. His love for God and the people of Ireland, those considered barbaric and subhuman by many of the time and those who kidnapped him as a boy, remains an amazing testimony of what God can do with an obedient servant. As a young slave, Patricus was forced to shepherd sheep; but by the grace of God, he ended his long life as a willing shepherd of men. Like a true watchman, he protected and fed his sheep until the end. Patricus' example to us should move us to into a deeper place of love and service to all people – even those who seek our harm. Through it all — the kidnapping, the escape, the return, the trials, the hurt, and the suffering, Patricus never considered it a burden, but rather a gift. As he ended his Confessions, Patricus leaves us with these words.“My final prayer is that all of you who believe in God and respect him — whoever you may be who read this letter that Patrick the unlearned sinner wrote from Ireland — that none of you will ever say that I in my ignorance did anything for God. You must understand — because it is the truth — that it was all the gift of God.“And this is my confession before I die.”_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Most content of this podcast was taken from: Freeman, Philip, St. Patrick of Ireland, A Biography, Simon and Schuster Paperbacks, New York, NY, 2005. Text: Deuteronomy 11:10-25 Opening Statement: As we stand at the brink of a new year our hearts are filled with anticipation and challenge. Only God knows what the future holds but the possibilities are limitless. As we cross over into this new year, we do so with the same challenges Moses gave his people so long ago. As we journey into a new year we're reminded: I) To Remember God's Provision (Deut. 11:11) What is Moses saying to Israel here? Better yet, what is God saying to us through their experience? He will meet our needs! He is our source. Look closely at Deut. 11:11. Note that we take with us into a new year the promise of God's provision. “It is a land that drinks rain from heaven.” That is, He provides for us supernaturally. As we journey into this New Year, we're dependent on the supernatural provision of God. God is our source, and he has a way of using us to accomplish his purpose. As we journey, we are: II) To Remember God's Presence (Deut. 11:12) There were some who said to Moses that they doubted they could accomplish the task of taking the Promised Land. After all, the land was filled with giants and walled cities. But they had forgotten that they crossed over with God's provision and God's presence. New Year's brings a fresh vision of new opportunities. What a blessing to journey into a new year with the very presence of God Himself. The eyes of the Lord are upon us! Like the children of Israel, He did not bring us out except to take us in. We go into a new year with God's provision and God's presence. We also are: III) To Remember God's Promise (Deut. 11:13-15) Note that this promise is conditional. Verse 13 begins with “if” and verse 14 begins with “then.” Thus, this promise is not for everyone. It is for whom? Those who love the Lord their God and serve Him with all their heart and soul. Moses reminded the children of Israel, and us, what is of utmost importance — loving God. As we enter a new year we do so with God's promise. Finally, as we journey into a new year we are: IV) To Remember God's Protection (Deut. 11:16-25) Moses is reminding us that the Lord will go before us and drive out our enemies. His protection carries with it a warning. (Deut. 11:16-17). Again, note the repetition of the importance of loving our God. (Deut. 11:22). Moses knew the only way his people could love the Lord with all their heart was to saturate themselves with a conscious awareness of His word. As we journey into a new year we do so with God's protection. Moses goes on to tell them that “Then the Lord will drive out all these nations from before you, and you will dispossess greater and mightier nations than yourselves. Every place on which the sole of your foot treads shall be yours: from the wilderness and Lebanon, from the river, the River Euphrates, even to the Western Sea, shall be your territory. No man shall be able to stand against you” (Deut. 11:23-25). In Closing: As we journey into this new year Moses stands to remind us that as we go, we too will need God's provision. To depend on human effort is sheer folly. We will need God's presence. There will be times when we, like the children of Israel, wonder where God is. But His eyes are upon us. We cross over with God's promise. There may be times that this is all we have to hold onto. And we go with His protection. The Tory: Perspectives and Poems: Dr Pratt Datta

A story of risk and adventure The Jumblies BY EDWARD LEAR I   They went to sea in a Sieve, they did,    In a Sieve they went to sea: In spite of all their friends could say, On a winter's morn, on a stormy day,    In a Sieve they went to sea! And when the Sieve turned round and round, And every one cried, ‘You'll all be drowned!' They called aloud, ‘Our Sieve ain't big, But we don't care a button! we don't care a fig!    In a Sieve we'll go to sea!'       Far and few, far and few,          Are the lands where the Jumblies live;       Their heads are green, and their hands are blue,          And they went to sea in a Sieve.     II   They sailed away in a Sieve, they did,    In a Sieve they sailed so fast, With only a beautiful pea-green veil Tied with a riband by way of a sail,    To a small tobacco-pipe mast; And every one said, who saw them go, ‘O won't they be soon upset, you know! For the sky is dark, and the voyage is long, And happen what may, it's extremely wrong    In a Sieve to sail so fast!'       Far and few, far and few,          Are the lands where the Jumblies live;       Their heads are green, and their hands are blue,          And they went to sea in a Sieve.     III   The water it soon came in, it did,    The water it soon came in; So to keep them dry, they wrapped their feet In a pinky paper all folded neat,    And they fastened it down with a pin. And they passed the night in a crockery-jar, And each of them said, ‘How wise we are! Though the sky be dark, and the voyage be long, Yet we never can think we were rash or wrong,    While round in our Sieve we spin!'       Far and few, far and few,          Are the lands where the Jumblies live;       Their heads are green, and their hands are blue,          And they went to sea in a Sieve.     IV   And all night long they sailed away;    And when the sun went down, They whistled and warbled a moony song To the echoing sound of a coppery gong,    In the shade of the mountains brown. ‘O Timballo! How happy we are, When we live in a sieve and a crockery-jar, And all night long in the moonlight pale, We sail away with a pea-green sail,    In the shade of the mountains brown!'       Far and few, far and few,          Are the lands where the Jumblies live;      Their heads are green, and their hands are blue,          And they went to sea in a Sieve.     V   They sailed to the Western Sea, they did,    To a land all covered with trees, And they bought an Owl, and a useful Cart, And a pound of Rice, and a Cranberry Tart,    And a hive of silvery Bees. And they bought a Pig, and some green Jack-daws, And a lovely Monkey with lollipop paws, And forty bottles of Ring-Bo-Ree,    And no end of Stilton Cheese.       Far and few, far and few,          Are the lands where the Jumblies live;       Their heads are green, and their hands are blue,          And they went to sea in a Sieve.     VI   And in twenty years they all came back,    In twenty years or more, And every one said, ‘How tall they've grown!' For they've been to the Lakes, and the Torrible Zone,    And the hills of the Chankly Bore; And they drank their health, and gave them a feast Of dumplings made of beautiful yeast; And everyone said, ‘If we only live, We too will go to sea in a Sieve,—    To the hills of the Chankly Bore!'       Far and few, far and few,          Are the lands where the Jumblies live;       Their heads are green, and their hands are blue,          And they went to sea in a Sieve.

Readings for Saturday, February 27, 2021 “See, I am setting before you today a blessing and a curse…” -- Deuteronomy 11:26 Morning Psalm 43 1 Vindicate me, O God, and defend my cause against an ungodly people; from those who are deceitful and unjust deliver me! 2 For you are the God in whom I take refuge; why have you cast me off? Why must I walk about mournfully because of the oppression of the enemy? 3 O send out your light and your truth; let them lead me; let them bring me to your holy hill and to your dwelling. 4 Then I will go to the altar of God, to God my exceeding joy; and I will praise you with the harp, O God, my God. 5 Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my help and my God. Psalm 149 1 Praise the Lord ! Sing to the Lord a new song, his praise in the assembly of the faithful. 2 Let Israel be glad in its Maker; let the children of Zion rejoice in their King. 3 Let them praise his name with dancing, making melody to him with tambourine and lyre. 4 For the Lord takes pleasure in his people; he adorns the humble with victory. 5 Let the faithful exult in glory; let them sing for joy on their couches. 6 Let the high praises of God be in their throats and two-edged swords in their hands, 7 to execute vengeance on the nations and punishment on the peoples, 8 to bind their kings with fetters and their nobles with chains of iron, 9 to execute on them the judgment decreed. This is glory for all his faithful ones. Praise the Lord ! Midday Deuteronomy 11:18-28 18 You shall put these words of mine in your heart and soul, and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and fix them as an emblem on your forehead. 19 Teach them to your children, talking about them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you rise. 20 Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates, 21 so that your days and the days of your children may be multiplied in the land that the Lord swore to your ancestors to give them, as long as the heavens are above the earth. 22 If you will diligently observe this entire commandment that I am commanding you, loving the Lord your God, walking in all his ways, and holding fast to him, 23 then the Lord will drive out all these nations before you, and you will dispossess nations larger and mightier than yourselves. 24 Every place on which you set foot shall be yours; your territory shall extend from the wilderness to the Lebanon and from the River, the river Euphrates, to the Western Sea. 25 No one will be able to stand against you; the Lord your God will put the fear and dread of you on all the land on which you set foot, as he promised you. 26 See, I am setting before you today a blessing and a curse: 27 the blessing, if you obey the commandments of the Lord your God that I am commanding you today; 28 and the curse, if you do not obey the commandments of the Lord your God, but turn from the way that I am commanding you today, to follow other gods that you have not known. Hebrews 5:1-10 5 Every high priest chosen from among mortals is put in charge of things pertaining to God on their behalf, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. 2 He is able to deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is subject to weakness; 3 and because of this he must offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people. 4 And one does not presume to take this honor, but takes it only when called by God, just as Aaron was. 5 So also Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest, but was appointed by the one who said to him, “You are my Son, today I have begotten you”; 6 as he says also in another place, “You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek.” 7 In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. 8 Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered; 9 and having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, 10 having been designated by God a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek. John 4:1-26 4 Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard, “Jesus is making and baptizing more disciples than John” 2 —although it was not Jesus himself but his disciples who baptized— 3 he left Judea and started back to Galilee. 4 But he had to go through Samaria. 5 So he came to a Samaritan city called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. 6 Jacob's well was there, and Jesus, tired out by his journey, was sitting by the well. It was about noon. 7 A Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.” 8 (His disciples had gone to the city to buy food.) 9 The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask a drink of me, a woman of Samaria?” (Jews do not share things in common with Samaritans.) 10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,' you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” 11 The woman said to him, “Sir, you have no bucket, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? 12 Are you greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us the well, and with his sons and his flocks drank from it?” 13 Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, 14 but those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty. The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life.” 15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I may never be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water.” 16 Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come back.” 17 The woman answered him, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband'; 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one you have now is not your husband. What you have said is true!” 19 The woman said to him, “Sir, I see that you are a prophet. 20 Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you say that the place where people must worship is in Jerusalem.” 21 Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22 You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such as these to worship him. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” 25 The woman said to him, “I know that Messiah is coming” (who is called Christ). “When he comes, he will proclaim all things to us.” 26 Jesus said to her, “I am he, the one who is speaking to you.” Evening Psalm 31 1 In you, O Lord, I seek refuge; do not let me ever be put to shame; in your righteousness deliver me. 2 Incline your ear to me; rescue me speedily. Be a rock of refuge for me, a strong fortress to save me. 3 You are indeed my rock and my fortress; for your name's sake lead me and guide me, 4 take me out of the net that is hidden for me, for you are my refuge. 5 Into your hand I commit my spirit; you have redeemed me, O Lord, faithful God. 6 You hate those who pay regard to worthless idols, but I trust in the Lord . 7 I will exult and rejoice in your steadfast love, because you have seen my affliction; you have taken heed of my adversities, 8 and have not delivered me into the hand of the enemy; you have set my feet in a broad place. 9 Be gracious to me, O Lord, for I am in distress; my eye wastes away from grief, my soul and body also. 10 For my life is spent with sorrow, and my years with sighing; my strength fails because of my misery, and my bones waste away. 11 I am the scorn of all my adversaries, a horror to my neighbors, an object of dread to my acquaintances; those who see me in the street flee from me. 12 I have passed out of mind like one who is dead; I have become like a broken vessel. 13 For I hear the whispering of many— terror all around!— as they scheme together against me, as they plot to take my life. 14 But I trust in you, O Lord ; I say, “You are my God.” 15 My times are in your hand; deliver me from the hand of my enemies and persecutors. 16 Let your face shine upon your servant; save me in your steadfast love. 17 Do not let me be put to shame, O Lord, for I call on you; let the wicked be put to shame; let them go dumbfounded to Sheol. 18 Let the lying lips be stilled that speak insolently against the righteous with pride and contempt. 19 O how abundant is your goodness that you have laid up for those who fear you, and accomplished for those who take refuge in you, in the sight of everyone! 20 In the shelter of your presence you hide them from human plots; you hold them safe under your shelter from contentious tongues. 21 Blessed be the Lord, for he has wondrously shown his steadfast love to me when I was beset as a city under siege. 22 I had said in my alarm, “I am driven far from your sight.” But you heard my supplications when I cried out to you for help. 23 Love the Lord, all you his saints. The Lord preserves the faithful, but abundantly repays the one who acts haughtily. 24 Be strong, and let your heart take courage, all you who wait for the Lord . Psalm 143 1 Hear my prayer, O Lord ; give ear to my supplications in your faithfulness; answer me in your righteousness. 2 Do not enter into judgment with your servant, for no one living is righteous before you. 3 For the enemy has pursued me, crushing my life to the ground, making me sit in darkness like those long dead. 4 Therefore my spirit faints within me; my heart within me is appalled. 5 I remember the days of old, I think about all your deeds, I meditate on the works of your hands. 6 I stretch out my hands to you; my soul thirsts for you like a parched land. Selah 7 Answer me quickly, O Lord ; my spirit fails. Do not hide your face from me, or I shall be like those who go down to the Pit. 8 Let me hear of your steadfast love in the morning, for in you I put my trust. Teach me the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul. 9 Save me, O Lord, from my enemies; I have fled to you for refuge. 10 Teach me to do your will, for you are my God. Let your good spirit lead me on a level path. 11 For your name's sake, O Lord, preserve my life. In your righteousness bring me out of trouble. 12 In your steadfast love cut off my enemies, and destroy all my adversaries, for I am your servant. Twenty-first Sunday after Pentecost Occasion: Proper 25 Sunday, October 25, 2020 Year (cycle): A   The Collect: Almighty and everlasting God, increase in us the gifts of faith, hope, and charity; and, that we may obtain what you promise, make us love what you command; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Old Testament:  Deuteronomy 34:1-12 [Alternate: Leviticus 19:1-2, 15-18] 1Then Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, which is opposite Jericho, and the Lord showed him the whole land: Gilead as far as Dan, 2all Naphtali, the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the Western Sea, 3the Negeb, and the Plain—that is, the valley of Jericho, the city of palm trees—as far as Zoar. 4The Lord said to him, ‘This is the land of which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, “I will give it to your descendants”; I have let you see it with your eyes, but you shall not cross over there.' 5Then Moses, the servant of the Lord, died there in the land of Moab, at the Lord's command. 6He was buried in a valley in the land of Moab, opposite Beth-peor, but no one knows his burial place to this day. 7Moses was one hundred and twenty years old when he died; his sight was unimpaired and his vigour had not abated. 8The Israelites wept for Moses in the plains of Moab for thirty days; then the period of mourning for Moses was ended. 9 Joshua son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, because Moses had laid his hands on him; and the Israelites obeyed him, doing as the Lord had commanded Moses. 10 Never since has there arisen a prophet in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face. 11He was unequalled for all the signs and wonders that the Lord sent him to perform in the land of Egypt, against Pharaoh and all his servants and his entire land, 12and for all the mighty deeds and all the terrifying displays of power that Moses performed in the sight of all Israel. Alternate: 1 The Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 2 Speak to all the congregation of the people of Israel and say to them: You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy. 15 You shall not render an unjust judgement; you shall not be partial to the poor or defer to the great: with justice you shall judge your neighbour. 16You shall not go around as a slanderer among your people, and you shall not profit by the blood of your neighbour: I am the Lord. 17 You shall not hate in your heart anyone of your kin; you shall reprove your neighbour, or you will incur guilt yourself. 18You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against any of your people, but you shall love your neighbour as yourself: I am the Lord. Psalm:  Psalm 90:1-6, 13-17 [Alternate: Psalm 1] 1 Lord, you have been our refuge *        from one generation to another .2 Before the mountains were brought forth,   or the land and the earth were born, *        from age to age you are God. 3 You turn us back to the dust and say, *       "Go back, O child of earth." 4 For a thousand years in your sight are like yesterday when it is past *        and like a watch in the night. 5 You sweep us away like a dream; *        we fade away suddenly like the grass. 6 In the morning it is green and flourishes; *        in the evening it is dried up and withered. 13 Return, O Lord; how long will you tarry? *        be gracious to your servants. 14 Satisfy us by your loving-kindness in the morning; *        so shall we rejoice and be glad all the days of our life. 15 Make us glad by the measure of the days that you afflicted us *        and the years in which we suffered adversity. 16 Show your servants your works *        and your splendor to their children. 17 May the graciousness of the Lord our God be upon us; *        prosper the work of our hands;        prosper our handiwork. Alternate: 1 Happy are they who have not walked in the counsel of the wicked, *        nor lingered in the way of sinners,        nor sat in the seats of the scornful! 2 Their delight is in the law of the Lord, *        and they meditate on his law day and night. 3 They are like trees planted by streams of water,   bearing fruit in due season, with leaves that do not wither; *        everything they do shall prosper. 4 It is not so with the wicked; *        they are like chaff which the wind blows away. 5 Therefore the wicked shall not stand upright when judgment comes, *        nor the sinner in the council of the righteous. 6 For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, *        but the way of the wicked is doomed. Epistle:  1 Thessalonians 2:1-8 1You yourselves know, brothers and sisters, that our coming to you was not in vain, 2but though we had already suffered and been shamefully maltreated at Philippi, as you know, we had courage in our God to declare to you the gospel of God in spite of great opposition. 3For our appeal does not spring from deceit or impure motives or trickery, 4but just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the message of the gospel, even so we speak, not to please mortals, but to please God who tests our hearts. 5As you know and as God is our witness, we never came with words of flattery or with a pretext for greed; 6nor did we seek praise from mortals, whether from you or from others, 7though we might have made demands as apostles of Christ. But we were gentle among you, like a nurse tenderly caring for her own children. 8So deeply do we care for you that we are determined to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you have become very dear to us. Gospel:  Matthew 22:34-46 34 When the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, 35and one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. 36‘Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?' 37He said to him, ‘ “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.” 38This is the greatest and first commandment. 39And a second is like it: “You shall love your neighbour as yourself.” 40On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.' 41 Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them this question: 42‘What do you think of the Messiah? Whose son is he?' They said to him, ‘The son of David.' 43He said to them, ‘How is it then that David by the Spirit calls him Lord, saying, 44 “The Lord said to my Lord, ‘Sit at my right hand,    until I put your enemies under your feet' ”? 45If David thus calls him Lord, how can he be his son?' 46No one was able to give him an answer, nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions.

Deuteronomy 34:1-12 Then Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, which is opposite Jericho, and the Lord showed him the whole land: Gilead as far as Dan, all Naphtali, the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the Western Sea, the Negeb, and the Plain—that is, the valley of Jericho, the city of palm trees—as far as Zoar. The Lord said to him, “This is the land of which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, ‘I will give it to your descendants’; I have let you see it with your eyes, but you shall not cross over there.” Then Moses, the servant of the Lord, died there in the land of Moab, at the Lord’s command. He was buried in a valley in the land of Moab, opposite Beth-peor, but no one knows his burial place to this day.  Moses was one hundred twenty years old when he died; his sight was unimpaired and his vigor had not abated. The Israelites wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days; then the period of mourning for Moses was ended. Joshua son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, because Moses had laid his hands on him; and the Israelites obeyed him, doing as the Lord had commanded Moses. Never since has there arisen a prophet in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face. He was unequaled for all the signs and wonders that the Lord sent him to perform in the land of Egypt, against Pharaoh and all his servants and his entire land, and for all the mighty deeds and all the terrifying displays of power that Moses performed in the sight of all Israel.   I am sure many of us remember the horrific incidents in Charlottesville, Virginia a few months ago, when racists and skinheads converged onto the small city to voice their racism, and to protest the taking down the statutes of Confederate leaders. A counter protestor was killed when a racist plowed his car into the crowd and shots were fired, and fists and kicks were thrown, and it was an awful, awful moment in the life of our country. The Sunday after the events I joined a few thousand at the Daley Plaza downtown to express our stance against racism, and our support of those who were feeling under attack by the latest wave of vitriol hurled at black and brown people. After listening to a series of speakers a young man stood up and made a stark challenge to us: cut out of our lives our friends and family who continued to practice racism with their words and/or their lives. At first, oddly enough, I thought, well, of course, we shouldn’t tolerate messengers and practitioners of hate and discrimination in our lives – I mean, there is something to be said about the fact that who we hang out with, who we share our lives with, is ultimately a reflection on us and what we value as well – even the New Testament offers this idea to its readers. But almost immediately, I was struck by the impossibility of putting that challenge into action in my own life – I am a Southerner, despite my lack of an accent, and almost every relative and every white friend of mine has said or done something that is racist – and I am certainly not immune from that charge either. I am a recovering racist, still working on aspects of my thought and life that perpetuate racism in my own heart and in my surroundings. I think I’ve spent most of my adult trying to get “woke” as the young people say nowadays, to wake up from the parts of me that had been infected by the white privilege I bear within me that is all around me, and around most of my family and friends. But if I were to do what the speaker at that rally asked me to do, I would probably have no blood family left in my life, people that I do very much love and care about. My parents were good people, they were heroes of mine, loving and kind people for the most part, and still they harbored ideas and thoughts about African-Americans that sadden me, that are shameful to me and that besmirched the goodness they generally practiced in their lives. And what about me – how do I cut myself out of my own life, me who is still working on that places in my heart and soul that haven’t quite woken up yet, haven’t yet reached the Promise Land, so to speak, the land where we can greet each other in all of our racial, sexual, and political complexity and discriminate against each other, explicitly or implicitly? Most of us in this room are probably dealing with some part of this problem, this imperfection, this sin we see in ourselves and in the ones we love, and how to navigate our relationships with those who have no desire to wake up and think that we are foolish for questioning the assumptions they imparted to us years and years earlier, consciously or not.   Of course, all of this has to do with the problem of how profoundly imperfect we all are, how despite our best hopes and wishes for ourselves and others, we rarely can live up to the goodness we desire to practice and hold within our hearts. There has been much criticism of original sin, perhaps rightfully so, that we are somehow born bad, or at least part of us is. Of course, the greater message of the Bible is that we are also born good – God said so at the beginning of creation, that God looked over the world, and us, and said it was good. But whether or not you buy the doctrine of original sin, what it does try to get at is something we all know is there, in each of us, in all of us, if we are honest with each other, and that is that there is shadow in us that doesn’t want to welcome the light, that doesn’t want to resist racism, that doesn’t want to wake up, that doesn’t want to give a damn about people I don’t know and don’t understand, a part of us that doesn’t want to do the right thing by the earth, that doesn’t want to give a damn about anything except ourselves and the people closest to us – and sometimes not even them. There is shadow even in a heart created within the light of God’s goodness, and it shouldn’t and doesn’t surprise many of us that despite the goodness and sometimes even greatness of our family or personal and public heroes, within them, as within us, there is shadow, some prejudice that surprises us, some bigotry that shows up unexpectedly, some unwillingness to do the right thing, at least in this part of our lives. I know this is true because it is true for me and everyone I know, and that desire for the perfect hero, the perfect politician, the perfect spouse, the perfect friend, the perfect parent, it all eventually crashes down, as we see them for who they are, and we see ourselves for who we are – people striving to do the right thing, but often failing to do so, sometimes even unaware that we have missed the mark, “missing the mark” being a common way we Christians speak of sin.   All of this desire for the perfect hero came too fore this week when I was thinking of the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation, or at least the anniversary of Martin Luther’ posting of the 95 these against the practice of indulgences in the city of Wittenberg, Germany. In a recent issue of The Christian Century magazine (Oct 25, 2017), Rabbi Noam Marans reminded us Christians of the awful anti-Semitic legacy of Brother Martin Luther and how we Protestants were no better, in practice, than the Catholics we sought to correct during the Reformation. He points that early in his career, Martin Luther took a positive stance towards Judaism, writing an essay in 1523 called “That Jesus Christ Was Born a Jew,” in which he noted that our Lord Jesus was himself Jewish, and that we Christians and Jews are sisters and brothers because of that connection. And yet by 1543 Luther had changed his mind about the Jewish people because he felt they were not readily converting to Christianity as he had hoped, and he wrote a screed called “On the Jews and Their Lies,” which is just patently anti-Semitic, in which he says ”…thus when you see a real Jew you may with good conscience cross yourself, and boldly say, ‘There goes the Devil incarnate.’” Later the Nazis would use this essay and other of Luther’s writing as part of their justification for their campaign of genocide against the Jewish people. But of course those vile words weren’t the only words Luther wrote, and so much of what else he wrote was beautiful and joyful and true – listen to brother Luther, yes BROTHER Luther:   The whole being of any Christian is faith and love. Faith brings the person to God, love brings the person to people.   God does not need your good works, but your neighbor does.   I have held many things in my hands, and I have lost them all; but whatever I have placed in God's hands, that I still possess.   There are some of us who think to ourselves, 'If I had only been there! How quick I would have been to help the Baby. I would have washed His linen. How happy I would have been to go with the shepherds to see the Lord lying in the manger!' Why don't we do it now? We have Christ in our neighbor.   Whoever drinks beer, he is quick to sleep; whoever sleeps long, does not sin; whoever does not sin, enters Heaven! Thus, let us drink beer!   What we have with Luther is what we have with all those that we love, and with our very own selves – people of often great light and love who carry within them some deep shadows, some places within them, within us, that God has not broken into, because we will not Her into those spaces, those corners of our hearts, our minds, that we would rather keep free of love and grace and understanding, whether or not we are aware of it.   But the ambiguity of people, especially the ambiguity of our heroes, shouldn’t surprise us, though of course, it still does, we who live in hope that people can actually live up to all their words, all their values, or that we can always live up to all of our own values. Look at brother Moses in our text today, he who stands high upon Mount Nebo, at the very cusp of his life’s work, which was leading his people into the Promised Land, and yet looking out onto a land he will never enter himself. God gives him only a glimpse of what must have seemed like Eden to him, after so many years of wandering in the desert because the people were stubborn and ungrateful and continued to try the patience of God. What brings Moses to this moment is the fact that he too was imperfect, that he too was sometimes often quick to anger and arrogance, and it showed up in an incident which is recounted in the book of Numbers, chapter 20. The people are thirsty, and they complain to Moses and Aaron, and they pray for water on the people’s behalf, and God grants this prayer, and Moses does as he is told – he strikes the rock and water pours forth. But what seemed to condemn Moses to die on Mount Nebo, and never be able to enter the Promise Land, are the words he said to the people – Listen, rebels, shall WE bring water for you out of this rock! We honestly don’t know for sure what angered God so deeply about Moses’ words, but most think that it was because he had deigned to take credit for the miracle – shall WE bring water for you, we Moses and Aaron. He had made it about him and not God, it became about the Messenger and not the Message, it became about Moses and not the Promised Land or about Moses and not God. Whether or not you or I think it fair, that is what seemed to prompt God to close the door to the Promised Land to both Moses and his brother in law Aaron, both who would die out with the first generation of Israelites because of their stubbornness. Joshua will lead the people into the Promised Land, not Moses, not Aaron, and so Moses dies on that high and holy mountain, buried by God’s own hands, and praised by the writer or writers of Deuteronomy as the greatest of the prophets of Israel. God seems to choose flawed human beings to do great things in this world, a truth you see being replicated over and over again in the Bible.   Now, to be sure, not everyone is Moses, or Luther, or Calvin, or Martin Luther King Jr, people whose light was so great that we often ignore the darkness they carried within them. I want us to be clear that knowing that all of us are flawed, imperfect human beings capable of great wrong doesn’t mean that we simply dismiss the imperfections of our leaders, excusing them from the task of becoming better leaders, to become better human beings. I often say about brilliant and gifted people that with great light comes great shadow, but that doesn’t mean the shadow should be ignored or un-confronted. I’ll share with you a couple of ways how I think we can distinquish the great leaders, maybe even the prophets of our age, from those who simply took power or were given power by an electorate: first, good leaders rarely make the mistake of confusing the mission and the messenger, the mistake of confusing the word they’ve been given with the proclaimer of that word, the messenger. Moses made that mistake at that rock, striking in anger and frustration, taking credit for what he did not do, but he did such a thing very rarely – he was Israel’s greatest prophet because he almost never wavered from his mission, which was to lead God’s people into the Promised Land. You can tell a good leader by her unwillingness to make it about her, that the point is not Moses but the Promise Land, that the point is not Martin Luther but the hopeful transformation of the church for his time, that the point is not Martin Luther King, Jr. but the racial equality that must happen in this world. All of these flawed, imperfect souls, kept the point the point, even as they stumbled personally, writing vile words, not living up to their best values, or whatever. It was never about them, but the goal, the calling they had to be prophets of their age, and the tellers of great truth.   But, you know, you could argue that even thieves and serial murders and narcissists have the same sort of focus, that they too keep the point the point, they too can dismiss themselves in favor of a laser focus on their vile mission. And that is why the mission itself matters, the calling matters, because it matters whether or not a person too points to a Promised Land of sorts, to a land of milk and honey. What I mean by this is that it isn’t good enough to just have a goal, a focus – I mean, one can have bad goals, a bad mission, a skewed conception of the Promised Land, that oddly includes only you and your own. But the Promised Land in the Biblical tradition is not just about me, it was never about Moses, but the Promised Land was always about us, about a world where there is plenty of milk and honey for the both of us, for all of us. From the laws that given to Moses were supposedly given by God to govern this land, you have important principles like the 50th year Jubilee, where all land bought and sold was returned to its original owner, so that there would never be a simple accumulation of land and money to a small few. And the courts of justice could not and would not be bought by the richest, and thus justice could be meted out fairly, and the widows and their children, the most vulnerable, would always be taken care of, and the very land itself would rest every 7 years, and the stranger who stumbled into land of Israel would be no stranger, for those in the Promised Land would remember that they too were once strangers in the land of Egypt, and all strangers would be treated with justice and compassion. A good leader doesn’t just have a clear mission – Pol Pot of Cambodia had a clear mission, as well – but the Mission itself must be a just and good one, a Promised Land not for the few but for all of us. Luther cast a vision for the renewal of the church, and though there were grave mistakes made on the way, including by Luther himself, the Promised Land for him was a church where freedom resided, where we understood that we were loved by God through our faith, and not because of what we do or don’t do, that the Scriptures were for the people, as dangerous as such an idea that might have sounded like 500 years ago. So much of that vision, that mission has come true, in every part of the church universal, and that is because it was a Promised Land that included all of us, each and every one of us.   Before I end today’s sermon, I just want to remind us of something, or maybe I am simply reminding myself, in these less than heroic times, where the real prophets among us seemed to have been drowned out by the false prophets of this age, the false prophets who do not have a vision of the Promised Land that includes all of us, which means that what they offer is no Promised Land at all. But, in fact, there is a Promised Land, there is a world to come, a world that can be actualized, and for us Christians it is the Kingdom of God of which Jesus speaks, the realm of God, which mirrors the Promised Land of Jesus’ ancestors, a land of milk and honey for both friend and stranger alike, a place for all of us who have left the Egypts of this world and who seek freedom in a new land. Our work is surely to keep praying and working for this new world, to do works of justice, and to be present and aware of our own imperfections as we struggle the imperfections of others. We need new prophets, new leaders in this day and this age, ones who focus on the realm of God alone and not on themselves, at least not too much on themselves, and ones that can cast a vision that looks like the one that Moses cast, that Jesus cast over two thousand years ago. Now, whether or not those prophets will arise in this age, in all of their imperfections, I don’t know, but I do believe this – in the end, this Promised Land, this new world to come, the one where all are welcomed, where there is justice for everyone, all of it will come to pass one day, because it is simply what God wants, and what God wants, God eventually gets. We can hasten our collective entry into Promised Land by working with God and working beside each other, or we can delay our entry and entry of others into the Promised Land by doing nothing. But know this: in the end, the Promised Land will come with or without our help. For your sake and my sake, and the world’s sake, I’d rather be on the side of making the Kingdom of God a reality sooner rather than later – but make no mistake, it will come, it will surely come, this new world and it will include you and me, in all of our imperfections, alongside other flawed and beautiful human beings, friends and strangers, because, you see, it is a Land that has been promised to us, and God will keep that promise, the one that was made to all of us. Amen.

Liyah Babayon: Armenian refugee, Activist, Entrepreneur, and Business owner of Ooh La La consignment boutique in Twin Falls, Idaho. I first became familiar with Liyah after she was featured in a Slate article that explored the upsurge of anti-refugee activism in the city of Twin Falls, Idaho. I approached her to do a podcast with me, and what resulted was an in-depth and fascinating discussion into her personal history as a refugee, of starting a business during the financial crisis of 2007-2008, the Armenian Genocide, the geopolitical chess game being played between the United States and Russia in Syria and the greater Middle East, her personal experience with the xenophobic anti-refugee activism that has grown in this community, and living in this place and time during the great experiment that is America, as well as many other fascinating subjects. This is one of my favorite episodes. This conversation was recorded in Ooh La La, Liyah's consignment boutique in Twin Falls, Idaho. Hile Gunslingers and members of the DTP Ka-Tet, Tadd and Peter come together around the campfire with Gunslinger burritos, and whittling knife at hand and Palaver on the mind! Join Tadd and Peter as they talk about the new photo showing the face-off of Roland and Flagg. With news being light and being the final episode of 2016 the boys dip into the mailbag and go through some emails including some vacation photos that appear right from The Western Sea, as well as the new book covers for the new release, and small questions like multi-verse resets.    Engage with DTP on Social Media to Palaver between shows. Also check out the show notes at DarkTowerPalaver(dot)com for links to all the articles and pictures mentioned in this podcast.    Next time look for Round Table #25, will we have a trailer by then?! There will be water if God wills it.
