Dr. Glaire Anderson traces artistic and intellectual interpretations of sovereignty within Islam, through two 10th century bronzes bearing the inscription, al-mulk. Bronzes bearing the Arabic word for sovereignty, al-mulk, were popular luxuries traded across the medieval Islamic territories. But these two objects - a large basin, and a small bowl – were both discovered far from home at opposite ends of Eurasia, in Inner Mongolia, and southern Spain. Remote yet related, they reveal how cultural hegemony wrestled with adaptation, religion with secularism, and tradition with modernity, exposing a period of transhemispheric modernisation. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for February 25, 2021 is: slipshod SLIP-SHAHD adjective 1 a : wearing loose shoes or slippers b : down at the heel : shabby 2 : careless, slovenly Examples: "'What's worse is the rules about misinformation on social media are confusing and inconsistent, and enforcement of those policies is slipshod at best,' says Bill Fitzgerald, a privacy and technology researcher in CR's Digital Lab." — Consumer Reports, 13 Aug. 2020 "But Ryan Day couldn't help but harp on a slipshod second half in which the Buckeyes were outscored by 10 points and outgained by 126 yards." — Kyle Rowland, The Toledo (Ohio) Blade, 9 Nov. 2020 Did you know? The word shod is the past tense form of the verb shoe, meaning "to furnish with a shoe"; hence, we can speak of shoeing horses and horses that have been shod or shodden. When the word slipshod was first used in the late 1500s, it meant "wearing loose shoes or slippers"—such slippers were once called slip-shoes—and later it was used to describe shoes that were falling apart. By the early 1800s, slipshod was used more generally as a synonym for shabby—in 1818, Sir Walter Scott wrote about "the half-bound and slip-shod volumes of the circulating library." The association with shabbiness then shifted to an association with sloppiness, and the word was used to mean "careless" or "slovenly."

Are consumers really concerned about security and privacy in the products they buy? And if so, how could manufacturers capitalize on these attributes to sell more of their products? Consumer Reports has recently published an important, comprehensive study of consumer attitudes towards privacy and security, including the historical evolution of these feelings. The result is a roadmap which companies can use to better serve this fast-growing market. Today we'll discuss this study and its implications with Ben Moskowitz from CR's Digital Lab. Benjamin Moskowitz is the Director of Consumer Reports' Digital Lab, a major initiative to expand CR’s work on privacy, digital security, and emerging concerns in digital consumer protection. Previously, he served as Director of Development for Innovation for the International Rescue Committee, where he secured more than $29 million in funding as a founding member of the Airbel Center—a research and development unit that designs, tests, and scales life-changing solutions for refugees and people affected by conflict. The trauma of abuse, in any form, can be devastating for victims, both when it occurs and well into the future due to the emotional scars that remain. However, there is hope in Christ for all people, including those who have suffered the trauma of abuse. Bethany Miller talks with Caryn Amandola. Caryn is a pastor's wife, an intern counselor at Redeemer Counseling Services in New York City, and a leader of Mending the Soul, which provides biblically-rooted and psychologically-proven abuse curriculum. Caryn has trained up others to lead Mending the Soul groups and works with her husband, John, towards the healing of abuse survivors, as well as training churches to prevent abuse. In this Digital Lab we will hear more about the hope of healing for those whose stories involve trauma as well as how those in ministry can best be of support.
Why can't we all just get along? Often churches have viewed para-church organizations as competition; but it's possible to have a mutually beneficial relationship for the Kingdom of God between a church and a para-church organization! We’d like to help shine a light on how. Eric Miller, director of ministry operations for CE National, talks with Chris Eckard & Frankie Hourigan in this Digital Lab. Chris is an area director for Young Life in Frederick, Maryland, and Frankie is an area director for Fellowship of Christian Athletes in Frederick.

By Sean Martin Here we are. The industry didn’t self-regulate, so governments all around the world have been forced to step in to protect us from the “evil” corporations looking to use and abuse our personal information for their financial gain. Will the laws help and how long will it take companies to do the right thing? Or will they simply do what they need to do to meet the letter of the law? And, if so, what “letter” and what laws will they meet? Sadly, we don’t have the answers to any of these questions yet—as only time will tell. It’s in cases like this that my co-founder, Marco Ciappelli, and I like to power on the ITSPmagazine time machine to look at what the future holds. For this is a special occasion, I’ve asked Marco to turn the ignition key for us as he joins us remotely from Italy, giving all of us an opportunity to take a journey with some fellow time travelers. Together, we get a sneak peek into future of privacy—a future that extends beyond the regulations; beyond compliance. Our goal with this conversation is to help us as citizens—AND us as organizations—navigate what is turning out to be the Wild Wild West of privacy legislation. Who are the time travelers? I’m glad you asked. Let’s meet them… - Kristina Bergman, CEO, and Founder, Integris Software - John Gevertz, Chief Privacy Officer, Visa - Ben Moskowitz, Director, Digital Lab, Consumer Reports - Kalinda Raina, Vice President, Head of Privacy, LinkedIn ___________ Learn more about Data Privacy Day and all of our coverage here: https://itspmagazine.com/data-privacy-day-2020-ncsa-san-francisco-coverage View all of our event coverage here: https://itspmagazine.com/itspmagazine-event-coverage

Data Privacy Day 2020 Event Coverage - Chats on the Road Hosts: Sean Martin & Marco Ciappelli Guests: Kelvin Coleman | Stacey Gray | Ben Moskowits This year, the Data Privacy Day theme is A Vision for the Future. And, as you know, when we talk about the future here @ITSPmagazine, we also like to take a look back to the past. In this episode of Chats on the Road to Data Privacy Day 2020, we do just that, along with our guests, Kelvin Coleman, Executive Director at the NCSA, Senior Counsel at The Future of Privacy Forum, and Director, Digital Lab at Consumer Reports. The following questions remain, and we hope to get some answers during the upcoming event—Are we approaching privacy in the right way? Where we are attaching it to security? Where it's all about protecting the data, so it doesn't get lost or stolen? Or should we really be looking to flip things on its side to look at privacy from a different angle? Perhaps our view should include the data, the metadata, the context of the data, the use of the data, the actions around the data, and, most importantly, the impact of that use of the data? Join us on Data Privacy Day to keep the conversation going in person and online. See you there! ___________ Learn more about Data Privacy Day and all of our coverage here: https://itspmagazine.com/data-privacy-day-2020-ncsa-san-francisco-coverage

One of the top up-and-coming producers, Vigel is making his mark on the dance music world at the moment. Starting from the unique and widely supported "Crunch" collaboration with Bobina on Nicky Romero's Protocol Recordings, Vigel deserved the right to be heard. in 2015 he released an impressive instrumental called “SQRT” on Armada Trice. The track became one of the most played records of the year on Armin Van Buuren's ASOT Radio and got played by most of the superstar DJs including Hardwell, Martin Garrix, R3hab, David Guetta and more. This released was quickly followed up by a huge collaboration with Matisse & Sadko released on Doorn/Spinnin called “TENGU” , it received huge hype from the premiere on UMF by Steve Angello and made it to the Beatport Top 5 after just 1 week in charts. Right after this, his collaboration with Tom Swoon "Nothing To Lose" got released on Armada Trice. Supported on every major festival in the world from ASOT and Tomorrowland to Ultra and EDC, on radio shows from BBC Radio 1 to Sirius XM, Vigel made a huge impact only at beginning stages of his career. With crafted and unpredictable sound showing his huge potential, he's definitely one to watch for the next years.
