It's time again for our now-annual Turkey Month, and we're kicking off a November's worth of big budget turkeys with Cutthroat Island, the pirate movie that plundered Carolco of their last remaining doubloons, and sent Geena Davis' career as a swashbuckler off the side of a boat. CHAPTERS: (00:00:00) - The Nextlander Watchcast Episode 113: Cutthroat Island (1995) (00:00:18) - Intro. (00:02:08) - Our first turkey for November: Cutthroat Island! (00:07:37) - The Renny Harlin factor, and the initial (fairly different) pitch for this movie. (00:12:06) - THEY KILLED CAROLCO! (00:18:15) - The cast we got, and the cast we could have had. (00:23:30) - Listing off some of the myriad curses that befell this production (and some debate about Davis' stunts). (00:32:16) - Despite all the troubles, they pulled this one off at the box office, right?!? (No.) (00:38:49) - Addressing any lingering questions before we get into the movie proper. (00:43:58) - Break! (00:44:24) - We're back, and here's what the hell is happening in this movie. (00:54:21) - The introduction of William Shaw. (00:59:28) - I saved a guy who speaks Latin, what did you ever do? (01:02:26) - One of the few bright spots: the carriage chase. (01:04:41) - These puzzles suck. (01:06:11) - Time to dig up another uncle. (01:12:43) - Gunshot wound? No problem! (01:17:45) - An interminable mutiny before we finally get to Cutthroat Island. (01:25:31) - Oh look, treasure. (01:29:49) - Let's blow some stuff up for like 30 minutes. (01:37:11) - We saved the treasure! (...and Shaw!) (01:40:32) - Final thoughts. (01:46:04) - Some talk about our film for next week: Waterworld! (01:51:28) - Outro.

We interrupt our regular programming for the first of several periodic check-ins with the X-Men's exploits on the silver screen! This "show within a show" begins with 2000's X-MEN - the movie that put comic book adaptations back on the map. Apropos of the concept itself, X-MEN's path to a theatrical debut was long and hard-fought. Plans to translate the series to film can be traced back to the early '80s, with comics creators Gerry Conway and Roy Thomas collaborating on a prospective screenplay for Orion Pictures. After Orion folded, subsequent efforts would invite interest from the likes of Kathryn Bigelow and James Cameron for Carolco Pictures. Carolco's bankruptcy saw the rights revert to Marvel, and development stalled for years with the company unable to make the case for their successful comics franchise. However, impressed with the X-Men's unexpected Saturday morning dominance for Fox's children's television division, producer Lauren Shuler Donner thought it only made sense to option the property for 20th Century Fox's live action slate in 1994. The next two years brought drafts and treatments by 'SEVEN' screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker, author Michael Chabon, and filmmaker Ed Solomon. The studio considered Brett Ratner, Robert Rodriguez, and Paul W.S. Anderson, but it was Bryan Singer in whom Fox believed they had found their perfect fit for director. Following Singer's hiring, a finalized script was eventually hammered out, with David Hayter receiving sole screenwriter credit (despite contributions from Solomon, Christopher McQuarrie, and Joss Whedon ending up in the onscreen product). Still, Fox was hedging their bets due to a string of critical and commercial failures by superhero adaptations in recent years, capping X-MEN's budget at $75 million (a paltry sum by today's standards). Despite some shake-ups along the way (Exit Original Wolverine and Cyclops actors Dougray Scott and Jim Caviezel, respectively), what materialized was a lean and efficient picture, brought to life by an incredibly talented - if not entirely star-studded - ensemble cast. X-MEN would overperform to the tune of $300 million worldwide, establishing itself right out of the gate as a blockbuster franchise that would carry Fox to huge box office receipts for years to come. It would likewise serve as a career-defining film series for many of its performers, themselves household names today. With the Marvel Cinematic Universe poised to make a go at recreating the magic, X-Position takes a look back at where it all began! Join Jenny, Tim, and unofficial third co-host Keithie as we break it all down. From the creative choices, the good, the bad, and the ugly one-liners, to the cast that could have been (Glenn Danzig's Wolverine? Bob Hoskins??), and even Magneto's Mutant Cave Rave, no thought shall remain unread (or unsaid).

Auguest, a month of amazing guest-hosted episodes, begins! I'd have to be pretty stupid to host a podcast about killing and then kill him the way I described in my podcast. I'd be announcing myself as the killer. I'm not stupid. TW: This episode includes a discussion about a scene which depicts forced sex/sexual assault/rape as well as Sharon Stone's recent revelations that she did not consent to her genitals being shown on screen. It's not just global warming, Verbal Diorama is officially getting hotter, and finally tackling the definitive erotic thriller of the '90s - BASIC INSTINCT! A spec script that Mario Kassar of Carolco paid $3 million for, which became the movie everyone was talking about, but mainly for one infamous scene in particular. Joining me for this sexy investigation is a man who can wield an ice pick like no other. A man who likes rough edges, and a podcaster who falls for the wrong guest appearance. After the underwhelming critical and commercial response to THE ABYSS, James Cameron knew that he had to get moving on his next project as soon as possible. As fate would have it, the executives at Carolco — who'd recently produced films like RAMBO: FIRST BLOOD PART II and TOTAL RECALL — had acquired the rights to the TERMINATOR franchise, at great expense, and asked Cameron to write and direct a sequel. In this episode, we'll trace the production of TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY, from those early, chaotic days of development, through the time of its release, when it became one of the biggest films of all time. audio alert - Sam was on his webcam for the first 7 minutes so there is a weird audio shift when he switches to a good mic. Nothing painful to your earholes, just figured we owe you an explaination. Proceed! Knocking off Beverly Hills Cop while showcasing Gary Daniels as a cheaper JCVD but forgetting that he can't act past his gob being open, White Tiger can't figure out what it is or what it should be so it just manages to be mid-90s karate mush. Why doesn't the movie work or why did I absolutely wish I'd watched something else? Well I'll tell you who's fault it is. It isn't Cary Tagawa. He's fantastic, of course. And he's allowed to go to 11 so it's not director Richard Martin's fault either. It's not even Gary Daniels fault despite his lack of acting, as the big draw is the fight sequences which he co-choreographed with prolific stunt-man Lauro Chartrand. So whose fault is it that White Tiger is a total boring slog of a film? Well, I'm blaming the 90's. See all the big stinker makers were out of the biz or out of their prime by 1996. Cannon was done and Carolco was on its way. DTV was on the rise as you could crap out a turd on a budget and distribute globally for a song. So the studios just wanted to start turning fast bucks and having passion for your project wasn't a benefit, it was a hinderance. What business did Richard Martin even have directing a film? Well, he said he could do it and do it fast. That's all it took for it to get a green light.  The problem with it and say the same film made 5-10 years prior, is there was a hope that if you did a good enough job, if you worked hard enough, if you believed it what you were doing enough the execs in their ties would see you and give you a Brandon Lee shot. Its the American Dream right? Well sorry, but that doesn't exist. So instead you've got no one giving a crap in the writing ("just redo Beverly Hills Cop, again") and no one behind the camera caring either. It's not that anyone screwed up, it just is that no one had the opportunity to screw up either. Which sorry, makes for boring film for our niche AND the big films that go on to win Oscar gold. You must have some spark of passion and care for art. Otherwise, its just a toaster or a '15 Toyota Camry. Your film is now an appliance.

Each week of May Madness we will re-release an episode we think pairs well with the movie of the week, and conveniently place it at the top of your feed. This week, we figured that the movie that launched Carolco into the lat pack stratosphere (latosphere?), would pair extremely well with another iconic Carolco joint, Total Recall. Enjoy!

Ahoy matey, and welcome back to another exciting episode of Not A Bomb Podcast. For this week’s show, Troy and Brad are joined by Eric from The VHS Files, to discuss 1995’s swashbuckling adventure film - Cutthroat Island. This pirate movie once held the infamous distinction as being the biggest box office flop of all time and put the final nail in the coffin of Carolco Pictures. Cutthroat Island had a notoriously troubled production. Numerous crew members were fired. The script was continually rewritten, and a broken pipe caused massive amounts of sewage to pour into the water tank inhabited by actors. All of these issues created a budget out of control and bad press for the filmmakers. The guys breakdown the history of Carolco and examine the downfall of one of the most successful independent motion picture production companies of all time. Plus, Troy finally becomes a man. And we actually find out if we should worry about dying from quicksand? Cutthroat Island is directed by Renny Harlin and stars Geena Davis, Matthew Modine, Frank Langella, Maury Chaykin, Patrick Malahide, and Stan Shaw.If you want to leave feedback or suggest a movie bomb, please drop us a line at NotABombPod@gmail.com. Also, if you like what you hear, leave a review on Apple Podcast.Be sure to check out of friends over at The VHS Files. Cast: Brad, Troy, Eric

The course has been set; there is no turning back; prepare your weapons; and summon your courage for the cinematic adventure of a lifetime—Cutthroat Island! The majority of the words above come from the trailer for the epic shipwreck that is Cutthroat Island. Yet they could also serve as a warning. Once you start watching it, there truly is no turning back; and it is a film that lives up to its infamous reputation. Cutthroat Island is a mess from start to finish. From the hammy acting, to the suspect dialogue, to the overabundance of poorly choreographed action and explosions, there is little doubt as to why it once held the Guinness Book of World Records' dubious distinction of being the biggest box office bomb in history. With a production budget of over $98 million, it grossed barely more than $10 million. Adjusted for inflation, it lost upward of $147 million. There was no pirate booty to be found in the Christmas season of 1995. It's loss was so traumatic that it helped bankrupt Carolco, the studio that produced it.  Carolco, though, was not the only casualty. Careers were legitimately affected by Cutthroat Island's critical and financial drubbing. Geena Davis, who starred as pirate captain Morgan Adams, worked sparingly for years after; this was also due in part to an acrimonious divorce from the director of this film, Renny Harlin. Her co-star, Matthew Modine as William Shaw, would see his days as a leading man float off into the sunset, a rudderless ship adrift. Oddly enough, Harlin—who had become a commodity because of his work on Cliffhanger and on franchises like Die Hard (he directed Die Harder), as well as A Nightmare on Elm Street (he was at the helm of the abysmal, but successful The Dream Master)—would continue to get semi-prominent gigs.  Despite evidence such as this to dispel the notion of his early promise, he'd be tapped to direct several other high profile films over the course of multiple decades—Deep Blue Sea, Driven, 12 Rounds, Skiptrace. Hollywood can be weird. That said, Cutthroat Island did expose his myriad of flaws as a filmmaker. If given the freedom and the money to pursue his wildest desires, he couldn't find a happy medium or produce a competent picture. Style over substance works if the style is actually interesting. Here, it wasn't. Not even remotely. In any event, this movie is a sight to behold. You'll laugh; you'll cry; you'll drink until it all makes some semblance of sense. So sit back, enjoy an aged barrel of Blackbeard's Breakfast from Heavy Seas Brewing, and get ready set sail for turbulent seas. I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Capt. Cash, and Chumpzilla are waging pirate war with Uncle Dawg for a fabled trove of plastic treasure! This Week’s Segments: Introduction – We drop anchor on one of cinema's all-time disasters, examining everything from the best line of the film (is there one?) to the over-the-top brilliance of pod favorite Frank Langella.  (00:00) Mind Boggling Questions and Pre-Mortem One-Liners – Well, we all had questions about what the hell happened with this movie; and after being subjected to its awful banter, Capt. Cash challenges us to identify who uttered some classic movie phrases and to whom they said them. (34:57) The Cutthroat Island Drinking Game and Recommendations – Capt. Cash attempts to kill you all with a booze-filled way to watch this movie, and we offer our picks for the week. Next up: Run, baby, run ... it's Escape from L.A.! (1:04:29) And, as always, hit us up on Twitter or Facebook to check out all the interesting factoids—the bizarre V8 Juice obsession, the video game tie-in, and more—from this week’s episode!
