In this episode of the Journey of My Mother's Son podcast, I sit down and talk with Brittany and Cody Holifield. I had Cody and Brittany on the show after we first met at A Year to Volunteer project at Sam Houston Jones State Park back in March of 2022. At that time, they were a full-time RV family of four traveling throughout the United States under the name Hitch to Hitch. A lot has changed for them over the past couple of years, and they are about to start a new chapter. Hitch to Hitch is changing to Halls Top Hangout. What is Halls Top Hangout, you ask? It's a brand new off-grid adventure camp in the beautiful East Tennessee Mountain town of Hartford. Hartford, Tennessee is located about an hour from Knoxville, Ashville, and Gatlinburg, on the edge of the Cherokee National Forest. Cody and Brittany want to create a space where people can come to, unplug, and reconnect with nature. To find out more about what's going on at the new Halls Top Hangout Adventure Camp, check out their website at https://www.hallstophangout.com/.

From timber harvesting, wildlife conservation to recreation, the conversation navigates through the involvement of volunteer groups in forest maintenance, the challenges of land management, and future plans. The term 'Disney effect' is explored noting the misconception of the reality of the outdoors, and the talk culminates with suggestions for public involvement in preserving public lands, with notable mentions of organizations like Friends of the Cherokee National Forest. The Art of Living Podcast: Things That Make You Go, Hmm Welcome to another episode of the TAO Living podcast, The Art of Living. I'm your host, Lou Corleto, and today we're going to explore some intriguing concepts that will make you go, "Hmm." Have you ever noticed the health food section in a grocery store? It's interesting to think about what that implies about the rest of the store. If that section is labeled as "health food," what does it make everything else? It's a thought-provoking observation about our society and the way we categorize things. We live in a world where we drive on parkways and park on driveways. We have life insurance for death and health insurance for sickness. We even use natural lemon juice in our dish detergents while consuming artificial lemon juice in our drinks. These contradictions make you wonder about the choices we make and the labels we assign to things. I had the incredible opportunity to explore Antarctica a few years ago. Witnessing the majestic humpback whales migrating thousands of miles without deviating even one degree left me in awe. How do they navigate the open ocean with such precision? And the penguins in Antarctica, enduring extreme temperatures and winds, huddle together to protect their eggs and themselves. They instinctively migrate from the outside to the inside and vice versa, without any leader guiding them. It's fascinating to think about how these animals tap into their inner guidance and trust the process. In contrast, during the devastating tsunami of 2004, countless lives were lost despite our advanced warning systems. However, the wild animals sensed the impending danger and sought higher ground, saving themselves. How did they know? How do they tap into their instincts without directions, maps, or GPS? It's a question that makes you ponder the innate wisdom within us and why we often fail to access it. Science has shed some light on these mysteries. Harvard Medical School recently discovered that humans possess a protein in our eyes called cryptochrome, similar to the one found in animals. This protein is believed to play a role in our intuitive abilities. We've been told that we have five senses, but in reality, we have more. Our sixth sense, intuition, is a powerful tool that we often overlook. Furthermore, science has revealed that there are more brain frequencies than the commonly known beta, alpha, theta, and delta. Gamma and epsilon are states of higher consciousness that we can tap into. These states of awareness are available to all of us, yet we often fail to access them. So, how do we reconnect with our inner guidance and tap into our intuition? The answer lies in the art of living, a philosophy that combines contemporary science, spirituality, quantum physics, mysticism, and Eastern philosophy. Tao Living, as derived from 40 years of personal experience and backed up by scientific research, offers a way of life that can be implemented by anyone. When we are fully present in the moment, we open ourselves up to life's invitations. By letting go of the need to search and allowing our inner light to connect with the guiding light, we align ourselves with the flow of life. Tao Living brings us to the intersection of science and spirituality, providing practical tools to experience presence and transform our lives. Our thoughts shape our reality. When we align our breath, eyes, and mind, we align with life's invitations, and presence finds us. Awareness is curative, and through new experiences, our minds are stretched, preventing us from reverting to our old ways of being and seeing. I invite you to join us for this year's Tao Living Experience, The Art of Living, from May 16-19, 2024. This transformative retreat will take place on our beautiful sanctuary, nestled on 92 acres at the foothills of the Cherokee National Forest. It's an opportunity to reconnect with your inner guidance and vision, and walk your life forward in trust. Jennie Byers returns in Part 2, to move past her ability to talk to your dead relatives who have passed on, and now connect you to the higher worlds of God. Jennie opens up to Brad about The Source Field where creation began, reconnecting to God, the false timeline we are living under, and the return of human race to their true divine destiny. This is a mind-blowing episode as Jennie unpacks the future of humanity. About Jennie Byers: Jennie Byers is a multi-dimensional, Living Light Language translator and the founder of Spirit Reunions Sanctuary, located in the Cherokee Mountains of East Tennessee. The land sits on what is nicknamed the “Crystal Mountains'' which is in one of the largest vortex energy spots in the United States. The property has been designated as a protected forest greenbelt and backs up to the Cherokee National Forest. Jennie's mom, Kitti, was able to access and communicate in ascended dimensions when she was still alive. One day, her Spirit showed her a soul contract the two of them created before Jennie and her were born. Kitti was shown that after death, she was going to move to the other side of the veil to assist Jennie in her spiritual awakening so they could work together on a common spiritual mission. Shortly thereafter, although Kitti had been healthy her entire life, Kitti was diagnosed with Leukemia and left her physical body three weeks later at only 52 years of age. Kitti now works closely with Jennie from the higher dimensions as her gatekeeper and spiritual partner. They work as a team to assist others to heal trauma and to re-connect with loved ones who have ascended to “Heaven". Jennie accesses ascended realities and communicates information through an intelligent language her mom calls “Living Light Language” More information can be found at Spiritreunionsanctuary.com About Awakened Nation: Fueled by the passion to ignite game-changing conversations, award-winning author Brad Szollose created Awakened Nation—a podcast dedicated to deeper conversations with today's outliers and cutting edge entrepreneurs, idea makers and disruptors, bestselling authors, activists, healers, spiritual leaders, professional athletes, celebrities, politicians and rock stars...conversations that take a deep dive into the extraordinary. This is art 1 of the 2 part interview. In the second interview, Jennie shows us how she helps with the Ascension. The Cherokee National Forest is divided into northern and southern sections by the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The 650,000-acre forest is the largest tract of public land in Tennessee and adjoins other national forests in Virginia, North Carolina and Georgia. The forest is home to 30 developed campgrounds and numerous picnic areas, over 700 miles of trails, seven whitewater rivers, two Forest Service scenic byways where you can enjoy a scenic drive through the mountains, the pursuit of wildlife, the thrill of whitewater, a night under the stars, or solitude on a backcountry trail.Hundreds of miles of lake shoreline and water await the fisherman, boating enthusiast, skier, and nature lover. South Holston Lake, a Tennessee Valley Authority reservoir covering 7,580 acres, is considered one of the top two lakes in Tennessee and among the best in the Southeast for smallmouth bass fishing and also is well known as a fly fisherman's paradise. The lake also provides many other recreational opportunities for residents, with 60% of its shoreline bordered by the Cherokee National Forest.Bristol is known for NASCAR as it is home to one of the world's greatest and most popular racetracks. Bristol Motor Speedway, which seats in excess of 150,000, hosts NASCAR Sprint Cup events in April and August and both draw fans from all 50 states and more than a dozen countries.Music also gives Bristol a universal appeal as the city holds the honor of being named the Birthplace of Country Music by U.S. Congress in 1998. In 1927, the legendary Bristol Sessions took place in the downtown area, giving birth to the “Big Bang” of modern country music with the likes of The Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers taking part in the historic occasion. The Twin Cities boast numerous parks, golf courses, spectacular caverns to go along with plenty of great restaurants – many of which are locally owned and operated – and wonderful shopping opportunities.Bristol is also rich in theater and arts and is home to the historic Paramount Center for the Arts, as well as Theatre Bristol. Today I'm going to unpack a really beautiful concept that I just love. It's called Escape Velocity. In celestial mechanics, “escape velocity” is the minimum speed required for a free non-propelled body to escape the influence of a primary body's gravitational pull - to be able to generate infinite distance from it. Think of a rocket taking off. If it doesn't have enough escape velocity when it takes off from the earth, the rocket will end up not making it through the stratosphere. It will return to Earth because it didn't have enough momentum… What about you? Are you experiencing the momentum needed to break free from unwanted influences, habits, and mindsets so that you can be fully expressed + thriving? Take a moment to take inventory. You deserve that next level of freedom - your next breakthrough! And there's one way we can totally help you with that. Lydie, my partner, and I are facilitating a profound retreat that will give you tools to escape the gravitational pull of your old stories, wounds, traumas, limiting beliefs, and more. We'd love to have you come play with this. It's May 18 - 21, 2023 on our 92-acre property in the foothills of the Cherokee National Forest... It's called The Art of Living Retreat. Four days of deep dive. Very intimate, only 22 people. No falling back - only outward bound freedom, yeah?! Love to have you if that resonates. Click here to register.
Come summer, we head to the high country of the Southern Appalachians to escape the sizzling heat at lower elevations. Today, we talk about 7 of our favorite high country hikes for summer, hikes that meet one of two criteria for summer exploring: they either need elevation to escape the heat, or they must have access to water. Better still, both. Since 1993, the first Saturday of June has been observed as National Trails Day. Administered by the American Hiking Society, it's a day when we celebrate our trails, either by hiking (or, in the case of "blue" trails, paddling) them, or by rolling up our sleeves to do trail maintenance or blaze a new trail. Today, we talk a little about the history of National Trails Day as well as what's going on this year.To learn more about National Trails Day, visit the American Hiking Society web site here.In the newsFor more information on the reopening of portions of the Occoee National Whitewater Center in Tennessee's Cherokee National Forest, go here.To find what facilities are now open along the Blue Ridge Parkway ion North Carolina and Virginia, go here.Explore with Us!To learn more about our GetHiking! and GetBackpacking! adventures, visit GetGoingNC.com, click on Explore with Us!

This week Clint and Dawson sat down with Will Skelton. Will is an author, a conservationist, a champion for our public lands and has a lifetime of adventure and travel. Will has always loved travel of any kind and has traveled extensively throughout the world, including visiting all 50 states, including several times for most of them, and all the Canadian provinces, and has visited over 70 counties in all continents except Antarctica. His favorite countries world-wide are New Zealand, Canada, and Peru and his favorite US states are Utah, New Mexico, and California. Will has been significantly involved in Cherokee National Forest trails and wilderness preservation issues since the early 1970's. He was a leader of the effort that led the United States Congress to protect significant portions of the Cherokee in the 1980's. Will subsequently edited a hiking guidebook to the Cherokee's trails, with the help of well over two dozen hikers and writers. It was published by the University of Tennessee Press in 1992 as Wilderness Trails of the Cherokee National Forest; a new and expanded edition entitled Cherokee National Forest Hiking Guide was published in 2005. Currently a third edition is in the works with the trails being hiked in 2021. Will has also been actively involved with the Cherokee National Forest in various trails and land use issues that have come up over the years. Thanks for listening!

Jesse Kerns was born in Greene County Tennessee. Growing up in East Tennessee, Jesse was always drawn to the mountains, streams and the great outdoors. The Cherokee National Forest, Nolichucky River, Great Smoky Mountains, and his family farm all served as early settings for Jesse's growing appreciation for our region's greatest asset - its natural geography.Jesse began his career in the stock car racing industry, fielding cars and winning championships with top-tier luminaries like Richard Childress, Ty and Austin Dillon, Dale McDowell, and Scott Bloomquist. His time in the racing industry cultivated his values of teamwork, efficiency, and determination, as well as providing him ample opportunities in the realms of land conservation, big game hunting, live bait fishing, and wilderness protection with his Childress Racing teammates. In 2018 Jesse relocated to Chattanooga to bring his years of experience and passion for the outdoors to pursue a career as a land broker. His personal experience with conservation and gentleman farming was invaluable to his clients as they seek their own opportunities in land ownership, development, and management. As 2019 approached Jesse and his brother John came together and forged New Bloom Labs. At first Jesse continued his real estate duties as he learned the hemp business by attending trade shows, marketing functions, and contributing during heavy volume at the lab. 2020 brings Jesse full-time at New Bloom and he heads the company's expansion into Texas. He brings all of his years of experience in multiple fields to assemble a remote laboratory location with utmost efficiency. He is most eager to get on the road and meet hemp producers all over the United States. Visit New Bloom Labs.
Yes, thru-hiking is a genre of backpacking. So is there a difference? Well, yes, there are some obvious differences — the time you're on the trail, how much stuff you can take. But we take issue with a fellow podcaster who compared thru-hiking to a marathon and backpacking — in this case, of the 1-, 2-, 3-night variety — to a "fun run." Those aren't exactly fightin' words, but they do require a response, a clarification of sorts, which we give in brief in today's podcast. Also, in our news segment we mention the closure of the Bald River Falls Trail in the Tellico River District of Tennessee's Cherokee National Forest for repairs. Jay’s guest today is Jeffrey Hunter, a senior program manager with National Parks & Conservation Association (NPCA) in Asheville, NC where he works on issues related to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and the Appalachian National Scenic Trail.Jeff spent 20 years in the telecommunications industry when a thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail inspired him to realign his career with his conservation values. From 2008 to 2013, Jeff led the Tennessee Wild wilderness campaign focused on permanently protecting nearly 20,000 acres in the Cherokee National Forest, including 4.5 miles of the Appalachian Trail.
