Its a beer named after one of the more famous mountain hikes in San Diego, but do you pronounce it Cow-Ls mountain or Koh-ls mountain? Either way this is another must try IPA from San Diego Brewing Company. Brewer Chris utilizes his own CTZ blend of Citra, Talus and Zappa hops to craft a tropical yet very dank drinkable IPA. Also not to be out done by the beer, Tyson packs the holy trinity of pork on to one pizza with the Brew Co Combo!
The Bums wrap up summer hours, and get back in front of the mic with S4:E0114, where the top knot starts with a recap of NFL action through the first two weeks; Rocky discusses the cultural problems and refusals of Chicago Bears ownership and management; Dan Campbell forced to pull up stakes amongst death threats (pro tip: take the fucking points); in NCCAF chatter, NIU catching lightening in a beer bottle, UCO is riding our last nerve, along with Neon; UT vs. UM is game of the week; MLB updates include some amazing individual contributions at the hands of Shohei and Judge; the MLB playoff picture begins to take shape; and Paddy waxes poetic with another IDNKT segment on baseball. The ponytail pops off with a Hall of Fame edition of the Bums intergalactically famous beer review, with Russian River Brewing Company's “Pliny the Elder” (ABV 8%) — a nearly perfect Double IPA choke full of Amarillo, Centennial, CTZ, and Simcoe hops resulting in an incredibly well balanced taste with plenty of bitterness; hats off to RRBC and their hat tip to the scholar, historian, officer, writer, and Roman Naturalist- Pliny the Elder (who purportedly perished while rescuing people during the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 A.D. — Pliny has also rescued the Bums thirst for HoF beer; HUGE thanks to “V the Younger” for going over the road to fetch us some freshy Pliny (not all heroes wear capes); the flag flying game of Chicago's Mexican community is en fuego; talk turns to travelogues from Rocky (Cabo) and Paddy (smitten with the mitten); drama within Perry Ferrel's musical act ‘Jane's Retraction' is unsurprising but a bummer nonetheless; another Paddy Report is chronicled on the topic of Smoke/CO detectors; and end with a bird watching diatribe. Summer is over, and the Bums have dusted off their lunch pails — we're so back.Recorded on September 19th, 2024 at B.O.M.'s global headquarters ‘East Bunker' in Chicago, IL USA.
Drekker Brewing The Ice Treaty of Peace is an American IPA by style. We got together with our BFFs at Back Channel Brewing & brewed what we're calling a Midwest IPA. The idea was to create a beer that had the malt bill, body, and bitterness of a West coast IPA, but the fruity, dry hopped juiciness of a New England IPA. It turned out exactly like we'd hoped with a malty, biscuity body, a really nice, balanced bitterness, and some super fruity and juicy hoppiness from loads of CTZ, Motueka, Simcoe, & Superdelic. This craft beer is 6.5% ABV. In this craft beer review, we will take a look at the color, smell, and taste.

O., Shaner, N. C., Lipscombe, D., Moore, C. I., Hochgeschwender, U. Abstract: We developed a platform that utilizes a calcium-dependent luciferase to convert neuronal activity into activation of light sensing domains within the same cell. The platform is based on a Gaussia luciferase variant with high light emission split by calmodulin-M13 sequences that depends on influx of calcium ions (Ca2+) for functional reconstitution. In the presence of its luciferin, coelenterazine (CTZ), Ca2+ influx results in light emission that drives activation of photoreceptors, including optogenetic channels and LOV domains. Critical features of the converter luciferase are light emission low enough to not activate photoreceptors under baseline condition and high enough to activate photosensing elements in the presence of Ca2+ and luciferin. We demonstrate performance of this activity-dependent sensor and integrator for changing membrane potential and driving transcription in individual and populations of neurons in vitro and in vivo. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.10.17.512538v1?rss=1 Authors: Shiu, F. H., Skelton, H., Berglund, K., Fernandez, A. M., Gutekunst, C.-A. N., Robinson, E. R., Wang, Z., Gross, R. E. Abstract: Previous studies in human patients and rodent models of Parkinsons disease (PD) have established neuroprotection of dopaminergic (DA) neurons in substantia nigra pars compacta (SNC) by physical exercise, but the precise origin of this neuroprotective effect has yet to be elucidated. In this study, we tested a hypothesis that enhanced activity of DA neurons in SNC results in neuroprotection using the unilateral 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) injection model in mice. To increase activity of DA neurons chronically and specifically, we injected an adeno-associated viral vector carrying a step-function luminopsin (SFL) - a fusion protein of light-emitting Gaussia luciferase and light-sensing step-function channelrhodopsin 2 - into SNC ipsilateral to 6-OHDA using the pan-neuronal human synapsin I promoter or the Cre-lox system in transgenic mice expressing the recombinase under control of the tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) promoter. Upon application of SFL substrate, coelenterazine (CTZ), the luciferase moiety of luminopsin emits bioluminescence which in turn activate the opsin moiety. Daily injection of CTZ for 4 weeks ameliorated a stereotypical behavior, namely ipsiversive rotations, induced by unilateral 6-OHDA. In addition, postmortem immunohistochemistry against TH revealed less severe neurodegeneration of DA neurons compared to vehicle-injected control animals. Furthermore, when mice were pretreated with ANA-12, a selective antagonist for tropomyosin receptor kinase B (TrkB), the behavioral improvement and neuroprotective effect were diminished. These results suggest that increased neuronal activity of DA neurons provides neuroprotection against 6-OHDA injury and alleviates its symptoms through the brain-derived neurotrophic factor-TrkB pathway. Mash out at 168. Once mash is finished cool wort to 100 and pitch the Lacto. Keep the wort between 90-100 degrees F for a day or so regularly checking PH. 3.5 is going to be somewhat sour and 3.1 is going to be about as low as you want to go. Once you hit the PH that you want, start the boil process as normal. After the beer ferments out, add in your fruit ~1lb / gallon brewed. I used costco frozen mixed but you can use whatever you'd like. I recommend freezing whatever fruit you use before hand to kill any unwanted bugs and breakdown the cell walls of the fruit. NOTE: It is very important to bring your water to this temperature and keep it at this temperature throughout your mash. Put all measured grain fermentables into the mash bag and secure it over your boiler. By secured, we mean that all of your fermentables should be underneath the water, but still in the mash bag. Start your timer for 60 minutes. During the mash, be sure to sanitize all equipment with Star San sanitizing solution (1 oz to 5 gallons of water, let sit for 1 min). -Boil- After 60min is up, remove your mash bag with the fermentables from your boiler and heat wort to boiling temperature. Once wort starts boiling, set your timer for 60 minutes and add 1.5 oz Hallertau (4% AA) hops to the boil. With 10 minutes left, add any Irish moss or Whirlfloc tablets for clarification. Start preparing an ice bath to cool your wort down after the boil has ended. At 0 minutes, turn off your heat and allow to cool in ice bath. Once wort is cooled to 150° F, add 1 oz. CTZ (16% AA). -Cooling- Take the hot kettle off the burner and transfer it to your ice bath. Swirl the pot to better cool the wort. Continue to add more ice and cool water to the ice bath as the pot cools down to ~90° F. Pour into fermenter. To oxygenate more, you can place the fermentor lid on and shake the wort for a few minutes. Take your original gravity reading here. -Pitching- Sanitize your yeast package so as not to contaminate your wort. Add your 1/2 package of Lutra Dried Kveik to the wort. Fill your airlock to the fill line with water and Star San solution to ensure sanitization. Store your fermenter in a warm, dark place for approximately 7-10 days or until fermentation has completely stopped. (If temperatures are warm enough, fermentation should only last a few days for this yeast strain) -Carbonation- After 7-10 days have passed, the fermentation should have stopped. If you wish to carbonate your beer you can calculate the suggested amount of corn sugar to add HERE and bottle for another 2-3 weeks or force carbonate in a corny keg. Good morning and welcome to your Friday dose of Your Daily Meds.Bonus Review: What is the chemoreceptor trigger zone (CTZ)?Answer: The CTZ is located in the area postrema - in the lateral walls of the 4th ventricle. It is outside the blood brain barrier. Various substances can stimulate the CTZ, which has inputs into the vomiting centre, resulting in vomiting.Public Healthiness:Which of the following is an example of primary prevention?Immunisation programBreast cancer screeningPerformance of a Papanicolau (Pap) smearRegular hearing tests for workers in high noise environments Pulmonary rehabilitation programHave a think.Scroll for the chat.Kiddies Case:A three-week-old infant comes to the Emergency Department with his parents. They report that their child has been vomiting and losing weight. They also think there has been a yellowing of their baby’s skin. The infant is afebrile and haemodynamically stable.Which of the following is the most likely diagnosis?GalactosaemiaHepatitisGilbert’s syndromeCholecystitisNeonatal haemochromatosisHave a think.More scroll for more chat. The Preventer:This question tests knowledge of primary, secondary and tertiary prevention methods.Primary prevention methods are those aiming to limit the incidence of disease and disability in the community. This is achieved by reducing or eliminating the factors that would impair health and function, and promoting factors that are protective. The objective of primary intervention is to prevent the occurrence of disease. Examples of primary prevention include immunisation programs, such as tetanus prophylaxis, and programs to discourage the uptake of smoking.Secondary prevention aims to prevent progression of disease, with examples including breast cancer screening, Pap smear tests, and screening for hearing loss in high-noise environments. Tertiary prevention aims to reduce the effects of established disease, with examples including pulmonary rehabilitation and self-management programs for those with chronic illness.Yellow Baby:Galactosaemia, or galactose-1-phosphate uridyltransferase (GALT) deficiency, is an autosomal recessive disorder characterised by impaired conversion of galactose-1-phosphate and uridine diphosphate (UDP) glucose to UDP galactose and glucose-1-phosphate. Almost all infants on lactose-containing diets, such as milk formulas, will manifest poor weight gain.Normally, galactosaemia is detected in new-born screening tests. It commonly presents with poor growth, jaundice, vomiting, lethargy and, in some cases, cataracts.Hepatitis and cholecystitis are unlikely given the infant is afebrile, and the young age.Gilbert’s syndrome is a mild disorder of bilirubin metabolism in which there is decreased activity of the glucuronosyltransferase enzyme. Jaundice often manifests in times of illness. Typically, no treatment is required for Gilbert’s syndrome, and it is unlikely to cause vomiting and poor weight gain.Neonatal haemochromatosis is a disorder characterised by severe liver disease and deposition of iron in extrahepatic sites. It is commonly associated with oligohydramnios, splenomegaly, oliguria and jaundice in the few days after birth.Bonus: What happens during a cough? Before Ryan starts stereotyping, Travis bursts his bubble when he explains how Dogecoin could, in fact, be a bubble. We touch on Texas's trouble and share our sympathies for what they are going through, but we have nothing but condemnation for Ted Cruz's Kentucky Waterfall. We get into the meat of our discussion when Mic explains how America's habit of disinclusion turned into intentional disinclusion that blossomed into a culture of disinclusion. We wonder how can we start to change that culture when Coke's idea of supporting the Black Community is by flexing their $300 Million ad spend targeting them. We wrap things up wondering why is everyone down for a civil war? The Civil War wasn't fun. Everyone needs to think deeper and tweet less. Listen now for Black History in The CTZ.
This week Dan, Walt, Adam, and Mark and a whole crew of weather analyzing groundhogs test the crush-ability on two of our latest IPAs in a two beer episode. Dank Costanza Double IPA, using Strata, CTZ, and Amarillo hops, brings loud, in-your-face Grapefruit aromatics and flavor to the table. The CTZ gets hit with a Polar Vortex and a Money Vortex at the same time as Travis and Ryan plan out what they are going to do with the half-billion-dollar Mega Millions jackpot. Today Ryan came to the studio prepared with actual knowledge on the Space Force. Are Aliens real? You may find out.Follow us on Insta and Twitter @TheCTZPodcast
