In amazing fantasy and science fiction worlds -- Who's doing the work? Where does the food come from? The clothes? Who does the caregiving? Guest august clarke joins us to discuss the hands and bodies that create a society. Labor is something that's often sort of invisible in stories if it's not explicitly the driving focus of a book – So, why is that? How can authors better incorporate labor into their worlds? Labor intersects with so many other components of a world, after all: ideas about currency and property, concepts of time, religion, social class, technology. With labor touching so much of our characters' lives, where do we use SFF to examine & explore our world's labor issues, and where can we get creative and try to imagine escaping dominant paradigms? [Transcript TK] About Our Guest: august clarke is here and queer, etc. They have been published in PRISM international, Portland Review, and Eidolon. He was a 2019 Lambda Literary Fellow in Young Adult Fiction and a Locus Award, Dragon Award, and Pushcart nominee. They researched queerness, labor, and monstrosity at the University of Chicago. He is the author of the indie-bestselling series The Scapegracers, which he writes as H. A. Clarke.

The Nephite prophets were members of an esoteric lineage that wrote for an audience that they expected to possess eyes to see and ears to hear, and the intended way to understand the meaning of their writings is to read through the lens of our own temple experience. He embodied his early thoughts in this vein in a pair of short books, Plain and Precious Things and The Goodness and the Mysteries, both self-published under the pen name D. Up until now, I've wanted the seasons of this podcast to be evergreen and act as a resource on how to write a particular element of a story. My desire to create short evergreen episodes focused on a single topic is the reason this podcast tends to be free of interviews. However, throughout season three, I will share short interviews with other writers discussing how they write stories, and in particular, I will try to interview as many writers who "pants" novels. But these interview episodes will be treated as bonus episodes and will not be the focus of the podcast season. In light of that, in this bonus episode, I chat with Michaelbrent Collings on how he writes his fiction novels. Before we dive into the interview, here is a brief introduction to Michaebrent Collings.About Michaelbrent CollingsWhile he is best known for horror (and is one of the most successful indie horror authors in the world), Michaelbrent Collings has also written internationally-bestselling thriller, fantasy, science fiction, mystery, humour, young adult, and middle grade works, and romance. In addition to being a bestselling novelist, Michaelbrent has also received critical acclaim: he is the only person who has ever been a finalist for a Bram Stoker Award, a Dragon Award, and a RONE Award, and he and his work have been reviewed and/or featured on everything from Publishers Weekly to Scream Magazine to NPR. An engaging and entertaining speaker, he is also a frequent guest at comic cons and on writing podcasts like Six Figure Authors, The Creative Penn, Writing Excuses, and others. What to Expect From this EpisodeIn this episode, I chat with Michaelbrent about the following topics:Where Michaelbrent gets ideas for his books. How to know whether a horror novel is scar enough for the reader.Characters in horror movies that are too stupid to live.Transitioning from having that initial idea to getting to a place where you feel ready to write the first draft. How much detail Michaelbrent includes when he outlines his novels. The trick of becoming a professional author.Tips on how to tackle writer's block when you're writing the first draft. The trap most authors fall into when writing and measuring success.Dealing with negative reviews.Stores weighing low rating reviews over higher ratings.Writing is quite emotionally taxing. The value of a supportive partner or friends. Thanks for listening, and happy reading and writing, everybody.Podcasts, Books, and Tools MentionedCheck Out the Show NotesThe Previous EpisodeGenre Tropes Cheat SheetMichaelbrent Collings WebsiteMichaelbrent Collings Books on AmazonThe Authorpreneur Podcast Community on FacebookSupport the show by buying me a coffeeWant the podcast straight to your inbox? My ServicesTry The Formatting Wizard Book Formatting Services for FREE **The Formatting Templates offered by my services.Le Villain Book Covers (Affordable Premade Book Covers) **My Books Get My Short Story, the Lawn for FREEMy Novella, MissingThe Candidate (Pre-order)The Candidate (ARC on BookSprout)Become a Beta Reader and Start Reading DuplicityEntitled to Murder on my blogEntitled to Murder on WattpadConnect with Me on Social MediaTwitter: @WriterADHayFacebook: www.facebook.com/authorpreneurpodcastFB group: The Authorpreneur Podcast CommunityInstagram: @authorpreneurpodcastYouTube: www.youtube.com/c/authorpreneurpodcast/videosGoodreads: www.goodreads.com/authoradhay* This is an affiliate link where I receive a very small commission if you purchase this product.** This is a service offered by me

Be looking for the Animation of this episode to come out in the New Year 2022! We are so excited! Caryn Larrinaga is a Basque-American mystery and horror writer. She has been a Dragon Award finalist and won multiple awards for her work, including the League of Utah Writers Silver Quill (Donn's Hill, 2017) and the Cat Writers Association Certificate of Excellence (Donn's Legacy, 2020). In 2021, she was named Writer of the Year by the League of Utah Writers. Watching scary movies through split fingers terrified Caryn as a child, and those nightmares inspire her to write now. Her 90-year-old house has a colorful history, and the creaking walls and narrow hallways send her running (never walking) up the stairs. Exploring her fears through writing makes Caryn feel a little less foolish for wanting a buddy to accompany her into the tool shed. And check out his bestseller, SENTENCED TO WAR. https://www.amazon.com/Jonathan-P.-Brazee/e/B007E4W0GC #MilitarySciFi #JonathanBrazee From the author: I am a retired Marine infantry colonel and now a full-time writer living in Colorado Springs with my wife Kiwi and twin baby girls, Danika Dawn and Darika Marie. I am a two-time Nebula Award Finalist, a Dragon Award Finalist, and a USA Today Bestselling writer. I published my first work back in 1978, a so-so short story titled "Secession." Since then, I have been published in newspapers, magazines, and in book format in fiction, political science, business, military, sports, race relations, and personal relations fields. I returned to writing fiction in 2009, and I currently have over 75 titles published, 44 being novels. My novelette, "Weaponized Math," was a finalist for the 2017 Nebula Award, "Fire Ant" was a finalist for the 2018 Nebula Award for Best Novella, and "Integration" was a finalist for the 2018 Dragon Award for Best Military Science Fiction or Fantasy Novel. My undergraduate degree was earned at the U. S. Naval Academy (Class of 1979), and I have attended graduate school at U. S. International University and the University of California, San Diego, earning a masters and doctorate. I am a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the US. Naval Academy Alumni Association, and the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America where I'm serving as the chairman of SFWA Ed, our professional education program. I have rather eclectic tastes. I have won awards in photography, cooking, writing, and several sports, earning national championships in rugby and equestrian events. When I'm not writing, I'm reading, cooking, going to the gym, or traveling. I attend quite a few cons over the course of a year, and love meeting other people who love books. I write because I love it. I only hope that others might read my work and get a bit of enjoyment or useful information out of my efforts. This episode, Jon and Murph talk with Oscar Rios about his Kickstarter for a book focused on holidays in Lovecraft Country, and together they each recap highlights of their time at NecronomiCon 2019. This episode was recorded on September 12, 2019. Discord server invite link >> Campus Crier October 10th marks the 1 year anniversary of Chaosium’s Greg Stafford passing. And to honor him they are asking people to play a game in his memory in the month of October. To that effect, Chaosium will be releasing a free scenario for each of the main RPGs in their catalog on October 10th (CoC, Runequest, Pendragon, 7th Sea, and HeroQuest). Big updates were announced on Chaosium’s Central Asia game, Children of Fear. Lynne Hardy posted on the Chaosium website that “all the art, maps, and handouts are in progress, and the final stages of editing are almost finished.” She has also re-confirmed the mid-2020 release date. The post also includes sneak previews of the art that will be in the book, and it looks really, really good. Link in the show notes. The new addition of Masks of Nyarlathotep has won at DragonCon this year, bringing home a Dragon Award for Best Science Fiction or Fantasy Miniatures/Collectible Card/Role Playing Game. Congratulations to Chaosium! Chris Spivey took to Twitter on 2nd of September to announce that The Haunted West kickstarter will be going live in October. You might well remember that this is a Weird Western RPG that uses a new system developed in house at Darker Hue. And just like Harlem Unbound it “features people of color as protagonists… [highlighting] the people of color who are often overlooked in stories about the Old West.” https://twitter.com/darker_hue/status/1168529387681173506?s=12 Hypergraphia #2 is now available! This is a digital fanzine of dark horror gaming for multiple systems including Call of Cthulhu and Cthulhu Dark. This issue covers “the use of doorways, portals, and gates in your horror games. We bring you a plethora of NPCs, artifacts, and scenario seeds about entries, thresholds, and openings. Included is Goodcliffe, a short Cthulhu Dark scenario, wherein your players will plumb the depths of a depressingly dismal mine. Contributions from members of the Miskatonic University Podcast, Skype of Cthulhu, Weird Works, and Squamous Studios. The second issue of another Mythos fanzine, Bayt al Azif, has been released on DrivethruRPG. Within you will find: 3 adventures dual-statted for CoC 7 & GUMSHOE An overview of every Cthulhu Mythos RPG release of 2018A review of the history of Masks of NyarlathotepAn interview with Lynne HardyAnd much more! More news from Chaosium as they deal with the fallout of Critical Roll’s Shadow of the Crystal Palace’s detrimental impact on their North American supplier. They have announced that anyone ordering a physical product from them in the month of August will have a choice between a free PDF of Alone Against the Dark, or a $10 coupon if your order was over $20. The nice thing is that offer applies to anyone globally, even those unaffected by the North American shipper. Mysterious Creatures Field Guide by Eli Libson -- This is an amazing book of fantastic fantasy creatures with awesome painted illustrations of each creature. It feels like the Wayne Barlow book of alien creatures. This would be perfect to populate the Dreamlands with these creatures.  Topic This episode we speak with Oscar Rios about his latest KickStarter, The Lovecraft Country Holiday Collection. And we have a NecronomiCon 2019 Recap in a slightly different format from the ones of the past.

Having your book nominated for or winning an award is a wonderful opportunity for any author. While you might have high hopes of increased book sales following the accolade, those sales may not come quite so easily. In today’s episode, author Amy Murphy talks about her experience having her books nominated for the 2016 Dragon Award and how it affected her book sales, but more importantly, the other opportunities that came from earning the award. Applying for many awards is similar to applying for a scholarship in high school. It’s something the author has to be proactive about. Awards aren’t just handed out. It will benefit you to find awards in your genre and submit applications for them. But what should you do once you are nominated? Well, you can’t sit back and wait for your book to fly off the shelves. As we talked about in the previous episode Amy was a guest on, having an email list is important for situations such as this, when you want to get out the word of your success and any calls to action you may need from the people on your email list. Another thing Amy did was she changed her book covers to reflect her nomination (but not until finding out if she was indeed a nominee or a winner). Having that award listed on the cover, as well as in the author’s bio and book descriptions, may catch a reader’s eye. Most of the awards for books won’t necessarily help authors make long-term growth, but they may be able to help with networking and growing your reach as an author with other authors. When Amy was nominated for her award, she was able to gain access to email and Facebook groups to help her network with other authors and their email lists. One more benefit of being nominated for an award is the credibility that comes with it, which can help an author who may be looking for get into traditional publishing or trying to hook a literary agent. Bio of the Author in the Case Study: Amy J. Murphy is a sci-fi author and a finalist for the 2016 Dragon Award for Best Military Science Fiction or Fantasy Novel. This week we interview best selling urban fantasy author Shayne Silvers, who gives us the inside scoop on his writing processes, his beta reading team, and how he markets his popular Nate Temple series. (Spoiler warning: Shayne works really hard, set everything up to work as it should and has amazing blurbs. ie it's no wonder he's doing so well!) We loved hearing his story, because he had two books up and nothing much was happening, and it was only when he realised that he had to take his writing seriously, and start treating it like a real business instead of a part time hobby, that things started to change for Shayne. These days he's doing rather well, thank you very much. :)  NOTE: His book Beast Master (number 5 in the series) was also recently nominated for a Dragon Award, which is fantastic news for Indie authors everywhere (and also Shayne)! If you've read the book and loved it, be sure to head over to the Dragon Con website and vote for him!
