Early in my media career, I learned that having a good proofreader or editor was extremely important. It's a skill that some people don't possess. I always needed one to catch my small mistakes when I wrote something down. In recent years I've noticed that more online news sources have done away with that position. Today, even though we have tools like spell check and Grammarly, mistakes can still slide through. Read any article, and watch out for typos... In this week's episode, I speak with Martine Jellema, another traveler just starting out on her digital nomad journey and we're going to discuss how her early passion for gymnastics inspired a love for languages, which then eventually led her to be able to make a full-time income as a translator and proofreader on the road. Not only does Martine speak six different languages, but she also has a wide variety of interests including photography, architecture, and even taking her drone with her on the road to help with creating travel videos. During the interview, Martine and I discuss how she is adjusting to digital nomad life, what it's like to travel alone as a woman in the Middle East, and her favorite places to visit as someone with a passion for photography. I hope you enjoy my interview with Martine!
Set at the Proofreader at Downtown Marriot in Portland, Oregon Jon Heder and Dewey Halpaus jump right in to conversation with the possibility of Jon starting up his own podcast. “Everybody and their dog has one” he states. They discuss how movie trailer making is truly an art form, and how deceiving they can actually be. Dewey connects with Jon on the fact that he is LDS which is that is the way Dewey was brought up. That leads to the comparison of how strict their parents were, and if that had an effect on the type of TV and films they were exposed to in their youth. Jon shares that although he rarely consumed pop culture with his parents and had good judgement himself on what was appropriate, movies with a high sexual content still make him uncomfortable today. The two trade movie titles that they haven’t seen and question if watching certain iconic films of the 80’s would be the same seeing them for the first time today. Jon gave us insight to his creative spark and how that was fostered as a child through drawing and puppet shows with his twin brother. Once the two got older and had access to a video camera and sound mixer the fun really began. The subject of fame and privacy is something Jon is very passionate about and does not withhold his opinion. From family and friends, to strangers at restaurants his fame is something that can not be overlooked. He explains how he navigates it all and the type of mentality it takes. Christina Lantz had her daughter a little later in life at 38-years-old and really missed that part of her that did more than just "mother.” She took some time to complete the Proofread Anywhere course, but then shortly after realized that it wasn’t for her. She pivoted and used the specialist skills she had to really niche down and offered her services within the industry she knew best. This set her apart from other freelance writers, and Lantz now works only 8-9 hours per week earning between $1,700 and $1,900 per month. From her hard work, Lantz is privileged to spend the majority of her time with her daughter and call herself a freelance writer! This week, Mitch interviews Caitlin Pyle, a 30-year-old former freelance proofreader turned multimillion-dollar media-preneur. Caitlin turned a subject (proofreading) she was passionate about into a successful business. PLUS… she did it on her terms. As the founder of the ultra-niche, multi 7-figure blog called: Proofread Anywhere, Caitlin has been featured in Forbes, Fast Company and Business Insider. She talks with Mitch about her story and the steps she took to turn her passion into a 7-figure business. Listen To The Podcast: I love it when I meet people who surprise me. And… Caitlin Pyle is one of those people. Caitlin took her interest in proofreading and turned it into a blog. That's right… I said, proofreading! That blog became a 7-figure business. See what I mean???? SURPRISE! I don't know about you but when I first heard about someone with a blog for proofreaders, I thought to myself, “How could that possibly be a business?” But as I dug into Caitlin's story… she continued to surprise me! Surprise 1: She had some of the same doubts I did. She wondered, “How could I turn THIS into a business?” (Her family and friends wondered too.) Surprise 2: She experimented. Some things didn't work. Some things did. And the things that did work were a surprise too! Surprise 3: Caitlin has helped other people take their passion for various subjects (some mainstream… and many not-so-much) and turn them into profitable businesses. Surprise 4: Well… you'll have to listen to the interview to get THIS one. Plus, Caitlin offers some free resources that will help you to think through your next steps. HERE'S THE LINK TO GET THE PDF! Grab this free (and awesome) resource… especially if you've ever had a passion for something and wondered, “Could I turn this into a business?” I think you'll dig it. And hey… whether you've ever thought about turning an idea into a business or not… I think you'll be inspired by Caitlin's story and her approach to life. Listen in and then leave a comment. Let me know what stood out to you. Can't wait to hear from you. Mitch
Michael Hanrahan owns a publishing company in Melbourne Australia, Michael Hanrahan Publishing, and is the author of Stand Out, 7 steps to self-publishing a book that will build your profile, promote your business and make you stand out from the crowd. Today we discussed: Why the lines between traditional publishing and self-publishing have become blurred. Self-published books use to have poorly designed covers, sub-standard layout and poor print quality. They looked cheap, but not anymore. Technology has changed the publishing world. Everything runs on a digital workflow and it’s now more viable to do short, high-quality print runs. Printing 200 copies is now quite common. It now only takes three months from a written word document to finished book. What is an ISBN and why is it important? ISBN stands for International Standard Book Number and you need to get this right. Every book and eBook has an individual ISBN number and some self-publishers make the mistake of trying to use the same ISBN number for different book formats. Why should someone write a book and self-publish it? Imagine your book like a huge business card. It opens doors. Writing a book can lead to speaking gigs and television appearances, and it’s a great way of reconnecting with past clients. It’s also a great way to make contact with new business contacts by sending them a copy of your book. Why a book gives you street cred: There are a lot of people writing blogs, but there a far fewer people writing books., because it takes dedication to put together 30,000 to 50,000 words, and it also shows commitment. Simple facts: You become a better writer by writing. Writing a book will make you more intelligent, due to research. It’s a guarantee that someone is going to hate your book…just accept it. 7 Steps To Self-Publishing Planning: This is not the writing process; this is about scheduling and budgeting your book with your publisher. Editing: It’s more than just checking spelling. It’s about creating a better book. Your editor will offer suggestions and improvements and it’s a great time for the author to ask questions. One of the big advantages of self-publishing is you’re the boss, so you do get the final say in the editing process. Design: Design includes the front and back cover, the spine, the internal layout and paper selection. There are usually three to four rounds during the design process and multiple suggestions each time, so you may see up to 20 variations. This is why you should judge a book by its cover. A cover says a lot about the book and the time taken in the design process. Proofreading and indexing: Editing is about improving the overall quality of the book. The Proofreader is a whole new person who has never seen your book and they are simply looking for mistakes (spelling, comma’s etc). They don’t offer writing advice. As a professional editor, Jennifer Harshman has a purpose to come alongside you, the author, & walk you through the process, whether you’re at the very beginning & have never written anything in your life, or whether you’ve already published books but are struggling with your new one. While she’ll help you with the technical aspects of writing & self-publishing, her biggest strength is helping you with the emotional aspects. The roller-coaster ride’s easier when there's help. Perhaps, that’s why her son, Joel Michael, has become an author. Can’t wait to learn more about him in the interview. Here's a brief excerpt from his book, DiamondMoon: A MINECRAFT World?: Imagine waking up in a strange world alone, confused, & afraid. That's what happened to Steve one day. After he dodges Zombies & gets in a lot of trouble, he meets a friend & has strange adventures. What happens? Will he survive? What is the source of the strange lights that appear at odd times? You can only find out under the light of the Diamond Moon. Jennifer’s journey through an abusive childhood & now with chronic illnesses has taught me about integrity, honesty, & the value of hard work. These are qualities she’s instilled into my own family. They’re also what you’ll find at the core of everything she does at Harshman Services, to your benefit.
