People with dementia are uniquely qualified to discuss the challenges of their condition and the features of effective support, but their voices are all too often drowned out in research and debates about policy. According to People with Dementia at the Heart of Research: Co-Producing Research through The Dementia Enquirers Model (Jessica Kingsley Publishers, 2024) by Rachael Litherland & Philly Hare, it's time for that to change. Dementia Enquirers is an ambitious and novel programme of work which has tested out what it means for people with dementia to lead research and has developed a new 'driving seat' approach to co-research. This ground-breaking book features 26 research projects led by groups of people with dementia, supported by group facilitators and academics, to make their voices heard. Topics include giving up driving, GP dementia reviews, living alone with dementia, and using AI platforms such as smart speakers. The book also describes how people with dementia shaped the entire programme, and addressed head-on issues such as ethics approval processes and complex research language. The book is a key read for anyone involved in dementia support, this research brings the voices of people with dementia to the fore to explore their experiences of researching the condition. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. SAGE Palliative Medicine & Chronic Care
Development of the TIFFIN recommendations for co-producing palliative and end-of-life care research with individuals with lived experience of homelessness: A qualitative study

This episode features Jodie Crooks (Marie Curie, London, UK) and Dr Briony Hudson (Marie Curie, London, UK; Marie Curie Palliative Care Research Department, University College London, London, UK).   What is already known about the topic? Research into palliative care for people experiencing homelessness is complex and requires input from people with lived experience. There is a dearth of evidence and/or guidance in how to support researchers to involve people with lived experience of homelessness in palliative care research.   What this paper adds? Co-production of palliative and end-of-life-care research with people with lived experience of homelessness needs to be transparent, prioritise building rapport, be trauma-informed and person-centred. Reimbursement should always be offered to co-producers. The method of reimbursement should consider the context of involvement (i.e. the individual's circumstances) where possible. There is a need to evidence the impact of involvement, to facilitate a change in research culture which prioritises hearing the voices of different groups.   Implications for practice, theory, or policy Involving people with lived experience of homelessness can help researchers to identify unknown unknowns within the field of palliative care: it can validate, enhance and direct research to the intricacies of their experiences. The TIFFIN recommendations provide guidance for how to achieve co-production within this field in a trauma informed way.   Full paper available from:     https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/02692163241259667   If you would like to record a podcast about your published (or accepted) Palliative Medicine paper, please contact Dr Amara Nwosu:  a.nwosu@lancaster.ac.uk

Michaell Magrutsche co-produced with Robert Evans (Godfather, Chinatown Love Story) and was also the City Arts Commissioner of Newport Beach, California, he also wrote 5 books.  He has been a leader all his life and is now writing the book on the next form of leadership because he can function with humans better than in systems.  Michaell has given 120 interviews worldwide  in the last 8 months primarily about system values versus human values, leadership's most trait self-awareness, our superpower of creativity, dialogue and adaptability. The next disruption that we already are into, we have created too good, and too much, that we pivoted to not having the time to find those products, let alone engage in a sales funnel and buy the product or service. We need leaders that understand this and not push more, but be aware and wiser. Art/creativity is an integral part to reveal to you, who you are, rather than waiting for others to define you. Art/creativity as a human superpower. Art always reminds us of a life as human BEINGS.     Michaell is more aware of this because he was a sick child and also is dyslexic, and having dysgraphia (hand eye coordination)  could not fit in anywhere. He is completely self-taught. Now, 5 books later…Creating art is his savior, it allowed him to be with other humans, he has co produced with Robert Evans, and became the City Arts Commissioner for Newport Beach CA, etc. etc. Art/creativity, healthy dialogue (podcasts) and our adaptability are superpowers that define our limitless human potential. Creating art always reminds and teaches us of a life as human BEINGS. It makes us aware of human and nature's wonders for us and future generations.   Michaell's hub is  https://MICHAELLM.com. For most people, that's enough bragging rights to last a lifetime, yet it's just a small part of Ken's legendary career. On his first day as an engineer at EMI's Abbey Road Studios, he was enlisted to assist a little band called the Beatles. (No pressure, right?). The list of names he's worked with reads like a roll call for the Rock ‘n' Roll Hall of Fame: Elton John, Lou Reed, Jeff Beck, Harry Nilsson, Supertramp, Devo, Duran Duran, Procol Harum — and, of course, Bowie. His 2012 memoir, Abbey Road to Ziggy Stardust, provides illuminating insights on how these classics came together in the studio. Marriage is one of the most incredible and fulfilling journeys in life. A man who “findeth a wife findeth a good thing,” indeed! When you’re with the one you love and are committed to nurturing and growing your relationship, realizing that you’re two separate people who’ve come together as one to do this thing called LIFE, beautiful things happen. Marriage is also one of the most complex, humbling and heart wrenching experiences you will ever know…EVER. It often looks sooo good from the outside, doesn’t it? We see a couple out and about, looking so good together…looking like they have not a care in the world, and we assume that what we see is ALL there is…blessed and wedded BLISS (insert “awwww” emoji here). The question we all have to answer sooner or later is, “What does it take to truly make a marriage good from the INSIDE out?” We, personally have been through experiences that have cultivated our knowledge and greatly enriched our understanding of what it takes to maintain a healthy marriage. Co-Producing our first Marriage Symposium a couple years ago in New York opened our eyes and our hearts to the patterns and truths that are very common in Marriage, but rarely spoken about openly. We’ll offer a window into our lives as we bring you helpful tips and invaluable tools from experts in the field. We’ll discuss some of the struggles we’ve personally overcome, and be transparent about some of the challenges we’re still trying to master, as we share many of the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Please do review us on iTunes or whatever podcast platform you listen on. If you give us a five star rating we might just shout you out on one of our future episodes! And if this particular episode resonated with you, take a screenshot and share it on IG or FB and tag us @thismarriagething or #thismarriagething. Date: March 24, 2016 Featuring: Maren Batalden, MD, MPH, Associate Chief Quality Officer and Associate Director of Graduate Medical Education for Quality and Safety, Cambridge Health Alliance Kathy Sabadosa, MPH, Senior Research Director, Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice Sarah Myers, MPH, RN, Executive Improvement Director, ImproveCareNow, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center Julie Bass, DO, Medical Director, Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease Program, Children’s Mercy Hospital (Kansas City, MO) Jamie Hicks, RN, Lead Parent of Patient & Family Advisory Council, Children’s Mercy Hospital IBD Program Christina Gunther-Murphy, Executive Director, Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) When we say patients and clinicians should be “co-producing health and health care,” do we really mean it? Dr. Maren Batalden from the Cambridge Health Alliance certainly hopes so. In fact, in her recent article on the subject, she and her co-authors assert that a form of co-production already exists in health care today — in the natural give-and-take between patients and providers around treatment and care decisions; and in the assets that patients and practitioners each bring to the table. But we have yet to realize the full promise of co-production — the opportunity to optimize this “collaboration” to achieve much better health and health outcomes. In other words, when patients and providers consciously work together, toward common goals, all kinds of possibilities open up.   Co-production does require a paradigm shift and for medical staff, letting go of seeing themselves as the sole engines and creators of the “product” known as health care. In fact, Dr. Batalden and her co-authors argue, health care isn’t a product at all, but a service which both “sides” engage in and have an opportunity to shape. At its most basic level co-production is an exciting new way to frame mutually respectful, helpful relationships, including among clinical staff.
