Boxing is famous for many reasons. For its toughness, harshness that borders on cruelty at times. But it also gives anybody willing to dedicate, commit and submit themselves to learning at all costs. To breaking their body and mind over and over again in the chase of becoming the best.  Maureen Shea epitomises all that. She fought battles outside the ring just to be able to do all of the above. She suffered in ways that not many recover from  and she joins us on this episode to tell it all,With a record of 29-2 (13KO), Maureen was born and raised in the Bronx, New York to an Irish father, ( NYPD detective and Mexican Mum.As a pro she first trained with Luigi Olcese, she was eventually brought to Gleasons to train with well respected trainer Hector Roca and went on to hold the WBC interim female featherweight title,  the IFBA super bantamweight title and challenged once for the WBA female super featherweight title in 2009 shes also won the NABA Featherweight title and IFBA Junior Featherweight title. Maureen is currently ranked number 2 by the WBA.

The Irish have survived famine, oppression, discrimination and agricultural nightmares yet in today's modern days, the Irish resiliency still shines through despite the ongoing pandemic, shutdowns and social distancing. But where there's a will, there's a way and the Irish still celebrate their patron saint, Maewyn Succat, that's right St. Patrick with virtual St. Patrick's Day celebrations throughout the city, the dying of the Chicago River and maybe hoisting a pint or two in the kitchen. So, push away the couch, roll up the rug, kick off your shoes and celebrate St. Paddy's Day the Irish way! Today on Windy City Irish Radio, it's all about the celebration with music from The Elders, Enya, Stocktons Wing, Mary Black, Carlos Núñez, JigJam, Damien Dempsey, Drops of Green, The Gleasons, Bing Crosby, and The Wolfe Tones. It's all right here on Windy City Irish Radio live each Sunday afternoon from 12noon to 1pm on 750AM WNDZ or catch the podcast right here at www.windycityirishradio.com.

And your podcast is my immediate go to! Thank you for sharing such lovely music, I’m loving Celtic music more and more as it feels so at home to me (I have Celtic roots on my mother’s side). I recently found here in Old Town Alexandria VA a LEGIT Irish pub called O’Connells and it’s my favorite go to spot for live traditional Irish music. They play in this little nook up front where there are thankfully no distracting TVs. The space in sum is large, 5 rooms, two floors. But the one up front when you first enter is where the live music is. It’s small, cozy, warm, intimate. A real Irishman working the bar! My friend and I went one evening without knowing there would be live music and there were only two people at the bar, her and I, and some lovely Irish musicians. It’s as if the place was reserved for just her and I. Such a beautiful time her and I shared in silence and in aw of the sounds and energy coming from the little nook! I will definitelyyy be going back there for some lunch and Celtic Music feels an in the mean time I’ll be into this podcast regularly- also just downloaded the app (: Thank you, thank you! Brilliant. I hope you enjoy the app too. It definitely makes it easier to listen.

Born a flouting believer in Christianity, a young Maewyn Succat was captured by pirates and sold into slavery at a tender age of 16 where he tended to sheep. During that time of captivity, Maewyn strengthened his relationship with God through prayer; eventually leading to his conversion to Christianity. A few years after escaping captivity, young Maewyn, in a vision, was harkened “We appeal to you, holy servant boy, to come and walk among us” and walk among them, he did. Roaming the countryside he taught the message of Christianity through his analogical shamrock teachings and his legendary expulsion of ophidian creatures. Shedding the Succat name, he became the first successful evangelist of Christianity; The Apostle of Ireland, St. Patrick, and he is once again celebrated by virtue of devotion, tradition, and legend with music, dance, song and a celebratory pint or two. Join Tim Taylor and Mike Shevlin for an extended evening celebrating the first Bishop of Armagh with stories about the life of times of our greatest saint, St. Patrick, with music from Barleyjuice, The Gleasons, The Tossers, Brave Combo, Sharon Shannon with Greg Guy, The High Kings, The Chancey Brothers, Ron Kavana, Girsa, The Great Whiskey Project, The Prodigals, Trian, Katie Grennan, Eileen Ivers, Andy Cooney and the Wolftones.
