Podcast Episode #181Keep expectations low, then shine.Join us on YouTube here - Our expectations play a profound role in our daily contentment.In the book Engineering Happiness, it is discovered that the fundamental equation of wellbeing: happiness equals reality minus expectations. I'm sure you've all heard this notion before.If you expect more from life than you currently have, you'll be unhappy.Conversely, if your current experience exceeds your expectations, you'll be happy.It's a blessing that you expect nothing because it means that you have no attachment to the output and you can dedicate your full-attention to the input.When we're too invested in the outcome and we fall short of achieving it, it's disappointing. That's a universal response. But that's not to say we can't celebrate the wins of life! Of course we can, and we should! But the focus here is we cannot expect them because that will affect the way we go about doing things.Now I must say, I'm not suggesting you don't have any expectations for anything. I believe there are certain standards you must uphold for yourself and those around you to create your best environment, but I share this perspective because it might help you interrupt the pattern and give you a new way of thinking about your relationship with generating results.Turns out, low expectations are a key to happiness.There is a place for everything, in moderation. Expectations aren't a bad thing in my view, I think they bring order to our world and keep us from living in our heads.What are your thoughts about expectations? Are yours too high or low? Or are you letting go of expectations altogether?Take Action:This week, reset an expectation: what is a more realistic and joyful goal? Then, refocus on the journey rather than the destination. What mountain can you climb that you will truly enjoy climbing, whether or not you ever make it to the top? Episode # 162 Be Your Own Best Friend Why would you want to become your own best friend?  There are a number of benefits to creating your own internal support system rather than relying on your partner, friends or family to be there for you when you're suffering. Having expectations of other people can lead to disappointment, heartbreak, and relationship breakdown if your expectations aren't met. We all have it in us to give ourselves what we need, without seeking it externally. Of course, it's great if you have a strong support network, but you could still benefit from becoming more self-reliant. And what about if you have no one to turn to for help, or if your current support people are unable to be there for you? Isn't it far better to know how to support yourself in times of need? Here's how to become your own best friend. 1. Be nice to yourself The first step to becoming a friend to yourself is to treat yourself like you would treat a friend. That means that you need to stop being self-critical and beating yourself up. Start by acknowledging your good qualities, talents, and abilities, and begin to appreciate your own unique self. When you catch yourself thinking up some nasty self-talk, stop and ask, “Would I say this to my best friend?” If not, then reframe your self-talk to be more supportive and caring. 2. Imagine how you would support a friend in the same situation Think about a loved one, a friend, a family member, or someone dear to you, and imagine that they are in the same situation you are currently facing. Think about how they're struggling, suffering, and feeling stuck with this problem, then consider how to best offer assistance and advice to them. Craft the words that you would say to your greatest friend and then say them gently to yourself. Allow yourself to feel supported, and give yourself what you need. 3. Honor your needs Following the theme of considering how you would help a dear friend, you need to start taking your own advice and putting your own needs first. Do you need a day off from work? A long hot bath? An early night? A wild night? Some time to catch up on your reading, cleaning, gardening, creative projects, social life or self-care? Whatever it is that you need, allow yourself to put it at the top of the list rather than the bottom. Be there for yourself and make it happen. 4. Stand back from your thoughts Just because a thought pops into your mind, you don't need to believe it and act upon it. Not all thoughts should be believed. If you're struggling with negative thoughts like “I'm not good enough” or “I can't cope with this” remember that it's your choice whether or not you believe those thoughts. “Standing back” from thoughts is a mindfulness technique whereby you imagine that your conscious awareness has taken a step backward, out of your mind. That way you can simply observe the thoughts that pass through, without needing to engage with them. Use it whenever you're dealing with unhelpful thoughts. 5. Send compassion to the part of you that is hurting Being a friend to yourself involves adopting and mastering the art of self-compassion. Compassion isn't forceful or solution-focused. Compassion is accepting, peaceful, and loving, without the need to control or change anything. I am so happy, grateful, and thankful that I have become my own best friend. It's a game-changer. Most of us aren't but we find ourselves in a constant loop of worrying about this, fretting about that, even when it has nothing to do with us.Getting someplace outside of your norm magically wipes most of our daily stress away. What you'll eat next in your new spot.FRESH AIR IN A CLEANER ENVIRONMENTHave you ever noticed that you tend to be happier and more peaceful when you escape to the beach, countryside, desert, or mountains? Do you know a big reason why this is?Clean air! Especially for those of you who live in a city, did you know that the air outside of the city is generally cleaner? There are fewer people, cars, and factories outside of the major metropolis areas of the world.When was the last time you exhaled all you could, and then took a really deep breath? When you fill your lungs to capacity? You know, the kind of deep breath that makes you smile as you exhale and sigh. Was it in the city, or up a mountain? At the beach? Along a back road in the countryside?IMPROVEMENT OF FOCUS AND PRODUCTIVITYResearch at the University of Illinois concluded that people who take short mental breaks, such as a weekend getaway, leads to having a more stress-free attitude, improved focus in productivity over time, and have health benefits, such as lower blood pressure and lower stress hormones.Think about it this way: When you use an electronic device for an extended period of time, what happens? The battery gets lower and lower until the device goes into low-power mode, eventually shutting down if not properly recharged. Our bodies and minds work the same way.I propose that deactivating and reactivating your goals allows you to stay focused. It is best to impose brief breaks on yourself. Brief mental breaks will actually help you stay focused on your task.MULTIPLE MODES OF CHEAPER TRANSPORTATIONDepending on your location and destination, driving your vehicle might be a cheaper option than purchasing an expensive plane ticket. Especially if you have a vehicle that is amazing on mileage, you have a wider radius of options for a single tank of gas.If you don't have a vehicle, look into taking a shuttle or regional bus. Is there a train route that runs close by? Not only would you be able to experience an alternate mode of transportation, but half of the joy is in the journey itself!ROAD TRIPS Road trips are amazing. I think they're one of the best ways to vacation, if I'm being completely honest. Who doesn't love cruising down the highway, windows down, radio playing your favorite song as you belt out the lyrics?One of the benefits of weekend getaways is the ability to go on a road trip with your friends. Not only is it super convenient to have all of your items with you, but once you deplane, your vacation begins!TIME BENEFITS OF WEEKEND GETAWAYSYOU PRIORITIZE YOUR ACTIVITIESSince you're on a strict time limit during a weekend getaway, you'd be surprised how efficiently you organize your activities and adventures. You will find yourself only doing activities that are highest on your bucket list and almost guaranteed to be the best the location has to offer you. By packing as many activities as you can into your schedule, your weekend getaway can seem longer in a good way.And if your goal for your weekend getaway is to relax and recharge, you'll probably maximize the amount of time you spend relaxing before getting jerked back into reality!NO PTO NEEDEDFor those of you working stiffs like me, paid time off (PTO) is a precious commodity. It simply and beautifully illuminates the power of our thoughts and our words to create our destiny. Wow. No small statement there. You'd think given that realization, we might be a bit more mindful of what comes our of our mouths or spills onto the page. And yet, very few of us make ourselves accountable at the level of our thoughts and our words.Watch Your WordsAre we monitoring them? Are we aware of the message they may send out and what we may bring back in as a result?What we think about we bring about.Words are so powerful and reflect our thoughts. Here are 8 words commonly used in our everyday conversations with ourselves and others that we need to monitor and change in order to bring about the future we really desire.The heart of the problem is making that connection between what we think and say and what eventually shows up in our lives. The gap between those initial thoughts and a specific outcome can seem vast and unrelated, lulling us into a state of complacency and laziness, and leaving us unprepared for what's to come. Better to begin right now assuming that EVERYTHING we think has an impact — no exceptions — than to continue to randomly throw ideas and words around that may come back to bite us.Given that we have millions of thoughts a day, the idea of becoming accountable for them is rather daunting, to say the least. Obviously, anyone who has ever tried to meditate knows that we cannot stop our thoughts. At best, we can watch them, the way one would watch a ticker tape at the bottom of a television screen. We can also choose which ones to pay attention to and invest in. That is where their potential to impact our lives begins. You feed and nurture and give life to a thought by paying attention to it. You starve it by ignoring it. Your accountability starts when you make the decision to feed or starve a thought. Once you invest in it and then communicate about it, you've given it life — that is when is moves from a random stream flowing through you into the arena of creation. That is where the potential to do good or harm begins.Once you know this, there is no turning back. You are not responsible for the thoughts that exist in your being; you are responsible for what you do with them. The origins of your destiny are found right here. To restate it simply: your life is about what you put your attention on. At all times, in all circumstances, we have a choice about how to shape our destiny.So watch your thoughts. Choose carefully. And if something slips by, by all means, watch your words.Here are 8 "little" words, that will be a BIG difference 1.Try“I'll try to get it finished by…” “I'll try to catch up with you on Saturday”Whenever I hear someone saying this, or even myself, then I know that they are not serious and it is not going to happen.Try is a wishy-washy word that is devoid of commitment, leaving wide open space for excuses to creep in and get in your way. No one created the life of their dreams and positive results by trying. They got theirs by doing and making it happen.Make a clearer commitment instead by saying “I'll have it done by…” “I am free at this time and I can meet you then…” or if need be, “I can't promise anything but I will do my best to ….”|2. WishWishing is sitting on your couch daydreaming, waiting for your lotto ball to drop or the fairy godmother to appear. Wish removes yourself from the equation and tells you that you have to rely on the powers that be.Change wish to “I will…” “I am…” I'm determined….” “I deserve…” “I desire”3. I amBe very careful how you use the term “I am” to define who you are. You are not angry; you are not depressed, you are not happy. All of these things are temporary emotions that come and go. If you define yourself as being this way then that identity can have a tendency to stick and what will follow will be excuses such as “I can't do this because I am depressed” and “There is nothing I can do about it, this is who I am.”A better way to say it is “I feel angry. I feel depressed”This lets you know that it is a temporary feeling that could quite easily change.4. IfHow many times do you mutter, “If I get that promotion then…” “If the money arrives then…”“If” always presents the element of doubt. Doubt and insecurity don't bring you what you want, certainty and confidence does. So instead of “if”, simply make it “when”“When I get that new job…. “When signals that you are serious and committed and you believe that what you deserve is on its way to you.5. ShouldAgain a wishy-washy promise word. “I should call my mother more.” “I should go to the gym tonight.” Should is rife with feelings of guilt and complacency.You know you are never going to do it and by somehow saying that you recognize you should make you feel better. It doesn't really; the only thing that makes you feel better is doing it.Should can be turned in to “I will…” or “I am going to…”6. I can'tThis is one of those words that can be debated. We've all heard there is no such thing as can't. Well, there is really, I can't sing. I really can't. I'm dreadful. But you know what, I can try or I can learn.As soon as your brain hears you say the word can't, it goes on a holiday. It shuts down and celebrates because it no longer has to find a way to do it. “I can try” means that you open up a creative space for learning and exploring that may just bring you new ways of thinking and doing.When my daughter says “Mummy, I can't,” my response is, “Maybe, but you can always try first and see. Let's have a go!”7. DesperateWhen we really want something there is a tendency to attach the word desperate to it, as if this word will hold some power to bring it to us faster.“I am desperate for him to call me” “I am in desperate need of a transfer.” Desperation breeds more things to be desperate about. It is not an attractive word.Instead, say “I am so excited that he is going to be calling me tonight. “I really desire a transfer and am ready to go!”8. LuckUgh. This is my least favourite word. If you always for other people's success off as luck, you are doing two really bad things1) Not recognizing and appreciating all the hard work they have put into bringing about the life they desireBut more importantly2) You are saying that it is not possible for you. So you give up before you even start creating the life you want. You think it will only happen to you if a genie appears. This is such a lie. Listen in as I go live on my FB community "Celebrate Everything"Focus on what you want, not on what you lack!"It is during our darkest moments that we must focus to see the light." Aristotle OnassisThe number one reason why people are not getting what they want is because they don't even know what they want. The number two reason is that while they are telling themselves what they wash they are concentrating on what they don't want, and what you are concentrating on... Expands!Remember to focus on what ver want from now on. Where is your focus? On the positive of the negative? On the past or he present? Do you focus on problems or solutions? This is crucial! Here is where the law of attraction goes wrong for most people and they give up! They say “.I am attracting money.”, “I am prosperous, but at the same time, they focus most of their time on the bills they have to pay, on the money that goes out, on the fact that they are no earning that much. So what happens? They attract more of the things they don't want. You have so many gifts in your life. It's time to focus on what you have, maximize these gifts, and allow them to help you bloom into your full potential. We so often get caught in the lack game, focusing on what we think we don't have.This blinds us from noticing all the abundance in our life and keeps us from tapping into this abundance. Every day we must develop the reflex to connect to those gifts, be grateful for them, and be proud of where we are at.Look in the mirror and tell yourself “I am amazing.” Feels awkward? Even more of a reason more to do it every damn day until it feels comfortable because you actually believe it.You will attract more of what you focus on your energy will flow in the direction of your focus and your focus determines your overall perception of the world. Focus on opportunities and you'll see more opportunities. Failure allows us to innovateAs the phrase goes, we can't keep doing the same thing and expect the same results. Innovation is critical to learning. The fear of failure is the number one dream killer, but why?Why are we so afraid of failure? Why can't we see it like Napoleon Hill who indicated that "Every adversity, every failure, every heartache carries with it the seed of an equal or greater benefit." Or in other words, how would our life change if we could see failure exactly like Napoleon Hill did? Why not see it as a learning experience that is necessary for growth and which provides us with information and motivation? What would happen if you could fully embrace the idea that in reality failure is a sign that points towards progress?As the phrase goes, we can't keep doing the same thing and expect the same results. Innovation is critical to learning. But in order to innovate, we need to know what went wrong."I failed myself to success"Thomas Alva Edison"It is hard to fail, but it is worse never to have tried to succeed."Theodore RooseveltWith the "Edison Mentality". Edison himself said things like "I failed myself to success" or "I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." This is what enabled him to bring many of his inventions to us. The man just didn't give up!Accept your mistakes as feedback and learn from them!Luckily, as kids, we didn't have the mentality that many of us have adapted as adults - because if we did then many of us wouldn't know how to walk! How did you learn walking? By falling many times and always getting up again.Unfortunately, somewhere along the road, you picked up the idea that failure is something terrible. And as a result of this, we fail once and then stop doing things simply because it didn't work out the first time because we got rejected, and because our business venture didn't work out right away.NOW is the time to change your mentality towards failure!Why don't you look at it in this way from now on:Every failure is a great moment in our life because it allows us to learn and grow from it!Even more and more companies nowadays are shifting to a new mentality by allowing their employees to make mistakes, because they noticed that if people are afraid to make mistakes, creativity and innovation die and the company's progress slows down. At the end of the day, it comes down to this:Success is the result of right decisions. Accepting Expansion in Your LifeIt's safe to say that we've all experienced some form of expansion in our lives. But what does it mean to accept expansion? How do we know if we've accepted expansion?In this episode, we'll explore what it means to accept expansion.When you expand, the field of possibilities expands with you. Speak your truth. Whatever there is to say, say it. State your desires out loud. Communicate your feelings. Tell your story. When you hold your truth within you, your authentic self collapses.Open your heart, literally and figuratively. Roll your shoulders back and down. Inhale & exhale, focusing your attention towards the center of your chest. Let yourself feel desire, let yourself feel love. let yourself be vulnerable. When you close your heart, you disconnect from Life itself.Play. Dream. Imagine. Spend time doing nothing. Spend time creating for the sake of creating and not for production. Let your mind wonder.Take one small step forward, and another after that. Slow motion is still movement.Breathe. What is Expansion?The process of expanding isn't always easy, but it's so worth it. Every time we expand our consciousness, we move closer to our truest selves. We become more authentic and more connected to the world around us. We start living with purpose and meaning, and our lives become richer and fuller as a result.Expansion is the process of accepting new beliefs, ideas, and ways of being in your life. It's about opening yourself up to new possibilities and experiences. It can be scary at times, but ultimately it leads to growth and healing.Why is Acceptance Important? The ability to accept change is an important part of spiritual growth. If we're not open to change, we get stuck in our old patterns and ways of thinking. This can prevent us from moving forward in our lives and achieving our goals. Additionally, when we're resistant to change, it causes us to suffer more than we need to. By opening ourselves up to new possibilities, we allow for more joy and happiness in our lives. How Can I Expand My Consciousness? To expand, we must first be willing to release what is no longer serving us. This can be a difficult process because it requires us to let go of familiar things, even if they're not good for us. However, it's important to remember that holding on to these things is only holding us back from achieving our full potential.Once we've let go of the old, we can begin to open ourselves up to new possibilities. This is where expansion comes in. Expansion is about increasing our awareness so that we can see beyond our current circumstances. It's about opening our hearts and minds to new ways of thinking and being. When we do this, we open ourselves up to limitless possibilities.There are many ways to expand your consciousness and open yourself up to new experiences. Some things you can do include: Practicing meditation or mindfulness, Studying different spiritual traditions,Attending workshops or retreats,Exploring different forms of therapy, Keeping a journal, Spending time in nature, andConnecting with like-minded people. When we take the time to reflect on our thoughts and feelings, we can start to see expansion as something positive instead of something to be afraid of. We can also use meditation to focus on the present moment and let go of any fears or worries about the future. Spending time in nature can remind us of the beauty and wonder of the world around us, helping us to feel more connected and at peace. So if you're feeling hesitant about expansion, try incorporating some calming activities into your life. I know exactly what my comfort zone feels like. We all have one. Most of us spend too much time hanging out there. I find the edge of my comfort zone when I'm working out. That first moment of “Woah, this is getting hard. It's starting to feel uncomfortable. I wanna quit. I don't want to work that hard.” Or that moment when someone offers me a homemade cookie or I drive past my favorite donut place. That feeling of “It's just this once. I'll be better tomorrow”. Riiiiiiiight there on the edge of my comfort zone. It is uncomfortable to push through the workout. It is uncomfortable to say “no” to my favorite things.It's not comfortable to push beyond the limits. It's not comfortable to say “yes” when your body is saying “no”. It's not comfortable to say “no” when your cravings are saying “yes”. But you know what? I had to get really honest with myself and embrace the fact that if I did what I've always done, I'd get what I've always got.If I kept saying “I'll start tomorrow” to excuse today's indulgence.If I kept quitting or throwing in the towel at the start of a workout.If I kept making excuses to have another treat “just this once”.I knew what those things got me. Living right there, smack in the center of my comfort zone, I was fat. I had no energy. I had no confidence. I had no passion. I had no hope.Don't get me wrong. Your comfort zone has an important role. It keeps you safe. It helps you avoid risk and danger. It provides mental, emotional & physical security.But at some point it limits you. Severely. It keeps you right where you are and prevents your growth & achievement.Consider this: are you living your fullest life right now? Is this life, this body, this career, this relationship all that you want it to be? For me, the answer was no. To get the life I wanted I had to leave my comfort zone. The security of my comfort zone was limiting my life and holding me back from reaching my potential.I didn't want to limit myself to the handful of things I could have within the confines of my comfort zone. So I stepped beyond it. But here's the thing: by definition, leaving your comfort zone is uncomfortable. It doesn't always feel good. But if you want the reward, if you want the joy, if want the improvements then you have to get uncomfortable. The more frequently you break those boundaries the easier it becomes. The more progress you make, the easier it becomes. It will be hard at first.When you wake up in the morning and want to grab that bagel or fast food remind yourself: that is my comfort zone. I am breaking free. I am claiming bigger things.When your day gets crazy and you're craving candy in the middle of the afternoon remind yourself: that is my comfort zone. I don't want that life. I am creating new boundaries.When you get home and feel tempted to order pizza instead of taking a few minutes to assemble a healthy meal remind yourself: that is my comfort zone. I've spent enough time there. I want something more.When you are ready to quit when your workout gets hard remind yourself: that is my comfort zone. I can't grow in there. I can't become the person I want to be if I don't move beyond those walls.When you go out to dinner and consider going all out and “starting tomorrow” remind yourself: that is my comfort zone. I've had that before. I know how that ends. I know that's not effective. I want more.When you want to sit on the couch and watch TV instead of getting your meals together for work tomorrow remind yourself: that is my comfort zone. I'm not happy there. I deserve happiness.It's not always easy but it gets easier with time and practice.Remember this quote from Atlas Shrugged. “The world you desire can be won. It exists. It is possible. It is yours.”But also remember this from me: It exists outside your comfort zone.PUSHING THE LIMITS is Key to Finding YourselfWhen is the last time you pushed past your fears?Do you remember the joy of accomplishing something for the first time, something you believed you could never do?The truth is, you have succeeded on thousands of “first” times. The first time you took a step, rode a bike, went out on a date, tried out for that team, drove a car.Those don't seem like events that had you push past your fears now because at the time, they were exciting!You couldn't wait to get on that bike and show everyone that you could do it without training wheels, and you were so into that boy in high school that you would have done just about anything to go out on a date with him.And the car….well, how cool were you!So what happened?As we became adults, that excitement to try new things and push past our limits turned into fear.Fear that we couldn't possibly do THAT.Fear that we won't be good enough to do it.Fear of what other people will think.Fear that someone else will do it better.Fear of failure.As adults, we let outside influences dictate what we think we are capable of. We listen to other's voices instead of our own.Fear keeps us playing small. It keeps us from being the best version of who we are meant to be.A few years ago took a Leadership course that challenged me beyond what I thought I was capable of. One of the days involved a ropes course. I had never done a ropes course before and really didn't know what to expect.There were many elements to conquer that day, but the one that pushed me the most was climbing to the top of a telephone pole and jumping off.Yes, jumping off.As I stood at the bottom of the pole and looked up, I thought, “You have got to be kidding!”I could feel the adrenaline and fear take over my body. My heart was racing and my palms were sweaty.So, here's the thing: I was in a harness. Nothing was going to happen to me. The ropes-course facilitators were fabulous and had done this thousands of times with other people.Yet, none of that mattered in the moment. I was so consumed with fear that I froze. I climbed to the top and didn't see how I could possibly jump.I was up there for what seemed like hours, and I was terrified!One of the leaders who happens to also be one of my mentors said, “It's time!”Yes, it was.Time for me to jump.Time for me to push past my fears and trust in myself.Time for me to let go of everything that was holding me back, not just that day, but in life.I knew that if I could do this, I could do anything.Freedom waits on the other side of fear.Freedom to live fuller and take risks. Freedom to boldly be 100 percent YOU. Freedom of pride in yourself for accomplishing THAT thing that's been holding you back.Ask yourself, what is holding you back, AND what's available on the other side?Then, take a leap of faith.I would love to hear your thoughts. I was based in a small country town, bicycling to school in a black suit every day.But I felt just so isolated and lonely every day. I remember riding my bike daydreaming wishing for a husband and family.I just wanted someone to help me with this.Like an intuitive guide to talk to.Back then I was feeling out of sync, incomplete, lost, attracting dramas, so single, searching for the "one", unconscious to my Menstrual Cycle, a mess, looking for all sorts of signs.I just wished for a friend with guidance to solve my single problem with amazing insights whenever I needed her, and bring me back to my natural feminine attraction I somehow lost. With over 15 years of experience in exercise, diet, and mindset as a coach, a 2-time Paralympic athlete, and an alum of Swansea University with an undergraduate Bachelor of Science in Sports Science and the University of Chester with a Postgraduate Certificate in Sociology of Sport & Exercise, his story is a testament to his perseverance and resilience.James was diagnosed with hip dysplasia during infancy, but further examination revealed a more severe condition. He had a small fibula, a small tibia, and no femur. The radiographer even remarked that he shouldn't be able to walk, let alone achieve what he has accomplished.Despite facing obstacles from the very beginning, James persevered. His grandmother expressed her concerns about his future, wondering how he would cope and whether he would be confined to a wheelchair. James found himself alone in the sandpit in primary school while his friends played elsewhere.Despite this, James found his strength and his passion. He learned to swim butterfly at 11 or 12, much earlier than most. His coach, Mike Stone, and his mother wondered how to turn his disability into an asset. By that time, James had developed a solid upper body.James faced another setback at 15 when his mother grew frustrated with his academic performance. Despite attending the Belgian Section on the NATO base from 3 to 15, he began to fall behind in high school. He was labeled a failure and even told by one teacher that he wouldn't amount to anything. But James persevered and moved to the American section.When it came time to apply to universities, James began to doubt himself. He had been told for so long that he wouldn't amount to anything that he began to believe it. He questioned whether he was good enough to attend university and whether he would be out of his depth.James faced many setbacks in sports, including being dropped by British Swimming at 19 during his first year of university. But despite these setbacks, he never gave up.After retiring from sport at 26, James spent two years unemployed and lost. But he didn't give up. He decided to join the fitness industry to become a Performance and Success Coach.James's story is one of perseverance and resilience. Despite facing numerous obstacles throughout his life, he never gave up. Don't compare yourself to others, people proclaim. You were born with unlimited potential, and you need to adopt a better attitude about effort and success, so you've read. These are some of the slogans of the growth mindset. And cliché or not, every one of them is correct. However, fixed vs growth mindset examples like the ones we'll be discussing here take more than just simple belief. They require effort, focus, and determination to turn around. As I'm thinking about what my upcoming week looks a like…. Are you the same person that you were ten years ago?  Five years ago?  Yesterday, even?  In all likelihood your answer is “no” because as a human living on this planet, it's damn near impossible to avoid changing in some way, shape or form… WHO IS YOUR FUTURE SELF? First things first. Before you can begin to live like your future self each day, you have to know who you want your future self to be. Use these questions as a starting point: What will your life look like? Will you be working or not? If so, what will you be doing? How do you spend your free time? What does fun look like to your future self? How do you spend your days…what does your daily routine look like? How do you treat your physical body…what do you eat & drink? Do you move & exercise? What do you wear & how do you dress? How do you think? How do you feel about yourself & your life each day? DRESS LIKE YOUR FUTURE SELF What you wear matters.  Your clothing has a direct impact on not only how you look, but also on how you feel & how you show up in the world.  Put thought into how your future self will dress & what pieces she'll have in her closet. Hey Sonya Happy and Healthy Holiday season! Is that even possible? With a little bit of mindfulness, you can stay happy and healthy during the holidays!  The holidays are the best time of the year. You get to spend time with family and friends, reflect on your blessings, and eat delicious foods that you don't usually eat. Everyone loves delicious holiday foods, giving gifts and enjoying friends and family. But all these can create stress in your life and can make it difficult to have a healthy holiday season. During this awesome time of the year, your wellness routine suffers because you try to do too many things. It's easy to fall into the trap of feeling stressed out and unhealthy. This is when most people tell themselves, “Whatever, I'll just restart next year.” It happens every year: at the beginning of January, you are all motivated about your New Year's resolutions. In a month or two, you get burnt out and over your goals.  Then comes summer vacations and parties. Before you know it, fall is around the corner and along come holiday parties. As November & December come, you forget it and have no self-control, eat whatever we want as much as you want and skip the exercises because it's too cold out or because it's dark or some other excuse.  January comes around again and the cycle starts back over. Do you need to start over every year? No, you don't! Welcome back,  Today is World Compassion Day. The challenges of life affect us all regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, social status, or economic background. Each of us can use assistance or words of encouragement during such trying times. Sometimes, all people need is a little compassion… but not everyone knows how to show it. If you're one of them… you're in the right place! If you're trying to understand what it means to be compassionate and how to show compassion to yourself and others in practical ways… we've got the answer.  Just keep reading & listening. What Is Compassion? Compassion comes from the Latin word, “compati” and literally means “suffer with.” Compassionate people have the ability to show concern for the misfortunes of others. It could be anyone, adult or child, who's in trouble, sick, hungry, unhoused, or has some other unmet need. When confronted with the struggles, sufferings, or failures of others, they feel strongly motivated, almost compelled, to emotionally take on their “pain” or ease the burden. Why It's Important to be Compassionate Displaying compassion can help improve the current mental or physical state, feelings, or situation of someone else. Offering a hug or a word of encouragement, in that moment of crisis, can positively change the lives of those who feel vulnerable. They may feel motivated to find solutions they haven't considered because of their current mental state. How to Show Compassion to Yourself Self-compassion means showing yourself love and kindness the same way you do for others. Ironically, big-hearted people often unintentionally overlook the need to address their personal sufferings. These self-compassion tips are bound to help you be kinder toward yourself. 1. Recognize you, too, are human Everyone makes mistakes, some bigger than others. If your spouse or friend made similar mistakes, you may even tell them, “To err is human,” so they can feel better about themselves. Recognize that this same proverb applies to you. It may just so happen that you're not around people who can assure you that we all mess up from time to time. At times like these, you'll need to be your biggest cheerleader and biggest fan. 2. Quit beating up on yourself You're quick to comfort others when they make mistakes, fail, or feel hurt. Rather than judging them harshly, you soothe and encourage them. Yet, you judge yourself harshly and carry around self-blame, guilt, or shame. Harsh self-criticism or self-bullying can erode your peace of mind and self-esteem. Stop being so hard on yourself. Be your best friend, not your harshest critic. Acknowledge your struggles It seems easy to just ignore the obstacles or negative emotions you face. Unprocessed emotions will remain there until they are properly dealt with. Catch yourself in the moment and admit that you're having a really difficult time.  Next, think of healthy ways to comfort yourself. Repeating affirmations such as, “I accept myself for who I am, regardless of my shortcomings,” helps reinforce seeing yourself in a positive light. 4. Forgive yourself Our relationship with ourselves sets the pace for relationships with others. Self-forgiveness means to quit punishing yourself for missteps. It allows you to let go, something that helps bring healing and peace of mind. People may be more willing to “bury the hatchet” with you because you don't hold grudges against yourself. 5. Accept that you're not perfect You cannot get exactly what you want 100% of the time. Denial of this reality is a source of frustration, self-criticism, stress, and persistent personal dissatisfaction. I often say to myself, “I love how perfectly imperfect I am,” and even laugh at myself when I mess up. Taking this perspective enables you to be kinder and more gentle with yourself whenever you miss the mark. 6. Practice mindfulness The tendency to ruminate and worry about the present, past, and future is linked to anxiety. Mindfulness is a form of meditation that challenges you to live in the present moment. A boring life may not be something many of us strive for, but the truth is, occasional boredom may actually have a number of health benefits. On the other hand, if you force yourself to be focused and productive 24/7, you might actually be self-sabotaging your ability to be calm and content long term. Psychologists believe there's a happy medium when it comes to boredom: We don't want to experience too much or too little. Let's look at what causes boredom, what types of problems and perks it can lead to, plus the best ways to handle it when it arises. Increasing self-awareness about what you do and don't enjoy. Tapping into your imagination and creativity, in part because you're more likely to daydream when bored.  Boosting relationship skills and conflict resolution, since it gives you the opportunity to think over past arguments or mistakes. Encouraging you to rethink your priorities and shift to something more fulfilling.  Making you seek out novel experiences, which can open your mind and perspective. Reducing procrastinating. I spent the last couple of weeks going through my email to identify where MOST people are running into the most trouble reaching their goals. The two words that jumped out at me most often were "motivation" and consistency".I started thinking about the process of creating consistency and motivation and how I could really help you hone those skills. Ultimately, there are no goals that are valuable without recurring consistency & motivation. This episode is all about What it takes to be successful: consistency & motivation. I start by sharing what is known as The Paradox of the Growing Heap or the Sorites Paradox. It goes like this: If ten coins are not enough to make a man rich, what if you add one coin? What if you add another? Finally, you will have to say that no one can be rich unless one coin can make him so. When it comes to success, we see our choices as that one, insignificant coin. We justify excuses and exceptions by telling ourselves that this one small choice or action doesn't matter. It's just one cookie.It's just a drink. It's just one day.But, if we shift our perspective to consider the growing heap, we understand that we have the opportunity to grow our heap or not. We have the opportunity to reinforce good habits or bad. In and of itself that one choice might not seem significant. But without that one choice, you can't accumulate the consistency you need for results. Here's the challenge I have for you: Get a large jar Every time you make a choice that moves you towards your goals, I want you to add one item to the jar. You can use a grain of rice, a dried bean or a coin. Every time you make a choice that moves you away from your goals, I want you to remove one item from your jar. Here's the theory behind that: we humans like to see immediate results. Unfortunately, with health & happiness, we often have to generate consistency before we'll ever see results. If we don't see an immediate return on our efforts, we'll often give up. Then we're sure to NEVER get there. This jar will be the visible, tangible representation of your efforts or lack thereof.
