As chair and CEO of Orrick for more than two decades, he launched several groundbreaking initiatives that modernized the way the firm operated and served its clients. Today, he is a member of the board of directors at Intapp, and a member of the legal advisory board at LegalZoom. Ralph's work has extended across the legal ecosystem: legal education, law firms, law departments, legal tech companies, and public interest projects and regulatory reform. He also devotes time to thought leadership, writing a blog, and speaking at seminars and events. Show notes and helpful resources: Definition of observability: Understanding what the system is doing and whether it's doing what it's intended Three pillars of observability are Logs, Metics and Traces Logs are like notes to yourself from the code, and are only as structured and useful as the notes you write Metrics are numbers, usually counts or measurements, that represent what you want to track Traces tie together the different components of a distributed system into one object, capturing the flow and timing of a transaction or operation Events are narrative-level components that describe key occurrences in the environment MELT is the acronym for Metrics, Events, Logs, and Traces Context as a 4th pillar Three layers of Context; 1. On Campus, both international and local Appalachian State Students are participating in the International Appalachian's annual Coffee Buzz 5k fundraiser. INTAPP is a student-run organization that aims to support and encourage App State students to participate in education abroad and uses The Coffee Buzz 5k to raise funds for the Landon Hill Memorial Scholarship. The Appalachian reports this scholarship is awarded to students who demonstrate a financial need to be able to fulfill their educational goals through studying abroad. While registration has closed for the event, participants can complete the virtually formatted race from April 4th to April 18th. In local news, Todd Ishee, the North Carolina Commissioner of Prisons, gave a presentation on the struggles with COVID-19 safety precautions and vaccine reluctance within the State's prison system. The Appalachian reports that the early parts of the pandemic caused a large strain on prisons, primarily due to constant adaptations that needed to be made to conform to changing Centers for Disease Control and Preventions Guidelines. Ishee said, *QUOTE* “People throughout the prison system, both our staff and offenders, began to get sick pretty quickly.” *END QUOTE* Ishee also went on to discuss the reluctance of both the incarcerated people and the staff members of the prison to receive the vaccine, with 65-75% of incarcerated people and 50% of employees willing to be vaccinated. Nationally, The Wall Street Journal reports protests, looting and clashes with police resulted after a 20-year-old Black man was killed in a traffic stop near Minneapolis. Police reports state that the shooting took place around 2 p.m. Sunday and was the result of Daunte Wright reentering his vehicle after being pulled over for having outstanding warrants. Shortly after this, anywhere from 100 to 200 people marched on the Brooklyn Center police department, throwing rocks and breaking into businesses until the Minnesota National Guard and both state and local police departments dispersed the crowd. Expect a high of 65 degrees and a low of 43 degrees with gusts of wind reaching 10-20 mph.

Does a lot of creditor's rights and probate work, business divorces (LAUGH AT 1:20 THAT I NEED TO EDIT OUT OR ADD MY OWN IN)They are full-service to provide nearly all of a businesses' legal needsCOVID update (as of 1/28/21)Firm has been at the forefront of being back in the office and open since May 2020 (not mandated/required); most of the partners like to work in the office, so they have taken advantage of being 50% in the office to adhere to the governor's ordersLots of plexiglass in the office to protect people; temperature checks; other protocolsClients have been asking lots of questions about how they can open back up, protect employees, etc.With economic downturn there are always breaches of contracts, leases, as well as force majeure litigationFirm has continued to be busy, and they have hired five new lawyers during the past yearShe hasn't been back in the courthouse since last year, and every hearing, etc. has been onlineThere is a time/place for remote hearings and they aren't all badWouldn't want to try a case, or do all hearings that way, but it can give younger lawyers the chance to be more involved (no extra expense of travel/wasted time)Stories from virtual hearings (judge not turning on his video/black box only; getting sworn in to attest to information being shared on screen to save time/money)Foreclosure suspensions have an impact; bankruptcy is a wild rideAdvice for lawyers in practiceIt is called the "practice of law" for a reason; it is always evolving/changing. You will make mistakes, and when you do, don't hide it/bury it. Come up with a plan to fix it and don't do anything until you tell the partner what the mistake was and your plan to fix it.There are very few things in law you can't fix (except perhaps statute of limitations).The practice of law is hard, and so young lawyers need to show enthusiasm and devotion to it.It's not about a big personality. Follow up on emails. Don't wait to be told to do the next steps if you know what they are.Ghosting on email is a bad plan - it sends a signal that the sender is not important. Even responding that you received the message and will get back with them soon is better than not responding.The best associates are the ones who, when the partner wakes up in the night thinking about a client matter, realizes that the associate is working on it, and can go right back to sleep.Email is the main source of communication and its important for archiving, etc. But they are finding that texting is a useful way to ping/remind people of things, even to say that there is an email to respond toAdvice for lawyers who are job seekingKeep resumes to one page if at all possible; they see so many resumes there isn't time to read multi-page resumesLaw school still matters if it is someone who has only been out a couple of yearsCover letters can help highlighting the real stuff you've doneShe loves to see interests/hobbies; wants to know you are a real person. Maybe even add "Covid hobbies."Wants to practice law with people they likeEspecially in small/mid-size firms, one person makes an impact on the cultureThis can backfire depending on what the interests are!Final ThoughtAdvice she didn't get that she wish she had: Start thinking about building your own practice and your own clients, even from day one. Ralph Baxter, Daniel Rodriguez, and Dan Linna use their final episode as hosts of LTNow to discuss life before and during the pandemic, and what they predict is next in their respective fields of expertise. Linna references disruptive innovation theorist Clayton Christensen in considering a different way for law firms to think, plan and talk about technology. Instead of choosing between prioritizing disruptive tech vs operational innovation, Linna says firms need to balance both to keep pace with an evolving industry. Rodriguez reviews the pandemic's impact on law schools, already struggling with decreased enrollment, law school finances, and student debt. He discusses regulation of law schools, the shift to all online early in the pandemic, grading changes, and how remote and hybrid learning is creating opportunities for improving teaching during precious hours in person and via technology while remote. Ralph Baxter spent nearly a quarter century as chairman and CEO of Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe, leading its growth from a regional San Francisco law firm specializing in municipal finance to one of the world’s largest firms with offices worldwide and a diverse array of practices. Along the way, both Baxter and Orrick earned kudos for their many innovations in the delivery and pricing of legal services and the staffing and structure of the firm.  Now retired from Orrick, Baxter serves as an advisor and consultant devoted to inspiring positive transformation in the ways legal services are delivered globally. In particular, he believes that technology and process design enable legal services to be delivered better, faster and cheaper, and to be available at reasonable cost to all who need them, and his goal is to help make this happen.  Baxter is also an advisor to a number of legal organizations. He was chairman of the advisory board of the Thomson Reuters Legal Executive Institute, is on the board of directors of Intapp, and is on the legal advisory board of LegalZoom. He was previously on the boards of directors of both Lex Machina and Ravel Law prior to their acquisitions by LexisNexis.  He is a fellow and senior advisor to CodeX, the Stanford University Center for Law and Informatics, and is a member of the advisory boards of the Stanford Law School Center on the Legal Profession, the Harvard Law School Center on the Legal Profession, and the Georgetown Law School Center for the Study of the Legal Profession.   Included in 2009 in the ABA Journal’s inaugural class of Legal Rebels, Baxter was an elementary school teacher before attending law school. Jennifer Roberts, Manager, Strategic Research at Intapp, discusses exactly what it means to be a data scientist, and why law firms are leveraging them to help run their legal operations. When it comes to "the business of law," Roberts says this is where the results of data science steps in and shows its value. Data science can help answer questions like, "how can we predict the price of legal services?" "How can we predict the scope of a matter?" "How can we help with legal project management?" And even "how can we predict what a client's needs are?" Or, "what will these clients buy from us in the future?" Data science and analytics help uncover the facts that not all lawyers and not all legal matters are totally unique. Roberts also helps us answer those naysayers who claim that they do not have enough data, or that they have Filthy Data™. While working together at Falfurrias Capital, Rob Cummings and Ben Harrison experienced a need for vertically-focused software for the deal making industry.  What ensued was an 8-year growth story that achieved a significant milestone when DealCloud was sold to Intapp, Inc. in August 2018.  Make no mistake, DealCloud is still growing at a rapid pace and is a critical component to the Intapp growth story.  But for Rob and Ben, getting to an exit event capped an incredible run together from when they started as a 2-man operation inside of a “closet” at Packard Place. Now that the company has been sold – making legends out of Ben and Rob in Charlotte’s still young startup scene – I wanted to sit down and talk with Ben and Rob about their experience.  Sure AvidXchange and Red Ventures and even Lending Tree have made it big but DealCloud signals new times for Charlotte’s entrepreneurs. This feels different.  It was a homegrown team who raised money through multiple rounds and sold the business at life changing terms. Listen to Ben share a few stories of the early days.  How they had to hustle for deals and stay with friends and relatives on trips to Atlanta to save costs. It’s funny to hear Rob talk about where he was when the deal was announced and how that day fell into place.  It all worked out in the end and they are here to tell you more than you’ve probably heard them tell before.  It’s a great episode and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did recording it. StartCharlotte and Innovate Charlotte both received $100,000 grants from NC Idea – propelling their growth and cementing their place in Charlotte’s startup ecosystem. Local startups like Skipper and Rabbu – among others raise money locally and from afar. Collective Hustle is founded by four women to make entrepreneurship and investing more accessible in Charlotte. Sam Smith announces the first Seed the South – highlighting Charlotte’s entrepreneurial ecosystem – will be January 9, 2019. Scott Pope launches the NC Health Innovators – which is working to put Charlotte on the map as a healthcare as a business startup ecosystem (read about their latest event here).

Julie (Jules) Carman has always been a runner, like good enough to earn a Track & Field scholarship to Cal for running 200’s kind of runner. There are things she learned running that carry over directly to her career, things that she feels you can’t get anywhere else: resilience, mental strength, proper mindset and discipline. Running also made Jules comfortable being uncomfortable, allowing her to easily mold to new situations and get to the next level. In this episode, we talk about how things in life are much bigger than work, but it’s sometimes difficult to keep that perspective. And it’s a very slippery slope once you lose focus on the passions that truly drive you. Professionalism will tell you to work more and do those passions less, making them dormant and eventually extinct altogether. Julie Carman works as the Senior Director, Global Accounting and Consulting Segment at Intapp in the San Francisco Bay Area.
