N. Guenka (Meditation Teacher) Effect On Emotions I have that observer within me that watches things rising and falling out falling now for a while. For many years in my life, I thought that mindfulness was so that we didn't have to feel our emotions anymore. We didn't have to be in that, I realized, is an ignorance within us. We're supposed to feel fully. But if I feel sorrow fully, but I don't say I am a sad person. It's two different things. Do I identify with the emotions? Or do I allow myself to feel it fully? Thoughts On Breathing Breathing is the great gift. The deep breath, the holding of the breath, the holding the bottom of the breath; all of those are wonderful techniques for us to turn on our parasympathetic nervous system to quiet the mind to let the body know it's safe. So the thoughts of fear that are constantly rising from our physicality, quiet down, and we can access that awareness underneath all the thoughts. Bullying Story I was bullied in junior high school, I grew very quickly. I was five feet eight inches tall in junior high school. And I was the tallest student and was taller than some of my teachers. I was gawky and had goofy hair. So I came from an elementary school where I was the president of the Student Council was kind of this celebrated person. And then I got into junior high school and got bullied by other girls. It was very painful and a big shock to me that people were cruel that way. And I retreated into myself and so, you know, that stays with you. It's fear, right? Fear of judgment. I think around that time that internal negative voice became a megaphone within me. And it's been something I've fought and tried to understand through my whole life. Now, do I see a benefit of that experience? Quite a bit. It drove me to understanding myself in psychology and spiritual practice. When you can feel another's pain, you can't bully them. And, and when you're bullied, you can see I can look at those girls, and I can see what they were afraid of. I can see where it was coming from. it. It opens empathy. It's only compassion that problems would solve. Suggested Resources Books: Anything by Alan Watts and Robert Thurman Book: Bhagavad Gita As It Is by A. C. Rahshaana Green is the Director of Equity and Contemplative Psychotherapy at the Nalanda Institute. After receiving her BA in Biophysical Chemistry from Dartmouth College and an MBA from University of Texas-Austin, Rahshaana combined her passion for science and business skills to spend 15+ years in Marketing and Business Development for medical device and life science companies. One day, a car accident helped her find her way to a yoga mat as a means of recovery and it opened her eyes to the power of embodied practices as a tool for self-discovery, self-care and self-healing. Rahshaana got trained in Forrest yoga to help bring these tools to others. She then pursued personal study in meditation, mindfulness, and compassion practices to deepen her own growth and to empower others to cultivate well-being and resilience. When she's not teaching or coaching, Rahshaana is a global explorer, continuously seeking new methods of movement to enrich her life and the lives of those she teaches. In this conversation, we really drilled down into what makes diversity initiatives successful versus unsuccessful, potent versus ineffective. We discussed how and why code switching functions, what are some of the key traits of a truly inclusive leader, what she believes is the future of diversity and equity work, and how she's able to stay positive, focused and radiantly alive while pursuing what can be a challenging career path. Rahshaana Green is a multidisciplinary wellness consultant who combines her knowledge and experience in science, yoga and building human connection to help people heal. She's a Forrest Yoga Guardian and the Director of Equity and Contemplative Psychotherapy at the Nalanda Institute, where she directs and teaches within the Contemplative Psychotherapy Programs. In their conversation, Rahshaana tells Anne about being a curious kid, a high performer and voracious reader who used books as windows into other worlds. She talks about how she learned the power of agency from her mother, who taught her and her siblings, with a ‘scared-straight' approach, how to make choices to take life into the direction they intended. The oldest of four, Rahshaana admits that her choices were also a potential blueprint for her siblings, and how a desire to influence them positively led her to pursue an early career in science. After receiving her BA in Biophysical Chemistry from Dartmouth College and an MBA from The University of Texas at Austin, Rahshaana talks about how she combined her passion for science and business skills, which led her to pursue a fifteen-year career in Marketing and Business Development for medical device and life science companies.Rahshaana then explains how an accident directed her towards yoga — Forrest Yoga specifically. Able to heal herself through this practice, she tells Anne how she made the choice to certify as a teacher and with the support of an amazing manager was able to do so in parallel to her career. She continued to pursue a personal study in meditation, mindfulness and compassion practices to deepen her own growth and to empower others to cultivate well-being and resilience.Reaching the present, Anne asks Rahshaana to talk through her journey that led her to the Nalanda Institute in Contemplative Science (which is, incidentally, how the two became acquainted). Rahshaana talks in depth about the programs she teaches in Compassion-Based Resilience Training (CBRT). And who needs to explore CBRT? Probably everyone, according to her, because, as we can probably all attest, ‘human-ing' is hard. To conclude, the pair discusses how the power of compassion and mindfulness combined can help people access emotions, including difficult emotions, and become resilient to feelings like discomfort. And they talk about the importance of intimacy — a word that can describe the connection we can hope to have with the body — as a form of ultimate intelligence. A profound and inspiring conversation. This episode of the A Pinch of Magick podcast, is all about embracing the wild, the sacred, and that deep-seated longing we all experience at some point. Life has this uncanny knack for taking us on detours, sometimes making us feel more lost than found. But what if that sense of 'being lost' is actually an invitation to rediscover ourselves? This week on A Pinch of Magick podcast, I have the absolute pleasure of sitting with Wendy Havlir, a shamanic practitioner, teacher, poet, published writer, and founder of The School of Wild & Holy. Pull up your cosiest blanket, grab that cup of tea, and join us as we delve deep into: The magick of daily practices and devotion – and why these rituals might just be the lifebuoy you need. The art of longing and the treasures it can reveal about our true selves. Wendy's intimate journey of self-discovery. That heart-wrenching pain of abandoning yourself and how to find your way back home. Navigating the murky waters of grief and despair with sacred practices as your compass. The "brilliant sanity" in our stories and the courage to let them go when they no longer serve. And, my personal favourite, embracing our wild nature and unlocking parts of ourselves we've hidden away. Wendy's insights are a masterclass in self-awareness, growth, and the beauty of raw, unfiltered truth. By the end of this heart-to-heart, you'll be ready to not just face your fears but dance with their truth. So, if you're yearning to ignite that spark within, to lean into your wildness, and to truly honour your deepest desires, this is the episode you've been waiting for. As Wendy beautifully puts it, "Know nothing and be open to everything." You're in for a transformative ride. Let's get wild and holy together! Dear Listeners, This Podcast series on the Windhorse practice of Basic Attendance explores the discipline as an expression of the wisdom, compassion and resulting reciprocity that can manifest in ordinary human relationships when cultivated within a ground of openness and relational warmth. I came to the Windhorse approach after graduating from the Naropa Institute—now University—in 1980, and I had the good fortune to be around when this was being envisioned with other Naropa graduates. My attraction to this vision and practice had to do with the emphasis on a person being fundamentally sane and healthy, as well as to the importance placed on having an engaging and supportive social environment as they work with their current life challenges. It also met my need to continue working with others in a setting where I could include my practice and understanding of Contemplative Psychotherapy. My exposure to the first Windhorse Team that had formed was at a social event in the therapeutic household of the “client”, and I was struck by the mutuality of connection among all members of the Team, including the so-called “client”. There was such a felt sense of closeness and camaraderie among everyone, as well as warmth and acceptance. It felt so wholesome to be in this environment. As a result, I became involved with this approach and was fortunate to be an active member of Maitri Psychological Services (as the Windhorse organization was named then) through its duration in the 1980's. The presentations and ensuing discussions included in this Podcast represent a window into the range of experiences that can occur when a Team member and “client” are spending time together for their Basic Attendance shifts. I have always felt that the possibilities of what can arise and be included during a shift is only limited by the collective and mutual imagination of the Team member and the “client” at that time, given that the entire community where it is taking place is available as a support and inspiration for their engagement. As a result, they can engage in household activities like attending to the physical environment, food preparation, or making art, to name a few possibilities. Also, activities can occur outside of the household, which could include taking classes together, going to the gym or for long hikes. The examples shared in the Podcast quite beautifully express the invitation to be present to what is arising within oneself and the “client” in the environment. This, to me, is the ground of the Basic Attendance practice, as an experience and expression of the co-presence between the Team member and the “client”. And given the Team member's sensitivity, this can unfold into very poignant and intimate relational sharing. So, the Art of this Practice—and it is precisely that, rather than a recipe or list of techniques to apply—is a very human endeavor which can bring out the best in each person. The invitation there also is to face the full range of one's experiences—i.e. fears and joys—as this unfolds, in a relational environment that supports this. We hope you enjoy this Podcast about these intimate and potentially healing encounters. Thank you for joining us, Kathy Emery

We will learn: How we begin to develop Equanimity, or “nonjudgmental awareness”. The Four-Step Practice in Karuna Training to skillfully lean into and stay with difficult emotional energy. How to transmute confusion into wisdom. I keep finding that the more we go back to our roots, the easier everything becomes - health, peace, joy, connection. We think we live in a modern world with modern problems, so clearly, we need a modern solution, but what if that's not the case? Yes, things today may look very different on the outside, but inside, we're still the same souls seeking what they came here for from the beginning of time. So today, we're tapping into the ancient teachings of Tibetan Buddhism to apply them to the modern challenges of everyday life. Our guest is Melissa Moore, PhD. She has dedicated her life to teaching Buddhism and Contemplative Psychology. She has a master's degree in Contemplative Psychotherapy and a PhD in Psychological Anthropology. She has three decades of expertise and leadership in Karuna training, and is also the author of “The Diamonds Within Us: Uncovering Brilliant Sanity Through Contemplative Psychology”. Welcome to this podcast discussion of the life and times of RD Laing. Dr. Laing was an iconoclastic 20th century psychiatrist who was a noted author, teacher, social critic, philosopher, poet, and jazz pianist. You are about to experience the first half of a lively discussion among three of his long-time students and colleagues as they recall and share intimate experiences of living alongside this remarkable man. Our three guests are Nita Gage, Fritjof Capra, and Michael Thompson. They are now masters of their own respective fields who are deeply connected with each other over decades shared in their extended Laing community. I regard these inspiring people as first-generation legacy-carriers of Dr. Laing's discoveries and teaching. I felt honored to join this dialogue since I also worked alongside Dr. Laing during the summers of 1985 and 1987 when he was a scholar-in-residence here in Boulder, CO. It was during these few months that I experienced his deeply humane and authentic way of being with patients—and those of us beside him—that he termed ‘co-presence'. Dr. Laing was keenly interested in joining Buddhist meditation with the psychotherapy encounter to make manifest the natural co-presence of both persons. The essential qualities of this co-presence include safety to be fully honest, complete freedom of experience, and non-transgression (meaning no harm to the other). Co-presence would turn out to be one of his final gifts as Dr. Laing passed away at age 62 in 1989. This discussion begins with an exploration of what is important to know about RD Laing, which not only invokes his memory but also provides the viewer with direct glimpses of what it felt like to be with him. The participants then share a broad range of challenging experiences of learning with Dr. Laing and what their relationships with him were like. The question of Dr. Laing's legacy and lasting influence is woven into this discussion. Dr. Laing's charisma and cultural fame are fading with time. Yet his pioneering work with mindfulness that can charge the therapeutic encounter with authentic presence inspires many of us to continue that work. There are far too many other dimensions to Dr. Laing's philosophy, social criticism, and therapy approach to describe here. To learn more about Dr. Laing's work, you can read two papers published in the Journal of Contemplative Psychotherapy, which are archived on the Windhorse Legacy Project website. Dr. Laing wrote: Hatred of Health, during his stay in Boulder (1987) You can also click here to read a retrospective interview that Edward Podvoll, MD, gave “In Memoriam” that discusses Dr. Laing's persona and contributions We hope you are able to return, in the near future, to experience the second half of this provocative discussion. Thank you for your interest in the Windhorse Journal, and in promoting authentic relationship in all aspects of life.
