This week Luis is joined by a pioneer in intergenerational trauma and author of "It Didn't Start With You", Mark Wolynn. They dive into language and the history of stored and inherited family trauma. They discuss how trauma unconsciously passes down through DNA and the expression of that through verbal and nonverbal trauma language. Mark also tells stories from his practice and talks about rewiring the brain through positive practices. "Scientifically, when a trauma happens, it changes us. So literally it causes a chemical reaction in our DNA, and this changes how our genes function.""We rarely make the link that our anxiety, our hyper-vigilance, our shutdown, our depression is connected to our parents and our grandparents. We just think we're wired this way, and that's what I keep running into, people just saying 'Well that's how I am, I'm wired this way.'" "We have the symptoms but they may not be ours." Episode 61: This week we're straight talking inherited family trauma with award winning author Mark Wolynn. Mark literally wrote the book on generational trauma "It Didn't Start With You" and on this very special episode Mark breaks down the science of how traumatic experiences that happened to our parents and grandparents can be affecting us now! He shares some clinical examples with us, tells us how to identify if we are carrying family trauma and most importantly teaches us how to start to heal if we are. Mark also shares his amazing story of how he was facing blindness until he healed his own trauma. Peter jumps on for a catch up, Kamron is smiling after getting his first car, with tragic news events we chat about how in Ireland we idealise the dead and how the "the good (front) room" typifies the persona that we all present. Could your fear, anxiety, and depression (and other issues) have less to do with your current experiences and more to do with what your parents and grandparents experienced? Short answer: Yes. Inherited trauma is real. Research shows it plays a far greater role in our physical and emotional health than ever before realized. We humans biologically pass down our trauma experiences to our children and grandchildren. It's not a just a "feeling" thing: Our DNA actually changes based on the traumas of prior generations. Listen in as Mark Wolynn, leading expert in the field of inherited trauma, and bestselling author of "It Didn't Start With You: How Inherited Trauma Shapes Who We Are and How to End the Cycle" as he explains this life-changing phenomenon and what we can do to heal from trauma that spans generations.

This show with Mark Wolynn about Family Constellation therapy was just so much fun. Mark Wolynn is the author of It Didn't Start with You: How Inherited Family Trauma Shapes Who We Are and How to End the Cycle. If you have been listening to our show for a while, you know just how much emphasis I place on mental, emotional and spiritual beliefs regarding health, wellness and disease. You see I don't believe physical diseases have physical causes. I believe there are invisible opeprators that turn on and off gene expression and these invisible operators are things like... 1. Connection to family 2. Light 3. Radiation 4. Disconnection (from ourselves, from God, from others, from our mission in life, from the planet, from animals etc) The drivers of disease are invisible. What controls the mitochondria for example? Light, vibration, frequency and energy. Having a spiritual connection to our family is so critical for our health. Many times our disconnection from our ancestry is the driving cause of disease. I know this sounds like a radical concept but the more you understand it, the more it makes sense. This knowledge essentially gives us 1 more tool we can use in our toolbelt of wellness, health and disease prevention. I hope youe enjoy this show with Mark Wolynn on Family Constellation Therapy! Hello Caffeinators! As we approach the end of May and #mentalhealthawarenessmonth, it's easy to turn the page and move on to the next thing. But mental health is something that needs constant attention. So while the calendar may turn to June, please keep your mental health calendar stuck squarely in the month of May. To that end, we are bringing you one final episode in this series. When you hear the phrase "workplace violence", what do you think of? Perhaps a confrontation or physical altercation with a client? Perhaps physical violence between staff members? There is sooooo much more to it than that, and thankfully we had Sarah Stowman, CVT, CCFP, CTP, come by the Vet Tech Cafe to break all this down for us and she COMPLETELY blew our minds. This conversation was thought provoking on so many levels, and we really think you'll feel the same way. We promise you will have a new perspective on workplace violence and workplace trauma. So let us pour you a cup of our cafe du jour and listen to what Sarah has to say-we think you'll find it to be a very helpful hour of conversation. Women are believed to be the caregivers, that they are not the main wealth creator, such that they are often underpaid. This is one of the self-sabotaging behaviors around money which was lent to us from our parents and from past family generations. There are several money scripts that are in our subconscious but have a profound impact on our financial behavior. Our conversation with our guest in today's episode of Live Your Dreams Awake will be about the misconceptions around wealth and how to bust the myths around wealth and abundance. Our guest Catherine Morgan is a qualified financial planner and she helps people, especially women on how to manage emotions when handling money and rewrite their stories about money. Enjoy listening! REMEMBER - "When we feel not good enough, we feel we won't have enough." - Catherine Morgan This week's feng shui tip is to help you enhance prosperity in your life. So what do you do? Well, you write a check to yourself from the universe for the amount of money that you'd like to attract into your life. This might sound a little bit crazy but it did work for Jim Carrey and countless other people that I know. So, all you have to do is write a check to yourself from the universe for the amount of money that you wanna attract into your life and place it somewhere special. HIGHLIGHTS OF WHAT WE COVER DURING THIS EPISODE: Catherine introduces herself and her background to becoming a Financial Adviser. How did Catherine end up deciding to be a financial planner? The shift from being deep in debt to get out of the cycle of not being good enough to handle money; from £30,000 in debt to running a multi 6-figure business. Beliefs on women around wealth creation. Action steps people can do on how they look at money? (...Looking at the patterns of money beliefs that were lent to us.) Catherine Morgan's advice on investing for women. We’ve been exploring the state of retirement in the United States on The Long View. Last week, we talked with progressive labor economist Teresa Ghilarducci. On this week’s episode, we chatted with Andrew Biggs, resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute. He is more sanguine about the state of retirement in the U.S., though he is also in favor of some reforms. Andrew is an expert on Social Security reform, state and local government pensions, and public sector pay and benefits. Before joining AEI, Biggs was the principal deputy commissioner of the Social Security Administration, where he oversaw the agency's policy research efforts. In 2005, as an associate director of the White House National Economic Council, he worked on Social Security reform. In 2001, he joined the staff of then-President George W. Bush's Commission to Strengthen Social Security. He holds a bachelor's degree from Queen's University Belfast in Northern Ireland, master's degrees from Cambridge University and the University of London, and a Ph.D. from the London School of Economics.BackgroundBioThe American Enterprise InstituteState of Retirement in the U.S. The Model of Income in the Near Term (MINT)National Retirement Risk Index“Social Security Replacement Rates and Other Benefit Measures: An In-Depth Analysis,” Congressional Budget Office, cbo.gov, April 2019.“How Do Children Affect the Need to Save for Retirement?” by Andrew Biggs, aei.org, Dec. 16, 2019.“Two Decades Ago, Progressives Warned of a Retirement Crisis. There have always been health inequities in certain communities, but the Covid-19 epidemic has exacerbated many of them and brought them to the forefront of the public's mind over the past year. In this episode, Rae sits down with Fred Cerise, CEO of Parkland Health and Hospital System, and Steve Miff, president and CEO of Parkland's Center for Clinical Innovation, to talk about why the health system stepped in to address inequities in Covid-19 vaccinations and how they're doing it. At the end of this episode, Rae talks to Solomon Banjo about what Parkland does well, where they could push further, and offer his advice to organizations at the beginning of their equity journey. It’s part of the human condition to run away from pain. Most of us have habits that we acquired as a way to cope with painful childhood experiences or traumas, which unfortunately don’t serve us as adults. These habits can manifest as addiction in a wide variety of forms, from substance abuse to overworking. If you feel a sense of deep guilt, without recognizing the source of it, you’re not alone. As children we pick up the energy around us, start to think things are our fault, and we don’t know how to drop that feeling as we grow up. This has a very heavy impact on our emotional, mental, and physical health. On today’s Broken Brain Podcast, our host Dhru talks to Dr. Gabor Maté, a retired physician who, after 20 years of family practice and palliative care experience, worked for over a decade in Vancouver’s Downtown EastSide with patients challenged by drug addiction and mental illness. Gabor is the bestselling author of four books published in twenty-five languages, and is an internationally renowned speaker highly sought after for his expertise on addiction, trauma, childhood development, and the relationship of stress and illness. His book on addiction received the Hubert Evans Prize for literary non-fiction. For his groundbreaking medical work and writing he has been awarded the Order of Canada, his country’s highest civilian distinction, and the Civic Merit Award from his hometown, Vancouver. His books include: In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters With Addiction; When the Body Says No; Exploring the Stress-Disease Connection; Scattered: How ADD Originates and What You Can Do About It; and (with Gordon Neufeld) Hold on to Your Kids: Why Parents Need to Matter More Than Peers. In this episode, Dhru and Dr. Maté talk about detangling our traumatic life experiences to live more aware lives. Dr. Maté and Dhru each open up about their own experiences with addictive tendencies and how those patterns were based out of a deep compensation and survival mechanisms that all of us can relate to. They also talk about what is happening in the addicts brain and how to unravel awareness to promote healing. In his famously insightful way, Dr. Maté discusses the true meaning of recovery and how we can all work through trauma to find our truest selves. In this episode, we dive into: -The pain-body concept (4:06)-Dr. Maté’s definition of addiction (9:57)-How a painful experience or trauma is at the center of all addictions (15:03) -Dr. Maté’s childhood trauma and how it led to his own addictive behaviors (22:01)-Understanding the difference between responsibility and blame, and why “it’s not all our parents’ fault” (30:29)-What is happening physiologically in the brains of addicted people (39:36) -The key to healing painful experiences (46:37) -What does it mean to recover (47:56)-How to approach the healing of behavior addictions fostered by our culture (51:11)-Dr. Maté’s non-negotiable self-care practice (1:00:03)For more on Dr. Gabor Mate you can follow him on Facebook @DrGaborMate, on Twitter @DrGaborMate, on YouTube @DrGaborMate, and through his website https://drgabormate.com/. “The reaction to the trauma doesn’t necessarily stop with the people who experienced it.” Do you have symptoms that you can’t explain? For example, are you overly anxious for no obvious reason? Do you instinctively push people away or intentionally disassociate from difficult feelings in your body? Do you have irrational fears or thoughts about what could happen that don’t make logical sense? If so, there’s a chance you may be experiencing inherited trauma; that’s trauma, which started with your parents or your grandparents - not you. Generational trauma can impact our lives in profound ways. Fortunately, there is something you can do to transform the fears and soothe the feelings. There is a way to break the pattern so that the ancestral trauma stops with you. Mark Wolynn - author of It Didn’t Start With You and the director of The Family Constellation Institute in San Francisco has devoted his life to understanding and healing inherited family trauma. In this must-hear episode, Mark reveals how his work holds the potential to wildly transform your life as well as the life of your children and grandchildren [even if they’ve not yet been born]. “We don’t make the link that our anxiety, our depression, our shutdown is connected to our parents and our grandparents. We just think we’re wired this way.” The concept of inherited trauma is backed by science. As Mark explains in the episode, as we learn more about epigenetics, our clarity about the way trauma is passed on increases. Ancestral trauma is often behind the curtain. Logic can convince us that certain things are best left unsaid. But just because we don’t hear things doesn’t mean we can’t feel things. Mark’s work empowers people to dig deeper into their familial setting so they can understand the reactions and feelings locked in their body. As a result, his clients get to experience unimaginable feelings of freedom, closure, and clarity. You can get a taste of the potential that healing ancestral trauma could have for you when you tune into this episode. What is inherited trauma? What’s a healthy way to experience a healing event if you can’t tap back into the original trauma? How can you learn to be present with what is? How to differentiate between attachment and generational trauma. Why traumas affect fathering and mothering. The profound difference between forgiveness and understanding. What is inner child healing and why is it powerful healing work? How healing generational trauma impacts your children [and your children’s children].Changing how our genes express to protect our kids [and grandchildren]. Why Mark is passionate about this work [and how it healed his sight]. The significance of Mark crying into his mother’s clothes. And more… “We’ve got to tame our trauma responses so we can live a loving, open, compassionate, and gentle life.” How to contact Discover more details about Mark’s work at https://markwolynn.comLike Mark on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/mark.wolynn.31Follow Mark on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/markwolynn/We thrive on your feedback, so if you’ve enjoyed this show, please rate us and leave us a review. In this episode, I speak about the difference between empathy & being an Empath. Being empathic means the lifelong practice of understanding everyone. Being and Empath is the experience of feeling everyone. The untrained Empath, so to speak, is in a constant physical state of overwhelm. They may avoid people altogether. And this experience of physically feeling people's energies to the detriment of one's own body is a response to unprocessed trauma. That trauma doesn't have to mean abuse or even childhood issues. It can mean birth trauma and trauma while developing in the womb, which I speak about in this episode.Healing trauma and creating safety in the body sets up the necessary environment to practice unconditional empathy and allows the Empath to learn the difference between what's mine and what's yours.I reference Mark Wolynn's book titled It Didn't Start With You, which poignantly explores the phenomenon of inter-generational trauma. You can find more on his work here: https://www.markwolynn.com/.
Depression. Anxiety. Chronic Pain. Phobias. Obsessive thoughts. The evidence is compelling: the roots of these difficulties may not reside in our immediate life experiences or in chemical imbalances in our brains - but in the lives of our parents, grandparents, and even great-grandparents. The latest research, now making headlines, supports what many have long intuited: that traumatic experience are passed down through generations. I will take you through a slideshow & some of the signs of trauma. Based on the book I read: It Didn't Start with You Written by: Mark Wolynn +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ The Power of Healing Your Energy. This helps us look at our worst fear and decipher if it actually comes from inherited generational trauma or not. It's a way to outline and distill down to this nugget of gold because it's one of those questions that when we get to the answer, our body starts to reverberate. If someone's greatest fear is that they will harm a child and they ask themselves the question, 'Have I ever harmed a child?', and the answer is, 'no.' Then you ask yourself the bridging question, 'Has anyone in my family ever harmed a child?' The answer to that Bridging Question and how you feel after asking yourself it will help you down the path of healing." - Mark Wolynn Verbal vs Nonverbal Generational Trauma Language "The language such as that in the Bridging Question that we ask to follow and understand our family history doesn't have to be verbal. What I've discovered is there's 'verbal trauma language' and then there's 'nonverbal trauma language.' When a trauma language is verbal, that's when we say to ourselves, 'I'll be abandoned,' or 'I'll be left behind,' but when it's nonverbal, we have to look for the events in our family history. The physical, the emotional symptoms that show up after something unsettling that happens to us. We look for the fears or anxieties that strike suddenly when we reach a particular age. Often it's the same age as when something happened in the family history." - Mark Wolynn What Anchors Generational Traumas? "Why do these traumas repeat themselves later on in generations? It goes beyond just epigenetics. We know from embryology that when our grandmother was five months pregnant with our mother that all the eggs that our mother would ever have were already implanted in our mother's womb when she's a fetus; one of which is us. So, there's this shared biological environment and when we combine it with how a mother's emotions are chemically communicated to the fetus through the placenta, this can biochemically alter the genetic expression. There are other factors but to answer the question directly - What anchors these generational traumas? When the traumas aren't talked about, when the healing isn't complete, when the pain, grief, shame, and embarrassment is so great that people can't look at it." - Mark Wolynn Links From Today's Show 311 Mark Wolynn Healing Trauma | The "INCUBATOR" Wound In Relationship It Didn't Start With You The Family Constellation Institute The Inherited Trauma Institute The Hellinger Institute of Northern California ION*Biome 302 Mark Groves 277 Christine Hassler Bruce Lipton The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle Early Life Stress in Both Mice and Men Reduces the Levels of Same Sperm miRNAs Implicated in the Transmission of Stress Induced Phenotypes Across Generations Isabelle Mansuy - Laboratory of Neuroepigenetics at the University of Zurich Fear Of A Smell Can Be Passed Down Several Generations Halting Legacies of Trauma | Brian Dias | TEDxEmory Three Generations of Family History - Inherited Family Trauma Creating an Inherited Family Traumagram The Legacy of Unfinished Business It Didn't Start With You, Mark Wolynn Leave Wellness Force a review on iTunes breathwork.io M21 Wellness Guide Wellness Force Community Mark Wolynn Facebook Instagram Twitter About Mark Wolynn Director of The Family Constellation Institute, The Inherited Trauma Institute and The Hellinger Institute of Northern California, Mark Wolynn is North America’s leader in Inherited Family Trauma. First we break down misconceptions surrounding what it really means to be "pro-all life," explaining why being anti-death penalty, pro-gun control, pro-social justice, and pro-open borders doesn't make a person pro-life. Then we examine the differences between Joe Biden's and Donald Trump's education platforms. Joe Biden and the Democrats are explicitly anti-school choice — a position that disproportionately negatively affects poor and special-needs children. Donald Trump's administration has invested millions into ensuring families have the ability to choose the education that's best for their kids. Next week we will be airing our 100th episode! Which by the way you will NOT want to miss, but we wanted to share a few things in this episode before you listen in next week. Over the last few months...a lot has been happening behind the scenes. With all that has happened and changed, we felt it fitting to let you know about Season 2 of Becoming! The heart of Becoming will be the same, we will always be keeping the teen in mind. However the teens who have been listening from the start are no longer teens, and we have a ton of adult listeners. We are going to be more inclusive of the other demographic of listeners that we have here as well...and just continue sharing the heart of what this podcast has always been about. Becoming more than we are and who we were always meant to be. We also talk a bit about the topic "It Didn't Work Out". Tawni shares about her recent divorce and how she has been able to find new perspectives to hold onto as she has hope and faith that even when things don't work out, the best is still yet to come. We will experience many things not working out in this life...but the person who we become because of those disappointing experiences is exactly the person who God wants us to grow to be.
