POPULARITY
Neil Diamond is one of the best-selling singer-songwriters of all time. In August 1972 he performed a series of 10 sold-out shows at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. Recordings from this concert would be released as a live double-album entitled Hot August Night later that year in December. Neil Diamond was born in Brooklyn, New York, the child of a Jewish family. At the age of 16 he was inspired by seeing folk singer Pete Seeger perform at a camp for Jewish children in upstate New York, and received his first guitar shortly thereafter. This would set the direction of Diamond's career, starting with both taking guitar lessons and writing songs. After some time barely scraping by as a songwriter, Diamond began to find some success by the mid-60's, most prominently with several songs for The Monkees, including the big hit, "I'm A Believer." Diamond moved to Los Angeles in 1969, where he recorded some of his bigger solo hits, including the iconic "Sweet Caroline."Many consider "Hot August Night" to be Neil Diamond's best work, capturing the artist at his prime and at the top of his game. It went to number 5 on the Billboard 200 album chart, and was number 12 for the 1973 year-end chart. It was number 1 in Australia for 29 weeks in 1973 and 1974, and remains one of the highest selling albums in that country. Neil Diamond retired from touring in 2018 toward the end of his "50 Year Anniversary World Tour" after being diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. However, Diamond did not retire from music, and continued writing and developing new projects.Wayne brings us this soft rock singer-songwriter live album for this week's podcast. Kentucky WomanThis song is a bonus track on the CD, and many will recognize this song from the remake performed by Deep Purple. It was written in 1967 and went to number 22 on the charts after its release. It appeared on the compilation album, "Neil Diamond's Greatest Hits" released in 1968 on Bang records after Diamond left that label.Cherry CherryThe inspiration for this song was an early relationship with a significantly older woman. This was Diamond's first hit, reaching number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. The most familiar studio version of this song was released in mid 1966 on Bang records, and was the final track on Diamond's debut studio album, "The Feel of Neil Diamond."Song Sung BlueThis song was originally released on Diamond's eighth studio album, "Moods." It was his second number 1 song in the United States, and his last solo #1 song in America to date. The musical inspiration for the song is Mozart's Piano Concerto #21, second movement. The lyrics reflect on the power of music to heal when a sad mood is poured into a song. Cracklin' RosieOriginally released in 1970, this song topped the charts and sold over 1 million copies. The studio version appeared on "Tap Root Manuscript," Diamond's sixth studio album, and was recorded with instrumentation provided by session musicians from the Wrecking Crew. While the lyrics suggest that Rosie is a prostitute, there are tales that it actually refers to a cheap sparkling wine from Canada called "Crackling Rosè." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the animated series "Josie and the Pussycats"The animated series "Josie and the Pussycats" and "Josie and the Pussycats in Outer Space" concluded its run this month. STAFF PICKS:Ventura Highway by AmericaRob leads off the staff picks with a song inspired by a drive that vocalist and writer Dewey Bunnell took in 1963 on the Pacific Coast. While his father was changing a flat tire, he and his brother stood on the side of the road near a road sign for Ventura, watching shapes in the clouds, inspiring the lyrics "alligator lizards in the air."Superstition by Stevie WonderLynch brings us the lead single from Wonder's fifteenth studio album "Talking Book." It's lyrics mention many popular superstitions and their negative consequences. Stevie Wonder collaborated with Jeff Beck on the demo for this song, and Beck would include his version of "Superstition" on his "Beck, Bogert & Appice" album.Rockin' Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu by Johnny RiversBruce features the song originally recorded in 1957 by Huey "Piano" Smith. The original version went to number 52 on the pop charts, but the version we all know went to number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. Rivers was a member of the Wrecking Crew, and several musicians from that session group played on this single. It Never Rains in Southern California by Albert HammondWayne's closes out the staff picks with a storytelling song about a performer off to make it big. He fails in his efforts, but wants to hide the failure from those he left behind. Members of the Wrecking Crew also provide instrumentation on this song that went to number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. NOVELTY TRACK:Crazy Horses by The OsmondsThis surprisingly heavy performance from the Osmonds takes us out for this week. ALBERT HAMMOND LEGENDARY SINGER… PROLIFIC SONGWRITER…MUSICIAN AND RECORD PRODUCER RELEASING NEW ALBUM ENTITLED ‘BODY OF WORK' ZOOM SPECIAL EVENT ON INTERVIEWING THE LEGENDS! Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of Interviewing the Legends I'm your host Ray Shasho. Albert Hammond grew up in Gibraltar. In 1960, Albert left school, formed a band and began sending out recordings of his very first compositions to labels in England, where they were released by Parlophone Records. Soon thereafter, Albert met Mike Hazlewood and almost immediately, they teamed up as collaborators and began gaining recognition as a songwriting team: “Little Arrows” (Leapy Lee in 1968 – top 10 country and pop charts), “Make Me An Island” (a number one hit in 14 countries), “Gimme Dat Ding” (The Pipkins in 1970 – pop and R&B charts), “Freedom Come, Freedom Go” (The Fortunes in 1971), “Good Morning Freedom” (Blue Mink, 1970). “Gimme Dat Ding” was written for a children's television program called “Oliver In The Overworld” which starred Freddie and the Dreamers. Having become one of Britain's most successful songwriting teams, Albert and Mike decided to move to southern California. Albert played his songs to every record company possible, until Hal Landers and Bobby Roberts gave him the first artist's contract ever for their newly built Mums label, a division of CBS's Epic label. After auditioning for CBS president Clive Davis, and over 30 other people, Albert was asked to record some songs. Albert went into the studio to record what would become the It Never Rains In Southern California album. The title song went to number five in the U.S. and became a worldwide success. This offered Albert the opportunity to tour, which led him to almost all continents. Albert went on to record seven English-language albums for the CBS label. Hammond is also known for … "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" by Starship, "One Moment in Time" sung by Whitney Houston, "The Air That I Breathe", a hit for the Hollies, "To All the Girls I've Loved Before", a Julio Iglesias/Willie Nelson duet, and "When I Need You" by Leo Sayer. Scott sits with The Strokes' own Albert Hammond Jr., following the recent release of the guitarist's latest solo album, Melodies on Hiatus. The California-born musician and son of “It Never Rains in Southern California” singer Albert Hammond was one of the first-ever guests on Lipps Service back in 2018. In his second appearance, he talked with Scott about The Strokes' latest tour for its album The New Abnormal, hanging out with Anthony Kiedis, and what it's like living in LA. The two also got into Hammond Jr.'s upbringing and getting into music at a young age, meeting and working with The Cars' Ric Ocasek, and the whole story of him joining The Strokes, including meeting Julian Casablancas in NY and having almost instant chemistry with him. They reflect on The Strokes' 25-plus-year-long career, working with Rick Rubin and other producers, touring, the making of his solo albums, Melodies on Hiatus, and much more. Tune into an insightful and rockin' episode with the one and only, Albert Hammond Jr.

The same happens in trading. Let me explain what I mean right now.Hey traders, Andrew Mitchem here at The Forex Trading Coach with video and podcast number 433.Common phrases and trading ForexI want to talk about a couple of analogies you may have heard of. You've heard the phrase, "It never rains, but it pours." You've heard the phrase, "May hay while the sun shines." They are exactly applicable when it comes to trading. What I mean by that is you have to wait for the right trading conditions. Now as traders sometimes that can be our downfall, and it's a big mistake that so many people make and fall into that trap.Trading becomes boring, and you make mistakesYou see when you're not trading it's pretty much boring. You're not doing anything, and the issue then becomes is you start breaking your rules. You start forcing things to happen that you should really do. You start taking B-grade set ups, simply because you want to take something. It's very hard to force yourself not to do that. But if you can get yourself to trade the conditions of when the high quality trade setups show, you will without doubt do so much better from your trading.2 perfect examples from this week's tradingNow just this week, I've got two perfect examples to share with you. So last night, Thursday night my time, I held our live weekly client's webinar; a two hour live session where we trade live. I trade the European session. The following week Paul Tillman trades the US session and then back to the European session with me the week after. So last night, not a lot happened for the first hour and 50 minutes. Now we were covering previous trades, we were discussing trades that a few people had open and some very good trades. We were showing some good weekly and monthly chart trades. We had lots happening, but nothing really was going on live in the market. Then leading up to the end of the session where we look at the 12 hour and six hour and four hour and two hour charts, we took one six hour chart trade and three on the 12 hour.

Welcome back to It Never Rains! Tyson and Aaron deliver a scintillating review of the 2020 NFL Draft that featured a bevy of Oregon Ducks who had the first step of their professional dreams realized. The Ducks Duo discuss Justin Herbert being selected by the Los Angeles Chargers, and how he figures to fit into the organization that's without former incumbent, Phillip Rivers (3:55). Troy Dye, Shane Lemieux and Jake Hanson were all mid to late-round selections; the guys assess the recent draftees' weaknesses, and project how they will fit into their respective NFL teams (8:30). It's time for everyone's favorite post-draft exercise, another way-too-early mock draft! The 2021 Draft will, seemingly, host a lot of current Oregon names, including a potential top-5 pick in Penei Sewell (17:50). It's been a ride, but episode 40 is the end of the line for season one of the LAFC Season Pass podcast. It's a nice round number, to go with the many that LAFC racked up in 2019, but the final episode may actually be the biggest mess of the bunch. The boys from FC FC, Josh Spice and Slim Koda, will see to that. FC FC, LAFC's sister podcast, is the ying to the yang that is Season Pass. Where Dweezy and Wallerson keep the conversation concise and on the pitch, Dweezy, Spice and Slim talk long and loud about everything LAFC BUT the matches. The resulting combination is a slightly longer pod with way more opinion and topics of mini-conversation. This Season Pass / FC FC crossover showcases the best of the "It Never Rains" podcasts. If you love this show, check FC FC out! If you followed Slim and Spice here from FC FC for the first time, welcome and stick around! On the pod: Lee Nguyen is bound for Inter Miami after being selected in the third round of the Expansion Draft on Tuesday. Where does that leave the LAFC midfield depth? Where can LAFC roster improve in general ahead of a big season in 2020? What are Slim and Spice's favorite on field moments from the 2019 season? Tune in and find out! That'll be it until LAFC training Camp in January; thanks for listening all season! We'll be back and better in season two. L.A. is Black and Gold!

On this week's episode, Becky, Jimmy, and Joel welcome guest Steve Travis, a meteorologist for Accuweather on the show to talk about the recent storms that have impacted the west coast, and lightened California's drought conditions. Steve also talks about what his typical day is like as a weather forecaster vs. what people perceive he does. Show Notes! Topic 1: West Coast Storms rain and snowfall. How have they affected California's Drought? Five feet of snow and counting — California fire hose continues through the weekend Seven feet of snow in seven days, and the California ski resorts are rejoicing The drought is over in Northern California after up to 20 inches of rain and 12 feet of snow After 'pretty extraordinary' snowfall, Sierra Nevada braces for another battering from atmospheric river An example of how rainfall has impaxted lake levels. A before and after picture of Lake Oroville from January 2016 to January 2017. Topic 2: Perceptions vs Reality: What does a meteorologist actually do, vs. what do people think they do? This week's outro music was "It Never Rains in Southern California" by Albert Hammond.
This week on StoryWeb: Ann McGovern’s spooky story “The Velvet Ribbon.” Like many pre-teens and teens, I played the same records over and over and over again. My poor mother! When I was ten, she had to listen repeatedly to The Beatles’ 1970 collection, The Beatles Again, – and in later years, she was subjected to endless repeats of The Best of Bread, Eric Carmen’s self-titled album, Elton John’s Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt County, and perhaps the album that sticks in her mind most notably, Albert Hammond’s It Never Rains in Southern California. But one recording that still haunts her, I am sure, is “The Velvet Ribbon.” This spoken word track was part of a 1970 Scholastic record, The Haunted House and Other Spooky Poems and Tales. Read by Carole Danell, this version of “The Velvet Ribbon” was written by Ann McGovern. Like “Bloody Mary” or “Hook Hand” or “The Ghostly Hitchhiker,” it’s an oft-told tale with many variations, especially in the color of the ribbon. Black? Red? Green? It doesn’t really matter: the outcome is the same for the woman every time. She warns her new husband that he must never remove the velvet ribbon from around her neck. But does he listen? Of course not! When the disastrous result occurs in Ann McGovern’s version, the woman wails, “I told you you’d be sorry!” Danell’s narration is powerful and chilling. I loved that line so much – “I told you you’d be sorry” – that I played it constantly. Curious about the origins of this frequently told tale, I did some research (of course!). Many commentators believe that the tale started during the French Revolution. A notable written version of the tale is Washington Irving’s 1824 short story, “The Adventure of the German Student,” which indeed is set in Paris during the French Revolution. Why the French Revolution? Well, there were many beheadings: heads did roll! (Listen to the story, and you’ll see the connection!) And according to one website, “some analysts have noted the French Revolution-era tradition for the widows and widowers of those killed by the guillotine to wear red ribbons and scarves around their necks.” The history of choker necklaces is also fascinating. The StartUp Fashion website provides an interesting overview of the role choker necklaces have played in Native American, East African, and European traditions. In Europe as time went along, a black ribbon tied around the neck was often a signal that the woman wearing the ribbon was a prostitute. Buzzfeed’s article “The Secret (and Not So Secret) History of Choker Necklaces” notes that chokers were also popular in Chinese, Indian, and Egyptian cultures – and the article includes many images of choker necklaces through the ages right up to the present time. If you grew up in the 1970s and want to rekindle your love of Scholastic books and records, you can buy a used copy of the Scholastic record at Discogs. A used copy of the accompanying paperback is available through Amazon. Visit thestoryweb.com/mcgovern for links to all these resources and to listen to the 1970 Scholastic recording of “The Velvet Ribbon,” written by Ann McGovern and read by Carole Danell. You can follow along with the text at the Dreadful Dreary website. As you get ready for all the ghosts and goblins tonight, you might want to take a listen again to last year’s spooky offering: Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart.” Visit the storyweb.com/poe to learn about the story and to hear me read it in its entirety. Happy Halloween!

Episode 32: "It Never Rains in Southern California"... at least, according to Gary's weather report, discussing the drought conditions he has witnessed since moving to S.Cal two years ago. But Gary is really enjoying living in California, and he discusses a few of the very nice experiences he has had since moving there. Gary then tells Gene about meeting Ossie (she's one of the yahoo DU group moderators) while on a trip to Denver, and also meeting up with her fellow moderator Lyn while there. (Gary also tells of meeting the DU group's third mod, Marcy, in Chicago a few weeks back... making it a trifecta of mod meets!) Gary talks about his new trip to Europe, including some of the new destinations he'll be visiting there. Gary and Gene talk a bit about Gary's upcoming group cruise, this time to Mexico in April 2010. There's also some quick mention about our buddy Mikey (from the yahoo DU group) who Gary just saw in person recently, and who does a very funny "impersonation" of Gary in a YouTube video clip. Then... it's time for "Questions for Gary!" First up: since everything we experience is "scripted", does it actually do any good to pray for someone or something? Second question is from a listener in Austin, Texas (where Gary has visited several times), who asks about the nature of Heaven. What is it really like when we join with God for good? Both of these questions are answered and discussed at great length, with many references to Course teachings - as well as explaining the true nature of Gary's teachers, Arten and Pursah. Gary closes out this episode with his thoughts on why everything happens when it happens -- or more correctly, "seems" to happen.
