Sedro-Woolley has long held a very special place in my heart as a 12-year resident of the Magic Skagit. My very first impression of the town was that it had seen better times, but as I got to know it better over the years I came to appreciate its grit and resilience. One person who understands those civic attributes far better than me is its mayor, the Honorable Julia Johnson — and in this Tales of the Magic Skagit episode I have the pleasure of speaking with Mayor Johnson about her Sedro-Woolley story, how she learned its history growing up, and how she sees its future. There's a lot going on in the “Gateway to the North Cascades,” and listening to this podcast you'll come away with not only a sense of the town's dynamism, but also Mayor Johnson's aspirations for the place she left at various points in her interesting life, but always chose to return to.Here's to the 3 1/2 percent! You'll understand that statement by the time you reach the end of this chat with Sedro-Woolley's mayor, Julia Johnson.

Georgia's U.S. Senate runoff election is about two things, Sen. Raphael Warnock told supporters Saturday in Woodstock: competency and character. Warnock, the Democratic senator in a bid for reelection against Republican challenger and former University of Georgia football player Herschel Walker, made a stop outside Allen Temple AME Church during his runoff bus tour. A spokesperson for the Warnock campaign said about 300 people were in attendance at the event. He urged attendees to tell family and friends to vote, saying, “tell them there's too much on the line to stay home. tell them there's too much at stake... and the differences between me and my opponent are too wide.” Georgia's runoff election could determine which party controls the U.S. Senate. The Ebenezer Baptist Church pastor criticized his opponent, who he said had been dishonest about his credentials, claims to have worked with law enforcement and that he graduated from the University of Georgia. The senator touted his record, including sponsoring legislation to cap the costs of insulin for Medicare patients. Warnock told supporters he has a history of working across the aisle with Republican lawmakers, including Senator Ted Cruz, who was in Canton nine days before to stump for Walker. Walker pointed to the infrastructure bill, the PACT Act for veterans, and bills on gun control, maternal mortality, agriculture and making railway crossings safer as results of his bipartisan work. Officials from Keep Georgia Beautiful and Keep America Beautiful, Inc., recently welcomed Cherokee County to its expanding community-based Network of Affiliates with the certification of “Keep Cherokee Beautiful.” After a year of preparation, KCB finalized its affiliate certification at a recognition ceremony Tuesday at the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners work session. The affiliation process included the formation of a community team, attendance to numerous training events and the development of an action plan. In attaining the certification, Keep Cherokee Beautiful joins more than 70 local affiliates across Georgia. In addition, KCB will join more than 700 KAB affiliates, including 26 state affiliates, and several international affiliates. Currently, Keep Cherokee Beautiful works to reduce littering through programs like “Adopt-a-Mile,” community cleanups and supporting electronics recycling events, as well as providing recycling education through the organization's monthly electronic newsletter. In addition to receiving its program affiliation, KCB also recognized several members with awards that included Lisa Johnson who received the Outstanding Volunteer award, as well as the BridgeMill Homeowners Association, which received the award for Outstanding Adopt-A-Mile Partner. More information can be found at Cherokee GA dot Com. A family near Ball Ground has been displaced after their home was destroyed in a fire Saturday night. According to Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services, firefighters and Cherokee Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a residential structure fire fire at 10:40 p.m. Saturday on Fletcher Drive near Conns Creek Road. Firefighters found a home with significant fire involvement, and deployed hose lines to begin extinguishing it while ensuring all occupants were out of the home, the fire department reported. Due to the location of the closest fire hydrant, crews had to shuttle water to the scene using multiple fire engines. Fletcher Drive was shut down while crews responded to the fire. The structure, destroyed in the fire, was a home to five residents. One of those residents reported injuries and was assessed by Cherokee Fire personnel but refused transport to the hospital. The American Red Cross was contacted to assist the family with resources. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.   Developers applying to the city of Canton for annexations, rezonings or anything else that requires a public hearing for residential developments will have to wait a year before they can go to the city council. The Canton City Council unanimously approved an abeyance on applications for public hearings Thursday related to residential projects for a period of 12 months, effective immediately. An abeyance refers to a suspension of a process. This would not affect residential projects that are already approved or in development, were already scheduled to appear before the city council prior to the approval of the abeyance, or public hearings for proposed commercial developments. The city is also reaching the midpoint of the comprehensive planning cycle through the state of Georgia. During this part of the comprehensive plan, the city has an opportunity to adopt a short-term work plan and five-year update to the plan, set to expire in 2028.    The River Ridge girls basketball team started its season 1-0 on Thursday night, beating county rival Cherokee 64-38 at home. Kayla Cleaveland paced the Lady Knights' offense with a game-high 20 points, starting her sophomore season out strong. Sophia Pearl, also just a sophomore, was the second-leading scorer with 16 points, followed by Mataya Gayle with 15 points. Cleaveland dominated the second quarter, scoring 10 of her 10 points in the frame. Pearl took over late, tallying 12 of her points in the fourth quarter, including two 3-pointers. River Ridge started the season ranked No. 1 in the GHSA poll for Class AAAAAA, and in beating Cherokee, it knocked off the No. 8-ranked team in Class AAAAAAA. The Lady Warriors started their season 1-0, but fell even at 1-1 on Thursday. Standout junior Toni Warren scored a team-best nine points, followed by Hannah Harris with six points. Riley Simmons pitched in five points and Madison Moody finished with four. Harris was especially active in the first half to help keep Cherokee in the game, with Warren picking her offense up in the third quarter. Both teams are back in action on Saturday, with River Ridge matching up with Carver, and Cherokee looking to get back in the win column against Lumpkin County.   Ferst Readers of Cherokee County can provide books to more than 130 children in the county for a year thanks to a donation from the Towne Lake Rotary Club Foundation. Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss solar eclipses, some of life's most extraordinary moments, when day becomes night and the stars come out before day returns either all too soon or not soon enough, depending on what you understand to be happening. In ancient China, for example, there was a story that a dragon was eating the sun and it had to be scared away by banging pots and pans if the sun were to return. Total lunar eclipses are more frequent and last longer, with a blood moon coloured red like a sunrise or sunset. Both events have created the chance for scientists to learn something remarkable, from the speed of light, to the width of the Atlantic, to the roundness of Earth, to discovering helium and proving Einstein's Theory of General Relativity. After childhood diabetes, a double organ transplant, triple cardiac bypass, & thyroidectomy, Julia decided to reclaim her health and began a fitness journey at age 62. By age 64 she was on the stage at an NPC Masters Bodybuilding competition for women 55+ in age, and she won. It was a way to celebrate 30 years since her organ transplant that cured the diabetes. Julia is an artist and teacher who has been on the faculties of universities in San Francisco, Saudi Arabia and Mexico. She believes in empowering other women her age with her story that it is never too late and you are never too old to get fit, feel amazing and look healthy and vibrant. “She looked at me and then she unbuttoned her little nurse uniform to about here and opened it up. She had this like scar. She's like, I've had a bypass. It's not that big a deal. And I'm like, if she can do it. Some local organizers criticized the city for not alerting caretakers of the community space.--Tiffany Bui reports:On Thursday  morning, neighbors near George Floyd Square awoke to find that city workers had removed the concrete barriers that blocked off 38th and Chicago. Afterwards, volunteers arrived to hand out food, replant flowers and put up makeshift barriers.Julia Johnson says though the concrete barriers provided a sense of security for the square, she believes the community would be able to fill that gap.“I have faith in my community that … if another drop of blood is spilled, if one more person from our community is stolen from us, that we will erect another George Floyd square,” said Johnson. City officials say this is the first phase of a three year plan. The plan includes building a roundabout encircling the statue of a fist at the heart of the square and investing in other projects in the neighborhood. Officials partnered with the Agape Movement, a group which seeks to connect law enforcement and community members. Group leader Steve Floyd, no relation to George Floyd, said at a city press conference that Agape wanted to reopen the square for businesses and to prevent shootings.“The building that's across the street from Cup Foods - we got African American men... looking to purchase that building,” said Floyd. “So all up and down that block is Black businesses, and basically through the shutdown, they were the ones being oppressed.”Some speakers at George Floyd Square pushed back against the reopening. They say the city failed to communicate with those who regularly take care of the memorial. Vine Adams says the city's action left her heartbroken and mad.“For all the people who came to the square, who cried, who celebrated, who danced - did you do it for a roundabout?” Adams asked the crowd. “Did you do it for somebody to tell you when we done, when we finished, when we done grieving?” Mayor Jacob Frey said officials didn't expect to complete reopening the square Thursday, but they are continuing efforts to fully open the intersection to vehicle traffic.

Welcome to Campfire Classics, a Literary Comedy Podcast!! If it's Tuesday it must be...Munich? This week, you'll be delighted to learn that Heather is going to attempt her German accent again.  Do you think it will be better than last time?  You'll have to listen to find out.  The story is from horror legend Bram Stoker, and in fact was first written to be part of his most famous book Dracula.  The story is called "Dracula's Guest". As we work through the story, we address some important issues.  Like the value of theatre critics, what is the best transition music, and dyslexia 2.0. "Dracula's Guest" was first published in 1914, 2 years after Stoker's death, as part of the collection Dracula's Guest and Other Weird Stories. But today, we're reading it out of the book Classic Horror Tales sent to us from Foggy Pine Books.  Visit them at www.foggypinebooks.com. In Our Time: Science

Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss solar eclipses, some of life’s most extraordinary moments, when day becomes night and the stars come out before day returns either all too soon or not soon enough, depending on what you understand to be happening. In ancient China, for example, there was a story that a dragon was eating the sun and it had to be scared away by banging pots and pans if the sun were to return. Total lunar eclipses are more frequent and last longer, with a blood moon coloured red like a sunrise or sunset. Both events have created the chance for scientists to learn something remarkable, from the speed of light, to the width of the Atlantic, to the roundness of Earth, to discovering helium and proving Einstein’s Theory of General Relativity. Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the planet Venus which is both the morning star and the evening star, rotates backwards at walking speed and has a day which is longer than its year. It has long been called Earth’s twin, yet the differences are more striking than the similarities. Once imagined covered with steaming jungles and oceans, we now know the surface of Venus is 450 degrees celsius, and the pressure there is 90 times greater than on Earth, enough to crush an astronaut. The more we learn of it, though, the more we learn of our own planet, such as whether Earth could become more like Venus in some ways, over time. Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss why, in 1870, the Vatican Council issued the decree ‘pastor aeternus’ which, among other areas, affirmed papal infallibility. It meant effectively that the Pope could not err in his teachings, an assertion with its roots in the early Church when the bishop of Rome advanced to being the first among equals, then overall head of the Christian Church in the West. The idea that the Pope could not err had been a double-edged sword from the Middle Ages, though; while it apparently conveyed great power, it also meant a Pope was constrained by whatever a predecessor had said. If a later Pope were to contradict an earlier Pope, then one of them must be wrong, and how could that be…if both were infallible? Everyone loves a good ghost story whether to try and debunk the paranormal, persuade a non-believer, or encourage discussion on the afterlife. For me ghost stories take me back to Cub Scout campfires and sleepovers with torches. Phil Spencer's Hooting and Howling captures this essence of story telling in a delightful and highly entertaining manner as he recounts his own experience of hunting down a ghost, complete with spooky torch light. Performing at The Butterfly Club on a bare stage, Phil conjures up an atmospheric world of senses through words alone, taking us to another time. The story is complemented by the enchanting Julia Johnson, whose soulful voice added an ethereal layer and depth to the performance. Her skill with the banjo enhances the humour and tone of the different plot points. Breaking up the story with song gives the audience time to absorb the content and consider their own opinions. Combining storytelling and stand up comedy conventions, Phil leads us on a journey to cockatoo island in Sydney on a ghost hunt. the simplicity of the plot was created into a spellbinding tale of the different people he met, the emotions he felt, and mundane aspects worthy of inspection. His talent with different impersonations is impressive, transporting the viewer to Cockatoo Island to soak in the atmosphere and Phil's perspective of that night. As the telling continues, Phil has moments of self-awareness and introspection which increases our relationship with him. While predominantly a comedy, Phil intertwines beautiful philosophical thoughts we have all had in the past - such as "What happens after death?" - and in doing so confronts the loss of someone dear to him. This added meaning to an otherwise playful sketch. Overall, Hooting & Howling is a piece that made me happy in a quiet and thoughtful way, something that is overlooked in our crazy world. It had strength in the straightforwardness of the telling and Phil's effervescent stage persona breathed life and depth into creating the world. Hooting & Howling is playing at the Butterfly club until Monday 25th so don't miss it! I would highly recommend for an enjoyable and fun evening out.   By Samara Barr

Be Frank with Me (William Morrow & Company)Be Frank with Me, with its eccentric characters in self-imposed isolation, their grand but sometimes misunderstood gestures, and idiosyncratic approach to coping with the ordinary world, captures the intensity of growing up just a little bit different than everybody else. Or, in Frank’s case, a lot different from everybody else. Already called “magnificently poignant, funny, and wholly original” (Library Journal), Kirkus summed it up as “the curious case of where’d you go, Salinger.” It’s a spot-on description, as Be Frank with Me has the poignant quirks of Haddon, the effervescent spirit of Semple and, at its center, a Salingeresque reclusive literary legend. That legend is the enigmatic M.M. “Mimi” Banning, holed up in her Bel Air mansion for the quarter-century since her classic but still-best-selling first novel’s publication. Broke after losing her savings in a Ponzi scheme, Mimi now must write her long-awaited second book. To ensure the timely delivery of her long-anticipated manuscript, her New York publisher sends an assistant to monitor her progress. The prickly Mimi outlines the parametes for an acceptable assistant: No Ivy-Leaguers or English majors. Must drive, cook, tidy. Computer whiz. Good with kids. Quiet, discreet, sane. When Alice Whitley arrives at the Banning mansion, she’s put to work right away—as a full-time companion to Mimi’s son, Frank. The kid, Alice discovers, sees world in a very different—but completely fascinating—way. With little to entertain them but the sound of Mimi typing behind closed doors, Alice and her eccentric companion decide to embark on a series of giddy adventures in the greater world of Los Angeles. To occupy her imagination her downtime, Alice becomes consumed with finding out who Frank’s father is, how his gorgeous “piano teacher and itinerant male role model” Xander fits into the Banning family equation—and whether Mimi will ever finish that book.Full of heart and countless “only-in-Hollywood” moments, but with a deep ring of truth, Be Frank with Me is a captivating and unconventional story of an unusual mother and son, and the intrepid young woman who finds herself irresistibly pulled into their unforgettable world.Praise for Be Frank with Me“Johnson’s magnificently poignant, funny, and wholly original debut goes beyond page-turner status. Readers will race to the next sentence. And the next. Her charming, flawed, quietly courageous characters, each wonderfully different, demand a second reading while we impatiently await the author’s second work.” —Library Journal (starred review)“Witty dialogue, irresistible characters, and a touch of mystery make this sweet debut about a quirky Hollywood family an enjoyable page-turner.” —Booklist“The curious incident of where’d you go, Salinger: clever, sweet.”—Kirkus Reviews“What a charmer this book is! From the very first page, I fell hard for Frank, an adorable oddball with anamazing brain, a wardrobe to die for, and a lonely fragility that pierced my heart again and again. When I finished, I wished him and his makeshift, off-beat family well—and immediately began missing him.”—Marisa de los Santos, New York Times-bestselling author of Love Walked In and The Precious One“There’s so much to love about this novel: the hilarious one-liners, the unforgettable characters, the unexpected moments of tenderness and all the funny, sad, poignant twists and turns this story takes. I lost myself in these pages and you will too.”—John Searles, nationally-bestselling author of Help for the Haunted“Beautifully written, brimming with insight, mystery, and benevolent wit, Julia Johnson had me gripped from the first chapter to the final page of Be Frank with Me.”—Julia Sweeney, author, actress, comedienne“Be Frank with Me is complex, nuanced, detailed and profound. In other words, funny, in the best, most resonant way. Read it with both eyes because it will delight both the thinky and the feely parts of your brain.” —Dave Foley, comedian and, technically, an actor“Julia Claiborne Johnson has written an effervescent gem of a novel, expertly balancing on a literary tightrope between lighthearted and heartbreaking. Be Frank with Me is peopled by characters at once utterly unique, and entirely authentic. I may re-read this book just to spend more time with Frank.” —Laura Nicole Diamond, author of Shelter Us“BE FRANK WITH ME is that rare, hits-me-just-right book I am always hoping to find when browsing: Witty, but never cutesy. Deeply felt, but never sentimental. Peopled with deeply flawed, fully realized characters I cared about. It pulled me in so strongly that I found myself reading in that whole body way that is a rare and luminous pleasure after childhood, so immersed that the phone and the dogs and the kids had to work to pull me out. I loved every minute I spent in Julia Claiborne Johnson’s glass house with her cast of dedicated stone-throwers. This one is special—don’t miss it.”—Joshilyn Jackson, New York Times-bestselling author of The Opposite of Everyone“Julia Claiborne Johnson has struck gold in creating Frank Banning—a one-of-a-kind exasperating, witty and endearing nine-year-old genius who functions as the beating heart of this marvelous book.”—Julie Schumacher, author of Dear Committee MembersJulia Claiborne Johnson worked at Mademoiselle and Glamour magazines before marrying and moving to Los Angeles, where she lives with her comedy-writer husband and their two children.

There is word on the page and then there is word given breath. This past April, students and faculty from the University of Kentucky brought words to life thanks to a 12-hour open air poetry reading. The event, organized by English professor and published author Julia Johnson, was held outside of the Student Center welcoming anyone and everyone to come read their favorite poems aloud. The reading itself was held in celebration of National Poetry Month and to raise awareness of UK's growing creative writing community. In this podcast, we sit down with Professor Julia Johnson who talks about her motivations behind holding the reading and how she hopes the event will help build an even stronger sense of community between the university's creative writers and faculty. Also joining are English department graduate students and editors at UK's literary journal Limestone, Jenna Goldsmith and Robin Rahija who give their thoughts on the poetry reading, Limestone, and the impact of hearing a few beautiful words each day. Finally, we hear a few of those beautiful words from a UK student and from WRD professor Steven Alvarez who reads a poem of his own.
