Appalachian State University professor Michael Krenn's 1999 nonfiction novel “Black Diplomacy” is the inspiration for a recent documentary. According to The Appalachian Online, the book describes the accomplishments of Edward Dudley, Terence Todman, and Carl Rowan, who were three important African American ambassadors of the 1900s. The documentary itself is titled “The American Diplomat” and started production in 2014 after director Leola Calzolai-Stewart read about the ambassador's history. After calling up Professor Krenn, she decided that both the author and the book would be great wells of knowledge to pull from. After having been screened at the JFK Presidential Library, “The American Diplomat” is scheduled to be screened on campus at Room 420 in Plemmons Student Union at 6PM on Feb. 22. The Watauga Democrat states that The Appalachian Theatre of the High Country has formally announced that it has hit its funding campaign of $10 million. Officially funded as of December 31, 2021, the theatre now has the means to finish the construction that it proposed a decade before. Appalachian Theatre of the High Country chairman Keith Martin is on record stating that the accomplishment is “wonderful” and everyone involved is “extremely grateful” for the “generosity” of the community. The Wall Street Journal reports that many companies are taking different means in order to keep employees in important manufacturing positions. One of these methods is switching from annual pay raise reviews to more recurrent reviews, such as every quarter. This is apparently the case in order to “compete for talent and keep pace with rising wages”. Company officials state that the pandemic has caused the economy to “bounce” back and forth, creating a quickly-evolving market that is currently seeing rising hiring costs. Today's weather is brought to us by Booneweather.com. This Thursday morning you can expect some wet weather. The blockage of Egypt's Suez Canal in March shone renewed focus on just how many goods are shipped around the world and how fragile those routes can be. Given the shipping industry's importance in the U.S., American planners must have world-class tools to prevent a comparable disaster from congesting American waterways. ERDC has operated a ship simulator for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers since the late 1980s to model the maneuverability of large ships through our nation's ports and harbors. Benefitting from ERDC's superior numerical modeling expertise, the simulator simulates how vessels respond to a variety of environmental forces. It gives planners the ability to see potential problems in a virtual environment, modify designs and retest to come up with the best plans for a given port. Given its years of success in simulating our nation's waterways, the versatile simulator is now being used by the military to plan and train for amphibious operations around the world. We are joined by Dr. Keith Martin, a research physicist at ERDC's Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory and lead of the Ship Simulator program, to talk about how ERDC is enabling safer waterways, better and more efficient port designs, and better military operations planning. We discuss ERDC's unique capabilities in ship simulation (8:48), how this technology is being used for both civil works (7:06) and military projects (12:05), how ship simulation can benefit the military (12:48), how it is being paired with ERDC's ground vehicle simulation technology (16:59), and the expertise ERDC offers (24:02). We also talk about a successful feasibility study involving the port of Long Beach, in which ERDC's ship simulator was able to identify design flaws and rapidly enable new safer designs (24:39). ERDC is offering a special webinar on June 23 for members of the U.S. military to learn more about the ship simulator's capabilities to solve tough challenges. He headed the group at Norton Rose that helped give birth to the independent power industry by litigating against utilities in twenty states to open markets. Norton Rose has worked through two main periods of growth in renewables. From 1978-85 the US congress encouraged renewables by offering tax credits but they didn't get much traction and people lost interest. After interest started reviving in the early 1990s, the tax credits were restored and have been working more effectively.  The Biden administration and clean energy Keith states that the high expectations for renewable energy are justified in the new presidential administration. President Biden has already taken steps to help in administrative ways. For example, he just announced the first construction permit for offshore wind. He's also encouraging companies to report on the effect of climate change on their business models. All eyes will be on him to see what he has planned for financial incentives in renewable energy projects. The new administration is also accelerating the response to climate change. Solar, wind, and storage are the greatest focus of new capacity additions. Interest in energy storage has increased to the point of being included in virtually every utility-scale solar project being bid on, giving it the potential to be the most significant change within clean energy's immediate future. Expanding the tax credit will help further this progres, as Commercial and Industrial companies are eyeing hundreds of distributed energy projects but needs that extra help to make them financially viable. The movement towards carbon capture Up until this point, the primary options to decarbonize were to reduce consumption or switch to clean energy. Now, however, companies with large carbon footprints are stampeding toward investing in carbon capture. This interest is being driven by the section 45Q tax credit. Currently, the progress of the tax credit is stalled because the IRS needs to clarify some details and there are many questions to be resolved. Meanwhile, companies are still working in expectation of the tax credit. Elon Musk is even offering a prize to whoever can create a new technology for carbon capture.  Resources & People Mentioned Currents podcast | Norton Rose Fulbright Elon Musk carbon capture prize Jigar Shaw CERAWeek by IHS Markit | The World's Premier Energy Event Project Finance NewsWire: published every other month and dates back to 23 years. The Project Finance NewsWire reports on new developments affecting the power sector, gas pipelines, LNG terminals, energy storage facilities, energy efficiency, biofuels, gasification, water, toll roads, bridges, ports, stadiums and other infrastructure. Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. By the time we reach the age of 80, around 15 per cent of us will have glaucoma. By using gene therapy, University of Melbourne ophthalmology professor, Keith Martin, and his team are aiming to encourage the cells that connect the eye to the brain to make new photoreceptors that pick up light, replacing those that have been lost. “The cells I'm most interested in glaucoma are called retinal ganglion cells and these are the cells that connect the eye to the brain,” says Professor Martin. “When light hits the eye, photoreceptors pick up that light and they signal through to these retinal ganglion cells that send the messages back to our brain. If we lose that cable that connects the eye to the brain, the picture quality degrades.” These days, if glaucoma is identified early - it can be effectively treated in most cases. But Professor Martin's research goes a step further. “We're moving beyond the era where all we could do for this chronic degenerative disease was slow things down, and we're now really talking about restoring function in a realistic way.” Episode recorded: April 10, 2019. This week on The Farm Report, host Erin Fairbanks kicks off a multi-part series on the lamb and sheep industry, first welcoming John Wilkes, a US based livestock consultant, writer and speaker with a background as a UK sheep and beef producer and farmer to the program. Opening the show with a brief history of the sheep’s rise and fall, John explains the significance of sheep in the histories of both the United States and United Kingdom, as well as around the world. John also explains some basic terminology, talking the differences between lamb and sheep, the true definition of mutton, along with the differences between wool and meat breeds. After the break, Erin is joined by Keith Martin of Pure Bred Lamb and Elysian Fields Sheep Farm. Located on 200 acres of farmland in Greene County, Pennsylvania, Keith is the supplier of sheep to notable chefs, like Thomas Keller. Due to observing the natural lifecycle of sheep flocks and thus changing his initial style of farming, Keith goes into detail about his patented system, Safe Alternative, that describes this manner in which his sheep are raised. Tune in for an info-packed episode, ewe won’t be disappointed! This program was brought to you by Heritage Foods USA. “In histories of both countries (US & UK) sheep have played a major part.” [6:57] “Lamb is an animal that doesn’t see its first birthday… which means that they are killed at their prime when the meat is at its best. ” [11:20] — John Wilkes on The Farm Report “I had to make a change… I looked around me at that time and to those that I respected most… and they were all farmers.” [23:09] “I began to notice, through observation, what their needs were. We call that today ‘the voice of the lamb.'” [27:52] — Keith Martin on The Farm Report
