We've talked before about the difference between aesthetic-driven genres, like sci-fi and fantasy, and structure-driven genres, like mystery and romance. So what happens when you want to build a world just ripe for all your favorite romance tropes? How can your world create the obstacles to your characters getting their happy-ever-after? Guest Gwenda Bond joins us to talk about the love of worldbuilding and worldbuilding for love! A lot of writing romance means dealing with reader's expectations in a slightly different way than some other story-types. How useful are the sub-genre distinctions that might shape those expectations -- fantasy romance, romantic fantasy, fantasy with romance, romantasy, paranormal romance -- from the writer's perspective? And why are some SFF readers still worried that sex and romance might get cooties on their genre? In this episode, we look at how romance can hybridize with so many different forms and flavors of fantasy writing, and what choices writers make when directing the reader's attention more towards the romance or more towards the fantasy. Sidebar: It's Hugo Award nomination season! If you're a nominating sort of person and you enjoyed the podcast in 2023, we'd love your consideration for Best Fancast. [Transcript TK] Our Guest: Gwenda Bond is the New York Times bestselling author of many novels, including the first official Stranger Things novel, Suspicious Minds, the Lois Lane YA series, and the romantic comedies Not Your Average Hot Guy, The Date from Hell, and Mr. & Mrs. Witch. She has a number of forthcoming projects, including a magical art heist book, The Frame-Up. Her nonfiction writing has appeared in Publishers Weekly, Locus Magazine, Salon, the Los Angeles Times, and many other publications. This week on my podcast, I read my Locus Magazine column “Don’t Be Evil,” about the microeconomics and moral injury of enshittification. For Christopher Rowe, author of The Navigating Fox, writing prompts can help him generate work when he's feeling stuck. In fact, one of his first stories to be widely published, translated into a dozen different languages, and reviewed in The New York Times was based on a writing prompt.Christopher's favorite prompt will challenge you to rethink some of the decisions you've already made in a piece of writing. "Because I think that if you're going to write from a prompt at all, in any circumstance," he says, "you should just go with it.... If you're going to trust the prompt, you have to trust yourself to work with it."About Christopher RoweChristopher Rowe's stories have been published, reprinted, and translated around the world, and he has been a finalist for many internationally recognized awards. His most recent book is a novella from Tordotcom Publishing, The Navigating Fox, which received a starred review in Publishers Weekly. Locus Magazine said that Rowe's stories are “as smooth and heady as good Kentucky bourbon.”

Ymir by Rich Larson, was one of our favorite science fiction books we read in the summer of 2022. Locus Magazine wrote glowingly of Rich: "If one tried to engineer a young writer who would embody all the core values, tactics, and ambiance of Classic SF while still conveying ultra-contemporary attitudes, ambiance, and affect, one could hardly produce a better candidate than Rich Larson"Rich was born in Niger and has lived in Grand Prairie, Alberta in Canada, Spain and the Czech Republic. Rich considers himself to be a speculative fiction author. He has written over 200 short stories and 2 novels Ymir and Annex, as well as the collection Tomorrow Factory.  His short story “Ice” was adapted into an Emmy-winning episode of LOVE DEATH + ROBOTS (available on Netflix).Ymir (published by Orbit Books) is imaginative and compelling. It's a far future story of a despised prodigal returning to his icy home world of Ymir to track down a sapient war machine, break a mining strike and to confront the last person he ever wanted to see again—the brother who sent him off in pieces twenty years ago. By the way, when you check out the marketing it calls the novel a "retelling of Beowulf".  Rich told us prior to recording that his publisher asked him what his next novel will be and he quickly replied "Beowulf in space" and it stuck with them. There is absolutely no need to read or refresh yourself on Beowulf. Well, just remember that Grendel is a monster  (Also a terrific novel by John Gardner and an excellent restaurant and bar in Cambridge, MA!)And for those who don't want to jump into a new series, Ymir is a stand-alone novel. We think it will make a breathtaking film one day. This week, in our more-or-less annual discussion of the Locus Recommended Reading List, we are delighted to be joined by Locus Editor-in-Chief Liza Groen Trombi. We talk about the purpose of the list, how it has changed over the years, how books or stories get on the list, and a few thorny questions about how to decide whether a novel is SF or fantasy if it contains substantial elements of both. In addition to mentioning some of our own favourite works of the year, we touch upon the importance of the First Novels list, which might be a harbinger of what's to come, and how story collections and YA novels have grown in importance over the years. Toward the end, we pay a brief tribute to two Locus Magazine pioneers, reviewer Faren Miller (who was also the magazine's first full-time employee), and bibliographer William G. Contento, who helped establish resources that remain crucial to anyone interested in the SFF field.

John Evans was one of Howard Browne's many pseudonyms Even during his lifetime, Howard Browne (1908-1999) was not well known outside of his given fields. His novels, including his best detective fiction, were written under pseudonyms, and his work as editor and Hollywood writer, through credited, remained mostly unknown, except by those in the business. During his long lifetime Browne published hundreds of stories in science fiction and detective magazines, along with several novels. He wrote dozens of television shows including Mission Impossible, Run for Your Life, Maverick and Cheyenne, and three of his film scripts were produced: Portrait of a Mobster with Vic Morrow; The St. Valentine's Day Massacre with Jason Robards and George Segal; and Capone, starring Ben Gazzara. He also wrote radio scripts in the late 1940s. His day job, before he went to Hollywood, was as an associate editor under Ray Palmer and then editor for Ziff-Davis pulp magazines, which included Amazing Stories, Fantastic Adventures and other lesser known fiction magazines. Richard A. Lupoff interviewed Howard Browne at Browne's home in Southern California some time in the mid 1980s (the cassettes aren't labeled). This was Browne's only radio interview, and only the second extant interview on record (the other appeared in Locus Magazine). After he retired, Howard Browne taught a couple of college classes and worked on a big Chicago novel that never saw publication. Most of his work is out of print today, though his four noir novels, in the style of Raymond Chandler and featuring a detective named Paul Pine, are available in a small press edition published this past spring by Haffner Press, with an introduction by Richard A. Lupoff. If you go to Imdb, you'll find a long list of his television shows, many of which can be found streaming. Curiously, his novel Thin Air formed the basis for his first television credit, on the show Climax in 1955, and his last, for an episode of Simon and Simon in 1982. Thin Air was also the basis for an episode on yet a third program, The Rockford Files. Two minor points: Browne says he never wrote for Hawaiian Eye, yet IMDb claims he wrote an episode, and he says he retired in 1973 but his credits extend to 1975. The interview has now been remastered and re-edited, and is presented for the first time in thirty years. Feedback on this and other podcasts is appreciated. You can write to bookwaves@hotmail.com. The book Good Omens is a Black Mass Appeal host favorite, so on this episode we discuss the story of demon Crowley and angel Aziraphale doing their damnedest (and blessedest) to track down a misplaced Antichrist and stop the end of the world. Also, archaeologists cash out a 40 year old myth about Satanic coinage, and we prep for Satanic San Francisco's own night at the museum.
