This episode of #ITWWSS appears on other streaming services as S3 E10. I'm sharing my podcasts here in chronological order. Happy Listening! The Best D**n Live (Acoustic) Performances I’ve Seen And Heard (Part 5) Includes stories about seeing… Groucho Marx, Woody Allen, Jim Croce, Andres Segovia, Rod Stewart and Ron Wood, Counting Crows, Eagles and more. Live acoustic performances from Lyle Lovett, Shawn Colvin, Jim Messina, Sons Of Champlin, Eagles, Sheryl Crow, Fleetwood Mac, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, The Rolling Stones, Counting Crows, Rod Stewart with Ron Wood, and Rickie Lee Jones. With studio recordings from Jim Croce, Andres Segovia and The Doobie Brothers. I would be remiss if I didn’t include music from artists like Segovia. I watched him perform at the University of Southern California (USC) as part of a Master Class in the early 80’s. At the time, I was taking classical guitar classes at Los Angeles Valley College. My instructor invited the class to be part of the audience at USC. It’s a memory one doesn’t forget! Segovia was in his late 80’s, but from the time he played the first note you knew you were in the presence of greatness. All but the most intricate passages were still performed with ease and a subtlety that a true master commands. I saw Jim Croce perform in the early seventies. He was opening for Woody Allen, on one of his last standup comedy tours. Groucho Marx was in the house that night and joined Woody on stage for a few minutes. The story is told during the podcast. Kevin is a professor and Director of Forensics at Los Angeles Valley College. He didn’t break any events at nationals his senior year, and it clearly ruined his career. Through hard work and sheer luck, his students have somehow managed to consistently win national championships despite having him as their coach. It is truly a marvel to witness. Outside of forensics, Kevin has been a mediocre slam poet, an average artist, a second-rate photographer, a so so husband, an adequate D&D Dungeon Master, a wannabe TikTok influencer, and most importantly, a dad of 3-the one job he will admit to being great at. • In this episode, Robert and Kevin discuss ghosts, the trauma that coaches can inflict on students, and the joys of ADHD. As we enter the new year we also encourage you to visit montrosepress.com to take a look at the Top Moments and Top Stories of 2020 that we've compiled. Now, our feature story. Despite a protest this past summer, the Little Blue Canyon Project will go on as scheduled. John Knowles, the Central Federal Lands Highway Division manager for the project said that the project has been awarded to American Civil Constructors of Littleton. But, district 6 Colorado Senator Don Coram intends to put up a roadblock. According to Coram, it's not over. Coram said he's working with the leadership in the Senate to try and develop a worthy solution. According to Knowles the decisions for how to handle traffic on the road during the construction is primarily the call of ACC. The contractor is a familiar entity in the infrastructure development arena in Colorado. It has actually been the primary contractor for the I-70 construction around Glenwood Springs. The project is backed by the FHWA and CFLHD, as well as the USDA, the Department of Interior, and Colorado Federal Lands Access Program. CDOT got a $20 million grant through FLAP to initially fund the project and then added another $20 million in state money to get it done. While Colorado owns the highway, the federal government is doing the project. And the decision on the road closure schedules was very much left to the contractor Knowles said the closures expected over the next two years are the same ones that were announced last summer. Back in August this announcement drew strong criticism of Western Slope ag producers as well as stakeholders like Arrowhead Mountain Lodge. The lodge expects a major, if not business-killing, impact from the project. Others adversely affected include ranchers, Montrose Forest Products, and the entire tourism industry. And the tourism industry has already been damaged by the pandemic. The project affects about 3 miles of the vital east west link in western Colorado. Work will straighten the road between mileposts 123 and 126.8. To skirt the project, motorists could go through Delta, Hotchkiss, Crawford and over the Blue Mesa dam, which adds about 90 minutes to the trip. To learn more, or to find the full list of the closures - which without action by the Legislature - would begin in April of this year on our website. Now, some local history. This week's local history is brought to you by England Fence. England Fence is family owned and operated, and they're ready to help you build your dream fence, archway, gate, or deck. Right now they're offering their best prices of the year, 20% off of all installed jobs through the month of January. Give them a call at 970-249-4430, or head over to their website englandfence.com. In 1905 Dalton Trumbo was born in Montrose. He also lived in Grand Junction and worked for the Grand Junction Sentinel. He became a screenwriter in Hollywood, but was fired on suspicion of Anti-american sentiments. Even after he was blacklisted he still wrote screenplays - including Roman Holiday. And finally, before we go we'd like to take a moment to remember the life of Ronald Kenneth Dellen Darling. He was born and raised in Indiana, and then moved to Glendale, California, at the age of 11. He was accepted to Los Angeles Valley College on a football scholarship, and then served in the Army - stationed in Alaska. Together with his first wife, Sharon, he had two children, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. While working as a manager at Sears he met his second wife, Suzanne, with whom he raised Stephanie and Kristian. Together they had three children, four more grandchildren. Ron had a beautiful friendship, full of adventure and love, with Etta Walker, and played a very important part in the life of her daughter. He continued to enjoy special times, full of family and fitness, with his third wife, Sara, and had the privilege of being part of the lives of her children. In his most recent years, he enjoyed many happy times and dances with his dear friend Maryanne Love. Ronald always had a knack as an entrepreneur, and began his own business flipping houses and developing shopping centers. He also had a deep love of travel, and enjoyed taking in different cultures around the world in a way that made him feel like a local. He traveled by train all over Europe, hiked Machu Picchu, skydived over the plains of the Las Vegas desert, and went paragliding off the coast of California. He was immersed in the culture of Miramar, gazed over Lake Como in Italy, went on safaris in South Africa, and explored the beauty of Iceland. He found joy in riding camels in Egypt, making friends all over Scotland, going on a road trip around Australia, and sampling specialty pastries all along the coast of Italy. Montrose was Ron's beloved home for the last 19 years. He lived a full, vibrant life and was proud to have done it his own way. Thank you for taking a moment today to remember and celebrate his life. Episode No. 464 of The Modern Art Notes Podcast features artist Torkwase Dyson and historian Dennis Reed. The New Orleans Museum of Art is showing "Torkwase Dyson: Black Compositional Thought, 15 Paintings for the Plantationocene," a series of works made for the museum. These new paintings were inspired by Dyson's interest in the systems that underlay water delivery, energy infrastructure and by the physical impacts of climate change. Through this and other work, Dyson investigates the legacy of agriculture enabled by slave economies and its relationship to the environmental and infrastructural issues of the present, a relationship known as the “plantationocene.” The exhibition is on view through December 31, 2020. Dyson is an artist-in-residence at the Wexner Center for the Arts at The Ohio State University. She is preparing work that will be included in "Climate Changing: On Artists, Institutions, and the Social Environment," which is scheduled to debut at the Wexner on January 30, 2021. Dyson's previous solo museum exhibitions have been at the Arthur Ross Architecture Gallery at Columbia University, at the Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture at Cooper Union, at the Colby College Museum of Art, The Drawing Center, Eyebeam, and more. Her work is in the permanent collections of the Smith College Museum of Art, the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History & Culture, and the Studio Museum in Harlem. On the second segment, historian and curator Dennis Reed discusses the J. Paul Getty Museum's acquisition of 79 pictures made by Japanese-American photographers between 1919 and 1940. Reed's collection and the Getty's acquisition of it is a result of 35 years of work Reed and his students at Los Angeles Valley College did to learn about Japanese-American photographers who made work before the war. Reed and his students built a list of 186 names from photography catalogues at UCLA's Charles E. Young Research Library and painstakingly cold-called the photographers and their relatives in an effort to build knowledge related to an art-making community that was disappeared by the illegal American internment of Japanese-Americans. Reed's collection -- which includes the only surviving work by several of the artists -- has been exhibited in venues such as the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, and the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington. The Getty, which remains closed due to the pandemic, will be exhibiting work from the acquisition at a date to be announced. In addition to the images below, the Getty and Google created this slideshow.

If you're into podcasts, you've probably heard the name Daniele Bolelli. Hunter and Bryan heard it a thousand times. Then, one momentous day, Scott Weigand of Los Angeles Valley College told Hunter he HAD to listen to Daniele Bolelli’s course on Taoism. That did it! Hunter had to know more - who was this wizard? Hunter went to Bolelli's website, paid ten bucks and listened to the course. It blew his mind. And just like that another deep thinker was brought before the Emperor. Bolelli's crime? He had taken lots of books and whittled them down to the most powerful mental tools: great anecdotes. Daniele Bolelli hosts two podcasts, The Drunken Taoist and History on Fire. He’s a member of the Mixed Mental Arts Facebook group and can be found there. You can find the serendipitous lectures here or (www.danielebolelli.com/downloads/taoist-lectures/) Until next time!

Tiffany Lanoix earned a Master's degree in Sociology at the University of California, Irvine in 2005. Currently, she is Assistant Professor of Sociology at Los Angeles Valley College where she also serves as faculty advisor for the Sexual Equality Club. We will be discussing the sociological idea of the social construction of reality, which is basically the idea that nothing has any inherent meaning. In other words, reality is dependent upon the socialization process, or the process by which a person learns their culture. Tiffany connects this concept to spirituality and religion by asserting that the world and the experience that a person wants to live in can be created in spite of their circumstances, since those circumstances only have the meaning that they are given. This show originally aired on 11/7/10. Contact Information: lanoixtr@lavc.edu
