Episode Description: In this episode, we explore a topic often left unspoken but widely experienced—how child abuse professionals use dark humor to cope with the emotional weight of their work. Joined by neurohumorist Karyn Buxman, an expert in the therapeutic power of laughter, we discuss how humor serves as a lifeline in challenging environments. Discover the fine line between humor as a coping mechanism and when it might become harmful. Download Transcript Guest: Karyn Buxman, RN, MSN, CSP, CPAE Neurohumorist Speaker Hall of Fame Show Notes: In this episode, host Christina Rouse dives into a delicate and seldom discussed topic in the child advocacy field about how professionals use gallows humor and dark humor to cope with the emotional toll of their work. Joined by neurohumorist Karyn Buxman, this episode explores the science behind humor, how it serves as a tool for stress relief, and when it may cross the line. Karyn shares her expert insights on how humor impacts brain function, helping professionals recover from amygdala hijack moments and regain cognitive control in the face of trauma. Through a dynamic conversation, Christina and Karyn discuss how laughter can be both a lifeline and, at times, a liability when used without care in sensitive environments. The episode also features sound bites from professionals on the frontlines of child abuse prevention, discussing their experiences with humor as a coping mechanism, and Karyn details the 7 Humor Competencies of High Performers she developed: Rapport/Bond, Context, Authenticity, Safety, Timing, Content, and Delivery. The episode encourages listeners to understand the nuances of gallows humor, while also offering practical advice on fostering healthier workplace humor that doesn't cross ethical boundaries. Karyn provides guidance for leaders on creating supportive environments and using humor mindfully, emphasizing that while abused children are no joke, laughter can help heal the caregivers and improve the care provided to victims. Joy and Tyler shared a common early interest: debt. With a focus on paying down this debt, Joy was able to leave an unfulfilling desk job and begin her work as a coach, relying on Tyler's steady income as a biologist to cover their life's expenses. As Joy's business grew, they were able to shift focus from debt paydown to pursuing financial independence. But along the way, Joy has managed the inevitable bumps in the road of solo entrepreneurship, including crushing hours, demanding tasks outside of her primary skillset, the psychologically draining world of social media, and the emotional toll of coaching women in a particularly important phase in their lives. Looking back though, she wouldn't trade the experience and personal growth that this path has provided. This is a really fun yet insightful story of two people with very different world views who really make it work. Happy 2022!! Let's dive deep into Genesis chapter 1 to discover what God could be teaching us about how things begin and how we are invited to co-create with God. As we start the new year, let's reflect on what God may be inviting us into...maybe a space to reflect and hold where we have been, maybe a space to start birthing something new, or maybe a space to get to work doing the thing that God has been calling us towards for some time. A couple books that were mentioned in this episode: Man's Search for Meaning (Viktor E. Frankl) The Inclusive Bible: The First Egalitarian Translation This podcast is a partnership between 40 Orchards and Processing Faith… 40 Orchards, with Steph and Lisa, invites people to wrestle through Biblical texts using the ancient Jewish concepts of midrash. In a 40 Orchards study, every question is safe, everyone is welcome, and every voice is valued. We believe there's room for all of us. No person and no question is off limits—because we know that together we can expand each other's experience of what is sacred, whole, and good. You can learn more about 40 Orchards and sign-up for a study by going to 40orchards.org. Processing Faith is a space created by Jason Steffenhagen for people to do exactly that…process their faith. It's not one thing…but more like a good recipe. It's like 1 part pastoral care, 1 part theological exploration, and 1 part wrestling with all the questions. You can learn more about Processing Faith and sign-up for a free 45 min session by going to processingfaith.com.

Sometimes life hits us so hard that our minds struggle to assimilate and understand what we are going through at that moment. Sometimes going through these periods, while unimaginably painful, can be an incredible catalyst for growth and understanding.I've decided to do a solo episode for today's podcast to talk about one of the worst moments in my life, my little sister's death. In this episode, I share my deepest fears and the mix of emotions and reactions I experienced from the moment I received this terrible news until several days after the reception and how it affected and changed my life. I also talk about how sharing our emotions connects us with people and how feeling gigantic amounts of pain can let us know the amount of love and joy we can experience. In this show, I try to ask people about their challenges overcome, so it's only fair that I share more about my journey through the most painful thing that's ever happened to me. To learn more about my story, how it can help you, and so much more, tune in to Episode 18 of What Didn't Kill You.In This Episode, You Will Learn:How I dealt with one of the worst moments of my life (5:20)The difference between an intellectual understanding of the pain and experiencing it (10:40)How sharing our emotions and being vulnerable connects us with people (19:30)The articulate mind disarticulated (25:00)Discovering a different level of emotional and rational connection with people (30:40)How hard it is to divorce ourselves from particular identities (40:40)Resources:Book: Man's Search for Meaning - Viktor E. In today's episode of The Art of Passive Income, Mark and Scott talk with Stephen Shapiro—StephenShapiro.com. Stephen is a big deal. He is in the business of company innovation and helps companies like 3M, Proctor and Gamble, Nike, and Marriott improve their innovation practices. Stephen is also the author of four books and has spoken to audiences in 50 different countries. Before Stephen became an expert in innovation and helping companies grow he was working at the opposite end of the spectrum in business optimization, which meant he was helping companies shrink and in the process people were losing their jobs. Seeing the impact it had on those who lost their jobs, he decided that he didn't want to be part of that process anymore. So, he took a leave of absence and then decided to focus on innovation and growth. He created a 20,000 person practice and has never looked back since… that was over 20 years ago. Join us as Stephen dives deep into the approach of business innovation, including: The real definition of innovation How he convinces big companies to innovate instead of cut Where he sees companies struggling The worst advice he has seen given Plus, so much more! You can cut expenses and become optimized, however, you can't cut your way to success. If you start cutting out all the expenses then the revenue is going to take a hit too because the two of them work hand in hand. There is no end date in innovation. You don't reach your goals then take your foot off the accelerator and expect your company to keep going at status quo. Innovation is constantly changing and evolving with the market and it's important to stay on top of your game and always look for new ways to grow and stay relevant in the market. Jeff Bezos is a good example of that. Jeff founded Amazon nearly 25 years ago, it's the largest online retailer in the world and his foot is still on the gas pedal. They are still innovating like they are new. He's set this long-term time horizon that says, “We are not dealing with today—we are dealing with 500 years from now. We are not done—We haven't even begun.” Listen in as we travel deep into the world of business innovation, and find out which 3 CEOs Stephan would invite to dinner and what question he would ask them. Stephen's book recommendations: Best Practices Are Stupid: 40 Ways to Out-Innovate the Competition written by himself Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman!: Adventures of a Curious Character -Richard P. Life Athletes, hello and welcome to episode 79 of the Life Athletics Podcast! Today's guest Life Athlete is Greg Smith. Greg Smith is an english professor living and working in South Korea. I first met him as the best Ultimate frisbee player in the league where I was introduced to the sport. Over the years I got to know a man who strived to be his best self in all things. On the field, yes, but also and especially off of it. Watching how he and his wife have been raising their children, actively using the Ultimate frisbee community, was and is an inspiration. Greg joined me as he walked his dog one night in the hills of Daejeon South Korea. Habit of Thought: I'm curious and always looking to learn. If something doesn't work I'll change it.
