375: How to improve your digestion - with Tyler Mayoras (ALL-STAR)

The Simplifiers Podcast

Today, we are talking all about how to improve your digestion. Are you feeling a bit bloated, and well, clogged up? Aha, this one's for you! My all-star special guest today is Cool Beans co-founder Tyler Mayoras and he's simplifying how to improve your digestion. There's nothing worse than having tummy aches and feeling like your body isn't working right. Tyler believes that with a few simple shifts in what you eat, all of this could improve fairly quickly. Here's how.  My all-star special guest today is Tyler Mayoras and he's simplifying how to improve your digestion. We tackle and simplify all aspects of it, including: Why focusing on your gut health and digestion is so (darn) important these days for whole body health and wellness What the big secret is behind beans as a superfood… and how to incorporate more beans into your meals, in a simple way How to have more food diversity in what you eat weekly and why so many people are going plant-based nowadays With new food innovation these days, there seem to be more plant-based choices in our grocery stores than ever before. How to avoid the “vegan junk food” craze and make better choices when grocery shopping …and ultimately, I asked him about his take on “The Carnivore Diet” (aka. only eating meat) that seems to be the latest fad and is it good for your body or not? If you've been contemplating making a shift towards a plant-based diet or going vegetarian, you'll definitely enjoy this conversation. And it might start small like doing “Meatless Monday” or taking the time to read the labels when you shop for groceries. Remember, you're looking for items made from whole food, minimally processed ingredients. Less packaging and added chemicals/preservatives, more plants is best. You'll find your brain fog disappears, the bloating melts away, and your skin is clearer. Yes, yes, and YES! Q: Are you ready to improve your digestion? If yes, this one is for you. It's time to #DoTheThing! ---- Show notes available with all links mentioned here: https://www.thesimplifiers.com/posts/375-how-to-improve-your-digestion---with-tyler-mayoras-all-star

I'm gonna share with you some cool things I found for County Wicklow in Ireland. We're driving through Wicklow for my Celtic Invasion of Wexford. I heard so many good things about Wicklow that I plan to stop there. Now time for your Sustainability tip for the day. Get on the Meatless Monday bandwagon A few years back, my wife decided we would add a meatless day to our meal schedule for the week. It took me a while to get used to it. But I gotta say I feel so much better because of it. Now I've come to realize I really don't need meat in my diet. Not that I don't eat it. But I don't feel the need to spend the money to do so. We went to the grocery store last week and the price of a steak was insane, like double what it used to be. Giving up meat can be difficult, but it's one of the most impactful things that anyone can do to lower their personal carbon footprint and send a bigger message about sustainability in our agricultural system. Now I eat mostly veggies. Garbanzos are a new favorite. We have a super simple recipe that makes yummy garbanzos to go on rice and veggies. I also make my hummus. I even found this great recipe for lentil pancakes. They're sooo good. There are so many great vegetarian and vegan recipes I found on YouTube. I'm eating them up. And yet, we still eat chicken and salmon and steak and carnitas depending on our mood. But it feels good to not feel stuffed full of meat. Oh.  Some good news. Last time, I mentioned getting involved with your local government. Good Newsletter reported. A bipartisan coalition of 24 U.S. governors pledged to continue the country's work toward achieving Paris Agreement goals.Representing nearly 60% of the U.S. economy and 55% of the nation's population, Alliance members pledged to reduce collective greenhouse gas emissions by 26% below 2005 levels by 2025, a target it is on track to achieve The Goodnewsletter is created by Good Good Good. 8:52 - Marc Gunn “Naked” from Come Adventure With Me Learn more about “Naked” in episode #278 Listen to a rough cut of Naked The song was written for In the ‘Verse show podcast #11. They use the dragon design that came out with the original release. But they are both made entirely of wood instead of enamel. You buy one, you get both. But only a handful of both will be available. Animal products are the only source of dietary cholesterol; they are also the primary source of saturated fat in our diet, which is associated with higher blood cholesterol levels.  Helps prevent type 2 diabetes  Approximately one in three American adults has prediabetes—a risk factor for developing type 2 diabetes.   Kidney health In the United States, about 30 million adults have chronic kidney disease—and most aren't aware of it. One in three American adults are at risk for chronic kidney disease. Risk factors for kidney disease include diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity, and family history.  Boosts immune system function  A healthy plant-based diet can help strengthen your immune system to aid in fighting viruses and help you recover more quickly from illness.   Supports a healthy weight Maintaining a healthy weight can reduce the risk of serious health problems. Substituting more plant-based foods in place of meat can help contribute to a healthier body weight.  Lowers greenhouse gas emissions  Nearly 15% of global greenhouse gas emissions come from the production of meat, dairy, and eggs—more greenhouse gases than the world's entire transportation sector—cars, trucks, planes, trains—combined. Eating more plant-based foods can help reduce emissions associated with meat production.  Saves water  Meat, particularly beef, has the highest water footprint of all foods. Eating a more plant-based diet has the potential to decrease agricultural water use by 50%.  Prevents deforestation  Livestock production uses 75% of the Earth's agricultural land. Shifting to a more plant-based diet reduces deforestation while decreasing agricultural land use by 80%.  Reduces species loss Livestock production is the biggest human contributor to species decline and has led to an over 60% decline in species populations since 1970.   Meatless Mondays Helps build healthy habits  Research suggests that people are more open to trying healthy behaviors at the start of the week. Monday offers a weekly opportunity to “reset” and get back on track. Studies show that people who restart a healthy habit at the beginning of the week are better able to maintain progress over time.  Fosters discovery of new foods Use Meatless Monday as an opportunity to explore new types of recipes, ingredients, and cuisines. Experiment with unfamiliar foods to find new favorites.    Saves money Foods like beans, lentils, and tofu are cost-effective protein sources that are typically less expensive than many types of meat, seafood, and poultry. One study found people saved 16% on food costs by switching to a plant-based diet.  Expands culinary skills  With new ingredients comes the need for new cooking methods. Try using different techniques like braising, air frying, stuffing, and puréeing to make meals more exciting.   Strengthens a growing movement Meatless Monday is active in more than 40 countries and available in countless schools, companies, and communities around the world.  Photo: www.twospoons.ca Recipe “Creamy Vegan Mushroom Pasta” https://www.twospoons.ca/creamy-vegan-mushroom-pasta/

If you're new to cooking with tofu or want a new way to enjoy it, this one is for you! Listen along to learn how to make it.  Firm tofu is sliced and marinated in soy sauce and lemon juice. Then you bread it with panko, bake until it's crispy, and top with buffalo sauce. Erin ended up making her own version of a buffalo sauce starting with cholula sauce, and it was great! We enjoyed it with a crunchy creamy celery slaw with loads of dill and it was the perfect pairing. By Audrey Scott I have been Fasting since June 2020, aged 51, 4 months into the Pandemic. My weight had crept up again despite exercising 4 hours every morning to pass the time and try and keep the weight gain to a minimum. I weighed 230lbs at that point. I read Delay Don't Deny by Gin Stephens. I can't remember how I found her on the internet, but I bought her book on Amazon, and it resonated with me so deeply that I finally felt hopeful that I may have discovered a lifestyle that could work for me. With my Nursing background, I understood the concept of Insulin Resistance and suspected that I suffered from this as I'd dieted for over 20 years on and off.  I was slim as a child and always adored food, and I can remember feeling hungry a lot as a girl and not enjoying that sensation My weight gain started when I left home to train as a nurse, with shift patterns and feeling like I had no control over when I would next get to eat on shifts, I began the habit of overeating so I wouldn't experience hunger. I also discovered fast food and Alcohol and enjoyed the student lifestyle to the fullest!! I knew I was gaining weight but didn't weigh myself regularly as I didn't want to know.   This continued for years, I lost weight on a low fat diet after I had my first child only to regain again after I had my second daughter. I began to try to seriously address my weight gain in 2003 when I moved to the USA with my husband and family; at that point, I weighed 266 lbs, my highest recorded weight, and needed to lose some. I lost 40 lbs. That was the start of years of YoYo dieting before I found IF in 2020    I started on an 18/6 protocol, clean fasting from Day 1. I lost 2 lbs of water weight in the first week and nothing for three months! I persevered as I genuinely thought that something would be happening inside of me, and my clothes were getting loose. I had a woosh of a 2 lb loss in October and then lost weight steadily from that point on, about 1 lb per week.  In the December of that year, I started doing a Meatless Monday for the autophagy benefits, and I swiftly moved onto a Hybrid ADF Approach on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays with subsequent Up days and a 4/6 hour window on a Sunday, which means I can be socialable on the weekends with my family.   I have been maintaining my weight around the 170 lb mark for about 18 months, happily fasting with zero plans EVER to stop   I have been married happily for 28 years, have 2 precious adult daughters and two gorgeous rescue cats. I work part-time in a Secondary school as a Learning Support Assistant.  In my free time, I love being with family and friends, doing Zumba, moderate exercise, listening to podcasts, reading, and watching TV.  I love going on holidays/vacations. I try to cruise at least once a year and still fast on these trips, just adapting my windows to what suits you.  I am so grateful to have discovered Fasting; it has given me the tools to make me feel good about myself, and I love to look and feel healthy.

Have you heard that eating animal protein causes cancer? Or that you'll save the world if you only give up hamburgers forever?  Despite dutifully reducing our consumption of animal protein for decades, rates of obesity and chronic disease have skyrocketed.   In the face of relentless anti-meat propaganda, what if the blanket advice to follow strict plant-based diets is actually accelerating rates of obesity and disease?  When I gave up meat as a young athlete for the sake of health and the environment, my results were abysmal. I lost muscle, gained fat, lacked energy, recovered poorly, and my race performance suffered.  Since plant-based fake meats and meat substitutes are incomplete proteins that are not well absorbed or utilized by our bodies, avoiding high-quality animal protein can lead to poor outcomes in health and performance for children and adults alike.  Meatless Mondays may sound virtuous, but they're not saving the environment or solving the obesity epidemic as many are led to believe.  Indiscriminately blaming cattle for the sins of fossil fuels and industrial agriculture is a mistake. We all want to save the world, but as this week's guest quips: “we can't eat our way out of a climate crisis.”  Whether you're raising animals or growing crops, industrial agriculture isn't friendly to the environment or our health. Prioritizing the health of your body and the planet requires that we source real food according to the laws of nature, prioritizing regenerative agriculture and pasture-raised animals over the products of concentrated feedlots and industrial monocrops. When it comes to health and performance, eating high-quality protein from healthy animals is one of the most powerful weapons we have to fight obesity, muscle wasting, and premature aging.  Today we're back with our friend Dr. Gabrielle Lyon, a New York Times Bestselling author, podcaster and functional medicine physician specializing in the concept of muscle-centric medicine, which focuses on the largest organ in the body, skeletal muscle, as the key to health and longevity. In this episode with Dr. Gabrielle Lyon, you'll discover: Why what we think of as aging is actually a disease of impaired muscle The surprising relationship between meat, protein, and cancer How society's focus on weight loss has led to neglect of muscle building, which is critical for overall health The most effective exercises and training frequency to build skeletal muscle, optimize metabolism, and fight aging And much more… Read the show notes: https://fatburningman.com/gabrielle-lyon-why-meat-eating-and-strength-training-are-key-to-longevity/  Grab Dr. Gabrielle Lyon's new book “Forever Strong”: https://drgabriellelyon.com/forever-strong/ Join the Abel James' Substack channel: https://abeljames.substack.com/  Watch on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/fatburningman  Follow on X: https://x.com/abeljames  Like the show on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/fatburningman  Click here for your free Fat-Burning Kit: http://fatburningman.com/bonus

My name is Jack and I'm here with my co-host social.00:00:54JackAnd today we're doing another topic talk and today's question is, should humans switch to a plant based diet to protect animal rights?00:01:06JackWhat do you think, social?00:01:08XochitlShould humans switch your plan beside? Well, I have been vegan in the past, Jack, and I've also been vegetarian in the.00:01:16XochitlSo I had.00:01:18XochitlThe even the plant based diet on multiple occasions, but I never judge anyone who didn't because it's a very hard switch because the world is kind of built around assuming that you have a normal diet and now vegan food is way more accessible. Back. When I was vegan in high school.00:01:36XochitlUh, it was very hard to be vegan. You couldn't go out to eat anywhere. You couldn't buy any like ready made vegan food at the store and there weren't any products like, there weren't any good veggie burgers or vegan.00:01:45JackYeah.00:01:49JackNo impossible burgers or anything like that.00:01:52XochitlNo. So it really sucked. And then?00:01:56XochitlI yeah. So I don't know. And then there.00:01:59XochitlAre there were there?00:02:00XochitlWas a phase where I would eat plant.00:02:01XochitlBased like uh?00:02:04XochitlTwo weeks out of the month and then the other two weeks, I just see normal, but that was more. That was like, yeah, I mean, yeah, it was kind of a whole thing, not in the ways you might you might expect but but.00:02:11JackFor health.00:02:22XochitlYeah, so, so I don't know, this is a tricky 1 because to me now I like me, I enjoy me and I enjoy having food freedom and getting to eat whatever I want and.00:02:37XochitlI think that as people, us being vegan is like far less or us consuming meat or choosing not to consume meat or choosing to eat plant based or not plant based whatever it may be is far less damaging to the environment or has far less of an impact overall than these giant greedy.00:02:57XochitlCorporations and industries that are.00:03:00XochitlChoosing practices that are they know, have been harmful for years, like the fracking industry and. And so I think ultimately, yes, it's just like our little drop in a bucket or drop in the ocean and we can choose to do it or not to do it. I don't think it really necessarily makes you better.00:03:20XochitlOr not, or neither do I I I just think it's so much more impactful for a corporation to.00:03:28XochitlAnd the government to put in regulations than it is for people to just go like Meatless Mondays or something.00:03:35JackYeah, my my problem with with eating meat and.00:03:41JackIt's the factory farming is I have a real problem with that because I know that there are definitely animal abuses that are happening. And yet, even though I know that intellect.00:03:51XochitlYeah.00:03:55JackReally, it's really hard for me to make the switch to vegan or vegetarian or be vegan or vegetarian, even though I know that it's probably morally the right thing to do until farming practices become more ethical.00:04:15JackAnd you know, because I think that like.00:04:18JackYou know the the way that they, you know, pack chickens into tiny little space.00:04:24JackIs.00:04:25XochitlRight. These, like tiny cages and they can't, can't walk or anything.00:04:29JackYeah. Yeah. And they, they Peck each other to death and they they all kinds of really horrible things happen. Same with like cows or sorry, the same with cows and same with pigs as well. And yet I just.00:04:45JackLove meat? That is funny. I really have no excuse. You know, it's just like and. And when I don't eat meat, I I kind of feel the color kind of drain out of my face, you know, like I I feel weak when I'm not eating protein. And and I know that you can get protein from other sources.00:05:07XochitlRight.00:05:08JackYou can, you know, it's not like vegans don't eat protein.00:05:12JackBut it's just so much cheaper and so much easier to just buy like a bag of chicken breasts and or some, you know, some pork or something like that.00:05:24XochitlWell, it's kind of tastier and it's like blade rip because like it, it's probably cheaper to buy like a big thing of tofu or a big thing of beans and cook it. Really. Hmm. But it's it is convenient. And it's like something that you're used to. Right. So it's like.00:05:33JackMHM.00:05:39XochitlIt's just hard to break that like it's tasty. Like I'll be real with you. I don't want to eat like a like a.00:05:39JackYeah.00:05:48XochitlI'd rather eat a plate of chicken wings than like a.00:05:51XochitlTofu and beans dish or something.00:05:54XochitlMost of the time.00:05:54JackYeah, you know.00:05:56XochitlIf I lived, if.00:05:57JackI lived in Mexico and I could get like a really nice plate of like beans with rice.00:06:03XochitlOh yeah.00:06:04JackI think I could actually. I I think in Mexico I could actually do it. You know it's.00:06:10발표자At least.00:06:11XochitlThey're like vegetarian, right? Yeah.00:06:14JackYeah, maybe not vegan. I might not be. I might still want to eat like eggs or something like that.00:06:20JackAnd maybe drink milk or something like that, cause I do. I do like milk in my coffee. But you know there there are other alternatives. You know, I could. I could drink oat milk or almond milk or something like that and.00:06:36XochitlI like oat milk more than I like regular milk, but it's like worse for you, so.00:06:40JackYeah, it's not right health wise, it's probably it's not better, it just might be better for the environment perhaps or or it might be.00:06:48JackBe more ethical to you know.00:06:53XochitlWell, one, one that interesting thing with like dealing with the ethics of it, Jack is like.00:06:59XochitlIt's not necessarily like, uh, you could just eat. I mean, it's more expensive, but you could eat organic meat that has ethical practices you.00:07:10JackThat's true. That's true. If you if you source the right the right product, you you, you can find stuff that's a little bit more ethically growing or whatever. That's true. That's true. Yeah, I guess, you know, for me.00:07:13XochitlCould.00:07:30JackIt just comes down to dollars and cents in. In many ways it's just I just like, I don't want to pay the extra money for it.00:07:39JackAnd so I I just, I just kind of push it to the back of my mind that like ohh it's probably not as bad as they say it is, you know, but I do, I think it is pretty bad actually this the factory farming situation and I I think it's you know it it'll be interesting to see like in the future.00:07:59JackWhat happens when they start growing lab? You know, lab grown.00:08:02JackEat.00:08:04XochitlYeah.00:08:04JackThat that'll be interesting because you know, there may may be a time when when they they don't need animals at all anymore, we we may not have to to deal with that at all. I don't know how people might be disgusted by it.00:08:18XochitlI definitely would be less disgusted by lab grown meat than I would be by like.00:08:23XochitlHow the practice is you know what I mean?00:08:26JackYeah, yeah, watching the animals torture each other into death in these tiny cages.00:08:32JackSeems less disgusting than than growing some meat in a lab, so.00:08:36XochitlEat lamb meat seems like it would be really sterile. And like with the conditions that they have in these factory farms, like a lot of the meat probably has like nasty infections and stuff like so they think.00:08:46JackAntibiotics. Yeah, all that sort of stuff, yeah.00:08:48XochitlYeah, like they have to have antibiotics to avoid infections and all that nasty. So I don't know. I. Yeah, I I honestly would would be more interested in love me because I would think it would. It would be so. I mean, I wouldn't want to like.00:09:02XochitlDie from some weird mutation, you know, stupid, but you know, I mean, I'm sure that would be unlikely, but.00:09:07JackYeah.00:09:09JackYeah. Yeah. Well, I'm thinking I I may. I may make. I may make another run at vegetarianism here in the in the near future, but I'm I. I've got to mentally prepare myself for it.00:09:10XochitlYeah, yeah.00:09:22XochitlYeah, you don't have to go all or nothing. You can. You can just like, slowly introduce more vegetarian meals into your diet.00:09:30JackYeah.00:09:31XochitlAnd you know, like, you know, maybe have a.00:09:36XochitlOr go like pescatarian or something which is so easy to do in Korea. I think there's a lot of good. Yeah, you could go like pescatarian and you could just slowly like phase.00:09:40JackYeah, that's true.00:09:45XochitlOut and.00:09:46XochitlThere's not that much dairy.00:09:50JackYeah. And for our listeners, pescatarian means seafood. So you could just go like fully seafood diet.00:09:57JackYeah.00:09:57XochitlYeah, you just go like a seafood diet pretty much. So, yeah. I mean, yeah, I don't know. I think that the. Yeah, I get it. I mean, most of the time here in Mexico.00:10:09XochitlSo.00:10:10XochitlIt's kind of more accessible to get like meat that's butchered locally and that you know the practices are good. Like, you know, you see the chickens running around and you know that they're healthy and happy.00:10:24JackYeah, before before its head got lopped off at.00:10:28JackLeast it had.00:10:28JackA good life, you know. Enjoy. Yeah, you know.00:10:30XochitlYeah, it's like.00:10:32XochitlIt was happy so.00:10:38XochitlYeah, yeah.00:10:41XochitlYeah, I don't know. It was kind of my thing, I think. I think it's really more up to corporations to to do things more ethically. I think what in what we can we should like just eating less meat and high quality meat that has more ethical practices overall. And I mean I think that's important. But at the same time, I think it's like up to corporations.00:10:41JackYeah.00:11:01XochitlTulip.00:11:03XochitlIt's that's the core.00:11:04JackYes.00:11:04XochitlYeah. To behave. It's up to the government to put, to make laws that guarantee corporations behaving in a in an ethical manner. But they won't do that. These corporations can make more money behaving unethically. So it's kind of a crapshoot. Yeah, you know what I'm interested to hear what our listeners.00:11:19JackRight, right.00:11:22JackYeah.00:11:25XochitlI have to say I know that many of our listeners, uh, come from vegetarian cultures and others come from meat dominant cultures. Many countries eat way less meat than the US does, so I'm just curious overall. You know what? What they have to say what they think.00:11:39XochitlAnd yeah, we just comment down below. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Deontological Constraints on Animal Products, published by emre kaplan on April 9, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Introduction There is a memetically powerful argument within animal advocacy circles which goes like the following: "We would never ask child abusers to commit less child abuse, so we can't ask other people to reduce their animal product consumption. We must ask them to end it." In this post I try to construct and evaluate a part of this argument. First, I explain my motivation for evaluating the strength of this argument. Second, I note that it's morally permissible to ask for reductions in some kinds of wrongdoings and list different ways animal production consumption can be morally wrong. I create the category of "non-negotiably wrong" to refer to actions that can't be asked to be reduced. Third, I look into whether animal product use might be non-negotiably wrong by listing several deontological constraints that might be non-negotiable. A Venn Diagram summarising results I don't have any strong conclusions. I aim to reduce my own confusion and get more input from professional moral philosophers on this topic through this post. I'm also not sure if I should keep writing such posts, so if this post is helpful to you in any way, please let me know. Many thanks to Michael St. Jules and Bob Fischer for their helpful feedback. All errors are my own. Motivation Some animal advocates argue for the following positions because they believe people have a non-negotiable duty to avoid consuming animal products: Only vegans can speak at animal advocacy events Only vegans can be members of animal advocacy organisations Non-vegans shouldn't join animal advocacy protests All animal advocacy organisations have a responsibility to prominently advocate for veganism because it's the main obligation to animals It's morally forbidden to use the following sentences because they condone some animal product use or don't explicitly reject all animal product use: Go vegetarian. Meat should be taxed. Our school should have Meatless Mondays. Costco should go cage-free. The default school meals at Grenoble should be vegetarian. The public schools in New York City should serve exclusively plant-based food on Fridays. Take the vegan-22 challenge, go vegan for 22 days. Maybe you should try going plant-based except for cheese. According to this line of argument, animal product use is not merely harmful(akin to carbon emissions) but also violation of a very strong moral constraint(akin to direct physical violence or owning slaves). It is non-negotiably wrong. For that reason, including non-vegans in animal advocacy is similar to including slave-owners in anti-slavery advocacy. Asking for a reduction in animal product use is akin to asking for a reduction in physical violence("don't beat your wife in January"). To clarify, as it is the case with many issues, there is a spectrum of opinions here. Some people will endorse some of the positions above while rejecting others. I have been sympathetic to these arguments when it comes to my own consumption. I'm very sympathetic to the idea that since animals are not well-represented, we're likely to have a bias against their interests. When animal interests and my own interests get into conflict, it makes sense for me to be extra cautious to compensate for my own bias. So I'm happy with being strict in avoiding animal products in clothing and food. On the other hand, I also suspect being too restrictive in animal advocacy might result in more animals being killed and tortured compared to alternatives. Some reasons offered are the following: There might be a Laffer curve to the behaviour change created by your demands. Being too demanding might result in less change than being moderately demanding. (Example: The New York City officials won...

It's an easy way to support our work.Devin: What do you see as your superpower?Vicky: I believe my relentlessness or tenacity, determination, whatever you want to say that is, has been a real driver in my life–always.“The Humane League works to end the abuse of animals raised for food,” says the nonprofit's president, Vicky Bond. “We're working to end cages for laying hens worldwide through our work with the Open Wing Alliance.”Always an animal lover, Vicky trained as a veterinarian. She shares her experience:While training to be a vet, I witnessed factory farms for the first time. I got to see how these animals suffered day in and day out in these systems. As a veterinarian, you would go on a farm and treat the individual animal. You may give bulk antibiotics for the animals, but you weren't treating the fundamental issue: these systems are wrong. Animals should not be in them, and being in them causes them a lot of suffering. So, while doing my veterinary degree, I went and did a master's of environment, development and policy and learned about the impact of policy work of that institutional change that you can make and how much you can scale up impact. So, when I left that school–I did work as a vet for a while–but I also got involved in more activist-led things, in policy change and ended up being able to work what I do now, which is to create change for farm animals on a large scale, impacting hundreds of millions of animals versus what I could have done as a veterinarian, which would have probably been much smaller on the individual level of animals. The work is staggering. In the US alone, producers are raising about 1.5 billion chickens, including broiler and laying hens. About 9 billion are raised annually in this country alone–broiler chickens are slaughtered after just six weeks.Vicky describes what she's seen firsthand:I've been on these on these farms. You walk into a very large shed, and all you can hear is the clanging noises of the birds' beaks and feet on the metal because that's their entire life. They spend their life in this metal cage, four or five of them–not even enough space to spread their wings. They will be fed, given water, and that's all they get. They never get to see sunlight. They never get to spread their wings. They often end up pecking at each other through sheer boredom. They end up with broken bones. All in the name of cheap eggs.“When we talk about the world, we're talking about over 70 billion land animals raised and slaughtered every year for food,” Vicky says. It's not sustainable. The cruelty is not sustainable. The food system itself–we need to move to more plant-based options to remove some of the eggs, dairy, and meats from our diets so that we can have a sustainable food system.”She is emphatic that animal suffering needn't be a part of our food supply. “It is perfectly plausible for us to have farming systems that are higher welfare and that move away from these intensive practices that see animals stacked on top of each other, beak to beak,” she says.“We want a day when animals aren't abused for food,” Vicky continues. “We want to see that through incremental change, like ending cages, like ending farrowing crates, which is where mama pigs are put while they're pregnant–and they can't even turn around.”The Humane League is making progress. “We started this work over a decade ago now,” she says. “At the time in the US, 5 percent of birds were cage-free here for laying hens; we're now at 14 percent. So, we're seeing an impact of 130-plus million birds every year.”Throughout her career, she has used and strengthened her tenacity, making it a superpower.AI Episode Summary1. The Humane League, led by President Vicky Bond, aims to end the abuse of animals raised for food, predominantly by working with food companies to improve farm animal welfare in their supply chains.2. They also focus on policy and legislative changes, advocate for individual diet changes, and aim to end the use of battery cages for laying hens through collaborative global efforts with the Open Wing Alliance.3. The Humane League engages in peaceful protests to raise public awareness and hold companies accountable for farm animal welfare, especially in regard to ending the confinement of laying hens in cages.4. Vicky Bond described the poor conditions of caged hens, emphasizing the lack of space and natural behaviors, highlighting the broken bones and the lack of access to sunlight, which leads to suffering—all for the production of cheap eggs.5. Vicky argues for a sustainable food system that doesn't include farm animal cruelty, stating that higher welfare farming systems are possible and that we should shift towards plant-based options to maintain sustainability.6. Incremental changes advocated by The Humane League have led to significant welfare improvements, citing that the percentage of cage-free hens has increased from 5 to 14 percent in the US, thereby affecting the lives of over 130 million birds annually.7. Vicky Bond transitioned from veterinary practice to animal welfare advocacy after witnessing the suffering of animals on factory farms, realizing she could have a broader impact on animal welfare through policy change and activism rather than individual veterinary care.8. Actions that individuals can take to support the Humane League include volunteering, taking digital action through Fast Action Network, raising awareness on social media, donating, and making informed purchase decisions based on welfare-conscious product labeling.9. Vicky encourages a gradual approach to changing dietary habits towards plant-based options, acknowledging that swift changes can be difficult and recommending gradual steps like "Meatless Mondays" or substituting one meal a day with a plant-based alternative.10. Finally, Vicky shared her superpower of tenacity, recounting her refusal to back down against industry leaders, such as a rabbit farm donor, ultimately influencing him to consider cage-free options, highlighting the importance of staying persistent to achieve goals.Share to encourage others to take action. How to Develop Tenacity As a SuperpowerVicky shared a story that illustrates her tenacity:A number of years ago now, I was working on rabbit farming. So rabbit farming–we don't hear of it that much, but it's the second most farmed species in Europe. I was working across Europe. I was at a conference and trying to push to end cages for rabbits as well because they're predominantly in battery cages in Europe. We're at the conference, and I didn't know at the time, but he was the largest owner of all the systems, basically, in Austria, Germany and other places. After the conference, he came up to me and said, “Well, it's nice to meet you, but what would you know about rabbit farming? This is unrealistic, and I can show you why it's good to keep them in cages.”In that moment, I just didn't stand for it. I was very much like, “Well, the science is this. I disagree strongly on this. I've got systems. I've seen systems that work that are not in cages. It is doable. This is very much a profit-driven mentality.”He was pretty upset and left. Then, the next day, he came up to me and was like, “I was thinking about what you said. I do think we should potentially–this does sound like this might be the future for rabbit farming. I want to understand more. Here's my card. Can we have a conversation?”So, in those moments, I've come up against industry leaders. It's not shrinking down. But actually, standing tall, I think, has paid off.The tenacity paid off! Vicky offers some advice for strengthening yours:Think that mistakes are good. We're going to make mistakes, but learning from them is the important bit. So, if you have a clear goal, don't give up. You will get there. The path might be wandering and might not appear exactly how you hoped it would, but you will get there if you stay the course of time. So, stay strong, stay relentless. You can make it.By following Vicky's advice and example, you can strengthen your tenacity. With practice and patience, you can make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileVicky Bond (she/her):President, The Humane League, The Humane LeagueAbout The Humane League: The Humane League is a global nonprofit that exists to end the abuse of animals raised for food. Bond trained as a veterinary surgeon and practiced as a veterinarian with the primary goal of helping animals. Monica Sancio Vegan Fit Motivation- Motivación Vegan Fit (English + Español)

Hello, my friends I missed you so much! My September Birthday, taking more care of my doggies, and some vacations... Here I am, ready to give you my best ENERGY, as in MASTER YOUR HIGH VIBE! Monday is my favorite day of the week, because it's like a fresh start, but some of us don't like Mondays, because it's having to go back to work, to school, and to activities that seem less fun. Well, when you design your life the way you want to live it - like I do, and I help you do - you actually love most days... And you really don't need vacations from living the way you want to... And when it comes to exercising, working out, eating healthy and practicing the daily disciplines for your best health... It's great to have a boost of motivation at the start of the week. So honoring the famous hashtag Monday Motivation, here are 3 tips: 1) DO IT ANYWAY: Meaning, don't wait to feel motivated, seriously. It rarely kicks in when you think of going to the gym or practicing at home. And my favorite definition of discipline is when you do it, even when you don't feel like it. 2) WARM-UP: Not just to avoid injury is it important to start off with lighter intensity, but it eases the way to the harder parts of your routine. And most probably, you will feel that boost that will get you in motion. 3) MAKE IT SIMPLE: When it comes to eating more plant foods, I recommend and make videos of practical nutrition: like coconut milk, lentil sprouts, brown rice as staples. So that it becomes easier to add on to that... And since it's also Meatless Monday, it's a great opportunity to start off where you are, making one change at a time. Maybe one new recipe at a time, and one meal at a time. For instance, just start eating more fresh fruit, or more seeds and nuts. And try to include beans or lentils every day. Not only are they delicious and filling, but they really help you prevent all that is not great health... Fruits and vegetables provide us with fiber, vitamins, minerals and plant compounds, which are thought to be responsible for many health benefits. Observational studies show that higher fruit and vegetable intake is linked to a lower risk of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, arthritis and some brain disorders (6Trusted Source, 7Trusted Source, 8Trusted Source). Increased fruit intake is also linked to lower blood pressure, reduced oxidative stress and improved blood sugar control (9Trusted Source, 10Trusted Source). One review found that for each daily portion of fruit or vegetables consumed, the risk of heart disease decreased by 4–7% (11Trusted Source). Beans and Legumes Experts believe that the high soluble fiber content and the wide range of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants in beans and legumes may help reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes and certain cancers (17Trusted Source, 18Trusted Source, 19Trusted Source). Eating one serving of legumes like beans, peas and chickpeas each day has been linked to 5% lower LDL cholesterol levels and a 5-6% lower risk of heart disease (20Trusted Source). Nuts and Seeds Nuts and seeds are high in antioxidants, minerals and healthy fats. (12:00) They discuss the benefits of seeing for yourself how certain foods like oatmeal affect your blood glucose. You only really need it for approximately a month in order to see how foods affect you. A CGM is the most valuable investment you can make for your metabolic health. Cynthia shares how she was attacked by a prominent cardiologist for recommending CGMs to people. (20:30) Not surprisingly, that same cardiologist was found to have associations with Big Pharma. They agree that there is value in N=1 experimentation to see what works. (23:30) As we learn, we should be doing better. Cynthia recommends reading “” by Robb Wolf and Diana Rogers. They also discuss how public policy has been made that affects nutrition, such as Meatless Monday in schools. (25:30) School lunches have become carb-filled crap. Metabolic health depends on protein and healthy fats. (33:00) THE IMPACT OF ESTROGEN Perimenopause is 10-15 years leading up to menopause. Menopause is 1 year without a cycle and beyond. (37:30) If you are a woman in your late 30s or early 40s you're “there”. Cynthia recommends as another source of information. It is extremely important to build and maintain muscle; less muscle means less insulin sensitivity. Cynthia recommends breaking a fast with 30 grams of protein, and a daily intake to be 100 grams of protein. (41:20) The impact of estrogen is important: low estrogen causes various issues, including muscle loss. The limiting beliefs of women around lifting and building muscle can be discouraging, but they are wrong! (44:20) Vinnie talks about Serena and ultra-running, chronic aerobics, and how it changed her body. (46:00) She discovered pilates, barre, and "solid core" and it has made great differences in her muscles. Find the work you're willing to do to help build and maintain strength. Episode 2285 - On this Friday's show, Vinnie Tortorich speaks with Drs. Laura Buchanan and Matt Calkins about the Food Compass, metabolic health, how to "right the ship" in healthcare, and more. https://vinnietortorich.com/2023/01/right-ship-drs-laura-buchanan-matt-calkins-epsiode-2285 PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS RIGHT THE SHIP Vinnie welcomes the couple back to the show, and they start off addressing the Food Compass recently put out by Tufts University. (2:00) There is a pandemic in metabolic health that needs to be addressed. (9:00) Some people have taken better control by using a CGM (continuous glucose monitor) to see immediate results of how certain foods affect them. Vinnie suggests that there needs to be a lot more doctors that are coming into the system with better nutritional knowledge. (13:30) There needs to be continued advocation for low-carb lifestyles; Vinnie hopes that incoming doctors will "right the ship." Vinnie asks what Laura and Matt are seeing as they start their careers in medicine. Laura has trained directly under prominent low-carb doctors. Vinnie believes that it's necessary for intelligent discourse among doctors. Matt shares a couple of points about T2D and outpatient treatment that are important for success, even from 5 years ago. (35:20) They talk about how today's medical curriculum still needs to be updated. They also emphasize the need to create a "new normal" of people not needing so many medications. They discuss how policies like "Meatless Mondays" in schools are bad policies; the people become an experiment. (49:00) There have been cases where children have died from being on a vegan diet from lack of proper nutrients; as a result, there are places in Europe that have banned children from being put on vegan diets. You can find both Dr. Laura Buchanan and Dr. Matt Calkins on Twitter and other platforms. Laura is on Twitter ; on Dr. Tro's website ; and on Substack "AgingSuccesfully" .
