In this episode, we're joined by Dr. Suthana, a leading neuroscientist from UCLA's David Geffen School of Medicine and the Jane & Terry Semel Institute for Neuroscience & Human Behavior. Dr. Suthana's career sits at the intersection of neuroscience, neural technology, and engineering, focusing on memory disorders and innovative brain technologies. We explore her groundbreaking research on memory enhancement through deep brain stimulation (DBS), focusing on a study where stimulation of the entorhinal cortex enhanced memory retention during learning. She also delves into the challenges of translating laboratory findings into real-world clinical improvements. In a truly unique part of her work, Dr. Suthana uses virtual reality (VR) and mobile tech to study memory in naturalistic settings. Her lab even developed a custom backpack system, allowing participants to move freely while recording real-time brain activity to better understand memory and spatial navigation. We also discuss her recent work on PTSD, where she uses responsive stimulation in the amygdala to help reduce trauma-triggered responses. Dr. Suthana expresses her excitement about the future of wearable tech and how it might revolutionize the field by combining real-time data collection with neurostimulation. Tune in for an inspiring look at the future of neuromodulation and memory enhancement as Dr. Suthana shares her vision and insights into this cutting-edge field.

In this episode of The Human Upgrade, Dr. Manoj Doss, a neuroscientist at the University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School, explores the fascinating intersection of psychedelics, memory, and cognitive enhancement. Drawing from his extensive research, Dr. Doss dives into how psychoactive substances like THC, ketamine, and psychedelics can alter memory formation, consolidation, and retrieval. He challenges the conventional understanding of memory by revealing how these substances might disrupt traditional memory processes while potentially opening new pathways for learning and cognition. You'll discover how different drugs impact your brain's ability to encode and recall information, the surprising effects of psychedelics on semantic and episodic memory, and the role of the hippocampus in shaping our personal narratives. Dr. Doss also delves into the potential benefits and risks of cognitive enhancers like nicotine and modafinil, offering insights into their effects on memory and brain function. Dr. Doss provides a nuanced perspective on the malleability of memory, the ethical implications of memory manipulation, and the complex relationship between trauma, memory, and psychedelics. Huberman Lab Podcast Notes Key Takeaways New memories are formed through repetition or immensely positive/negative eventsEmotionality and emotion experienced after an event dictates whether you will learn it quicklyMemories are formed because of a neurochemical state (release of adrenaline, cortisol, epinephrine, norepinephrine) that takes place following an emotion – not because something evokes emotion itselfTiming of caffeine for memory and learning enhancement matters: consume caffeine immediately after or 5-15 minutes after repetitionTo optimize learning: immediately after learning, put the body into a heightened state of emotionality and alertness (e.g., caffeine, cold exposure); hours later, a nap (28-90 minutes) or non-sleep deep rest is critical for learning and memoryAnything that increases adrenaline will increase learning and memory and reduce the number of repetitions required to learn something (regardless of whether there's emotion attached)Anything that reduces epinephrine and adrenaline will impair learningChronic stress and elevation of epinephrine are detrimental to memory and learning (among many other things)Physical movement can enhance cognitive ability and ability to learn new skills – shoot for 180-200 minutes of zone 2 cardio per week and a few sessions of load-bearing exercise per weekTaking a mental snapshot (blinking and imagining you are taking a photo of something) actually stamps down visual memory almost as much as taking an actual photoMeditation can improve attention, memory, mood, and emotion regulation but timing matters! If you meditate too late, it may actually hinder sleep because you are in a calm but highly attentional stateAs always, start with behavioral tools before exploring pharmacologyRead the full notes @ podcastnotes.orgThis episode I explain the mechanisms by which different types of memories are established in our brain and how to leverage the amount and timing of key neurochemicals and hormones, such as adrenaline (aka epinephrine) and cortisol, to improve your learning and memory abilities. I describe multiple science-based protocols to do this, including repetition, caffeine, emotional states, deliberate cold exposure, sleep, meditation, and the role of vision, including taking “mental snapshots.” I also describe how exercise and an associated hormone, osteocalcin, can improve cognitive ability and memory formation. I also describe unique aspects and forms of memory such as photographic memory, extreme facial recognition (aka super recognition), and the phenomenon known as déjà vu. This episode I explain the mechanisms by which different types of memories are established in our brain and how to leverage the amount and timing of key neurochemicals and hormones, such as adrenaline (aka epinephrine) and cortisol, to improve your learning and memory abilities. My guest in today's podcast is (yes, that's his real name). Jim Kwik is really, really...well...quick. He can learn much faster than mere mortals. Take reading, for example. Most folks read at a rate of 200-250 words-per-minute (wpm). But Jim reads heavy science material at about 500 wpm and devours light fiction at upwards of 1300 wpm. And more importantly, he can remember everything he reads. I'm seen Jim on stage, memorizing the names of every face in the crowd. And long strings of random numbers. Many people struggle to remember all seven digits of a phone number. But Jim can remember phone numbers all day long. Hundreds of them. But Jim isn't special. He doesn't naturally have these superpowers. They were learned. And if he can learn them, anyone can learn them - regardless of age, background or education. In today's podcast, you're going to discover the amazing story of how Jim went from a childhood brain injury to being one the smartest guys with one of the fastest brains on the face of the planet.  During our discussion, you'll discover: -How Jim became a memory and learning expert, even after a debilitating head injury... -Why you shouldn't let school get in the way of your education... -Whether it's true that we only use part of our brains... -How technology can make you stupid if you use it incorrectly... -The three stages of learning you must know... -The exact process and system Jim uses when he sits down to learn a new skill or task or language... -What you can learn from Jim's recent conversation with Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger... -Five easy ways you can remember names better... -Jim's top tips for becoming a speed-reader who actually remembers what you read... -The specific diet Jim follows to help his brain achieve peak function... -The 4 free videos that you can get from ... -And much more! More about Jim: Jim is founder of Kwik Learning and a widely recognized world expert in speed-reading, memory improvement, brain performance and accelerated learning. For two decades he has served as the mental coach to students and seniors, entrepreneurs and educators, and advisor to many of the world’s leading CEOs and celebrities. After a childhood brain injury left him learning challenged, Jim created strategies to dramatically enhance his mental performance. He has since dedicated his life to helping others unleash their true genius and brainpower to learn anything faster and live a life of greater power, productivity and purpose. Jim’s cutting edge techniques, entertaining presentation style, and impressive brainpower feats have made him a frequent and highly sought out trainer for top organizations, with clients that include Virgin, Nike, Zappos, SpaceX, NYU, GE, Fox Studios, Harvard, and Singularity University, and his online courses are used by students in over 100 countries. Do you have questions, comments or feedback about speed-reading, enhancing memory, learning new things faster or anything else Jim and I discuss?
