So, should you include pay in your driver adverts? Why is using a stock photo a bad decision for a driver recruitment post? And what can you do to improve your marketing efforts and improve the quality of leads coming in.  “One of the things that we're doing differently is we're actually marketing a driver assessment. And then we're spending money on the drivers that pass that assessment. I know they're a higher quality driver, because the data is showing that the drivers that pass these assessments do stick around longer.” Finally, how do you attract drivers who aren't looking to change jobs? If you're not sure how to differentiate your carrier (hint - be unique). Or if you have a very small marketing budget, then download and listen to this latest episode and take advantage of not one, but three perspectives on how to up your marketing efforts.  “People don't necessarily move because something is better. When we're using a lot of social media for advertising, it does have to stand out. Otherwise it doesn't filter through the noise.” What you'll learn about in this episode: How to write effective FB ads The importance of language in marketing Why you should highlight your internal core values in your ads How to improve the quality of your leads Marketing tips on a small budget How to connect with guests: Leah Shaver Brad Jones Drive My Way

Just how important are pay and company culture when recruiting and retaining drivers?  Joining Chad to discuss these hot topics are three very special guests from the Iowa Motor Truck Association - Leah Shaver, President and CEO of the National Transportation Institute; Brad Jones, President and CEO of Saige Partners, a driver talent acquisition firm; and Beth Potratz, CEO for Drive My Way.  If you're struggling to recruit or retain drivers, it's usually to do with one of three things: pay, marketing or company culture, with pay being the number one driver pain point.  But just what is the most impactful thing carriers can do when it comes to pay to get drivers to come on board? Pay market rate, consistently. Drivers want to know how much they're going to get paid, when they're going to get paid, and when they're going to get a pay rise.  “I feel like most companies think if I just had the highest pay, I would get the drivers. But we know there are companies out there that are the highest payers, but the drivers are not necessarily just flocking to those companies.” And it's not just pay that helps retain drivers. The driver's relationship with the organization and their dispatcher, how they're shown respect at work, whether the carrier puts their core values into actions. These aspects of workplace culture are vital to recruiting and retaining drivers.  “If you were to send a mass email out to your entire organization and ask what your core values are, how many people would have to Google those to determine what they are?” To hear all this and more, don't miss this latest episode of Recruit and Retain.  What you'll learn about in this episode: Why consistent pay is essential The lower the pay, the higher the turnover High pay does not guarantee drivers The driver/dispatcher relationship What respect in the workplace looks like How to connect with the guests: Leah Shaver Brad Jones Drive My Way

Today I'm so excited to chat with Livia, one of my students and a kickass stylist and business owner.Get this: She graduated from hair school in 2018 and opened her first salon in 2019. AND she hired her first employee. She's also quadrupled her income in the past two years, and she's only 20!To top it all off, she even lives in my hometown and we graduated from the same high school just a *few* years apart! (Okay, more like, 20 years apart...but I digress).Livia is a master of taking massive leaps and doing business HER way, so I wanted to talk to her about how she managed to start on the right foot at such a young age, and in a small town. Here's what you'll hear in this episode:Livia's journey and how she found the courage to take the leap into her own business. How she handles the challenge of not being taken seriously as a salon owner because of her age. What she's doing differently from the typical small-town salon. (Like giving herself time off. Unheard of!)Why “paying your dues” is bullshit. The guilt of doing well (this is totally a thing).A rundown of some of her most amazing business accomplishments. (This is totally possible for you too!)Why consultations are the best thing ever (I can't say this enough!)How to stay open to opportunities so you can grow!Plus lots of bonding over our hometown :)I wish I could go back in time and hire Livia as my mentor when I first started out! It's incredible what she's been able to do in just two years of being a hairstylist. I love that she's totally snubbing industry “norms” (like working yourself to death) because it's made such a difference in her business growth! If you get nothing else from this episode, I hope it's this: you don't have to do business the way everyone else does it. It's okay to be different! For more Livia, check out her website and follow her on Instagram!LINKS MENTIONED:https://www.dawnbradley.com/rychttps://livnthedreamhaircompany.ca/https://www.instagram.com/livnthedreamhairco/

In this episode, Aaron Potratz and Nathan Hawkins join the podcast to discuss starting a partnership in private practice. They reveal some vital things you will need to know before committing to a partnership; you especially need to know the identity of your practice and where you see your business going. Later, the two explain why there is no competition between them and the importance of trust in a partnership. Meet Nathan Hawkins Nathan Hawkins is a Licensed Professional Counselor and has been working in the field for almost 17 years. He is a certified trauma professional and performs EMDR and also utilizes Hypnosis at times as well. He is an approved clinical supervisor in the state of Oregon. He is the owner of Life Encounter Counseling which he established in 2004. While maintaining his own client load he supervises the clinical and administrative work of 4 employees and a clinical intern program.  The success of Life Encounter Counseling birthed a passion to multiply the work of counseling in different ways. One of those directions leads to him co-founding another private group counseling practice, Life Discovery Counseling Services with Aaron Potratz in 2016. Life Discovery Counseling Services has grown from 1 location to 2 successful locations that serve opposite sides of the Portland Metro.  He supervises and manages the counselors and staff in both of those locations with Aaron. Nathan loves to teach and also intermittently fills in at Multnomah University as an Adjunct Clinical Supervision Professor. Meet Aaron Potratz Aaron is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Oregon, the owner of Discover Counseling, and co-owner of Life Discovery Counseling Services – two private group counseling practices. Aaron maintains his own client caseload while also managing and supervising his counseling staff. He started out as a solo practitioner in 2007, expanded to a group practice in 2015, and started his second practice with his business partner, Nathan Hawkins, in 2016. Between the two businesses, he has 10 clinicians and one support staff. Aaron also does consulting for small businesses, helping them become more efficient and productive. He especially enjoys helping other therapist business owners grow their practices and focus in on the areas they are most passionate about. Building Trust Nathan and Aaron get along really well. There went through a honeymoon phase; however, there wasn't much depth at first. As time went on, they had to lean on each other and give each other additional information. Plus, they were vulnerable when speaking about their businesses and gave honest feedback about the direction of their companies. They play up each other's strengths and complement each other's weaknesses. Integrating Practices When Nathan and Aaron first started with the shared space, they had a lot to think about, like rent, square footage, and office space. It is easy to make assumptions when you find a partner – even small things need to be discussed. Nathan and Aaron have separate businesses. However, the way they treat their employees is identical. These people are in the same space, so they need to be treated equally. When you are dreaming about combining practices, this may not be something you think about upfront. Competition You know what you're good at, and you stick with those things. Aaron and Nathan have niched down and found what they do well. They both know what clients they work best with. If a client doesn't fit one practice, then they will refer them to the other practice. Getting competitive with other therapists doesn't make sense; there are more than enough clients out there for everyone. We will be doing a disservice if we are not giving our clients the right therapist. Tips for Starting a Partnership Both Aaron and Nathan have their own identities for their businesses. One reason they got together is because of how isolating private practice can be. However, it would be best if you spent some time understanding what you like to do on your own. Do not be in a big hurry to get together with another practice. You have to know who you are on your own before starting a partnership. Plus, Aaron and Nathan say how essential, to be honest, and open with your partner. Paul Potratz from PPADV.com shares the unique way he runs his business and sets up his company culture where he encourages his employees to make their own decisions and mistakes (including the interview process for that). He tells us how to build a quality brand, get back to basics, and provide a "Nordstrom" customer service instead of a "Macy's" one. Compete based on your brand, not on price! Sounds like lots of good stuff. How are things today Paul? Paul Potratz: Good. Good. How about you Robert? Robert Plank: Super fantastic. I see you're in upstate New York. I was there about a year ago. I fell and broke my ankle in two places there, so I don't think I'll be going back. Paul Potratz: That's not the norm here. I mean it's a bunch of Italian food and senior citizens. Robert Plank: May I just had to go to your exact city, not just the general area maybe. Paul Potratz: That's probably what it was, yeah. Robert Plank: In your general area of Schenectady, New York and wherever else the world takes you, what would you say that it is that you do and what makes you different and special? Paul Potratz: We work with business owners, but we work with business owners establishing a brand and getting new clients. That's kind of it in a nutshell. That's our ad agency portion. In the last few months I've started to expand out of that because the agency does well. What I mean by expanding is working with business owners or future business owners of how to get their business going. Robert Plank: Okay. Do you have any cool stories ... Do you have any cool, interesting, almost like cutting edge things that you're doing to help these businesses recently? Paul Potratz: Yeah. Matter of fact I do. I'm asked that question a lot, what's cool, what's new, what's cutting edge? We can definitely talk about dynamic retargeting and gmail ads. We have workshops here at our office a lot and what I've done is I'm like let's go back to the basics, because with all the new technology and everything we forget about the basics of how to answer to phone, how to actually proof our emails, how to send emails, how to build an email data base ... To kind of take all that back, because there's so many things swirling through my head, it's all about brand. I feel like that's what people are missing because of all the online ... The digital marketing pay-per-click, is they don't establish a brand, and if you don't establish a brand all you have is sell by price, die by price. Robert Plank: What should be people be doing to establish that brand? Paul Potratz: You've got to decide what is it that you ... What is your product, what is your service and how does it improve one's lives. You've got to decide how does it really help someone. The workshop I was in a few weeks ago ... I was in Virginia and I was trying to get the business owners to understand how does your product or service improve somebody's life. I gave them a little test or a task to do to come up, work together in groups, and they just couldn't get out of the sales pitch. That's what they wanted to do, is pitch their product and not talk about how their product or service was going to help somebody save time, save money, improve their life. Robert Plank: They were lacking what's in it for me then? Paul Potratz: Exactly. You've got to think selfish. You've got to turn yourself around and not only in that negative, but you've got think why does someone want to do business with you other than price. Most business owners,
