Show SummaryOn today's episode, we're featuring a conversation with Marine Corps Veteran Dr. Derek Abbey, President and CEO of Project Recover, the nation's leading citizen-led non-profit organization to search, locate, document, recover, and repatriate the over 81,500 American service members missing in action. Provide FeedbackAs a dedicated member of the audience, we would like to hear from you about the show. Please take a few minutes to share your thoughts about the show in this short feedback survey. By doing so, you will be entered to receive a signed copy of one of our host's three books on military and veteran mental health. About Today's GuestDerek Abbey, Ph.D. is Project Recover's President and CEO. He served for 23 years in the United States Marine Corps. His academic research and his post-military career have focused on connecting veterans with college opportunities, He began as Project Recover team member in 2004 and spent five years on the Board of Directors before being appointed as President / CEO.Derek Abbey grew up in Seattle. He was the only child of a single mom doing the best she could to raise a “rambunctious boy.”  Her unexpected death when Derek was 13 turned his life upside-down. For four years, he lived primarily with his aunt and uncle. Finally, at 17, Derek ran away to the Marine Corps. Derek Abbey had been without a rudder and sail for most of his life. In the USMC, he found a structure and system he could succeed in.First, he enlisted in the Marine Corps as a communicator. After his initial enlistment, the Marine Corps selected him for a commissioning program and sent him to Oregon State University to earn a degree. Upon receiving his degree he was commissioned as a ground officer. Finally, Derek was selected for an aviation contract while completing the six months long Basic School. This combination of events, going into the military and then to college, set the stage for Derek's academic and professional accomplishments. It also is the seed that gave rise to a passion for connecting veterans with educational opportunities. It is also, of course, the precursor which led up to his current role with Project Recover.Derek Abbey attended flight school in Pensacola FL and graduated as a Naval Flight Officer. He was then sent to the F/A-18 Hornet Fleet Replacement Squadron at MCAS Miramar where he earned his designation as an F/A-18 Weapons Systems Officer. He was then immediately assigned to his first squadron, VMFA(AW)-121, and deployed for Operation Southern Watch and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Over the next few years, he deployed two more times to Iraq and once to the Far East. He holds more combat hours in the Hornet than hours in peaceful skies. After an extended and successful tour in the Hornet, Derek left flight operations to become a Plank Owner (original member) at Marine Corps Special Operations Command as the Air Officer for the 1st Marine Special Operations Battalion, now 1st Raider Battalion. During this period with the Marine Raiders, he served in Marine Special Operations Company Delta and was deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom as their Forward Air Controller, Special Operations JTAC, and Executive Officer. In 2009, Derek was selected by the Marine Corps for the Advanced Degree Program and assigned to the University of San Diego. “In 2009-2011, there was a huge influx of military into higher education. Universities were figuring out how to work with these populations.” While earning a Masters in Higher Education Leadership, Derek conducted research on how universities and colleges work with military-connected students on their campuses. His thesis provided best practices for colleges to use in creating successful military programs on their campuses. In his twilight tour from 2011-2014, Derek served as the Director of the Marine Corps' Train the Trainer School in Camp Lejeune, NC. His organization was responsible for the training and education of instructors, curriculum developers, staff and leadership of 93 training units across the Marine Corps. Derek retired from the USMC as a Major in 2014. Shortly thereafter, he began his doctorate in Leadership Studies at the University of San Diego. Derek focused again on conducting practical research that would help make higher education more accessible to veterans, the majority of whom would be first-generation college students. His research has garnered national attention and resulted in multiple speaking engagements. Derek earned his Ph.D. in 2019.Upon retiring from the Marine Corps, Derek began working at San Diego State University as a Military Liaison Officer in the Joan and Art Barron Veterans Center. In this position, he focused on outreach to the military-connected students in the region in order to provide guidance for them attaining their higher education goals. In 2015, he took over the Military and Veterans Program at The University of San Diego.  During his time with USD, he created and implemented programming that resulted in the growth of the military-connected population by 30% and the program being recognized as one at the top in the nation. Derek was the advocate for this population not only at USD but on other campuses in the region through the Military Ally program and with organizations across the nation attempting to provide better educational guidance for the military population.  In 2017, Derek took over West Coast Operations for the Travis Manion Foundation (TMF) as the Senior Director of the West and Northwest Regions. TMF is a veterans service organization that works to unite the American community through programming that emphasizes the value of strong character. In this role, he oversaw the strategy development, program implementation and expansion, budget execution, and evaluation in TMF's largest geographical region. Links Mentioned in this Episode Project Recover Web SitePsychArmor Resource of the WeekFor this week's PsychArmor resource of the week is an episode of the Behind the Mission Podcast, episode 153 with Christina Slentz and the League of Wives Memorial Project. Dr. John Moser meet with Derek Abbey, President & CEO of Project Recover, a non-profit organization that searches for still-missing American service members around the world. Focused traditionally on the Palau islands and lost airmen from World War 2, Project Recover has expanded operations over the last 30 years to include efforts in Vietnam, elsewhere in the Pacific, and even at sites in the Atlantic. Over 80,000 Americans are still missing and unaccounted for from our many wars, with about 3/4 of that number from World War 2 alone - and most of that number from among those who fought in the Pacific. Sadly, although America moved on after 1945, the families of so many of those missing did not, and some of them still have not. Project Recover, working closely with State Department and Defense Department efforts, carries the torch, in search of closure for those who never had a body to bury, or a grave at which to mourn a lost loved one. #ww2 #palau #peleliu #projectrecover Learn more about Project Recover and their good work: https://www.projectrecover.org/ Find out more about their recent documentary, "To What Remains" - https://www.projectrecover.org/film-to-what-remains/ Host: Jeff Sikkenga Executive Producer: Greg McBrayer Producer: Jeremy Gypton Subscribe: https://linktr.ee/theamericanidea

Pat Scannon is one among the few who have earned a Ph.D. and then, separately, an M.D. His passion for both chemistry and medicine goes back to his childhood roots. His father was a US Army Colonel and his Romanian-born mother went to medical school in Leipzig during World War II. Pat spent memorable years growing up in post-war Europe. Years later, he earned his BS in Chemistry from the University of Georgia. He was in R.O.T.C and received a commission as a 2nd Lt. in the U.S. Army upon graduation. Then he earned a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley. A few months before his graduation, Pat realized the potential of using his chemistry training in medicine during an era pre-biotech and decided to apply to medical school. He returned to his home state and spent the second half of the 1970's earning his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia. Pat is a board-certified physician in Internal Medicine. He completed his residency and fulfilled his military duty as a major at the Letterman Army Medical Center and the Letterman Army Institute of Research on the Presidio of San Francisco. Pat founded Project Recover, formerly BentProp, after a trip to Palau in 1993. He and his wife, Susan, a dive instructor, were invited there to help locate the Japanese trawler George H.W. Bush sunk in 1944. They found the trawler more quickly than expected and documented it had been an armed vessel. After the rest of the dive team left, Pat hired a guide to show them other artifacts from World War II. It was then that Pat first saw the 65-foot wing of an American B-24 bomber lying in shallow water along a coral island in Palau. Other than leading him to it, the guide could give Pat no information about the wing. For Pat, the wing was more than a hunk of metal. It represented a forgotten battle and brave men who had fought and died there. It represented stories lost to the chaos of war, the annals of time, and the secret stillness of a watery grave. All were stories unknown to the airmen's families. This moment marks the inception of The BentProp Project which is now known as Project Recover. Project Recover is a collaborative effort to enlist 21st-century science and technology in a quest to find and repatriate Americans missing in action since World War II, in order to provide recognition and closure for families and the Nation.

Derek Abbey, PhD joins me again!  I enjoyed my last conversation so much with Derek, I invited him back to share his research on transitioning into the veteran space. Derek says that there are important stages we should all go through in order to help us mature as well-functioning adults. The military sets the perfect conditions by providing almost everything we need as adults. It provides community, a way to progress through rank and accomplishment, and makes many of our decisions for us.    Although the military “saved his life”, Derek shares what he has learned from helping veterans take the next big step in their lives in higher education and helping veterans take the next big step in their lives. The result was a fascinating conversation on what we all need to do to evolve to a better version of ourselves.    Derek Abbey, PhD is a retired Marine and CEO of  Project Recover.   Find resources for your service marriage at www.life-giver.org Interested in joining the Lifegiver Facebook group to discuss this episode and more? 176: Derek Abby: Former U.S. Marine with three deployments to Iraq and one deployment to Afghanistan and the President and CEO of Project Recover talks about making the transition from being a young military member at age 18 to the role that education has played in his current work in locating missing military members.    Derek Abby    How did Derek Abby deal with his parents divorcing early on in his life and his mother dying when he was only 13?  “As a 13-year-old, you don’t usually deal with it very well. You don’t have the tools for it. There is no rule book you can read or anything like that, especially back then, and it was completely unexpected. My mom was there, healthy one day, and then had a brain aneurysm and was gone the following day. So, my life was turned upside down. I was 13, completely lost my rotor and sail, didn’t really know what direction I was going to go in. I ended up going and living with my aunt and uncle.” On this episode of Finding Your Summit Podcast, we talk with Derek Abby, Former U.S. Marine with three deployments to Iraq and one deployment to Afghanistan and the President and CEO of Project Recover about how he ended up joining the Marine Corp. “I never really had aspirations of joining the military. Although, when I was young I kind of looked up to men that had served in the military and they were these role models to me in some ways. In most ways they were fantasies because they weren’t really people to me. But, I ran away to the Marine Corp. Honestly, I needed a place to go.”    What You Will Learn: Even though Derek Abby didn’t grow up dreaming about being a soldier, it looked like the best option to get his life situated for success. “I was looking at the military because it was an escape. It was something to get me out of where I was. I looked to the military, and I saw the Marine Corp., and honestly like so many young people, they had the best uniforms, and it seemed like the hardest. It seemed like the biggest challenge. I found myself in the recruiters office, and that was an easy sell. Not too long after that I was in boot camp.” What was going on in the world when Derek Abby joined the military? “There was another thing that was going on. When I signed up Saddam Hussein had crossed the border into Kuwait, and we were dealing with him with Desert Storm and Desert Shield. So, he invaded on August 2nd, and on August 30th was when I signed the papers. That was kind of the extra motivation, a way to prove myself, a way to go on and play my part, do something of value, really.” Derek Abby describes what his career trajectory in the Marine Corp. was like. “I was a successful young Marine and I invested in the Marine Corp. I truly gave my heart and soul to it. In turn they invested in me. So, I got an education. I ended up getting a commission and then was commissioned to Ground Officer, actually. All Marines have to go through a six-month school called the Basic School where you learned basic infantry tactics and company-level officer stuff. While I was there, I was selected for Flight School and ended up getting sent to Flight School and became a Marine Aviator.”   What exactly is a Plank Holder in the military? “It is an original member. So, when they establish a unit, the very first people in that unit are considered ‘plank holders.’ It comes from the nautical tradition, the Navy tradition of the Marine Corp., the planks of the ships. I was part of the First Battalion, which is now the First Raider Battalion. It was First Marines Special Operations Battalion when it started, and the first Delta Company over there. I started as a First Battalion Air Officer while we were building out the battalion. Then when we started Delta Company I became the Air Officer for Delta Company, and ultimately the X of Delta Company and deployed to Afghanistan.” In what way did Derek Abby connect his education to his military experience? “I wanted to examine what was the thing that was causing all of this friction for military members when they are separating, and it turns out, for the most part, beyond injuries and things like that, both mental and physical injuries. It is these intangible pieces. So it is that perceived loss of identity and exploring what other identities you hold, having those intimate relationships that you gain and maintain through shared experience, through shared hardship. All of those things going on, deployment, depending on others. Same thing growing up as an athlete, committing your life to it. Then you step out of that system and now you have to find what that new legacy is going to be. What is that new impact or what is your new purpose?”    Project Recover in Action  Derek Abby defines what Project Recover is and the objectives that they have as part of their overall mission. “Project Recover is a non-profit organization and we search for Americans missing in action in our previous wars. That goes all the way back to World War II. Most people don’t realise, but there are 82,000 Americans still missing in action, and when they hear POW  MIA., things like that, most times they think of Vietnam and that is realistic. But, of those 82,000, 72,000 are from World War II, 7,000 are from the Korean conflict, and now less than 1,600 remain M.I.A. from the Vietnam conflict. We have done work mostly in the World War II era sites. But we have come all the way up to Desert Storm.”   Finding Missing U.S. Military Personnel   During this episode of Finding Your Summit Podcast, Derek Abby also discusses how Project Recover goes about locating missing military members. “We gather information year-round and we do search missions throughout the world based on the information and the data that we gather and we search for sites. We identify those sites. Who is associated with those sites? Traditionally we have turned that information over to the Department of Defense. Their organization is called the Defense POW MIA Accounting Agency, DPAA. They have made the decision to do recovery on those sites that we have located. But now our mission has expanded into recovery and cooperation with DPAA. So we are doing everything from initial research, searching the waters and jungles all over the world for these people who are missing.”   Links to Additional Resources: Mark Pattison: markpattisonnfl.com Emilia’s Everest - The Lhotse Challenge: https://www.markpattisonnfl.com/philanthropy/ Project Recover’s website: projectrecover.org Derek Abby’s social media: Linkedin Mark Pattison: Instagram
