It’s totally free, and you’ll be able to learn right along with us and even get some of your own questions answered in the process. So what are you waiting for?! Today we’re going to talk about the best email promotion strategies during the holidays. I get questions regarding this topic often and figured it would be a good time to cover this with the holidays fast approaching. Build a Relationship With Your List Before Launching a Promotion If you are thinking about sending out a promotion to your email list, don’t expect it to be successful if you just send out an email with your promotion. There are some things to consider and to prepare before you ever send anything out. If you don’t have an email list, you’ll definitely want one to take full advance of the practices that I’m sharing with you today. If you need help building your list, sign up for our new email list building fast track workshop. You’ll be able to grow your list to 500 subscribers in just 30 days. It’s much easier than you might think. Before you ever send a hardcore promotional to your email list, you need to let them know you are there to give them valuable information. Use the know, like, and trust method. Make sure people know who you are, like what you’re providing them, and know that they can trust you and what you have to offer. All before you ever ask them for anything in return. In the beginning, provide 90% value and 10% promotion. As you gear up for a promotion, you can focus an additional 10% on your promotional efforts but not much more than that. Steps to Prepare for Your Promotion Before you ever start advertising your promotion, there are a few things that you need to do beforehand that will ensure that you see the most success. Step 1: Create an Offer They Can’t Refuse You need to have a great offer to share when you send out a promotion. A 10% discount isn’t going to get anyone excited to sign up or purchase your product. If you’re selling a physical product, you could give them a free digital product, a bonus, or an instructional video to go along with their purchase. During a promotion, an incredible offer is going to get your subscribers to take action and purchase your product. So, take some time to really think about what you could offer to motive them to buy. Step 2: Explain the Timing of Your Offer Explain to your subscribers why you are offering this promotion and explain the timing. If you’re offering a holiday promotion, explain why you decided to launch it on a specific day that you did. If you only have a limited supply, be sure to mention that as well. Step 3: Establish a Deadline There needs to be some scarcity in place for your product. People always react to deadlines. It’s human nature. Make sure that you give your subscribers enough time to get excited and think about your promotion, though. Give them a heads up before you launch your promotion, even if it’s only two or three days before. You want to build up some excitement, so they’re ready and willing to take action when your promotion is live. Emails to Send Out During Your Promotion Email #1: Let your subscribers know that something is coming and to be ready Email #2: Send the day that you launch the email. Remind them why you’re offering a promotion and how long it’ll be available. Not everyone reads all of your emails, so make sure that you’re very clear about the promotion and deadline in all of your related emails. Email #3: Send out the second day of the promotion. Remind your subscribers about the promotion in case they missed the first couple of emails or haven’t made a purchase yet. Email #4-6: Send the day the deal is going to end. In every one of these emails, you’ll see that some people will click on the email and subscribe, and others will ask to be removed from your list. Don’t let those people who unsubscribe get to you. If you’ve provided them with valuable content, you’ve done everything you can, and they just don’t see the value that you offer. However, there are plenty of other people who will see the value and purchase because of it. If you’re doing a three-day promotion on the final day, you can send two to three emails. Send one in the morning, one in the late afternoon, and one three to four hours before the promotion ends. It’s that simple. This method really does work. In 2003 I started list building using a fishbowl. I had people put their emails in a fishbowl and raffled off a free photo session. We had to manually enter in all of their emails and blind copy everyone when we sent out emails. That was our email marketing back then, and it worked! Because we did promotions, we were able to sell out our holiday seasons in July each year. They really are powerful if you do them correctly. It’s the same concept in 2020. Email is a great way to reach your audience whenever you want. If you do it right and deliver value all year long, you can successfully promote your offers, and it will do well. Questions From The Take Action Crew Q: When creating my lead magnet, should I create it in a word or pdf format? A: You always want to create a pdf. If you send out a word document, it’ll show up differently for every user. Q: Do I need to have a minimum number of subscribers to sign up for an affiliate program? A: If you’re signing up for Amazon’s affiliate program, you don’t need to have a list. However, keep in mind they want you to send people to their website. To get around this, create a blog post about the products you’re promoting and take people back to your post, so you have more control over that traffic. If you’re signing up for a private brand’s affiliate program, they may look at the size of your list. But for the most part, they dont care as long as you’re sending their affiliate link out to your targeted audience and people are using it. Q: What are your thoughts about a VIP email list? A: I’m not a huge fan, and I personally wouldn’t build my email list using a VIP list model. However, there are times it can be useful. This is a list that is hyper-targeted. If you have a list where you build a pre-launch list, you’ll let people know that you’re sending out the promotion to the early bird list. This will only work if you have a limited quantity. Q: How often should I offer discounts to my subscribers? A: You shouldn’t always be offering discounts. This is where bonuses come in handy. But also make sure to avoid being predictable. You don’t want people to wait around to purchase because they know what type of promotion you’ll be launching down the road. I hope that you enjoyed this week’s edition of our Friday jam session. Check out these episode highlights: 01:04 - Marcia’s ideal client: “I work with leaders, potential leaders, high achievers, and people with big dreams but working in organizations, whether large or small.” 01:23 - Problem Marcia helps solve: “You know, they get stuck in their brain. It gets all foggy and the more emotions we have, the less we can see through the fog. And so, what I help them to do is just to bring their thinking out and take a look at it. And if we can look at it out here, then they can see what's getting in the way of them making their choices taking action.” 02:27 - Typical symptoms that clients do before reaching out to Marcia: “They feel stuck. They often feel these days overwhelmed. I don't know where to start. And so, they come to the call, my coaching call with, like, tons of things, "I need you to do this, I need you to do this." 03:07 - Common mistakes that people make before they find Marcia’s solution: “They take either the easy way out like they have a difficult conversation coming up, and they find all the reasons not to do it. Or they do what they've always done in the past and even though it doesn't work, it's the known and not the unknown.” 03:46 - Marcia’s Valuable Free Action (VFA): “Even though we're not even out in the world yet fully with the pandemic, people are still moving too fast. And so really, it's just taking a pause.” 04:47 - Marcia’s Valuable Free Resource (VFR): Check out Marcia’s Website: https://covisioning.com/outsmart-your-brain-book/ 05:31 - Q: What triggers my emotions in the first place? A: So, I never asked the question, "What are you feeling?" because most people don't know. I want to know what's going on, and I'll show you what I noticed. You know, and we'll talk about it. But the trigger is usually a social need. "I'm not being heard, I'm not being valued, I don't feel safe. Discover how to create the best virtual experience for you and your clients especially in the midst of COVID and the slow degradation of offline events Learn how to move your offline event online and discover the limitless features that lies behind it Find out how technology can help you make a deeper connection and understanding with your team or clients through a dynamic virtual experience Resources/Links: Check out Brian’s Website: brianfanzo.com/virtualevents Summary In the midst of this pandemic, are you looking for a way to host your events? Do you want to change and bring the offline to the online world? Do you want to know how you could still host your event while making it a more dynamic experience for your clients or team, virtually? Are you ready to create a dynamic virtual experience? Brian Fanzo is a digital futurist, virtual keynote speaker and podcaster helping brands and leaders find synergy between tech and humanity. In this episode, Brian shares his insights on how you could make your offline events online. He also shares how virtual events are the future and how it can be limitless and can provide a better and more dynamic experience to you, your clients, and team, virtually, especially in the midst of COVID. Check out these episode highlights: 02:02 - Brian’s ideal client: “Ideal client is anyone trying to leverage virtual to reach their, you know, new audience in this new way. So, it's either moving at an offline event online or reinventing, you know, a way to connect with your online audience.” 02:20 - Problem Brian helps solve: “The problem I solve is really helping reinvent what a virtual experience is. We take something from offline and put it online. You're competing with YouTube, Netflix, and all the other tools that are out there. I really try to help really shift their focus and have a new perspective on what's possible and creating a virtual experience.” 03:09 - Typical symptoms that clients do before reaching out to Brian: “So before COVID, this was an interesting one, because, before COVID, it was usually there was a disconnect between brands or their clients or customers that they interacted with offline, and then a real disconnect online on the relationship building, the scale, the marketing.” 05:15 - Common mistakes that people make before they find Brian’s solution: “One of the biggest mistakes is that we try to take what we do offline, and just repurpose it online.” 06:11 - Brian’s Valuable Free Action (VFA): “A big step is to think about how you can create a participatory element. And what I mean by that is, rather than talking at your audience, virtually, how can I allow them to participate in the conversation and even direct where you're going with your content?” 07:02 - Brian’s Valuable Free Resource (VFR): Check out Brian’s Website: brianfanzo.com/virtualevents 07:54 - Q: What is the future of virtual events? A: When we've talked webinars, we talked virtual, I think virtual is going to be around forever. I think we are having a newfound focus on virtual. I mean, webinars have been successful and very valuable for 10 plus years. Tweetable Takeaways from this Episode: “I don't believe everything needs to be interactive, but I do believe we can make everything feel participatory.” -Brian FanzoClick To Tweet Transcript (Note, this was transcribed using a transcription software and may not reflect the exact words used in the podcast) Tom Poland 00:09 Greetings everyone and another very warm welcome to yet another edition of Marketing The Invisible. This is a conversation with Archis Gore, CTO of Polyverse. Polyverse recently joined the newly announced Open Source Security Foundation (OpenSSF), a Linux Foundation project. Gore argues that Open Source software is built collaboratively. It doesn’t have a single ‘owner’ or a vendor. The community as a whole is the owner. What it means is that when it comes to security there is no ‘throat to choke’. No one owns SSL flaws, no one owns Heartbleed. Where does the buck stop? The Linux Foundation has been working on improving the security of open source projects, whether it hosts them or not. OpenSSF is an ambitious project in the direction of promoting the security of open-source software. “I really see a massive explosion just waiting to happen in security benefits from that specific point of view where all the Linux Foundation projects can institutionalize security learnings, patterns, behaviors and operate in ways which were only available to large corporations,” said Gore. Here are some of the topics that we covered: Q: What is OpenSSF? Q: What is the significance and importance of the foundation? Q: How will it have an impact across the Linux Foundation? Q: Security should be part of the development pipeline and not an afterthought? Q: What value is Polyverse bringing to the openSSF?
In a shrewd bit of counter-programming, we're releasing this episode on the day of what we're told is the most important election of our lifetimes...since the last one, and until the next one. This chunk of chapters seems occupied with a breakdown in the metabolic functioning of the lifeworld, and it asks us to shit or get off the pot. The primary science fictional technology KSR seems to be deploying in this novel is one of political economy. We touch on carbon quantitative easing, but we're more concerned with issues of circulation and metabolism. Now that capitalism seems to have reached its terminal phase, entering an apocalyptic moment, as Mike Davis has recently argued, how ought we be managing the residuum, the surplus, the effluvia of goods, and of people? Here we're interested in the surplus, excess, remainders, containment, entrapment, enclosure, capture, and incomparability. What happens when the taps run dry? (Society.) Would it help to hijack Davos? (Unclear, but it would be hilarious.) Do rich people love their kids? (Sort of? Maybe?) Is the family form a mechanism of individuation that keeps us from collective thinking? (Duh.) Can we imagine a nonsentimental human being outside of the calculations of economic rationality, and make it real? (We'd better.) Q: What do you call it when Benjamin's angel of history goes to the bathroom? A: Making progress. PugHearts of Houston is a non-profit rescue dedicated to giving unwanted and neglected Pugs a second chance. It is staffed by a network of volunteers in and around the greater Houston, TX area. Some of these volunteers donate their time; they pick up dogs, drive them to vet appointments, process adoption applications and help us out at events we attend throughout the year. Some volunteers open their hearts and homes to our Rescues and provide safe, loving foster homes for these dogs. None of our dogs stay in a shelter or kennel. All of our dogs are in private foster homes throughout the area. They learn to live (some of them for the first time) in a home with foster siblings and parents who teach them how to be part of a loving family. These fosters will try to get them ready for the next phase of their lives – when they get to join their new forever home! Interesting in Adopting? Here's what you should do... Read the FAQ below. Click the Pugs? and Learn tabs at the top of this website to read more about PugHearts and the breed. Taking the time to do some research about the breed will ensure that this is the right breed for you. Look over the Our Dogs section to see if we have a pug available that would be a good match for you and your family. Any dog listed in this section is available unless their bio states they are on medical hold. As soon as a dog is adopted out they are moved to our Success Stories page. Complete an adoption application using the Adopt tab on this website. Be sure to answer every single question as an incomplete application will not be processed.Remember, there is no obligation or commitment when you fill out an application. Even if you are approved, we will not place a pug with you until you (& we!) are certain you have found the perfect match. To make sure of this we will conduct a home visit as well a Meet & Greet with you and your potential adoptee. Our goal is to make sure that our Rescues find their true FOREVER home and never find themselves homeless again. FAQ - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Q: Can I come see the dogs? A: No, our dogs do not live at a shelter; they are in private foster homes. Q: How will I know which dog is right for me? A: Start by reading the bios and looking at the photos of the dog. If you find one you think you are interested in, complete an adoption application and list that dog on it. One of our volunteers will contact you (usually within a week or so) to talk to you about your application and that dog. If it sounds like a good fit, we will then arrange a “meet & greet” for you and that dog. Q: Is there any way I can meet a dog before putting in an application? A: If you do not have an approved adoption application on file, we will not schedule a “meet & greet” for you and a dog. However, we do try to bring as many of our rescues as possible to the Houston Pug Meetup. This is held the first Saturday of every month at Danny Jackson Dog Park. We usually have several volunteers there too who can answer general questions about PugHearts. NO adoptions take place during the meetups, they are for socialization only. Q: What if I want a dog but don’t see one on your website I’d like?A: Complete the adoption application. Unfortunately, we always have more dogs coming into our care. If you complete an application and we have it already approved, then we can contact you if a dog comes in that meets your request. Also, if you see one added to our website that you’d like to meet we can proceed directly to that step – no waiting for your application to be processed! Q: How much is it to adopt a dog? A: There is a $400 for adults and $500 for puppies adoption fee. This covers all medical expenses for the dog including rabies and other vaccinations, spay/neuter, heartworm testing and microchipping. Q: Do I have to pay anything to put in an application? A: No. We do not collect the adoption fee until your new furry family member is with you. Q: What if I think I want to adopt but I’m not sure yet? A: Completing the adoption application does not place you under any obligation. If you change your mind, just drop us an email or use the contact form and tell us you would like to withdraw your application. Or you can tell us you would like to put it “on hold” until you are sure. There is no commitment when you fill out the application. Q: How long does it take to process an adoption application? A: Usually 2 -3 weeks, though not always. Processing time varies depending upon how many applications we have recently received and how many volunteers we have helping us at the time. Q: I put in an adoption application but haven’t heard anything. How do I contact PugHearts? A: Use the Contact form on our website. We are an all volunteer staff which means we all work full time jobs and help out in our free time. One of our volunteers will get back with you shortly, though not always on the same day. Q: How do I become a volunteer/foster? A: Fill out the Contact form on our website. Someone will get in touch with you to discuss your area of interest. Q: How do I contact PugHearts for more information? A: For any general inquiries or comments, please use our Contact form to leave us a message. Q: How do I contact PugHearts in an emergency? A: If you know of a Pug that is in danger, please use our Contact form and select the “Urgent - Pug In Danger” option from our drop-down menu. Also, if you need to surrender a pug or have found a pug that you would like us to pick up, use the contact form and select the “I would like to surrender a pug” selection. If email is not an option you can contact our Emergency Hotline at 281-968-4958. Leave a message after the tone – we will be notified immediately that a message has been left and we will contact you shortly. Please note that this is an Emergency Hotline only – messages regarding adoption applications and general questions should not be left at this number – use the contact form instead. Q: I saw a Pug at my local animal control shelter. How do I let PugHearts know it is there? A: While PugHearts works very closely with all of the local shelters and will probably already know about this dog (most shelters have a mandatory waiting period before the dog can be released to a Rescue) you may know about one that we haven’t seen. Please use our Contact form to let us know where you saw a Pug needing a new home using the “I have information on a Pug needing help” option. This is also true of online classified ad sites (such as Craigslist). Q: I’d like to know when PugHearts will be having a fundraiser/event – how can I get on your email list? A: Come and join us on Facebook for up to the minute updates on all events.

Q: What might parents and teachers expect to see regarding children’s mental health as they begin school this fall? A: Worry or anxiety during this period would be expected and is a normal response. Children’s adjustment to the new school format, whether it’s remote or hybrid, would vary a lot based on age and a child’s individual personality or temperament, as well as the family’s overall experience of the pandemic. Both the disease aspects of the pandemic and also the economic stressors—if a parent or caregiver has lost a job, if there has been income or residential instability—are all part of the child’s experience and will play a role in the child’s adjustment. Some children could be experiencing the pandemic as a traumatic event—for instance if they’ve lost a grandparent or a loved one to COVID complications. In younger kids, psychological distress might manifest as new or worsening behavioral problems, difficulty separating from parents or caregivers, or somatic symptoms such as aches and pains or changes in sleep or appetite. Older kids can also experience somatic symptoms, as well as fear, nervousness, stress, irritability, and hypervigilance. In the academic context, symptoms could include difficulty concentrating, difficulty with motivation, or school refusal. A recent study in the U.S. that surveyed parents suggests that about 27% of parents and roughly 14% of children are experiencing worsening mental health problems during the pandemic. Rates of distress were highest among families with young children, who may have lost access to child care, and among single-parent families. We also know that some communities or subgroups have been disproportionately affected by the pandemic, including underresourced or minority communities, and children in these communities may be at higher risk for mental health concerns. Also, children with preexisting mental health concerns, children who have learning disabilities or any other challenges that have required individualized learning plans, and children with medical vulnerabilities may experience greater adjustment issues or mental health concerns at this time. Each operating system features some exact format to work with. Among the most popular ones are: ELF (Executable and Linkable Format), used by most of Linux distros PE (Portable Executable), used by Windows Mach-O (Mach object), used by Apple products We also need to make our library visible to our programs. An easiest way to do so is to copy it to /usr/lib/ - default system-wide directory for libraries. Maybe put it in system / system32 on Windows? ctypes: the simplest way With the shared object compiled, we are ready to call it. Consider ctypes to be the easiest way to execute some C code, because: it’s included in the standard library, writing a wrapper uses plain Python. lib = ctypes.CDLL(f'/usr/lib/libdullmath.so') lib.get_pi For C: You need to be clear about the calling convention (extern “C” for example) Now we can load libraries at runtime, but we are still missing the way to generate correct caller ABI to use external C libraries. Do deal with it, libffi was created. Libffi is a portable C library, designed for implementing FFI tools, hence the name. Given structs and functions definitions, it calculates an ABI of function calls at runtime. A mature approach to improve in this area is to allow libraries to introduce themselves. We can oblige every library to define a function named entry_point, which will return metadata about functions it contains. Final destination: C/C++ extensions and Python/C API CPython provides a similar API for implementing C-based extensions: “Extending and Embedding the Python Interpreter”. // NOTE: entry point function has dynamic name PyInit_[HTML_REMOVED] PyMODINIT_FUNC PyInit_mymath(void) { return PyModule_Create(&mymathmodule); } The main difference is that we have to wrap initial C functions with Python-specific ones. CPython interpreter uses its own PyObject type internally rather than raw int, char*, and so on, and we need the wrappers to perform the conversion. Cython, Boost.Python, pybind11 and all all all The main challenge of writing pure C extensions is a massive amount of boilerplate that needs to be written. Mainly this boilerplate is related to wrapping and unwrapping PyObject. It becomes especially hard if a module introduces its own classes (object types). To solve this issue, a plethora of different tools was created. All of them introduce a certain way to generate wrapping boilerplate automatically. They also provide easy access to C++ code and advanced tools for the compilation of extensions. Examples aiohttp - asyncio web framework that uses Cython for HTTP parsing, uvloop - event loop that is wrapping libuv, fully written in Cython, httptools - bindings to nodejs HTTP parser, also fully written in Cython (a lot of other big projects like sanic or uvicorn use httptools). Cecil #2: ugit: DIY Git in Python Michael #3: Things I Learned to Become a Senior Software Engineer by Niel Kakkar Growing using different ladders of abstraction Entering my second year, I had all the basics in place. I did figure out something insightful. I’m working inside the software development lifecycle, but this lifecycle is part of a bigger lifecycle: the product and infrastructure development lifecycle. Learning what people around me are doing Since we’re not in a closed system, it makes sense to better understand the job of the product managers, the sales people, and the analysts. Product managers are the best source for this. They know how the business makes money, who are the clients, and what do clients need. Learning good habits of mind Thinking well: Diving into cog sci, one output was a framework for critical thinking. It’s compounding, and compounding is powerful. Strategies for making day-to-day more effective: The other side of the coin is habits that allow you to think well. It starts with noticing little irritations during the day, inefficiencies in meetings, and then figuring out strategies to avoid them. Some good habits I’ve noticed: Never leave a meeting without making the decision / having a next action Decide who is going to get it done. Things without an owner rarely get done. Document design decisions made during a project Acquiring new tools for thought & mental models New tools for thought are related to thinking well, but more specific to software engineering. For example, I was recently struggling with a domain with lots of complex business logic. Edge cases were the norm, and we wanted to design a system that handles this cleanly. That’s when I read about Domain Driven Design Protect your slack When I say slack, I don’t mean the company, but the adjective. One thing that gives me high output and productivity gains is to “slow down”. Want to get more done? Slow down. When there is slack, you get a chance to experiment, learn, and think things through. This means you get enough time to get things done. When there is no slack, deadlines are tight, and all your focus goes into getting shit done. Ask Questions Q: What is a package? A: It’s code wrapped together that can be installed on a system. Q: Why do I need packages? A: They give a consistent way of getting all the files you need in the right place. Without them, things are easy to mess up. You need to ensure every file is where it’s supposed to be, the system paths are set up, and dependent packages are available. Q: How do packages differ from applications I can install on my system? A: It’s a very similar idea! Windows installer is like a package manager that helps install applications. Similarly, DPKG and rpm packages are like .exes that you can install on Linux systems, with the help of apt and yum package managers, which are like the windows installers. Force multipliers One sprint I didn’t get much done myself. I wrote very limited code. Instead, I co-ordinated which changes should go out when (it was a complicated sprint), tested they worked well, did lots of code reviews, made alternate design suggestions, and pair-programmed wherever I could to get things un-stuck. We got everything done, and in this case, zooming out helped make decisions for PRs easier. It was one of our highest velocity sprints. Embrace fear: I’ve learned to embrace this feeling. It excites me. It’s information about what I’m going to learn. I’ve taken it so far that I’ve started tracking it in my human log - “Did I feel fear this week?” If the answer is no too many weeks in a row, I’ve gotten too comfortable. Super powers Getting into the source code when documentation isn’t enough Quest: Reading open source code. Quickly build a mental model for the code you’re looking at Quest: Reading open source code. Embracing fear Quest: Build a side project. Confidence to express ignorance Quest: Overcome the first gotcha with growing. Cecil #4: Build tech skills for space exploration Michael #5: Profiling Django Views by Farhan Azmi We know we need to profile our code Many Python profiling tools exist, but this article will limit only to the most used tools: cProfile and django-silk . The two tools mainly profile in regards to function calls and execution time. To incorporate cProfile to Django views, we can write our own middleware that captures the profiling on every request sent to our Django views. Thankfully, there exists a simpler solution: django-cprofile-middleware. It is a simple profiling middleware created by a Github user omarish. To profile this view with the installed middleware, we can just append prof parameter to the end of the URL, i.e. http://localhost:8000/api/auth/users/availability/?username=[HTML_REMOVED]&email=[HTML_REMOVED]&prof We can visualize the profile result further with Python profiler visualizing library, such as SnakeViz. Just add &download to the request. the profile result could not show which database query that brings performance hit. This is needed especially when our application is centered around database (SQL) queries: That’s where django-silk comes in. Add as middleware: Silk will automatically intercept requests we make to our views and the UI can be accessed from the path /silk/ . Dive into a request to see all the headers/form/etc + DB query and perf. How would you respond to the following objections? “I think we should just pray about abortion.” “Abortion is a social issue; I’m about the gospel.” “Speaking out will only inflict greater pain on those who have had abortions.” “Abortion is a controversial & divisive issue. I’m called to protect the unity of my church.” To get answers to these questions, Mark interviews Mike Spencer, who was a pastor for 23 years. Mike shares his experience leading a church and training pro-life advocates. Q: Why did you leave the pastorate to work in the pro-life movement? Q: We know what pulpit silence costs the unborn. This is the greatest travesty. But what does pastoral silence with respect to abortion cost the church? Q: What is the biblical role of the pastor in an abortion culture? What should this look like? Ever wonder how to use reels and stories for your brand? Today we'll cover Instagram reels, stories, live video, & what to share in each. How to Explode Engagement on Instagram Episode #11 https://ruthiegray.mom/explode-engagement-on-instagram/ How to maintain consistent story posting Q: Having trouble with consistency, losing momentum when I doubt, pushing through and starting again. A. Here's the thing about how to use reels and stories - you don't have to be rigid or have a certain kind of strategy at the beginning, especially. Start sharing your life. Think of a few things that you can share in stories: morning coffee ground coffee beans every morning morning walk Flowers and foliage porch swing Your life Nothing uncomfortable or too private See Episode #11 on Exploding Engagement in stories Use Engagement Stickers, quizzes, questions, etc. 2-3 stories per day; 1-3 frames (beginning, middle, and end) So just get in the habit of sharing your life, not tons and not anything that you wouldn't be comfortable with sharing, but share your life and then start using what I advised in podcast 11 about exploding engagement in stories is to use stickers three times a week, like poll stickers, like polls or questions or quizzes, ask questions, make it about them. Start sharing even if it's only one clip a day, just do one clip a day. Wow. And people start to really relate to you. My best advice is to do two to three stories a day. How long should a story be? Really a story is one to three frames. Stories have a beginning, a middle and an end, and don't forget that you can share your feed posts to stories as well. And then expand on it. So if your feed post is a quote, then talk more about the quote, like show your face for a minute or have your camera turned around on your subject. Flowers or something while you talk or whatever, maybe it's a book. So it really doesn't have to be hard. We just need to start being consistent. And Pat from breakthrough homeschooling. She said, consistency is tough. There's a life thing that gets in the way. So, life does get in the way, but y'all. Think about it, you know, that I just lost my dad in July for six weeks. I was in and out of hospitals, but sharing stories; pictures of my needle point, pictures of the hospital. And actually talking sometimes about what was going on and people were invested in that story because I was sharing my life. So many people thanked me for being transparent. They said, "thank you for sharing with your Insta fam", . And so those are just practical, easy ways. If life gets in the way, share the life, that's in the way. That's the way to do it. Just start making it a priority. And, everybody has to start at ground zero. Everybody has to start somewhere. So you just start, you know, you just start and then you be consistent. Just take off in stories and just start sharing your life sharing everyday stuff. How to use reels and stories (and why) Q: What’s the point of 15 second reels? More discoverability More relatability Use to entertain, educate, or encourage Use as an announcement Reels are only 15 seconds. 3 components in stories: 1) Story, which is taped video or it can just be as stale, stagnant picture If you video in that story, it can only be 15 seconds. 2) Live video lives in stories if you go on live, make it 15 to 30 minutes Turn into an IGTV and make a preview in feed, which I highly recommend. 3) Reels.

THANKS FOR SUPPORTING AND DON'T FORGET TO HELP ME HELP YOU BY SUBSCRIBING . PARTIAL TRANSCRIPT PROVIDED BELOW. FROM THE BOOK OF LEGAL DICATION Q: [BY THE CHAIRMAIN] Your residence? A: 625 Ferry St, Boston Q: What is your age? A: Forty-one Q: You were the builder of this bridge? A: A portion of it Q: Please describe as fully as you can, your whole connection to it, in your own words. A: It is so long ago that I don't know whether I can remember all that you would like to hear, but the contract required me to build a truss to be placed upon the east side of the bridge, and I was to furnish the floor system. That was done in the spring or early summer of 1876. Q: Go on and describe more in detail what you did. Were you in business for yourself or were you representing a company? A: I was in business for myself. Q: Go on and tell us about the bridge; where the work was done, how the work was done, the character of the bridge, the nature of its construction. etc. Perhaps you had better begin, and state , in the first place, your experience as a builder. A: My first experience in building iron bridges was with the Detroit Bridge & Iron Works, Detroit Michigan. Q: [BY MR. O'BRIEN] What year? A: I think it was 1863; and my experience has been from then until--I am not sure this bridge wasn't the last I built. Since then I have acted occasionally as a consulting engineer. Q: [BY THE CHAIRMAIN] Do you have a scientific education? A: Yes, sir, at the Lawrence Scientific School, at Cambridge. Q: Full course? A: No, sir. Partial. Q: What was your course then? A: I was there one year only. Q: What year was that? A: I'm not sure but I think it was 1862-63. From there I went to St. Louis. Q: How long were you with St. Louis Bridge & Iron Company? A: Well, I don't recollect; but several years. Q: What were you doing there? A: I designed their bridges, proportioned them, and I made some portions of the drawings. Q: Did you do that all the time you were there? A: Yes, sir. Q: Do you remember any bridges you designed at that time? A: Well, there was one drawbridge across the Mississippi River, where the C.B. & Q railroad crosses, --Clinton on one side and Fulton on the other. Q: How long did that stand? A: It is standing now, I suppose. That was at that time the longest drawbridge, I think, in the world. Some have been built longer since. There were a great many on the Illinois Central and the C.B. & Q and other words through the Western states. Q: Did you build any bridges in Massachusetts when you were with the St. Louis Bridge & Iron Works? A: No, sir. Q: Then you left the St. Louis Bridge & Iron Works at what time? A: I don't recollect the date. Q: You were there about three years, you say? A: I said several; but I don't recollect how many years it was; I could not tell even approximately. Q: What did you do after you left there? They're skipping around, they're jumping from this business model to that business model. They're hoping something will eventually work.” 04:06 - Typical symptoms that clients do before reaching out to Melinda: “The symptom is sporadic revenue, it's like that roller coaster revenue. They're going to have sporadic clients or they're going to hit a plateau. They're going to reach working with a certain amount of clients making a certain amount of money.” 05:09 - Common mistakes that people make before they find Melinda’s solution: “There are four distinct phases that every business goes through. I don't care how big you grow to if you want 50,000, or six figures or seven figures. And what will a big mistake is a newer coach will look to a mentor or somebody that they admire. And, they try to duplicate what that person is doing.” 06:41 - Melinda’s Valuable Free Action (VFA): “Well, the easiest thing you've got to assess where you are, like on any adventure, any journey that you're going on. So many people they've got the end result figured out, they know where they want to go, "I want to be I want to make six figures. I want to go to seven figures. I want to make this. I want this", but they forget to assess where they are and so that is- do not overestimate that is to take an assessment with, what systems do you have in place?” 07:26 - Melinda’s Valuable Free Resource (VFR): Check out Melinda’s Business Readiness Quiz: http://www.coachesconsole.com/business-readiness-quiz/ 08:24 - Q: What's another mistake that new coaches often make? A: Be intentional. A lot of times, you come from the place of being the coach, being the consultant. Learn how to get clients without actually selling Find out how to turn your sales conversations into sales conversions Discover how to make your sales process as easy as turning on your faucet bringing in a steady flow of clients Resources/Links: Download your Guide to Flawless Free Sessions: http://www.flawlessfreesessions.com/ Summary For some who are allergic to selling, the process seems to be a daunting task that gets complicated than it ever needs to be. One works harder than you should and still ending up not closing the deal. How do you let go of the pressure of selling and still fill your client pipeline? Over the last 15 years, Dallas Travers started three six-figure businesses from scratch. Along the way, she's made a ton of mistakes, had some major successes, and learned precisely how to build a coaching business that makes a real difference in the world and supports the lifestyle she desires. In this episode, learn how to streamline your sales process to make things simpler for you to convert quality leads to actual clients. Check out these episode highlights: 01:19 - Dallas' ideal client: "My ideal client is any coach who feels like they work all the time they've hit a glass ceiling, and they're allergic to selling." 01:42 - The problem Dallas helps solves: "A lot of coaches feel like selling goes against who they are as a person. So, they work really, really hard to get a potential client into a discovery session. And then they totally dropped the ball. So, they can never actually convert quality leads because they don't have a sales process that feels authentic to them." 02:21 - The symptoms evident in the client's life before they work with Dallas: "A lot of them don't follow through on their own marketing plans because they've got competing intentions. They want more clients but they don't want to sell and they believe that selling is a part of the client conversion process. So, they often don't follow through. They work at the last minute and no matter how prepared they are for a sales conversation; they will do something inside of that conversation to sabotage themselves." 03:53 - Common mistakes people commit before finding Dallas's solution: "When it comes especially to sales conversations and discovery calls, they actually don't have a process. They hate discovery calls so much that they don't actually practice until they're in an actual sales conversation." " 05:08 - Dallas' Valuable Free Action (VFA): "Number one, get in some discovery sessions, be a client in discovery sessions. And take note, whether that's practicing or not, take note of the person's process and take note of when you feel you've like lost the connection as the client. From there, write down your own process and practice it 22 times." 06:28 - Dallas' Valuable Free Resource (VFR): Check out Dallas' website: http://www.flawlessfreesessions.com/ 07:04 - Q: What's your best piece of advice for coaches who ask you, 'What more should I be doing'? A: You should be doing less if you do not have a process in place to bring in clients that's as easy to turn on as a water faucet. You're over complicating things. In order to break the barrier, all you need is a simple process to bring in private clients and to really enroll them without selling. If you're thinking beyond that you're making the road harder and longer than needs to be. Check out these episode highlights: 01:40 - Hoyin’s ideal client: “My ideal client is anyone who runs webinars, online events.” 02:26 - Problem Hoyin helps solve: “The problem is nowadays, when you do webinars, it's like a one-dimensional experience. You can't talk to anyone else, it's just you sitting there by yourself listening passively." 03:15 - Typical symptoms that clients do before reaching out to Hoyin: “They're not always engaged. That's one thing. The second thing is in webinars, like people may come in, they may attend and they may engage but maybe there's not enough follow on activity.” 04:08 - Common mistakes that people make before they find Hoyin’s solution: “They think that the current platform that they're on is sufficient enough. So, they keep on putting effort in it. They keep on putting more posts just say in a Facebook group, or in a money network. Or maybe they just keep on doing webinars and try to get more like, tell more people about it during the webinars. But the problem itself may not be the marketing of it, or the content, it's just the format.” 05:02 – Hoyin's Valuable Free Action (VFA): "They need to experience what an interactive event is.." 06:09 - Hoyin's Valuable Free Resource (VFR): Join and experience an Online Interactive event at Next Gen Online Events: https://www.ungoldfish.com/interactive-online-event-academy 06:40 - Q: What is an interactive event? A: Imagine that you have a top-down map and you can see small circles. And each circle has each person's profile face, and so it's kind of like a game. It gives you the freedom to join any conversation you want, and the freedom to go wherever you want. And that is a huge difference to allowing people to feel like they're in control, and talk to everyone. " Tweetable Takeaways from this Episode: “ Our lives are becoming more digital. We're looking for something that's more real. There needs to be the next revolution. Know more about SEO and how it can help boost your website’s visibility and interaction Discover the advantages of having some basic knowledge of SEO in the growth of your business’ website Learn how having the right SEO can help increase your visibility online Resources/Links: Free SEO Report. Get Your Free SEO Report: https://hikeseo.co/free-seo-audit/ Summary Does it trouble you to get your hands on the perfect SEO for your website because you either don’t have the budget to hire an SEO agency or you just don’t have any knowledge about it? Andrew Allen has been doing SEO, search engine optimization, for more than eight years. He has helped a huge variety of clients from one-man bands like to international retailers. He now runs a very interesting service called Hike SEO. It's a platform that helps small to medium-sized business owners conquer Google. In this episode, Andrew shares his insights on how important it is to have the right and proper SEO for your business’ website in order to increase its visibility and interaction. Check out these episode highlights: 01:50 - Andrew’s ideal client: “So, our ideal client is someone who owns a website, or small business that runs a website and understands that the visibility online is important. So, making sure that their business is visible, Google where their customers are searching for products and services. So, they understand the power and the volume that Google has.” 03:32 - Problem Andrew helps solve: “Yeah, yeah, exactly that. So, it's making sure that your business is found on Google and whether that's, if you're a local business, you might only be found at, you know, the top of the Google Map results. Now that requires some methodology to get to that. Or perhaps e-commerce site, you want to get to the top, like, above all every e-commerce store. Or you're a service-based business and you want to get to the top of the regular organic listings. Yup, that's the problem that people have.” 04:50 - Typical symptoms that clients do before reaching out to Andrew: “So, one common route people take to us is that they potentially use an agency before, they might have hired a freelancer, a consultant, or use an SEO agency. They might not have seen the results they wanted them. They've spent a lot of money, you pay for someone else's expertise and for them to learn SEO previously, right? And they might not have been aware of what the SEO agency was actually doing. There's a lack of transparency in our industry. Many business owners say, "I was paying for SEO but I didn't know what they would do," you know, "I wasn't aware of what was going on." And the thing about Hike is it just takes away all of that lack of clarity, it makes it completely transparent. You know exactly what's happening, exactly what you need to do to improve yourself. And it's not rocket science. SEO isn't hard, it's very nature.” 06:33 – Andrew's Valuable Free Action (VFA): Go and get Google Search Console setup, that's a great starting point. " 07:11 - Andrew's Valuable Free Resource (VFR): Free SEO Report. Get Your Free SEO Report: https://hikeseo.co/free-seo-audit/ 08:08 - Q: What's the future of SEO in five years? A: I think people need to start thinking about voice search. Now that makes sense, I use my Google Home a lot of time, people use Alexa all the time. People ask their search engines a lot of questions. People went to buy shoes before they go to Google their searches. Now they'll ask their Alexa, or their Google Home they'll go, "Okay, you know, where can I buy my shoes, or what's the best style?" Learn how to explode your cash flow and pay yourself what you deserve without borrowing more or working more Learn how to get your cash flow back on track Discover how to develop a system for always staying cash flow positive Resources/Links: Checkout Jeff's Freebie: Email Jeff at jkprager@gmail.com, and he'll get you your cash flow calculator. Summary Would you like more cash in your bank tomorrow than you have today? Jeff Prager is the founder of Cash Flow Engineering, LLC. He is a retired CPA, author, speaker and former CEO/CFO, founder, and owner of several successful multimillion-dollar companies. He was one of the founders of Ashworth Golf Clothing, the CFO/partner of a large land development company and the owner of Strauss Homes, which was once rated as the second largest privately-owned home builder in Colorado and in the top 100 privately-owned companies of Colorado (2003). In this episode, Jeff shares how to develop a system for always staying cash flow positive. Check out these episode highlights: 01:54 – Jeff's ideal client: "I work best with companies and businesses or organizations that want to generate more cash flow, booster cash reserves, fund their growth and build the cash cow, and possibly even make their company attractive to a buyer." 02:15 – Problem Jeff helps solve: "The problems we solve are generating a cash plan so you can finally get control over your cash and damn near guarantee that you'll have more cash tomorrow than you do today." 03:24 – Typical symptoms that clients do before reaching out to Jeff: "When it comes to cash flow, business owners almost exclusively focus on symptoms and not solutions. For instance, they're always chasing cash. And at the end of the month, there's less cash in the bank than they had the last month, or they have one good month and it's followed by three bad months because they don't have any momentum." 04:59 – Common mistakes that people make before they find Jeff's solution: "They mistake revenue and/or profit for cash flow. Think about it, when you sell a deal, the money isn't yours until you collected it." 06:57 – Jeff's Valuable Free Action(VFA): "There are seven key numbers that can massively change the direction of your company. They are your number of leads, your conversion rate, your customer retention rate, the number of transactions per customer, the average price per transaction. The first five numbers generate top-line growth. But then you got to control cost, your variable cost, as a percentage of gross revenue, and your fixed costs which are nothing more than salaries, marketing costs and overhead. So, your first step is to triangulate on your seven key numbers over the next 90 days, because once you focus on these numbers, the magic happens. Unequivocally, just starting this process can be the best thing you ever did for yourself. And don't worry if it's not perfect, it will never be perfect." 05:17 – Jeff's Valuable Free Resource (VFR): Checkout Jeff's's Freebie: Email Jeff at jkprager@gmail.com, and he'll get you your cash flow calculator. 08:30 – Q: What's the simplest way to manage your business? Q: How about advice or suggestions on coaching or leading up? Don’t think this topic has been discussed on the podcast. Examples always help! I enjoy what you’re covering. Keep it up! Q: Where have you seen the biggest change/impact from your leadership development focus at Be Hope? Q: I have an employee that has been identified as having leader potential… he seems to want to be at leader status but isn’t necessarily putting in the work to get there… I have offered him a variety of different opportunities but I don’t feel the initiative is there. You mentioned in one of the podcasts that if people keep denying the opportunities that you have presented to allow them to advance then you stop asking. The questions: 1. Do you tell people that if they continue to deny opportunities then you’re going to stop asking them to do things? Would this be a one on one taking point? 2. Am I just offering the wrong opportunities? 3. Is there some consideration I should make in changing the way I facilitate the opportunities? Q: Is there a leadership checklist? What I mean by that is if you feel like your team is doing well and you’re trusting their choices but you want to make sure that everyone else feels the same what do you do? I often do one on one meetings with each staff member usually at least quarterly and I always ask for feedback on my leadership and what I can do better and very rarely does anyone give me an answer…. and I don’t think that’s because I’m doing a fantastic job all the time. Our company is going to roll out some sort of 360 manager survey that all staff will receive so that will be helpful but without that what do you do? Q: You seem to have the ability to take in a lot of ideas and suggestions and quickly process them and get to the root concern, or the core ideas that needs to be addressed. How did you learn to do that? Q: What are you listening to and reading that excites you? Q: What should the church be doing differently to draw men out of isolation and into becoming the godly leaders they are designed to be at home, work, and the community?

Discover how to increase the impact of your business to your customers through your own three-word rebellion Learn how having a five-second rule can increase your business’ potential Discover the importance of having your own one-of-a-kind message to help you improve the influence of your business and possibly start a movement Resources/Links: Check out Michelle’s Book:3 Word Rebellion: Create a One-of-a-Kind Message that Grows Your Business Into a Movement:https://www.amazon.com/Word-Rebellion-One-Kind-Business/dp/0578421119 Summary Does it feel like your business isn’t making an impact on your customers no matter how much money you’ve spent on marketing it? Michelle Mazur has worked with multiple, game-changing business owners who have difficulty in having a clear and concise message for their business. She helps business owners craft a powerful and captivating message by combining successful social movements with qualitative research. In this episode, Michelle talks about the importance of having your own unique three-word rebellion or the classic five-second rule in your business. She explains how having your own solid message can help your business and start a movement. Check out these episode highlights: 1:55 -- Michelle’s ideal client: “ My ideal client is, they're innovative business owners who have typically created their own framework, their own methodology, or they have multiple tools in their toolbox that get people amazing results. They have the ability to revolutionize their industry in some way and really help and change people. But they can't really talk about what they do.” 2:31 -- Problem Michelle helps solve: “So, they can't talk about what they do, which causes a lot of confusion and overwhelm in the eyes of the people they could help and impact. The people that are receiving the message are like, "I don't get it, I don't understand what you're about, what you do." "Why you're different from anyone else." Like, "You make no sense to me, I'm just not dropping it." 3:19 -- Typical symptoms that clients do before reaching out to Michelle: “ One big symptom is they usually spent a crap ton on marketing that hasn't worked in their business. So, they've hired a marketing team, or they've taken all these courses that haven't paid off, or they hired a PR person or speaking agent or they thought, "Oh, I'm going to write this book and it's going to get the word out. I'm going to get all these speaking gigs." And then nothing happens because the message isn't there. It's not intriguing the people it should be intriguing, and people just aren't getting it. They're not interested. So that's one clear sign. 5:02 -- Common mistakes that people make before they find Michelle’s solution: “Jumping to marketing before working on their message is a common mistake, I feel like 99% of business owners make. We work really hard on creating a great offer. And then we're just like, "Okay, I'm going to market this," and we don't have any solid messaging. Not positioning ourselves in the marketplace.” 6:24 -- Michelle’s Valuable Free Action (VFA): “Get out of your head and get your ideas out of your head and onto paper. A three-word rebellion, a one of a kind message is never found by thinking about it. It's found by getting your idea out of your head and onto paper where you can actually see what you're dealing with. See the words, see the ideas." 7:51 -- Michelle’s Valuable Free Resource (VFR): Check out Michelle’s Website: threewordrebellion.com 8:21 -- Q: What happens after you find your three words? A: So, after you find your three words, you have to find the messages that will sell those three words into the masses. It's not like Simon Sinek stood on the streets of Seattle and said, "Start with why, start with why," and started his movement and his business that way.
Q: What is going onnnn with our planet? A: What ISN’T going on?!Sometimes it’s easy to forget just how intertwined our lives are with not just our communities and on our planet but with ALL of the other circling planets. Maybe astrology is a little ‘woo-woo’ for you and you think horoscopes are B.S. and that's fine! BUT, even if you think either of those things or just haven’t thought about astrology and the cycling of our planets at all, I promise you don’t want to miss this episode of The Positively Real Podcast. I wanted to bring on my friend Katie Zeman who is [newly] vocal about her astrology learnings to talk about how we’re being affected on a personal and a collective (national and international) level by the moving and shifting of our surroundings (i.e. our Solar System). Katie Zeman has been studying astrology for over a decade and is currently building her astrology business. She considers herself a lifelong student as there is so much to learn and I am so happy she is here to share that knowledge with us! In this episode we talk: Astrological Mapping and its effect on usReviewing and revisiting past themes of our global climateThe retrograding of planets such as Pluto and JupiterUsing astrology to aide in transformation and as a tool for growthMoon cyclingThe upcoming lunar eclipse (4th of July!) and why you should be aware of itShadow workAnd sooo much more!!Katie has a degree in western and eastern psychology and weaves this knowledge into her interpretations and her readings have been described as an in-depth therapy session (where do we sign up?!).RESOURCES: https://www.instagram.com/zemamas/ACTION STEP: Given the themes that were discussed in this episode I thought it would be really poignant to write a personal letter to our country (whatever country you may be from! This action step is inclusive of all countries and nations!). It’s not something that needs to be sent to the White House or anything like that - think of it as like a journal entry or a time capsule letter. It’s all about setting an intention of what you want to see for the collective that is your nation and reflect on our relationships with said country. See some prompts below to help you out! What kind of new systems and structures do you want to see in place? What do you want to see transform in this country? What needs to change? What is our personal relationship to the structure of our country? Do we benefit? Do we not benefit? Do we feel at home in this country?

He has started, grown, and successfully exited multiple businesses in various industries. Allan grew his business from startup to four years later being named by Business Review Weekly (BRW)’s as one of Australia's fastest-growing companies. In this episode, Allan shares the importance of having a marketing plan that will show you how to build a marketing infrastructure, that you're actually going to use, give you clarity and structure, and is going to give you a simple framework to follow. Check out these episode highlights: 01:46 – Allan's ideal client: "My ideal client is a small to medium business owner. Typically, someone doing either going from startup right up to $20 million in revenue. And its people who are spending their own money on advertising and marketing and who are looking to really level up and to reap the benefits of doing that. So, it's someone who believes that marketing can help them get to that next level, and then want some guidance with that." 02:20 – Problem Allan helps solve: "The biggest problem I solve is helping people go from confusion to clarity as it relates to marketing. A lot of people do kind of random acts of marketing, and they don't have clarity, that I have structure, that I have simplicity when it comes to marketing. So really the problem that we solve, if I could put it in one word, which is clarity, we help you get clarity as it relates to marketing. And then more than that is we help you develop your own marketing capability, your own marketing muscle." 03:00 – Typical symptoms that clients do before reaching out to Allan: "So typical symptoms are people just doing random acts of marketing, following the bright shiny object." 04:04 – Common mistakes that people make before they find Allan's solution: "Two of the most common mistakes I find, number one, they'll hire an expensive consultant to help them put together a big comprehensive business or marketing plan. And that's firstly expensive, it's time-consuming. And the worst part of it is, it's not practical. In my first business, I made that same mistake. And, you know, I hired a consultant, he helped me put together a 75-page business plan. And then I shove that in the top drawer of my desk and never saw it again until I was moving out of the office. I sort of tossed it off, tossed it in the trash and was angry at myself for spending all that money." 05:15 – Allan's Valuable Free Action(VFA): "Put together a practical marketing plan that you're actually going to use, something that's actually going to give you clarity, it's going to give you structure, it's going to give you a simple framework to follow. 06:04 – Allan's Valuable Free Resource (VFR): Checkout Allan's 1-Page Marketing Plan Canvas Is the Easiest and Fastest Way to Create a Marketing Plan That Will Propel Your Business Growth:https://successwise.com/ 06:20 – Q: What is the mindset or transformation that people need to make to be successful in marketing? Why wouldn't God have the same for Himself?A: See John 17:5, 24 | Ephesians 5:25-32 | Revelation 19:9[05:54] - Q: What is a Christ-like response to people you don't know stopping you on the street and asking for money? What's the best way to show the love of Christ without enabling/hurting more than helping the situation?A: The safest bet is to offer them food. But always make it an opportunity to share the gospel with them.[12:20] - Q: The Bible states "absent from the body present with the Lord" but also talks about the dead in Christ will rise at Christ's return and forever be with the Lord. Explain please.A: See 1 Thessalonians 4:15-17 | 1 Corinthians 15:35-55[14:26] - LIVE TXT Q: We are to believe that the Bible is the truth because it is Gods word, and I want to believe this, but the Bible has been translated and copied so many times by so many people. What if the truth has been lost in the process?A: The test to verify an ancient document, the Biblographical Test. 2nd ancient document, the Homer’s Ilead 600ish copies…the New Testament has 24,000+ ancient copies.[23:29] - Q: Christ tells us to do communion but He also washed feet and told us to do that too. Why do some churches wash feet and not others. (BTW the fact that we don't is not a problem with me.)A: See John 13:15 - For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you.[27:47] - LIVE AUDIENCE Q: Could you talk about eschatology? What the church’s position is on end times. His scripture descriptive of what’s going to happen, what’s already been fulfilled, just generally like that.A: See Revelation, Matthew 24, Mark 13, Daniel 9 | Last year we covered the entire book of Revelation.[30:50] - Q: Can you please explain to me the meaning of Psalm 108:7-9? thank you.A: See Psalm 57:7-11 | Psalm 60:5-12[33:39] - Q: To my understanding, the devil was cast from Heaven due to the sin of Pride, is that correct? And if so, I don't understand that as I didn't think sin was possible in Heaven? Thanks.A: See Revelation 12:4 | Matthew 25:41 [35:00] - LIVE TXT Q: How does Harvest reconcile the thought that some parts of scripture are cultural (like head coverings) but others like the role of women in the church are not?A: See Timothy 2:11-15 | It’s the context of and surrounding the passage as to whether it’s cultural or theological, take out your biases and read the text straightforwardly.[39:21] - Q: Melchizedek. Please Explain.A: See Hebrews 7 | Psalm 110:4 | Genesis 14Melchizedek was a “type”, a picture of the Messiah, in at least 5 ways:1 – His name: my king is Righteousness 2 – His title: King of Salem (Peace) 3 – He was BOTH king AND priest 4 – He was not a Levitical priest (Jesus was from Judah) 5 – No beginning or end. Mel shows up suddenly and vanishes suddenly from the Scriptures, no genealogy or parents mentioned, “resembling Jesus” as a “priest forever”. (Heb7:3)[42:58] - Q: What about white privilege and racism? And what about diversity in our church? How are we supposed to respond as a body and as individuals?A: Join us next week for a Bonus QnA day! This is a a live panel ran by SOSV to introduce and discuss solutions funded by some of the most active investors in deep tech startups fighting Covid-19. Each of the three funds (Fifty Years, Khosla Ventures, SOSV) published an impressive list of their relevant portfolio startups. IndieBio even made a call to fund Covid-fighting startups as part of its newly launched NYC program. Here are the full video and slides. If you’d like to know about future events, follow us on Twitter at @SOSV or sign up to our newsletter. This podcast is hosted by Benjamin Joffe, Partner at SOSV, a global early stage fund focused on deep tech with over $700m under management. SOSV runs multiple accelerator programs, including HAX (intelligent hardware) and IndieBio (life sciences). Episode Overview This recording has 3 parts: Part 1: Some non-biotech solutions, from 3D printing to robotics, Part 2, VCs present solutions from their portfolio (mostly biotech), Part 3: Q&A. The speakers are: Seth Bannon, Founding Partner at Fifty Years, Alex Morgan, MD PhD, Partner at Khosla Ventures, Jun Axup, PhD, Partner at IndieBio (SOSV). Introduction & Moderation: Benjamin Joffe, Partner at SOSV Julie Wolf, PhD, Communications Director at IndieBio NYC (SOSV) Part 1 Introduction by Benjamin Joffe, Partner at SOSV a. What has changed since SARS? SARS was in 2003. In the span of 17 years, several important developments happened: Low-cost genetic tests Sensors & robots Cloud solutions The challenge of current solutions remain costs, timing and scalability. b. Prevention A hundred years ago, prevention was mostly... masks. Today, we have a much better understanding of the modes of infection of viruses, and many new tools to prevent it. c. 3D Printing While we’re still far from the ‘3D printing revolution’ that was announced 10 years ago, some high-resolution 3D printing technology is able to supply useful parts quickly, at low cost, and on-site. Clips and buckles for masks or door handles but also test swabs. d. Protecting our face We need to protect our face from others, but also from ourselves: Many masks don’t effectively protect against infection as the virus is too small (about 120nm). Verdex (a SOSV portfolio company) has developed a nanofiber material that filters out particles above 100nm — effectively blocking the virus — and is also more breathable. HabitAware, a HAX portfolio company, had created a machine-learning-powered bracelet to prevent body-focused repetitive behaviors (e.g. nail biting) by recognizing and alerting of specific gestures. The pandemic provided a new direct application of their technology. e. Disinfecting everything The ‘new normal’ is making frequent and thorough disinfection of our living and working environment necessary, to protect us and helps us get back to work. HAX has invested in various solutions for this, from floor cleaning (Avidbots) to toilet cleaning (Somatic). The dry cleaning robot startup Presso announced its solution initially intended for business travels was now in high-demand with movie and TV studios who are resuming operations. Youibot, an autonomous logistics startup, managed to repurpose their technology to provide disinfection with UV-C lights, and temperature detection. f. Testing with devices On the testing front, several countries have introduced testing stations that look like phone booths. Some are also using helmets with IR sensors to detect potential infections. Some wearable device companies like Oura and Strados Labs are applying their technology to pre-symptom detection or monitoring. g. Treatment Treating the virus is complicated, as it might also involve treating the immune response, and support the recovery of patients. Various large and small companies are working on vaccine candidates, Some companies are trying to develop new drugs, or repurpose existing ones for a faster time-to-market The lack of equipment — particularly respirators — is being addressed partly by repurposing other devices. Among them are snorkeling masks and BIPAP/CPAP machines. Finally, alongside this pandemic comes tremendous emotional harm due to stress, economic uncertainty and unemployment. Some companies such as Feel are working on low-cost solutions to help people improve their mental health. Part 2 Seth Bannon, Founding Partner at Fifty Years The Covid-19 threat is reminiscent of WWII, with potential deaths in the tens of millions. WWII gave us many tech innovations such as: mass production of antibiotics, blood plasma as a therapeutic solution, skin grafts, flu vaccine, radar, microwave ovens, pressurized plane cabins, nuclear power and the first programmable digital computer. It laid the foundation of technical progress for many years to come. A similar rally today could build solutions for the future. Everyone who can help should help, and 17 of our portfolio companies did. HelixNano (from the George Church lab at Harvard). Working on a vaccine to counteract SARS-Cov-2 evolutions and antigenic drift. BillionToOne found a way to run a test on Sanger sequencers at low cost and high volume. Opentrons (a co-investment with Khosla and SOSV) built a low-cost lab robot to automate liquid handling, already deployed in multiple labs around the world to test covid. Voodoo Manufacturing directed their cloud farm of 3D printers to focus on combating Covid-19 by producing PPE and more at cost. Solugen, that makes hydrogen peroxide, realized they had the capacity to make hand sanitizer and now do so pro-bono. Alex Morgan, Partner at Khosla Ventures Khosla has over $1B under management, including a main and seed fund. The goal is to ‘reinvent social infrastructure with technology’, looking for investments combining financial returns with societal impact (e.g. Impossible Foods, Color, etc.). We also have a list of companies responding to Covid-19. Genalyte has a FDA-approved testing solution that takes 15min. Current capacity is about~250k patients / month. Luminostics designed an optical test that cane be run with a small device attached to a phone. Pardes Bio is a recent investment working on a therapeutic using a protease inhibitor. Prellis Biologics (IndieBio/SOSV co-investment) is a tissue engineering company that can 3d print lymph nodes ex vivo to produce therapeutic antibodies (here are a recent video interview and media coverage). Some other investments also focus on the distribution of care, and particularly mental health, such as Ginger (remote service for mental health) and Flow Neuroscience (a SOSV/HAX co-investment offering a drug-free treatment for depression using an at-home brain stimulation device, already on sale in EU/UK). Jun Axup, Chief Science Officer & Partner at IndieBio IndieBio is the life sciences accelerator program of SOSV, based in SF and NYC and investing globally. It invested in 136 companies including Memphis Meats, Clara Food and Perfect Day in the cellAg space. CASPR Biotech uses CRISPR for low-cost testing (covered by NYT). Renegade.Bio was founded as a lab to test at high speed and large volume. ANA Therapeutics is repurposing an anti-worm treatment toward Zika, SARS and now Covid. Halomine found a way to keep surfaces free of viruses by stabilizing chlorine, making the protective film last up to 30 days instead mere hours. SmartSteward can track outbreaks within nursing homes, using algorithms to scan metadata from electronic health records and lab reports in real time, identifying critical changing patterns. The biotech renaissance is strong, but still has many unknowns: Are pandemics a new investable thesis? How do we get back to work, protect everyone? We need to stay nimble, and keep evolving. Part 3 Q&A moderated by Julie Wolf, Communications Director at IndieBio Q: How did IndieBio decide to invest in Covid solutions? Jun Axup (IndieBio/SOSV): Several are alumni who pivoted (e.g. Prellis), some simply needed more funding (e.g. Caspr.bio), some were opportunistic investments and some more philanthropic. The key was to fund companies who could have impact now rather than in a year. Q: For Khosla's startups, are pivots to Covid risky? Alex Morgan (Khosla Ventures): It varies a lot. Ideally we want to see long-term opportunities. Prellis, for example, are seizing an opportunity within a long-term plan. One challenge for diagnostic technologies is how you get paid, which is exposed to regulatory or policy risks. The landscape is changing and susceptible even to the election cycle. The current situation that delayed many procedures and treatments might push for a ‘pay for outcome’ model, which is more aligned with our investment model and the interests of patients. Q: How is 50Y looking at investing into Covid-related tech? Seth Bannon (Fifty Years): First, we offered a $25,000 uncapped note no questions asked to support any of our portfolio company who felt they had some kind of solution. For those needed more capital we had longer conversations. For new investments we don’t want to fund ‘covid-only’ solutions because it might be too difficult to build a business around, but most likely have applications beyond this pandemic, or beyond pandemics in general. For instance companies building infrastructure solutions, or take vaccine development from years to months, or found better ways to repurpose drugs. We’d love to see a great solution for at-home testing, maybe something CRISPR-based. Q: What is your biggest challenge in finding companies to invest in? Jun Axup (IndieBio/SOSV): Deployment and scaling is the hardest. We fund super early companies and getting through both regulations and manufacturing is a challenge, so we prefer teams that have some understanding of how to do that. Alex Morgan (Khosla Ventures): There is a lack of backchannel conversations that are not happening because [because of SIP/WFH], which could help find out about new companies or research. We’re trying with other media. Seth Bannon (Fifty Years): Because of the many solutions being developed, it is a challenge to find solutions that are uniquely suited to the pandemic, and whose solution and business would outlast it. I see how much they struggle focusing on some of the online instruction they have through school, and they’re a bit fatigued with “learning” right now. We tried doing a bit of scratch/scratch jr. I figured a fun-themed project could help them stay engaged with learning, but I’m struggling with where to start. How would you go about creating a course/activities (like Wes’ Javascript 30 course) specifically designed for primary/elementary aged kids? 30:52 - Q: How much should someone who wants to work as a web developer (starting in a junior position) know about data structures and algorithms? Should I practice algorithms and do questions before applying for jobs? 33:53 - Q: I’m working with a friend to start up a website for our YouTube channel, and we’re getting into podcasts too (not tech-related so no competition, no worries). I’m thinking about trying to host my own RSS feed for podcasts to save some bucks. Am I crazy? 36:27 - Q: Do you guys name your colors in terms of the color or the use of the color. For example, say you styled all your links to be purple. Would you name that color “purple” or “link”? 41:00 - Q: I’ve been listening to you for about a month and really dig it. I’m working on an app that will require a couple of different databases. I’ll need a database for user information, and a larger database for application data. The app does some analytics stuff, so data is critical. I’m getting lost in the world of hosted database options (mLab, Digital Ocean, etc.) and big cloud providers (AWS, Google, etc.). Could you guys talk a little bit about how you choose database hosting? Bonus question - have you ever used Auth0 or Okta for user authentication? 45:09 - Q: I’m a bit confused about using GitHub. What happens to the files that are ignored, but required for development? What’s the best practice for backing up both? I have used .env files, but not too sure how it works if it’s in the gitignore and the site is deployed via GitHub (like with Netlify). Right now I have a backup folder on my hard drive and I back up both the dev and the live versions with a timestamp, whenever I do a new ‘release’. Also, you spoke about Jetpack, and I’d be curious what’s the best way to do this with a cronjob for example. 48:50 - Q: I was laid off in early April because of COVID-19. I’ve been trying to file unemployment since then. The state unemployment office said they were launching an updated website for filing claims on Friday, April 24th. At 9:00am that day, they ran a banner saying demand has been so high that it’s affecting the process ‘despite rigorous testing.’ Why is this so hard to scale? 55:57 - Q: What is your take on all of these rails-like server side rendered React and GraphQL frameworks? Here is another one built by Michael Jackson, Ryan Florence and some others: https://twitter.com/remix_run. This of course is in addition to Redwood and Blitz.
