Felicity Jones Interview: From Like Crazy to Brady Corbet's Epic, The Brutalist

Brady Corbet's The Brutalist is epic. In fact, it's a three hour and 35 minute epic that afforded Felicity Jones a rather unique performance opportunity. Her character, Erzsébet Tóth, doesn't appear on screen until about halfway through the film, after its 15-minute intermission. The Brutalist begins by focusing on Adrien Brody's László Toth, a famous architect who flees post-war Europe with hopes of building a new life in America. Separated from his wife, Jones' Erzsébet, during the war, he settles in Pennsylvania alone with hopes she'll join him there soon. Eventually, László gets what appears to be a dreamy offer from a wealthy industrialist, Guy Pearce's Harrison Lee Van Buren. After coming to learn about László's famed work overseas, Harrison hires him to craft his own dream project, to build a grand scale community center in honor of his late mother. It's an opportunity for László to establish a foundation in his new home no doubt, but it's also one that's riddled with complications involving legacy and power. While Jones may not appear on screen during that period, Erzsébet's presence is felt via her own voice over and what she means to László. Essentially, the audience spends half the film awaiting her arrival and fantasizing about how it might play out. When the moment does finally come, anticipation is through the roof, and Jones makes the most of it. When Erzsébet enters the picture, alongside their niece Zsófia (Raffey Cassidy), it quickly becomes abundantly clear that she is an undeniable force determined to build the best possible life for her family in their new home. With The Brutalist now playing in select theaters, Jones joined me for a Collider Ladies Night interview to revisit the path she's carved for herself in cinema thus far, and to discuss making The Brutalist with Corbet, including her experience working on one particularly intense emotional beat that might very well be one of the best scenes of 2024. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

For this week's second podcast review, I am joined by Dan Bayer & Brendan Hodges. Today we're reviewing the latest film from Academy Award-nominee Noah Baumbach ("Marriage Story") as he adapts someone else's material for the first time, Don DeLillo's "White Noise." Starring Adam Driver, Greta Gerwig, Don Cheadle, Raffey Cassidy, Jodie Turner-Smith, André L. Benjamin & Lars Eidinger, the film is a satire of America in the 1980s with a stylistic flourish from Noah Baumbach unlike any we've ever seen from him before. The film had its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival, where it received mixed to positive reviews for its performances, music, tone, and complex adaptation by Baumbach. The film is now streaming on Netflix and is garnering an even more mixed response but what did are think of it, though? Please tune in for our review as we discuss these aspects, including its Oscar prospects and more. Thank you so much for listening. We hope you enjoy it.   Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... Greta Gerwig joins the show to talk about her role in Noah Baumbach's latest film, White Noise. Based on Don DeLillo's 1985 novel, the film dramatizes an American family's attempts to deal with the mundane conflicts of everyday life while grappling with the universal mysteries of love, death, and the possibility of happiness in an uncertain world.Gerwig shares her first encounter with the novel, describes how she unexpectedly volunteered herself to play Babette while Baumbach was working on the script, and provides a glimpse inside the film's choreography heavy rehearsals. Gerwig also reflects on meeting co-star Adam Driver back when she was a college student in New York City, reveals her goal of continuing to attend dance classes at 80 years old, and explains why getting to take her dog Wizard on a good, long walk is a major win.

The 60th edition of the New York Film Festival officially kicked off on September 30, 2022 with our Opening Night selection: the North American premiere of Noah Baumbach's White Noise, presented by Campari. At the film's press conference, we welcomed Noah Baumbach and select cast members Greta Gerwig, Raffey Cassidy, May Nivola, and Sam Nivola, composer Danny Elfman, and songwriter James Murphy in conversation with NYFF's Artistic Director, Dennis Lim. Their wide-ranging discussion covers adapting the "unfilmable" Don DeLillo novel, the story's frightening similarities to our current pandemic, working with a very large cast, and shooting in Anamorphic widescreen. White Noise opens in theaters on November 25th and will premiere on Netflix December 30th. Natalie Portman plays a pop star born out of tragedy in Brady Corbet's 'Vox Lux', a film that takes aim at the media and it's obsession with knocking down figures that they themselves have set up. This tangentially relates to the focus of 'Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile' a film which follows the trial of Ted Bundy (played by Zac Efron here).

A difficult movie, but a fascinating one, Josh and I fall on totally different ends of the spectrum of opinions on the film which makes for a great conversation.

Tomorrowland opened to some negative reviews and other positive reviews. I think this is a great movie that has a message that needs to be heard. This week we look at the movie with no spoilers in 10-minutes or less.   Director: Brad Bird. He won Oscar's for Ratatouille and The Incredibles. Screenwriter: Brad Bird (The Incredibles, The Iron Giant) and Damon Lindelof (Star Trek Into Darkness, Lost (TV Show))   Plot Bound by a shared destiny, former boy-genius Frank and optimistic teen scientist Casey embark on a danger-filled mission to unearth the secrets of an enigmatic place somewhere in time and space known only as “Tomorrowland.” What they must do there changes the world—and them—forever.   Characters Frank Walker (George Clooney)  As a kid, Frank Walker encounters Tommorowland at the 1964 World's Fair. Walt debuted the “It's a Small World” attraction at the event and while riding on the happiest cruise that ever sailed, Walker is selected to venture into Tomorrowland by a special pin. (See Trailer Below) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LhuuVhJrHRQ Somehow, Walker is returned to our world and become disillusioned about the future. When he encounters Casey Newton, he is thrust back into the fight for tomorrow. Walker is played by two-time Academy Award winning actor and director George Clooney. He is known for his roles as Danny Ocean in Ocean's 11 and Matt Kowalski in Gravity.   Casey Newton (Britt Robertson) As an inquisitive teen with a knack for fixing things, Casey Walker is obsessed with fixing the future. When she encounters a strange pin that takes her to another dimension, her curiosity is piqued. She sets out on a journey to find anyone and everyone who knows anything about the pin. View her featurette below. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GCfAjYBz3eA Newton is played by Britt Robertson. The 25-year-old actress is known for her roles as Aubrey Miller in The First Time and Cara in Dan in Real Life.     Athena (Raffey Cassidy) If you blinked, you'd probably miss Athena in the trailers. Aside from the featurette below, you probably wouldn't even know she exists. However, Athena is the reason Newton and Walker both encounter Tomorrowland. She apparently has a limited number of pins to give out and is looking for someone who can save the future. She is also well-trained in combat and will participate in action scenes, as seen below. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NSkF56CyYGE Athena is played by Raffey Cassidy. She played the young Snow White in Snow White and the Huntsman and Young Angelique in Dark Shadows.   David Nix (Hugh Laurie) While he is presented as a villain, my gut is telling me the David Nix character will be a little more complex than a standard villain. The Tomorrowland website describes him as an individual who prefers concrete science and data to dreamers. Nix is played by Hugh Laurie, who is known for roles as Mr. Frederick Little in Stuart Little and Dr. Gregory House on the television show “House M.D.”   Movie Clips  Glad you asked. Brad Bird has kept a tight lid on details for the movie, but little clips of the film have been released.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yp-qsp_oX0M   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9kmqchy8BE   Contact us: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DisneyMovieReview Twitter: @DSNYMovieReview Google+: https://plus.google.com/u/0/b/117568401234149523089/+Thedisneymoviereview/posts   Email: TheDisneyMovieReview@gmail.com
