In this episode of The Clinical Research Coach, host Leanne Woehlke sits down with Stacy Martin, who shares her journey of entering a clinical trial. Stacy talks about her mother's stage 4 uterine cancer diagnosis, which led to genetic testing that revealed a hereditary mutation called CDH1. This mutation increased the likelihood of cancer in Stacy and her siblings. Stacy describes the moment she discovered she was CDH1 positive, the challenges she faced afterward, and the lessons she learned through the clinical trial process. No longer having a stomach, Stacy has to eat more frequently to keep her energy up. Becoming a "professional snacker" led her to turn her newfound snacking habit into a business and Seahorse Snacks was born. Hey everyone, The Brutalist - the acclaimed, now 10x OSCAR nominee film - has now released in theaters nationwide in the U.S. and in UK theaters this weekend. This film premiered over 4 months ago now so, typically, I wouldn't feel much inclination to review it, especially since this film is certainly making my top 10 movies of 2024 list, which releases next week on this very show. The timing of the release as well as the plethora of OSCAR nominations it just received compelled me to put out a review though. So, here we go. Is The Brutalist deserving of its 10 Academy Award nominations and all the insane hype since Venice? Find out in this review! The Brutalist:Directed by: Brady CorbetWritten by: Brady Corbet, Mona FastvoldProduced by: Nick Gordon, D.J. But power and legacy come at a heavy cost.
Our latest guests on Soundtracking are Brady Corbet and Guy Pearce, respectively director and star of multi-award winning film, The Brutalist. In it, Adrien Brody plays a Hungarian-born Jewish architect who survives the Holocaust and emigrates to the United States, where he struggles to achieve the American Dream until a wealthy client changes his life. The cast also features Felicity Jones, Joe Alwyn, Raffey Cassidy, Stacy Martin, Emma Laird and Alessandro Nivola. The Brutalist is scored by Daniel Blumberg - and both Brady and Guy talk about its remarkable intricacies at length.
For this week's second podcast review, I am joined by Dan Bayer, Giovanni Lago & Brendan Hodges to review and discuss the latest film from Brady Corbet, "The Brutalist," starring Adrien Brody, Felicity Jones, Guy Pearce, Joe Alwyn, Raffey Cassidy, Stacy Martin, Emma Laird, Isaach de Bankolé & Alessandro Nivola. The three-and-a-half-hour film (with an overture, 15-minute intermission, and epilogue) has generated waves of enthusiastic praise, critical dissection, and astonishment over its independent production (shot for under $10 million) for creating such a grand and epic cinematic experience since its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival. What did we think of the story, its themes, the performances, cinematography, production design, and score? Is it about the journey or the destination? Please tune in as we discuss these elements, its awards season chances, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. Thank you for listening, and enjoy! For today's daily NYFF62 podcast, director Brady Corbet, co-writer Mona Fastvold, composer Daniel Blumberg, production designer Judy Becker, and cast members Adrien Brody, Felicity Jones, Alessandro Nivola, Isaach de Bankolé, Emma Laird, and Stacy Martin discuss The Brutalist, a Main Slate selection of the 62nd New York Film Festival, with NYFF Artistic Director Dennis Lim. An accomplished Hungarian Jewish architect and World War II survivor (Adrien Brody) reconstructs his life in the U.S. and enters the orbit of an obscenely wealthy captain of industry (Guy Pearce) in Brady Corbet's richly detailed, brilliantly acted recreation of postwar America. Interweaving a provocative tapestry of ideas around privilege, money, religious identity, architectural aesthetics, and the persistence of historical trauma, The Brutalist is an absorbing, brilliantly acted American epic that reminds us the past is always present. The Brutalist opens in select theaters on December 20th, courtesy of A24. To learn more and get tickets for this year's New York Film Festival, visit filmlinc.org/nyff
What a journey. We're rolling through our ninth discussion in our year-long theme of A DREARY YEAR OF VON TRIER. This US election year was guaranteed to feel heavy and hopeless and it's lived up to that spectacularly. Add a dozen Lars von Trier movies to that because why not? Today we talk of his third in his “Depression Trilogy” and it's definitely a fun one to trick your in-laws into watching. If you can talk your mother-in-law into watching the complete 5 hour and 20 minute director's cut of the 2013 film “NYMPHOMANIAC” then you deserve a large trophy at the very least. That's what Bob and Angela did. The whole damn thing. Charlotte Gainsbourg plays Joe, a nymphomaniac. She's found beaten and pissed on by Seligman, played by Stellan Skarsgård, an asexual and learned man who helps her out and hears her sordid stories of BJs, DPs, S&Ms, MMFs and you figure you would hear more about VDs, STDs and other things after sleeping with hundreds, maybe thousands, of people but not really. HPV at the very least. I think most of us have that one except Seligman. There is a home abortion in this movie so make sure you don't miss that. We got quite the ensemble that includes Shia LeBeouf, Stacy Martin, Christian Slater, Jamie Bell, Uma Thurman, Willem Dafoe, Mia Goth and more. The movie is called “Nymphomaniac” and it's by Lars von Trier and it's what you would expect so let's get up in them guts and talk about it. In the aftermath of multiple disasters in the US, Stacy Martin, the editor of Redbook Magazine said, “Although the national mood is somber right now, I take it in stride as a reminder of the true nature of life: It's a heady, scary, wonderful, sad, happy mix. Take each moment of each day and live it not as if it's your last- but as if it's your first, your best, and your only day.” That is so beautiful. And great advice. In the Bible, Proverbs 27, verse 1 it says “Don't boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring forth.” I hope this doesn't sound dark- but tomorrow is never promised. So live your life and live it well. Make today count!
Tune in as the Rebecca Hall of Fame comes to a close with its fifth and final episode of May! It's been such a great journey to explore her filmography throughout the month, and the conclusion shall arrive via Arthur's friend Jared returning to 2CC for a deep dive into The Night House, the 2020 horror movie that cleverly uses negative space to deliver some paranormal and psychological chills. Jared's pitch for a horror remake of Fifty Shades of Grey with a BDSM demon, Arthur's recommendation of a song from the boring and uncomfy Sydney Sweeney movie Clementine, and a discussion about the debatable existence of an afterlife comprise just a few of the talking points for this last episode of May. Directed by David Bruckner, The Night House stars Rebecca Hall, Sarah Goldberg, Vondie Curtis-Hall, Evan Jonigkeit, and Stacy Martin.

It's still Wet Hot Slashers Summer here on Slashers Podcast, and this week's Call Your Ghoulfriends episode with Mikey and Ade features our special guest, Micah, over from Damn, That's Scary Podcast. Never a dull moment with this one! This week's film is The Night House, starring Rebecca Hall as Beth, who is reeling from the unexpected death of her husband and is left alone in the lakeside home he built for them. She tries her best to keep it together but then her nightmares start to eat away at her, along with disturbing visions, all while she uncovers some dark secrets about her late husband, proving that ya never really know someone. The film also stars Sarah Goldberg as Beth's best friend, Claire, Evan Jonigkeit as her late husband, Vondie Curtis Hall as Beth's neighbor and Stacy Martin as Madelyne. The film is directed by David Bruckner, who you may already know from directing films such as The Ritual, VHS and 2022's upcoming Hellraiser. Find out why Micah fanboys over this guy in the episode! The film is super dark and a lot to unpack. Listen to our theories and let us know what you think! You can stream this on HBO Max, but it's also available on Hulu Premium, and for $7.99 to rent on Amazon Prime and Vudu. This week's Hidden Track is Obsidian Blood by Dancing With Ghosts. Phil, Jake & Jason rank pro wrestling icon “Macho Man” Randy Savage, New Wave vaudevillian Klaus Nomi, and Plackers Dental Flossers on the List of Every Damn Thing. If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook). We also have a subreddit!SHOW NOTES: Jake instructs listeners to send collectible clown figurine intel on to Jason on Instagram (@rehog), but it's probably better to tweet at him (@JasonMarmor) since you can't post links on IG. As he mentions in the episode, years ago when Phil was unemployed he saw an ad on Craigslist looking for a man to sit on balloons and pop them. This is a fairly common kink it turns out. It's a big world! Professional wrestling personalities mentioned include Hulk Hogan, Miss Elizabeth, Sensational Sherri, Ric Flair, Dusty Rhodes, “Mr. Perfect” Curt Hennig, The Rockers, The Rock, Rowdy Roddy Piper and New Jack. When Phil says “Vince” he's of course talking about Vince McMahon. Slim Jims still feature Randy Savage in their marketing! Phil refers to them as “beef jerky” but they're made out of chicken. Here's an awesome remix of the “Art thou bored?” commercial that Jake loves so much. Dexters's Lab was a cartoon in the 90s about a genius boy. He had a pet monkey that often had his own adventures in a superhero milieu, including this episode w/ Randy Savage, which draws heavily from an old Ben Grimm (aka The Thing) comic book. The American Dream's Hard Times promo is just a fantastic piece of work. Macho Man's “Speaking from the Heart” song from Wrestlemania: The Album is also quite incredible. The Hulk Hogan diss track from his 2003 rap album is pretty cool too. Here's the scene from the 2002 Spider-Man movie that features Randy Savage (with a side of Bruce Campbell). Is Jessica Rabbit more popular than Randy Savage on Google trends? They're comparable but every so often, Jessica Rabbit interests spikes. We discuss saxophone in rock music, as embodied by Tim Capello aka the buff sax player from Lost Boys & the Tina Turner video. Stacy Martin is the tattoo artist who did Jason's Klaus Nomi tattoo. Jake mentions German Expressionist cinema, which includes Metropolis and many other great (mostly silent) films. Here's the clip of Nomi backing up David Bowie on Saturday Night Live. The surgeon from Prince & the Revolution is named Doctor Fink. Jake originally thought the Klaus Nomi character on The Venture Bros. was supposed to be the guy from Prodigy. The Nomi Song is a documentary that Jason recommends if you want to cry. Nomi is sampled in “Beloved Freak” by Garbage. Here's the Nomi cover of “You Don't Own Me”. There's some pickle talk, including the controversy around the bread & butter variety.
This week it's our pleasure to welcome actor Stacy Martin to the podcast. She talks about her career, starting as the lead in Lars von Trier's Nymphomaniac, her thoughts on the craft of acting and working in multiple markets and languages!
Anna Smith has two open, feminist discussions with two great actresses. First up, Rosamund Pike talks about her latest movie, the fast-paced thriller I Care A Lot. She has received a Golden Globe nomination for her performance as Marla Grayson, a ruthless businesswoman who exploits the care home system. Rosamund sings the praises of Dianne Wiest and reveals her pride in the film’s LGBTQ+ representation. On sex scenes, she reveals a ‘graphic’ scene that didn’t make the cut, and discusses the introduction of intimacy coordinators on set. Next, Anna chats with Stacy Martin about her recent roles in sci-fi film Archive and serial killer series The Serpent. Stacy considers the challenges she has faced in her career, including the backlash she received for her first film Nymphomaniac. She also delves into how she chooses her roles and why she tries to swerve the love stories. In this chock-full feminist chat, Stacy discusses the pay gap, sitting on the 16 Days 16 Films jury, and why she loves podcasts! Stacy recommends The Ripper on Netflix, and Rosamund expresses her love for Chloé Zhao’s Nomadland. Part of Stacy Martin’s performance, in her wonderful new film “Archive,” involves essentially playing robots at various stages of development. She talks about the challenge that posed for her as an actor, and how director Gavin Rothery’s complete command of his vision helped her process. She takes me back to her days at the Actors’ Temple in London, and how an intensive workshop there changed her life and prepared her for the remarkable experience of her first film, Lars von Trier’s “Nymphomaniac.” She shares an important bit of direction that Lars gave her that blows my mind. We swap stories about Anne Wiazemsky and Anna Karina, and an appreciation for Carroll Baker, plus (*warning*) we spoil the hell out of “Archive,” so please check it out on VOD.
Director Gavin Rothery and actress Stacy Martin are here to talk about Archive. Gavin talks about the computer catastrophe that inspired the story, his admiration for Rod Serling and The Twilight Zone, and Stacy talks about the effects involved in playing J3 and voicing the emotional journeys of J2 and Jules, and committing to donuts. Directed by Brady Corbet, "Vox Lux" begins in 1999 when teenage Celeste (Raffey Cassidy) survives a violent tragedy. After singing at a memorial service, Celeste transforms into a burgeoning pop star with the help of her songwriter sister (Stacy Martin) and talent manager (Jude Law). Celeste's meteoric rise to fame dovetails with a personal and national loss of innocence, consequently elevating the young powerhouse to a new kind of celebrity: American icon, secular deity, global superstar. By 2017, adult Celeste (Natalie Portman) is mounting a comeback after a scandalous incident almost derailed her career. Touring in support of her sixth album, a compendium of sci-fi anthems entitled, "Vox Lux," the indomitable, foul-mouthed pop savior must overcome her personal and familial struggles to navigate motherhood, madness and monolithic fame.

Darren flirts with the dogs, Anthony shuns a desperate stranger, and we flex the parts of us you can’t see; plus one powerful eyebrow. Reviews include Lynne Ramsay’s ‘You Were Never Really Here’ (Joaquin Phoenix, Ekaterina Samsonov, Alessandro Nivola), the Amy Schumer comedy, ‘I Feel Pretty’ (Rory Scovel, Busy Philipps, Michelle Williams), and Michel Hazanavicius’ kinda-biopic, ‘Godard Mon Amour’ (Louis Garrel, Stacy Martin, Berenice Bejo). Names are butchered, stereotypical accents are utilized, and we push for the equality of nudity in film. Don’t tell us we don’t give you what you want, because we talk about Kevin, the season 2 premiere of Westworld, and Nymphomaniac volumes 1 AND 2. Keep on flexin’.
