Welcome to “What's Up With Water” - your need-to-know news of the world's water from Circle of Blue. I'm Eileen Wray-McCann. On March 20, the U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments in a lawsuit that could change water use patterns in the drying Colorado River basin. The Navajo Nation claims that the federal government has failed in its legal duty to ensure sufficient water for the tribe. That includes claims to water from the Colorado River, which is adjacent to the Navajo reservation. The lawsuit asserts that the U.S. government must determine the Navajo Nation's water needs and devise a plan to meet those needs. The water in the basin is fully spoken for, so water for the Navajo Nation would come from another use. Legal scholars who are not party to the lawsuit say that the Navajo Nation should prevail in this dispute for two reasons. First, the federal government has near total control of the lower basin of the Colorado River and second, the government has a longstanding legal obligation to secure water for Indian reservations. The states named in the lawsuit and the federal government have a different view. They argue that it is not the federal government's decision to make. Based on previous lawsuits, they argue that only the Supreme Court has the power to determine water allocations from the Lower Colorado River. Which interpretation the nine justices will support remains to be seen. A decision is expected in June. A study published last week provides fresh evidence that the world's weather is becoming more extreme. As the planet warms, high-intensity rain storms and prolonged periods of drought are happening more frequently. Researchers came to that conclusion after studying satellite data that shows the distribution of the world's water. Matthew Rodell, one of the study authors, explained the dynamics to the news agency AFP. Rodell said that a warmer atmosphere holds more water vapor, so that storms can release more rain. At the same time, higher temperatures increase evaporation, which dries out soils and contributes to drought. The researchers expect the trend to continue – as things get warmer, the weather extremes will intensify. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency took an initial step to control toxic “forever chemicals” in drinking water. The agency proposed first-ever limits for two of the chemicals, PFOA and PFOS. It also proposed regulating four additional forever chemicals as a group. Public health experts applauded the move, pointing to links between the chemicals and a range of illnesses, including thyroid problems, high cholesterol, and kidney cancer. Water utilities, however, cautioned that it will be expensive to update water treatment equipment to remove the chemicals. They say that unless more is done to prevent contamination of rivers, lakes, and groundwater, the cost of meeting federal drinking water standards will be transferred to citizens. The proposal is in draft form, and public comments will be accepted for at least 60 days. A final rule is expected next year. And that's What's Up With Water from Circle of Blue, where water speaks. You'll find more news and analysis - and a chance to support our work - at circleofblue.org. This is Eileen Wray-McCann - thanks for being here.

He sees his role as guide to those interested in acquiring the knowledge, skills and practices that will enable them to develop the characteristics that are conducive to self-realization, wellbeing and flourishing and. A holistic approach to yoga that embraces a broad spectrum of truth claims from past to present over various traditions and disciplines is his means. He also teaches capoeira, a Brazilian dance/martial art, to which h Broderick was introduced to yoga posture practice in 2000 while a graduate student in chemical engineering at Georgia Tech. During this time he embarked on a self-discovery process, exploring ideas about who he was while undertaking significant lifestyle changes to enhance his wellbeing. He also began to lose interest in his dream to teach engineering at a university. His experimentation in healthy living kindled an interest in serving others within the health and wellness profession. To the bewilderment of his research advisor and friends, after completing his PhD, he made the difficult decision to follow his newly perceived calling and forewent a potential career as a professor of chemical engineering. From his experiments in transforming his lifestyle through alternative approaches, he took a risk, and decided to study naturopathic medicine at Bastyr University in Seattle, WA instead of conventional medical school. While at Bastyr he furthered his own growth and came to a much better understanding of the root of suffering and the path to wellbeing. During this time his interest in yoga was rekindled as a result of his curiosity in psychosomatic healing. In 2009, a year after completing his Doctorate of Natural Medicine, he went on sabbatical to study yoga asana and meditation. While on this pursuit, he realized that yoga was much more than physical practice, and that his yogic journey commenced when he began the process of self-discovery back in 1999 before he ever took a yoga asana class. Broderick went on to get his teacher training certification in 2011 from the Mt Madonna Center under the guidance of master yogi Sri Baba Hari Dass. He has since been a dedicated student, practitioner and teacher. His interest is in a holistic approach to yoga as a means for self-realization that includes physical practices, breathing exercises, meditation, philosophy and selfless service.
Today on GBH Out Loud, you’ll hear Besha Rodell read her House Culture story called “The Pub, the Farm, and the Forest — A Return to Narnia,” published on November 14, 2019. Our House Culture series goes beyond beer—it’s a place where we can share stories of critical engagement, and ask readers to look closely at the parts of life that make it worth drinking. In one of our most recent House Culture pieces, we asked Besha, who is a food and culture writer (she currently works for the New York Times reporting on the dining scene in Australia) to write a piece for us. As she shares, sometimes the stories closest to us—the ones about our very identity and the way we interact with the world—are the most challenging, and rewarding, to write. Before Besha starts reading, you’ll hear her share how this beautiful essay came together—follow along as she reads by checking out her article at GoodBeerHunting.com. This is Besha Rodell reading her article, “The Pub, the Farm, and the Forest — A Return to Narnia.” Listen in.

Razor Making dreams become a reality has been the mission Rodell Razor has been on since he came into the world back on a chilly 39-degree day in Anchorage, AK. That cold, arctic January morning back in 1987 would forever change the dynamic of Rodell's significant journey through life. The first-born child to Jovan & Natalie Razor, Rodell always shown that his talents would be what propelled him into greatness. Due to circumstances beyond anyone's control, Natalie instantly became a single mother raising 5 beautiful children on her own. Even though Ms. Razor made sure she kept her children happy through the tough times, Rodell's youth was riddled with watching his mother work 2 and sometimes 3 jobs to try to make ends meet for their bare necessities. This not only sparked his desire to be a provider, but it gave life to Rodell's passion for wanting to help his mother in any way he could. As a child, Rodell's dream was to play professional football. He knew that a salary from the NFL would skyrocket his family's status from being restricted to poverty to wealthy overnight. All he had to do was remain focused. His work ethic on the field at Federal Way High School, in Federal Way, WA proved that he not only had what it took, but he could lead a team to victory. With his football achievements in one hand and his average academic achievements in the other, Rodell was accepted to Eastern Oregon University. His college career not only yielded an MBA in Business, but it afforded him the opportunity to exercise his networking abilities and forge valuable friendships with people who are now considered to be a part of his family. We are in the midst of a cultural shift from mass-market, generic outreach and offerings, to targeted messaging and product choice. With the adoption of social media outlets as forums for communications, customer expectations have changed. We expect companies to monitor our reactions and respond to us as individuals. Companies who adapt their products to match this cultural shift see winning results. Tesla took market share by allowing consumers to customize a car and have it delivered. Progressive created tools to customize insurance coverage. Amazon has fostered a norm that shoppers can have any product they want delivered cheaply and quickly. In the Age of Personal Choice, everyone wants their choices to be accommodated. In the face of these changing cultural expectations, generic outreach doesn't build engagement. According to Loop & Tie CEO, Sara Rodell, this is just the beginning of the consumer choice revolution. This trend has already affected the economy and in turn will change how businesses market to their customers. Special Guest: Sara Rodell.
In episode 45 I chat with Sara Rodell about starting her company Loop & Tie, her path to entrepreneurship (including a major pivot), and the learnings she has picked up along the way.
For their debut episode, Richard & Jazmin welcome the prolific and mysterious LA Weekly critic Besha Rodell as she talks about her humble journey in the world of food criticism, maintaining her secret identity all these years, and her thoughts on cultural appropriation in the restaurant industry.

Success boils down to understanding the needs and desires of your customer. Plain and simple. You need to discover what resonates most with customers, share that information amongst your team, and activate the idea. In this episode, Sara Rodell, Founder of Loop & Tie, explains how to execute this 3-step process to drive growth.
In his new book ‘Go Is No Thing’ Rupert Shortt argues that many ‘new atheists’ have a faulty view of God that doesn’t take seriously the philosophical arguments that thinkers like Thomas Aquinas gave many centuries ago for the existence of God. Rupert discusses the issues with atheist Jeremy Rodell, dialogue officer for the British Humanist Association. We also hear some feedback to the most recent Bauckham vs Ehrman shows. Colin Marshall sits down in Silver Lake with Besha Rodell, who has written about food in New York and Atlanta, and last year came to Los Angeles to become the Weekly's restaurant critic. They discuss the secret appeal and non-Australian origins of the Outback Steakhouse's Bloomin' Onion; her Australian youth, and the friends who insisted she join them at Koala Blue after she came to the States; what counts as authentic Australian cuisine, and the tortured question of "authenticity" in Los Angeles; her concerns with what people really eat; her predecessor Jonathan Gold's influence on the city's food culture; the appeal of putting yourself utterly at a restaurant's mercy; "ego-driven" versus "devotional" cuisine; the strange modern prevalence of kale salads; her preference for odd and uneven dishes versus perfect and derivative ones; how she got to know Los Angeles in the three weeks she had before moving here and then assembling the Weekly's 99 Essential Restaurants list; the paradox of more money on the west side and less food there; how far you have to go before a restaurant doesn't count as "in Los Angeles" anymore — or whether such a distance exists; the spread of this city's culinary interestingness, and how it compares, culturally, to Atlanta's divide between "Inside the Perimeter" and "Outside the Perimeter"; how ideally, a restaurant critic would move to a new Los Angeles neighborhood every two months; the advantages of the "bogus" system of star ratings, and why chefs want their stars; the current blowup in food interest, and what the internet has to do with it; how she came up through restaurant culture, and came to appreciate how you can't be "kind of a cook"; how you can't understand Los Angeles if you don't eat much here, and how best to understand it when you do go eating.
