Ryan O'Donnell is an activist who cares deeply about social and environmental justice. This Chicago native attended Howard University and is an endless well of talent. His wide array of skills makes him tend to enhance anything that he is involved in as he fights for justice including organizing to help refugees and connecting with animal rights and environmental activists. O'Donnell wants to shine a light on the plight of LGBTQI+ refugees, particularly in The Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya. The Kakuma Refugee Camp has always been full of problems: dust storms, high temperatures, poisonous spiders, snakes, and scorpions, outbreaks of malaria, cholera, and other hardships especially if you are LGBTQIA. Many of these refugees fled homophobic and transphobic violence in nearby Uganda but continue to face threats and violence from locals and other refugees for the simple reason that they are LGBTQI.  LGBTQI people in Africa are frequently subject to mob and state-sponsored violence and criminalization. Many are forced to become refugees, and when they flee for their lives and leave behind their homes, expecting to find safety—to get the rights that were denied in their home countries O'Donnell believes it is important to shine a light on the LGBTQI refugees in Kakuma and reminds us that “Until we are all free, none of us are free.” He works with "Team Rainbow Kakuma" a coalition of LGBTQI refugees in Kakuma, Kenya. They face constant anti-LGBTQI persecution and violence that UNHCR allows. The Coalition uses democratic principles to organize a network of LGBTQI refugees throughout all of Kakuma to support each other.

Discover what’s possible when behavioral science is creatively broadcasted.Ryan O’Donnell is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst, videographer, and entrepreneur. Through quick and easy-to-digest YouTube videos, he makes behavioral science publicly accessible so people of all ages can experience their version of success. In the summer of 2019, Ryan collaborated with the Global Autism Project to document our training approach and highlight our partners at Kaizora Center for Neurodevelopmental Disabilities, in Kenya. You can watch these videos on his YouTube channel, The Daily BA. In previous episodes, we’ve talked about how Applied Behavior Analysis, or ABA, can be used to effectively treat individuals with autism. Given Ryan’s passion for disseminating behavioral science, and how it is often misunderstood, I thought he’d be the perfect person to come on the show and explain what it is exactly. Ryan provides a condensed history of behavioral science — from early controversial practices of behavior modification to modern ABA used in autism services — as well as relatable examples of its applications. Ryan also shares his experiences from working with the adult population and describes the different services that are available for families. For more information about Ryan O'Donnell and the work he’s doing, please visit his website: The Daily BA. ----more----We appreciate your time. Joining me on the show for this episode is science communicator and content creator Ryan O’Donnell, a.k.a RyanO. Ryan wakes up daily trying to fill the gap between the amazing science of behavior and the billions of people that it could impact for the better. He does this by creating content for behavioral science enthusiasts via The Daily BA on YouTube, The Controversial Exchange and CHATTcon while preparing for his next big venture. (He gives us a sneak peak into that during our podcast chat.)Ryan started his career as a Behaviour Analyst but his interests have grown to include everything from entrepreneurship, artificial intelligence, reinforcement learning, social media, podcasting, and vlogging. These interests and skills have allowed him to work with a lot of great people, travel and share the science of behaviour with the world at large and that’s what we are talking about today - how to bring the science of behaviour to a bigger world. In this episode I ask Ryan:What is Behaviour Analysis and why does it matter? What attracted you to the field? How did you move from straight BA work to film making and digital content creation? And why? What it the bigger purpose for you of bringing the science of behaviour to YouTube and the digital world? How did you develop your video and content creation skills? How do you think our communities can benefit from bringing behaviour to a bigger world? If you have a passion for science communication, helping others to learn, grow and flourish or the innovative use of digital content and story telling, don’t miss this fantastic conversation. For a full transcript, guest profile, expert tips and the resources mentioned in this episode, visit potential.com.au/podcast or join the conversation on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter

What does Private Equity investment, diversity in ABA, and ABA in sports all have in common? Session 98 with Beverly and Kirk Kirby

The Behavioral Observations Podcast with Matt Cicoria

What does Private Equity investment, diversity in Applied Behavior Analysis, and Behavior Analysis as applied to sports all have in common? It just so happens that these are the topics I chatted about with Beverly and Kirk Kirby of Team ABA! At last year's ABAI, Rick Kubina introduced me to this dynamic duo, and boy do they have a great story to tell, and I'm frankly quite grateful that they're doing so on The Behavioral Observations Podcast. Along with Rick and Mark Dixon, Beverly was on a panel that I chaired that discussed the role of big money in ABA. Mark discussed the business side of PEAK and Rick talked about the founding and subsequent purchase of Chartlytics by Central Reach. And then Beverly shared the story of how the Kirby's started the Sparks Group, a company that was dedicated to serving the underserved in the DC Metro area. Sparks went on to be acquired by a private equity investor, and Beverly shared the lengthy and challenging process of selecting an investor that would continue to provide high quality ABA services in an ethical manner. Whether you're a business owner or not, this is a great story on its own! The Kirby's went on to found the aforementioned Team ABA (and as an aside, check out and follow their Facebook page here as they post lots of cool stuff!). The services Team ABA provides are quite varied, but a lot of their focus is on using ABA for improving sports performance, addressing wellness, and helping organizations run more effectively. And if you caught the last episode with Rick, he mentioned some of the cool stuff that they're doing in the realm of sports performance. We of course dig into this in more detail in this episode. The Kirby's are also passionate about improving the diversity in our field. They've done quite a bit of outreach to Historically Black Colleges to provide internships and other opportunities for students of color. This is an issue that does not get talked about a lot in our field, and to be candid, this is a long-overdue discussion on this podcast. I’m grateful they were able to share this with me, and by extension, the broader audience of Behavioral Observations. This episode is brought to you by: Behavior University. Then consider attending the OBM 2.0 – The PROSOCIAL Teaming Model which will be taught by Drs. Darnell Lattal and Thomas Szabo. This workshop is being put on by my friends at Connections Behavior Planning and Intervention. It’s being held at Green River Community College, Auburn, Washington on January 18th and 19th. Attendees will learn the ProSocial model: evidence-based practices to promote employee engagement, cooperation, high-level performance, and complex organizational problem-solving. The ProSocial approach incorporates findings from Nobel Prize winning research conducted by Elinor Ostrom, with corresponding findings from research in evolutionary science, behavior analysis, ACT, and Organizational Behavior Management. Participants will practice core skills and then implement them in a series of challenging role-plays that simulate real-life organizational behavior crises. This workshop will walk attendees through the entire process of creating sustainable team-based outcomes through expert instruction and experiential learning. The workshop itself will provide 16 CEU’s, and there’s a remote follow-up option that can extend this to 22 CEU’s. Space is limited for this event, and the prices go up as we get closer to the dates, so you’re going to want to register for OBM 2.0 straight away. And to help defray costs, the folks at Connections have offered listeners a discount. So for more information, click here, and be sure to use the code podcast25! And this one too... The 5th Annual ABA Leadership Summit is taking place on November 8th, 2019 at the Hilton Orange County in Costa Mesa California. It will also be streamed online, so you can learn on your couch... in sweatpants. This event will provide 6 Supervision Type 2 CE’s, and will feature speakers such as Sarah Trautman, Paul Gavoni, Nic Weatherly, Brett DiNovi, and Issac Bermudez. It's right around the corner so you'll want to register right away if this is something you're interested in. Click here for more information! Today, the Getting Smart team is bringing you a conversation with David Platt and a group of students on tech tips, podcasting, and computer science — live, from Covina High School.   So who is David Platt? David started out as a German teacher at Covina High School in Southern California. After a few sections of German were canceled, Platt scrambled to reinvent his teaching career. David started teaching keyboarding and then moved on to computer applications in the early 2000s. The rising prevalence of computer science led him into coding and he began to view Java as a third language. He earned a certificate for teaching Computer Science and is in his second year teaching Advanced Placement Computer Science Principles.   Soon after that, Platt recruited the Tech Squad — a group of students that provide tech support across the school. Two of Platt’s students, Gabriel and Kayla, launched a podcast — Tech Tips With Tech Squad. A podcast recorded in Covina High School focused on discussing tech, events, and tech tips, from a student’s point of view.   In today’s conversation, Tom talks with David, Gabe, and Kayla to learn more about this cool way for kids to learn about technology and share it with the world.   Key Takeaways: [:15] About today’s episode. [1:19] Tom welcomes David onto the podcast. [1:49] David introduces the students he has with him today, Gabriel and Kayla. [2:14] How long has Covina High School had a podcast? How did it come to fruition? [3:37] What does David teach at Covina? [6:13] What year are Gabe and Kayla in? [6:33] What computer classes have Gabe and Kayla taken? And how did they meet? [7:44] Why Kayla originally wanted to do a podcast focused on technology. What has she learned since working on it? [8:34] Gabe talks about his interest in technology, background in computer science, and dreams for the future. [10:25] Who of the three first spotted the rise of artificial intelligence? [12:21] Gabe’s sense of what artificial intelligence could mean for his life. [13:05] Gabe speaks about his interest in hardware rather than software. They discuss how they prepared, who they met, what they learned, and a preview of who they interviewed for their next episode. Stay tuned! CUE, formerly, Computer-Using Educators, is a nonprofit educational corporation founded in 1978. CUE's goal is to inspire innovative learners in all disciplines from preschool through college. With an active current membership of thousands of educational professionals, CUE supports many regional affiliates and Learning Networks. CUE Conferences are California’s premier educational technology events. CUE is the largest organization of its type in the west and one of the largest in the United States. We were able to interview Dave Lee (@AODaveLee), one of the co-hosts of “The Waves of Tech” Podcast, on the vendor floor at CUE. Their podcast covers all different kinds of technology and how it relates to you. Both Shannon and Brenda were also interviewed for the Waves of Tech podcast. Dave and his co-host Steve are also the Founders of International Podcast Day (@intlpodcastday), which celebrates podcasting around the world. Brenda and Shannon are big fans! Both Brenda and Shannon really enjoyed the “Tosas Talking Tech” podcast and their pre-conference helpful hints in their “Spring CUE 18 Preview”, Episode 68. Tosas Talking Tech is a podcast that is hosted by two teachers, that talk about technology in the classroom.  Shannon was also interviewed on for their podcast. P.S. Their secret word is “Snickers”. Also helpful was the CUE sponsored podcast “Check This Out” podcast, especially their “What to Expect when you’re expecting to attend a conference”, episodes 76 and 78. He hated it, followed a passion for tech, and ended up joining a company early that eventually sold to Yahoo for $850M. He grew a business unit from $0 - $20M and left Yahoo to startup. Fast forward 3 meandering years trying to generate sales and Ryan decided to build a product to speed up the time to revenue for any business selling a product or service B2B called Sellhack.
