Greek writer Herodotus "invented" history by turning away from myth to a new kind of writing. And although he wrote his Histories nearly 2,500 years ago, local author and classicist Emily Katz Anhalt argues that his example and prose are more relevant than ever. This hour, we look at what we can learn from Herodotus and the ancient Greek myths. GUEST: Emily Katz Anhalt: Professor of Classics at Sarah Lawrence College. She is the author of Enraged: Why Violent Times Need Ancient Greek Myths and Embattled: How Ancient Greek Myths Empower Us to Resist Tyranny. Her new book is Ancient Wisdom for Polarized Times: Why Humanity Needs Herodotus, the Man Who Invented History MUSIC FEATURED (in order): Thracian Gaia – Daemonia Nymphe Road to Hell (live) – Original Cast of Hadestown Dance of the Satyrs – Daemonia Nymphe Greek to Me – Dugger Band Hymn to Bacchus – Daemonia Nymphe History Has Its Eyes On You – Hamilton Support the show: http://www.wnpr.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Best known for his figurative paintings and pastels, which evoke a luminous, dreamlike reality, TM Davy conjures intimate worlds where figures glow with an almost metaphysical presence, transcending the purely visual. Light and form take on an ethereal quality, reflecting emotions, memories, and the quiet subtleties of human experience. Every brushstroke, every shift of light, seems imbued with a deeper resonance — suggesting that the figures portrayed are not mere representations but vessels of something otherworldly, carrying with them the weight of untold stories and silent truths.Blending careful realism with archetypal symbolism, Davy's work explores love as a sphere of magic and protection — a space where human connection is not just physical, but transcendent; where bonds are forged in realms of the spiritual and the unseen. His figures often seem suspended in a state of grace, bathed in light that is both gentle and intense, creating an atmosphere of reverence and awe. His work suggests that love, in its purest form, is both a force of transformation and a quiet shield — invisible, radiant, and profound.Grounded in the belief that all of art history informs the present, Davy's technique is marked by a virtuosic layering of colour and a masterful use of light and shadow. His attention to texture and hue draws deeply from classical tradition, while his handling of paint — confident, gestural, at times joyously loose — is unmistakably contemporary. With a lineage that stretches from Reynolds to Turner, Davy takes us to a threshold where intimacy, mystery, and the inner self converge. He stands at the intersection of classical technique and modern sensibility, drawing on the rich tradition of portraiture to create images that feel at once ancient and immediate. Through his luminous compositions, he invites us to pause and reflect — to step into a space where the boundaries between the real and the imagined dissolve, and where the soul's journey is lit by love, presence, and the quiet mysteries of being.Over the past few months, Davy has been living and working in Margate, creating an exhibition deeply attuned to its elemental surroundings. Rooted in the present moment, yet echoing timeless myth, the works are shaped by the sea, the chalk cliffs, and the ancient caves that punctuate the coast. These landscapes are not just scenery but portals, inhabited by archetypal beings — Satyrs, Mermaids, White Horses — who rise from seafoam and shadow, conjured from deep cultural memory as much as from the terrain itself. The show is at once an homage to place and a meditation on the mythic — a bridge between the ancient and the now.Davy has the rare ability to render his subjects and scenes with an acute physical presence — they feel almost touchable, real — all the while keeping us fully aware that these are just paintings. He revels in paint's materiality, with areas of sumptuous brushwork, loose rhythms, and a heightened palette that amplifies the intensity and luminosity of the image. His approach knowingly risks oversentimentality in the pursuit of a higher realm of expression: an emotional frequency that calls us to remain in the present, to feel fully, and to glimpse — even momentarily — the shared magic of human connection.Follow @TMDavy on Instagram.TM Davy's Tine Mara runs from 27th April until 22nd June 2025.Preview is Saturday 26th April 6-8pm, Carl Freedman Gallery, Margate, UK.Visit @CarlFreedmanGallery and https://carlfreedman.com/exhibition/tm-davy/ Hosted on Acast. The Mythic Masculine

Greetings all - I'm excited to extend a special invitation for men who wish to dive into the cauldron of mythopoetic masculinity and eros. But before I get to that, I want to acknowledge a milestone: it's been over five years since I began The Mythic Masculine podcast. Time, as always, passes like a blink. This journey began after my previous film project, Amplify Her, which explored feminine archetypes through the lives of DJs and producers. That collaboration had me seek out writers like Marion Woodman (Dancing in the Flames) and Clarissa Pinkola Estés (Women Who Run With Wolves) and opened my path into mythopoetics. In the wake of Amplify Her, I realized I knew little about the masculine archetypal realm. When audiences asked if I'd do a similar project for men, the idea for a podcast took root. I was inspired by Iron John by Robert Bly—a book I found in my grandfather's study after his passing. That encounter was a doorway to the lineage of the mythopoetic men's movement, a movement that once sparked men's circles across the country. As I interviewed guests like storyteller Martin Shaw, Bill Kauth (Co-founder ManKind Project), and storyteller Michael Meade, the podcast became a space to weave voices from past and present, exploring shifting understandings of gender, myth, and archetypes. If you're curious about the history and insights from these five years, you can access my webinar An Introduction to Mythopoetic Masculinity here.In the last year and a half, The Mythic Masculine evolved. A pivotal moment came in the summer of 2023, when my longtime friend Deus Fortier and I hosted MXM—an event exploring masculinity, eros, and myth. We combined Deus' somatic and breathwork practices with my mythopoetic flavourings. The experience affirmed that men need spaces to explore these “forbidden” topics, reclaim vulnerability, and awaken their noble, erotic essence. This offering evolved into Awakening the Wild Erotic, which we've now held multiple times over the last year. For those unable to attend in person, we created The Deep Masculine, an online cohort blending ritual, somatics, and myth. Now, Deus and I rre thrilled to announce the next stage: an ongoing online men's circle, The Satyr's Den.Satyrs—wild, primal beings of Greek myth—embody the uninhibited joy of nature and erotic vitality. The Satyr's Den is a space for men to reclaim this energy in a way that honors life. Too often, men either misuse this power or suppress it altogether. This circle offers a path to mature, embodied Eros and relational mastery. The Satyr's Den includes:* Monthly Live Group Calls* Exclusive Podcast Conversations* Transformative practices and rituals* Webinars and community supportThis is for men with prior experience in men's work, shadow work, or similar transformational spaces. If you're new to this terrain, consider attending Awakening the Wild Erotic or Deep Masculine first.Special Offer: Join by the end of December to lock in a founding member rate of $49/monthYou'll also gain immediate access to an my conversation with Deus about his journey through the ISTA (International School of Temple Arts) series. If you feel called, apply here and see if the Satyr's Den is right for you.Thank you for walking this mythic path with me. More offerings are on the horizon—webinars, guest teachers, and courses in 2025. The journey continues, and I'm excited for what's to come.In gratitude,IM Get full access to The Mythic Masculine at themythicmasculine.substack.com/subscribe

Greek Food, Buzz-kills, & SatyrsBy Quinn_McMullen, in 8 parts. Listen to the ► Podcast at Explicit Novels. Chapter 13On Tuesday morning I had the following text exchange:Christina: Are you going to FY Convocation?Quinn: Yes. You?Christina: Can I sit with you?Quinn: Absolutely. Meet at my office at 11:15.Full-time faculty are required to attend three formal events per year: the commencement ceremonies in December and May, and the First Year Convocation at the start of the academic year. We have to wear our academic regalia, or as many faculty members call them,  our wizard robes,  because we look like something out of Harry Potter. As we were walking into the convocation, Chris was behind me, ensuring she would sit next to me.Francesca was slightly ahead of me in the next column, "Quinn, how was your summer?""It was nice and quiet.""Ready to start playing again?'"Just let me know when?""Maybe next week some time. I'll send out a poll for best times.""I'll look for it.""Can we use your barn to rehearse again?""Sure. As we started to file into the seats, Chris grabbed my arm and Zoë was suddenly next to me. I let her go in first. I was blessed to have my lovers on either side of me. We filed in and luckily we had seats out of the sun. I figured if the convocation went for more than ninety minutes we would be in direct sunlight. Black polyester wizard robes plus direct sunlight would mean sun-dried professors in short order.Zoë leaned over and whispered in my ear, "I imagine if everyone knew what has gone on between us."I passed the message to Chris who reached for my hand and hid it under the material. She whispered back, "They'd be scandalized."I smiled, "By the way, I love the way your hair smells."I whispered to Zoë what Chris had said and she in turn held my hand under the robes. Without a doubt, it was the best convocation I had ever been to.Wednesday morning dawned crystal clear. Overnight we had some rain showers and the temperatures could only be described as refreshing. Chris had said she wanted to run, so I was in the barn, getting my bicycle down, when she drove up.Chris got out and leaned against her car door, "Have I told you that you look good in bike shorts.""I think you have, but I don't mind hearing it again."She closed the door and revealed that she was wearing a pair of skin-tight, yellow Lyrica running shorts, her mons and pubes providing topography to the fabric.I remarked, "Speaking of looking good in shorts. You are looking good Dr. Ashby.""Do you like them? I bought them especially for you.""I love them. I may have to ride behind you so I can admire the view.""As long as you have my water, you can ride wherever you want. The neighbors might think you're a dirty old man though.""Good point."Chris stretched in the drive since the grass was wet. Soon she was running and I was practicing my bicycle domestique duties. As we were entering my drive after the run Chris got a charley horse in her calf.I put her arm over my shoulder to take off some of the weight. "Let's get you inside and I'll rub it out.""Damn this hurts."I helped her to the couch and had her lay down. She had a large knot in her right calf and I gently massaged it. Her groan was part pain, part relief.I started talking to fill the silence, "My college roommate was a runner. He was big on bananas for the potassium. Want one?""Sure."I came back with a banana and a bottle of Gatorade. "This may help with your electrolytes.""Thanks. When you get the knot out, would you mind massaging the rest of my legs?""Would I mind massaging a beautiful woman's legs? Gee, there's a difficult question to answer.""You're impossible."I began working her muscles starting with her feet. The groans started almost immediately. I worked first her right, then her left leg. Chris spread her legs as much as the couch would allow as I worked up to her crotch. I made sure to make contact with the fabric stretched across her vulva as often as possible. I jokingly apologized each time. Then I began on her glutes. I massaged them hard, but was again in teasing mode,  making contact with her fabric-covered anus on several occasions.Chris groaned again, "All this is making me wet."I placed my hand over her crotch. "Yes, I think I can detect some moisture.""I think in the future, a massage will be part of any showering event. Next time I'll get naked first.""I like that idea.""Right now I think you need to lead me up to your shower and clean me really good.""It will be my pleasure.""Mine too." When my class let out on Wednesday, I headed straight to my date with Violet. Her apartment was easy to find and I was knocking on her door two minutes early. She answered it and looked surprised.I said, "Hi. What's the matter?""I've never had a guy come to my door before. Usually, they just send me a text that they're here.""I'm old school. I'll even hold the door for you.""That's so sweet."She gave me a peck on the cheek and we headed to my car. As promised, I opened the door for her. As she was getting in I was again struck by her waist-length black hair. She wore a sundress that had some kind of mustard floral pattern, a stunning match for her raven locks. When I got in, Violet gave me a nice smile, "I know my generation gives your generation a lot of shit, but I kind of enjoy this chivalry stuff."Looking at her I was struck again by her hazel eyes. They were simply enchanting.I smiled, "I don't know if I would call it chivalry. That's the way my father taught me how to treat a lady.""Well, it is very nice. I know some women might object, but I enjoy it.""So where are we going for dinner?""I thought I would give you two choices. We have a nice Italian restaurant and a new Greek place that I have heard really good things about.""They both sound great. Do you have a preference?""I've never had Greek food.""Are you feeling adventurous?""Yeah.""Then Greek it is." As we were driving I was hoping we wouldn't need reservations. Wednesdays usually weren't busy days in the restaurant world. Luckily, my hunch was correct and the hostess found us a very nice table on the patio overlooking the river.Opening the menu, Violet looked a little overwhelmed. "I'm not sure what I should get.""Is there anything you don't like?""I'm not a fan of avocados, but that's probably not an issue here."The waitress came over, "Can I get you anything to start?" She had a bit of an accent."Violet, would you like anything to drink?""A glass of chardonnay, please."The waitress nodded, "And you sir?""I think I'll have the same thing. Could we have an order of these Turkish Cigars?""I'll put that in and be back to with your wine.""Efharisto.""Parakalo."Violet smiled, "You speak Greek?""You just heard most of it.""That's funny," She read the menu, "Spinach and feta wrapped in phyllo dough then lightly fried. That sounds good.""I remember eating something like that when I was in Souda Bay, Crete."The waitress returned with two glasses of wine. "Have you had a chance to decide on an entrée?"I smiled, "Sorry, we were talking. Please give us a couple more minutes."Violet was studying the menu. "Is there anything you would recommend?""Greek food is known for lamb. Anything with it is bound to be good. I've had kuzu makarna and sarma before."Violet read aloud, "Grilled lamb tossed with linguini. I'll stop right there. That sounds wonderful."I picked up my wine glass, "Well, here's to a wonderful research assistant. Thank you so much for your help."We clinked glasses, "Here's to working with a real gentleman."The waitress returned with the appetizer. "Are you ready to order?"Violet pointed at the menu, "I would like the kuzu...""Kuzu makarna. Very good and sir?""I would like the sarma. Oh, wait I see you have souvlaki. I think I'll have that.""Very well. I'll put your order in."Violet speared a cigar and placed it on her plate.

There was a bit of a delay for this episode—sorry! When you party with the satyrs for the sake of episode data, you party hardy. But in the end, we have some thoughts about the kith and their presentation in Kithbook: Satyrs. To overcome the fairly one-dimensional sex maniac trope, the kithbook situates them within an extensive fae history of Greece, argues that passion can go in many directions, gives some insights into how satyrs age... not all bad stuff. That said, it's middle of the road for a splatbookl, introducing some interesting ideas without pushing the kith in any exciting new directions—which they could have benefited from. If they're your favorite kith, it's certainly worth the read. Fall gets me excited and fall color is a crazy combination of blooming plants and plants with leaves changing color as they prepare to go dormant. Crazy fall! Mountain oxeye (Heliopsis parviflora) is a real borderlands species, found from 4,000 to 8,000 feet in the mountains along the Arizona, New Mexico, Texas border and southward into Mexico. I learned that the red bordered satyr (Gyrocheilus patrobas) flies from mid August to November and can be found in the mountains of southeastern Arizona. I had a couple friends who also noticed large groups of them flying and puddling along creeks in the Chiricahua Mountains. I think it is so cool that the host plant for this beautiful butterfly is bull grass (Muhlenbergia emersleyi), a favorite bunch grass of mine that has tall purplish seed head plumes. Another good reason to head for this hills this fall; mountain oxeye and red bordered satyrs await you. Oh my! The photos of mountain oxeye are mine. The red bordered satyr on Ageratina is courtesy of my friend Taylor Anne. Thank you Taylor.

We start off with the idea of talking about art techniques, tips and tricks we've mastered and could help people with but the cast turned into a discussion about drawing male and female characters- also trans, androgynous, etc. There's an art to representing gender in imagery! It's super important to remember that the way we see gender in art is mainly culture based rather than an innate biological reaction and the perception of gender in art is different according to your cultural background. It's basically a visual language that everyone learns, but as an artist you have to learn to actually “speak” it, and that's not as straight forward as you think. A rough example of of how culture based our perception of gender in imagery is: - In most Western art the “male” is the default. We take for granted that a figure is male in art unless it's augmented in some way, the most basic version is the stick figure. These are men. To make a female stick figure you add long hair, a dress or boobs. Some or all of that, it doesn't matter. And this scales up to other representations. A natural, more realistic depiction of a female person won't always read as a woman in art unless they are “feminised” in some way, i.e. a prominent bust, removing angles and lines and adding soft, rounded features, featured lips, larger eyes, thin waste, wide hips, long legs, large thighs, styled hair, thin neck, large head. And doing any of that to a male figure is a way to “feminise” them or blend their gender. -In comic art from places like Japan and Korea it's the opposite somewhat, especially manga. The female form there is more of the default. Male characters involve a lot more augmentation to create a “masculine” effect, sometimes bordering on caricature, as can happen with female characters in Western art. A generic male manga character would typically read as more “feminine” if dumped straight into a western context. In times past the focus was more on primary (genitals), or secondary (beards, boobs etc), sexual characteristics, i.e the Venus of Willendorf (a very female form) and male figures with disproportionately sized penises. While early Egyptian sculpture is pretty androgynous in his regard, male and female are not well differentiated, the main focus is on the build - eg. men having slightly broader chests. Early Greek sculpture even more so with simple abstract forms representing “humans”. Much later on this changed into a more separated, codified style: men being heavy, muscular, bearded, women being soft and slim, with youth of both sexes being more androgynous. Interestingly genitals were very diminished in this art, penises were small and flaccid, while vaginas were never depicted. Though it was a different story with the art intended for more secular, “common” consumption, which could show pornographic scenes (mainly 2D). Art featuring Satyrs or Priapus massively exaggerated the genitals for deliberate comedic effect. For them focus on genitals didn't indicate masculinity or femininity so much as comedy, stupidity, shame, or porn. Basically gender in art isn't about genitals or genetics, it's all culture based and you need to learn the visual language of your audience to make yourself understood by them, as well as to confuse them or subvert their expectations! What trouble have you had when depicting gender? I always run into issues myself. I make my women too angular and my men are too slim. Born and raised in Virginia and quickly became obsessed with groups such as Black Flag, Sabbath, Pentagram and all the underground heavies I know the listeners love and appreciate. Burgess would soon start his own group, Satan's Satyrs, and would go on to record the first album all by himself and even playing all the instruments  himself before it became an official group that would go on to release half a dozen incredible records before laying it to bed in 2019. Burgess joined the almighty Electric Wizard during that period and well... the rest is history! In today's special mini-episode, Genny flies solo as Katrina takes one small step for woman, one giant step for adulthood. And, of course, left to her own devices, Genny chooses to talk about satyrs, those Ancient Greek mythological creatures who kind of look like the devil, but who are really just looking for a good time. She discusses their origins, and the difference between satyrs and fauns and Faunus and Pan and Dionysus….well actually, you just get to listen to her spiral into a ball of confusion about the difference between all these characters. We're not quite sure if she came to a conclusion, so you be the judge: are fauns and satyrs the exact same? Or was Genny's confusion legit?Don't worry, listeners, Katrina will be back next week, and we will be discussing cities, both real and imagined, so if you're sitting on the next best urban fantasy, you're going to want to take a listen. Satyrs in Books, Film, and Pop Culture:Mr Tumnus in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. ... Welcome to Episode 22, SATYRS & A CYCLOPES You've probably heard of satyrs, but not thought beyond their strange appearance. They are the combination of 4 or 5 animals, including humans. The big difference between satyrs and humans, though, is in their approach toward life.  In this episode, satyrs collide with a one-eyed giant called a cyclopes--as well as encountering Greece's wily warrior, Odysseus. “Drink, dance & be merry” was the satyrs' motto. No wonder moralists like the ancient writer Hesiod considered them worthless. This episode is narrated by mythologist and best-selling author, Patrick Garner. His Garner's Greek Mythology is unlike any other Greek history series. Here the Greek gods are viewed as if they were anything but mythical...If you love these podcasts, you'll also enjoy new stories about the gods in Garner's novel Homo Divinitas, now available as an audio book on Amazon.com and Audible.com.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/garnersgreekmythology)
