Demand for solar, storage and electrification is at an all-time high in the U.S. But economic and political uncertainties have clouded up my 2025 crystal ball. Nevertheless, here is what I see going into 2025. 1) No one knows what will happen with IRA tax credits and rebates 2) TPO system demand will increase if residential IRA incentives are reduced. 3) Utilities throughout the U.S. will increasingly exercise their monopoly power to suppress or outright prohibit customer-sited solar and battery systems 4) Electricity demand will increase more slowly than utilities predict 5) Heat pump rebate process was broken even before it started 6) Heat pumps combined with solar will shine in 2025 7) New UL-3741 solar rapid shutdown codes add price pressure to micro-inverter and optimizer component suppliers 8) Battery system shortages will continue in 2025, but newcomers will be hard pressed to meet this demand 9) Battery systems with integrated inverters will become the standard 10) “Grid Defection” will enter the energy system lexicon For the details on my Ten Solar, Storage and Electrification Predictions for 2025, please check out the Energy Show website at www.energyshow.biz
In this Convo of Flanigan's Eco-Logic, Ted speaks with Dr. Missy Stults, Sustainability and Innovations Director at City of Ann Arbor, working with all city operations, residents, businesses, the University of Michigan, nonprofits, and others to make Ann Arbor one of the most sustainable and equitable cities in America. Dr. Stults has dedicated 20 years of focus and national level expertise on urban resilience and climate change in an array of roles, prior to joining the City. She has worked on adaptation to climate change since 2004, as the Climate Director at ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability and as a consultant to philanthropic organizations. Missy holds dual PhDs from the University of Michigan in urban & regional planning and natural resources & the environment. She also has her Masters in Climate and Society from Columbia University, and undergraduate degrees in Marine Biology and Environmental Science from the University of New England. She and Ted focus their conversation around some big and recent news out of the City: 79% of Ann Arbor voters voted to form a Sustainable Energy Utility (SEU). An SEU is another form of utility, rooted in energy efficiency, activated locally, and intended to be an accelerated pathway for the community to promote clean energy to meet its 2030 climate commitment. Ann Arbor's SEU is an opt-in, supplemental community-owned energy utility that will provide energy from local solar and battery storage systems. It will also implement networked geothermal systems beginning with a 232-home project in a low income neighborhood, also serving a public school and community center. Thanks to the SEU, green energy will be provided to residents and businesses through direct installations on their properties, as well as through small-scale distribution systems such as networked systems or microgrids.Missy and Ted discuss the benefits of the City's SEU: improved energy reliability at times when the grid goes down through increased access to solar and energy storage and shared geothermal systems - all City owned, energy justice initiatives, including broad and deep access to renewable energy, and the creation of programs for low income and underserved residents, including workforce training opportunities, and the expansion of weatherization services.

Hear Bill and Gloria chat with their good friend, Jim Brown, Senior National Sales Manager for LG Electronics Energy Storage Systems. Jim has been instrumental in developing relationships across the country with renewable energy dealers whose focus is assisting homeowners wishing to protect their homes and families in the event of a power outage. Living in the Sunshine State is a true delight until Mother Nature decides to send a tropical storm or hurricane our way. Then it is time to make a decision on how to prepare for an event that can bring a loss of power and darkness, where once there was light. The LG Home 8 ESS (Energy Storage System), is specifically designed to provide power when the grid is down. When teamed with a Solar-Fit solar power system, the LG Home 8 creates a perpetual power plant, as the sun charges the Home 8 during that day, and the Home 8 powers the residence at night. Think of the LG Home 8 like a generator...but without the fumes, the maintenance, the noise, and the requirement for fuel. The fuel is provided for free... by the sun. How cool is that? Jim does a wonderful job of explaining the operation and the benefits of using and storing renewable energy. We will be visiting Jim's LG display in Anaheim, California this week at RE+, the largest solar and solar storage conference in America and I am sure we will have a chance to have him share more information with you, our listening audience, next week. Hear Bill and Gloria talk about the wonderful world of solar storage. Did you know that solar power, combined with solar storage, can protect your home in the event of an unexpected power outage? Why should this be a concern? Well, if you live in Florida, and the TV screen shows that small dot off the coast of Africa is getting bigger...and the weather reporters start to get more excited...that means a hurricane is brewing and no one knows for sure where it will land. As beautiful and welcoming as our state is, the one weather report that no one wants to hear is..."a hurricane is heading our way". If a storm of great magnitude hits our area, and the power goes out...there is no way of knowing when it will come back on. Downed trees and power lines create issues for all, as even if we have a generator, there may be no way to get fuel. By contrast, solar power with battery storage will allow us to keep our food fresh, our lights on, and our communication and home security systems working as well. Join us for this important discussion about protecting our homes and families during a power outage by using the Sun's free energy, and having it available to use at night or when the street lights go dark. It is always better to be prepared...than to wish we were prepared! Give us a call today if you would like to learn more about protecting your home and property. (386) 441-2299Support the Show.

Earn, save, protect - energy storage is revolutionizing the way we think about and utilize electricity. Batteries are no longer just backup power sources - they have become assets capable of providing a multitude of services to the grid and customers. Earn - you can turn a battery into a cash machine by providing ‘ancillary services' to the grid operator with your battery. Save - you can reduce demand and capacity charges by using the battery to discharge during peak load hours/days. Protect - you can use a battery as a source of backup power during grid outages. Together, this ‘value stack' is the enchilada that customers are feasting on in many markets across the US and around the world. In this episode of the Clean Power Hour, host Tim Montague interviews David Braun, VP of Sales and Marketing at Intelligent Generation, about how adding battery storage can unlock additional value and revenue streams for behind-the-meter solar projects in PJM territory through this "value stack."They discuss concepts like energy arbitrage, capacity charge reduction, ancillary services, and resilience. The value of each depends on local energy market rules and tariffs. David explains how Intelligent Generation's software platform optimizes battery dispatch to maximize savings and earnings. This can improve solar project economics by 6-12 months (In Tim's experience this is a very conservative assessment - you can often 3x the value of a project by adding BESS). Key TakeawaysUnderstanding the "value-stack" of energy storage includes energy arbitrage, reducing capacity/transmission charges, providing ancillary grid services, and enhancing resilience.Importance of partnering with companies like Intelligent Generation early in project development to properly size and model the financial benefits of adding energy storage to solar projects.Recognizing the unique value propositions and revenue opportunities that energy storage can unlock in different energy markets (e.g., PJM, MISO).Staying informed about rapidly evolving battery incentives, tariff structures, and regulatory landscapes across different regions.David BraunIntelligent Generation Support the showConnect with Tim Clean Power Hour Clean Power Hour on YouTubeTim on TwitterTim on LinkedIn Email tim@cleanpowerhour.com Review Clean Power Hour on Apple PodcastsThe Clean Power Hour is produced by the Clean Power Consulting Group and created by Tim Montague. Van Badham and Ben Davison look at Morrison's promises on workplace laws and what the real impact will be for working people. They also give a roundup on the changing COVID rules and election state of play. Morrison's campaign continues to take place in workplaces where workers are being offshored, wages cut, temporary migrants exploited and former Liberal Minister's chair the board. The work of unions in exposing these travesties while also fighting for better wages, safer workplaces and more secure jobs might be why Morrison wants to double the fines on unions, it is certainly why you should join your union australianunions.org.au/wow Van and Ben look at how Morrison could put forward policies that will cut wages by up to $14,000 when wages have already been going backwards and we are in a cost of living crisis. They explore how the cashless debit card, and Morrison ideological framework for "welfare", combine with his anti-worker agenda to create the kind of trickle up society he wants for Australia. Labor has announced their NDIS reform agenda. Ben shares the story of GT to demonstrate how broken the NDIS has become for participants, workers and families. Van shares her experiences with the MyAgedCare system. The need for Labor's changes to get rid of the "cowboys" is highlighted by one foreign private equity backed "platform" making a 14% margin from NDIS and Aged Care services! The good news is about solar power being stored on a microchip that lasts for up to 18 years! You can develop enough renewable energy to power the world, but without energy storage systems, those developments are rendered somewhat moot. To achieve President Biden's target of 90% renewables by 2035, the US needs an additional 9 terawatts of solar storage. What do our current storage solutions look like? Are batteries leading the charge? To answer those questions David turns to Rebecca Ciez, Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University. David and Rebecca look at the current storage options. Are batteries powerful enough to deliver power during outages or periods of no sunlight? Rebecca talks about the materials needed for solar batteries and how we can improve the technology to reduce the strain on supply chains. Investment and government incentives are then thrust under the microscope by David, before the discussion wraps with examining the technological advancements in the space. This week, we finally left behind a destructive regime that thwarted environmental policy at every turn. We exchanged it for a government putting climate experts and clean-energy doers in its highest ranks in a way that no prior administration has done before. What comes next?First up this week: If Biden wants his $2 trillion climate spending plan to make a bigger impact, should he emphasize rooftop solar and small-scale batteries? A leading modeler says a local solar-storage plan could save hundreds of billions of dollars as we build out the net-zero grid. Then: the board members of major corporations are often ignorant about climate change and what it takes to address it, according to a new report from NYU’s Stern business school. Why is that true – still? What can be done about it?And last: Should you sign up for your utility’s green power program? Is there a better way to guarantee that your monthly power bill supports the world you envision? We’ll answer a listener question.Recommended reading:VCE: Why Local Solar for All Costs LessLocal Solar For All RoadmapLA Times: Boiling Point: How rooftop solar could save Americans $473 billionBloomberg: Many Corporate Boards Don’t Fully Understand the Climate CrisisHarvard Business Review: Boards Are Obstructing ESG — at Their Own PerilNREL: Voluntary Green Power Procurement - 2019 Utility Green Pricing RanksEnergy Sage: What to look for, and availability of community solarThis podcast is brought to you by Sungrow, a leading provider of PV inverter solutions around the world. On Thanksgiving, you might have missed our excellent interview with Solar+ Storage entrepreneur and solar pioneer Arnold Leitner. Well in that episode, which I highly recommend you revisit clicking here, we glossed over a fun fact that his company YouSolar, Inc. is among the only 13% of companies that have launched a regulated crowdfunding campaign on a website called StartEngine and raised more than a million dollars, which helped to keep you solar alive during the pandemic, no less. Today we’re chatting again with Arnold to dig a bit deeper into exactly what this entailed and better understand how and what they accomplished. So if you'd like to hear how to get 500 customers and a million dollars in equity in 90 days through crowdfunding, using a verified platform and a tested strategy, well, you're in the right place. And also, if you're interested in your own crowdfunding campaign, well, you are in luck, because I've partnered with StartEngine to offer you $1,000 towards your campaign marketing. You can shoot me an email via nico@mysuncast.com with StartEngine in the subject line, and the details of your company and the campaign that you're interested in. And I'll make that intro, you'll be on your way to $1,000 towards your crowdfunding marketing campaign. Today we are going to explore what it looks like to develop a Solar+ Storage project at scale. As we enter into the Solar+ Decade, storage is increasingly becoming an area of expertise for the industry’s leading EPCs and Development firms. Those of you familiar with Strata Solar won’t need an introduction to this North Carolina based EPC that has quietly dominated the Southeast markets for a decade. One of our LATAM Market Solar Warriors, Josh Rogol, joined Strata Solar to run their Energy Storage division. Today, he along with his colleagues Will Mitchell and Garrett Lehman, are going to help us understand the development of a truly remarkable achievement from this company: the 400 MWh Battery Energy Storage System recently approved for construction in Ventura, California. Last week, I participated in the first-ever virtual e-conference in the solar industry: the Midwest Solar Expo. Thanks to a virtual platform called Virbela, everyone created their digital avatars, walked around the virtual campus, and attended diverse sessions and panels. Every morning, I had the SunCast Morning Show, presented by LG! What you are about to hear next are excerpts from those morning shows. We started with a "what-to-expect" overview of the event, and then we talked about what's happening in the solar market, broadly speaking, from the perspective of our guests: Brian Lynch, Director of Solar + Storage of LG Electronics, Eric Pasi, Chief Development Officer of Impact Power Solutions, and Rex Kehoe, Director of Partnerships of Solar.com If you want to check what the Virbela digital platform is about, check the videos of these morning shows on our Youtube channel. On this special episode of the Experts Only podcast, Jon Powers moderates the keynote panel at Solar Storage & Finance 2019 (New York City, 10/29/19). "Terawatts & Trillions" explores the need for trillions of dollars in investment if we are to hit our climate change mitigation goals. At the same time, the power sector is undergoing a fundamental shift as generation becomes more decentralized, storage matures and comes down in cost and more technologies hit the sector. These factors create a huge opportunity for investors but the industry needs to provide comfort that the risks are low to attract more institutional funds. The panel discussion features: - Mona E. Dajani, Global Head of Energy and Infrastructure, Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP - Rael McNally, Director of Real Assets, Infrastructure, & Renewable Power, BlackRock Alternative Investments - Simms Duncan, Senior Director of Project Finance and M&A, Lightsource BP

Could you do us a favor? Take our listener survey so we can give you more relevant content: bit.ly/gtmpodcastThis week on Watt It Takes: how a computer nerd who loved assembling electronics became obsessed with designing a solar-storage system to light up Africa. In this episode, Powerhouse CEO Emily Kirsch sits down with Xavier Helgesen, the co-founder and chief technology officer at ZOLA Electric.Zola is a provider of solar and storage systems in Africa. Since its founding in 2012, the company has served over a million people with clean power in five countries.Over the years, Zola has evolved from a small, scrappy startup that offered very basic energy packages into a hardware company that installs sleek, scalable power systems that function better than the grid. “[Our goal] was not to be worse than the grid, but available anywhere — but to just be better than the grid. For solar and batteries to fundamentally be cheaper and more reliable than the grid. And if we succeed in that in the developing world, then the market is almost limitless,” says Helgesen. In this interview, Helgesen talks about how he first got interested in energy access, the complexities of setting up a company as an outsider in Tanzania, and how Zola shifted into designing its own hybrid system. This conversation was recorded live at Powerhouse’s headquarters. Welcome to Episode 45 of SunCast. We're here to help you unlock your potential as a leader in the solar industry. The recent Solar Pioneers Series we have begun, and some upcoming series on Solar Storage, Understanding Solar Finance, and more are aimed at helping you unlock the potential stored in the wisdom of Other people's struggles, growth and success stories, so I hope you keep coming back for more! Today, we'll take another pause in the Solar Pioneers series, returning to Latin America and a discussion I recorded live at the SolarPlaza Unlocking Solar Capital event in Miami back in June. The first segment of this week's show (about 11 minutes) is from the "Keys to unlocking Capital for the Offgrid Market" panel moderated by Robert Constantino, with guests JUAN FERMÍN RODRIGUEZ CEO & CO-FOUNDER // KINGO ENERGY JOSÉ ORDÓÑEZ CO-FOUNDER // HYBRICO ENERGY TECHNOLOGIES ANDY BINDEA FOUNDER & CEO // SIGORA INTERNATIONAL ANNE GERSET SENIOR IMPACT INVESTMENT MANAGER // ENGIE FERNANDO ALVARADO PRESIDENT & CEO - SUSTAINABLE ENERGY CENTRAL AMERICA They discussed: How to obtain financing for off-grid projects Keys to making off-grid business models bankable and best practices in risk mitigation Opportunities for telecom integration in Latin America and possibilities for PAYG business model Overview of business models with potential in mini-grid and off-grid segments I wish I had recorded the whole thing, but hopefully, the bits we got were insightful! And the second segment of the show (about 30 min) is from a session we called CEO Spotlight: Two Off-grid companies with vastly different approach to the market Andy Bindea and Juan Fermin tell-all with Nico Johnson It's a candid live session with 2 previous guests of the show, Episodes 031 & 032 respectively. These are two of the smartest and hardest-working young entrepreneurs I've had the pleasure to interview, and they've both raised a lot of money! I hope you enjoy this unscripted free-form session where I get into the differences between their two approaches to building an off-grid solar company in Latam. I hope you enjoy both segments, and that you consider attending a future SolarPlaza conference. Thanks again to SolarPlaza for all the support and for letting me run around like a reporter at this event. Also mentioned in the show, SPI is in a couple of weeks! Let's meet up! I'll be attending the annual Tweetup put on by my friend Tor Valenza, aka Solar Fred, and Kiterocket Tue, September 12, 2017 5:00 PM – 6:30 PM PDT LOCATION Flex House (Booth 6340) Mandalay Bay Convention Center http://bit.ly/spitweetup Hey I'd love to know, what are you struggling with?
