When 19 year old Sydney Powell was charged with her mother Brenda's 2020 murder, she pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. Investigators believed Sydney had beaten and stabbed her mother to death to prevent her from finding out the truth of Sydney being suspended from her university. But Sydney's defense claimed she had a psychotic break. Sydney's fate and guilt remains up in the air as her original conviction was overturned and prosecutors are asking the Supreme Court to reinstate the conviction. Click here to join our Patreon. This episode is rated a 5 (on my Serious Crime Scale). Now, as you can probably tell from the title on your screen, this is an UPDATE to a previous episode I covered about a year ago, back in March 2024. That episode, Chronicle 72, was titled “Suspension Sparks Murder.”In that episode, I told you the chilling story of Sydney Powell, a college student at the University of Mount Union in Ohio. After being placed on academic suspension for poor grades, Sydney's defense claimed she suffered a psychotic break, which led her to brutally attack and kill her mother, Brenda Powell. But prosecutors argued—and successfully proved in Sydney's September 2023 trial—that she was fully aware of her actions when she beat her mother with an iron skillet and stabbed her roughly 30 times with a steak knife. The jury ultimately found her guilty of murder, and a judge sentenced Sydney Powell, then 23 years old, to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 15 years. Now, you might think that would be the end of the story—a conviction, a sentence, and justice served. But as we know, court cases rarely end there. Appeals are a huge part of the process, and in December 2024, an Ohio appeals court made a surprising move: they REVERSED Sydney Powell's conviction for her mother's 2020 murder.Today, I'm bringing you Part 2 of this update in a mini episode, where I will share all the details about the shocking development and where the case stands now, in 2025. We've seen our fair share of heinous crimes that involved a snap - someone had a life-altering moment and lost their mind, leading to the frenzied commission of a horrible crime. The case we're discussing today (in our opinions) is not that. Sydney Powell was a college student who was expelled when her grades dipped below probation standards. Instead of coming home with her tail between her legs, she lied to her parents and continued to live in/around the dorms and even attend classes. When it appeared that the "jig was up" because Sydney's mother, Brenda, got a phone call from Sydney's university, Sydney brutally murdered her mother with a frying pan.

Today is Election Day—at long last. I am exhausted, and I suspect many of you feel the same way. I am in Georgia to cover this important day in history for the PBS News Hour. I'm sure you know by now Georgia is one of the seven swing States where the actual decision will be made on who is our next president. Despite no evidence to support the notion, Donald Trump and his allies have repeatedly questioned the Integrity of the vote tallying process in this country. Georgia became one of the main targets of these so-called election deniers in the wake of the 2020 election. But long before the likes of Mike Lindell and Sidney Powell descended on places like Coffee County to try and steal the presidency from Joe Biden, Donna Curling was raising questions about the security and integrity of the machines that Georgia uses to record and tabulate votes. The lawsuit, now called “Curling v. Rafensperger,” began when Donna had just moved to Georgia and voted on machines made by Diebold, which left no verifiable paper trail of voter intent. She was dismayed by this, eventually leading her and the other plaintiffs to sue the state in 2017 to stop using the machines. The machines that the state bought in 2019 to replace the DREs are so-called Ballot Marking Devices made by Dominion Voting Systems. Curling and her fellow plaintiffs believe these devices are still vulnerable. They have consistently advocated for what computer scientists say is the gold standard for voting: paper and pen. Oh, the irony. So, the suit remains active even as the BMDs do here in Georgia. Hopefully, election deniers will not raise false allegations about the performance of these machines - using them as a way of planting seeds of doubt in the Integrity of the election. As for Donna Curling, she will continue her fight to have Georgia join the 70% of voters in the United States using hand-marked paper ballots. I had a great conversation with her. I hope you enjoy it. #ElectionDay #Democracy #VotingIntegrity #newshour

Special Counsel Jack Smith's recent court filing details not only the crimes committed by Donald Trump but the crimes committed by his alleged co-conspirators, folks like Rudy Giuliani, John Eastman, Sidney Powell, Kenneth Chesebro, and others. Smith included this information for a reason: the legal doctrine of co-conspirator liability provides that once someone joins a conspiracy, that person can be held criminally responsible for every crime committed by every other member of the conspiracy, provided the crime was a reasonably foreseeable consequence of the nature of the conspiracy. Conspiracy law further provides that every incriminating statement made by every member of the conspiracy is admissible against every other member of the conspiracy if the statements were made during the course of and in furtherance of the conspiracy. Glenn discusses, in English rather than legalese, these two legal principles as they apply to Trump and his co-conspirators, as detailed in Smith's 165-page court filing. If you're interested in supporting our all-volunteer efforts, you can become a Team Justice patron at: / glennkirschner If you'd like to support us and buy Team Justice and Justice Matters merchandise visit:https://shop.spreadshirt.com/glennkir...Check out Glenn's website at https://glennkirschner.com/Follow Glenn on:Threads: https://www.threads.net/glennkirschner2Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/glennkirschner2Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/glennkirschner2Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/glennkirsch...See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Can Jack Smith's new filing secure a conviction of Donald Trump? Spoiler alert: it's complicated. In this all-new episode, legal experts Asha Rangappa and Renato Mariotti dive deep into the complexities of the latest unsealed filing in the Washington D.C. district federal court seeking to break through presidential immunity and put Donald Trump on criminal trial for crimes stemming from his alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election. Subscribe to our Patreon here, where paid members will get access to exclusive portions of this show. patreon.com/reallyamericanmedia Our hosts take a comprehensive look at the strategic elements and rigorous arguments presented in the immunity brief, which serves as a roadmap for Jack Smith's bold new prosecution strategy based on a fairly recent, superseding indictment. And they'll provide insights into how Smith is specifically challenging Trump's claim of presidential immunity, asserting that his actions were in his capacity as a presidential candidate, rather than in an official capacity. You'll hear about the extraordinary level of detail in the filing, which weaves together a variety of evidence to paint the picture of Trump's alleged conspiracy and misconduct. Renato highlights Smith's strategic use of Trump's tweets, which provides a clear differentiation between his official and personal statements. Asha and Renato also break down the significant role of Trump's legal advisors like Rudy Giuliani and Sidney Powell, who not only provided legal cover for questionable activities, but may have also contributed to the smokescreen of legitimacy around claims of election fraud. Lastly, Asha explains how the committee also laid the groundwork for much of the evidence now seen in Jack Smith's prosecution filing. Our hosts reveal the impact of the January 6th committee's findings on shaping public understanding of these events, and explore the potential defenses Trump will likely employ. We hope you enjoy this episode. Be sure to join us next week as Asha and Renato continue to untangle the complexities of all of the most important legal drama in America's history as a democracy. Jack Smith's filing on Jan 6 reads almost like a novel—with Trump shrugging about Pence having to be evacuated, mocking true believer Sidney Powell, and implicating himself with a damning phone-data footprint. Plus, life as a CNN anchor, the evolution of conservative media, and no, Megyn, Kaitlan is an Alabama girl. Kaitlan Collins joins Tim Miller.
Melania Trump has been almost completely absent from her husband's reelection campaign, and a former Trump official believes he knows the reason. According to Anthony Scaramucci, the big reason why Melania isn't hitting the campaign trail is because she hates her husband and wants Kamala Harris to win in November. Scaramucci may or may not still have connections inside the campaign, but you don't even need insider knowledge to see that Melania can't stand her husband. Also, a group of Donald Trump's election-denying allies from Pennsylvania have been hit with a million dollars in fines for their involvement in the scheme to get their hands on voting machines in Fulton County, Georgia. This was the scheme that was put together by Sidney Powell and led to multiple criminal charges against Trump and his allies in the state, and now the law is coming for everyone else involved. And Donald Trump has managed to once again anger his MAGA base, and this time it happened in a state that he can't afford to lose: Florida. Florida conservatives are furious at Trump because he recently came out in support of a ballot measure that would legalize marijuana in the state - something that he understands is going to bring a lot of people to the polls. This is the second time in the last few days that Trump has managed to alienate parts of his ever-shrinking base, and he can't afford it at this point. Finally, Donald Trump's speeches are becoming more and more incoherent as his cognitive issues take their toll on him, but the media isn't giving nearly enough attention to these glaringly obvious problems. In a recent op-ed, an author called out the media for refusing to cover Trump's mental problems with the same veracity and enthusiasm that they had when they covered President Biden's mental flubs - and once Biden dropped out they stopped talking about the issue altogether. In 2000, Republicans stole Florida by scrubbing voter rolls and stopping the recount. In 2004, Republicans stole Ohio by suppressing the vote through deliberately engineered long voting lines and other election day chaos. In 2024, Republicans are throwing everything they can at Georgia. Republican officials in the state are helping them, even those harassed by Trump's Big Lie. If MAGA can't steal the Electoral College outright, their fallback plan is to get close, drawing a tie. This would send the election to the House of Representatives. There, MAGA loyalist Mike Johnson, who blocked urgently needed Ukraine aid for six critical months, giving Russia the advantage on the battlefield, would likely pick Trump. The Senate, in control of Democrats, would pick the Vice President, likely Kamala Harris, who would then very likely be replaced by Trump's White House as the Heritage Foundation massacres the government with Project 2025, Christian nationalism's decades long plan to establish a dictatorship. They have 10,000 Trump loyalists already in place, ready to carry this out, according to a recent report by ProPublica. In March, the U.S. sanctioned two PR firms in Russia hired by the Kremlin to manipulate Americans into spreading disinformation to “divide and conquer” Trump's opposition in the 2024 election. So it begs the question, why isn't the DOJ, the FBI, the Department of Homeland Security, and Secretaries of State stepping up to stop homegrown threats?: Why is the Christian nationalist group Ziklag allowed to fund EagleAI, which empowers MAGA activists to challenge voter registrations, including 10,000 voters in Georgia? (Remember, Trump only needed 11k votes to win Georgia in 2020). Why is the Department of Homeland Security allowing voting machines in Georgia or anywhere in the country whose data was breached by MAGA loyalist Sidney Powell, with that data already spread among MAGA and possibly to foreign adversaries, like Russia? Why is the DOJ letting Elon Musk fund a new version of Cambridge Analytica, targeting voters in swing states? Why are the Secretaries of State allowing around 70 MAGA loyalists with histories of refusing to certify elections to remain in positions of power in 16 counties in six swing states, including Georgia, Arizona, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania, especially given the history of such loyalists to break the law, as they did in Georgia, helping Sidney Powell steal sensitive voting machine data? This week's bonus show also looks at J.D. Vance's war on people who don't birth children. That brings us to this viral quote from a recent article published on the site of The Heritage Foundation, architects of Project 2025: “Joseph Stalin had an utter disregard for human life, and his regime claimed the lives of 9,000,000-20,000,000 of its own subjects. Yet even Stalin understood that society depended on strong, intact families.” This is an actual quote from Heritage Foundation Senior Research Associate Emma Waters. Her piece was taken down after it went viral, but you can read an archived version in the show notes.
