My guest this week is Rob Lee Andrews, president and CEO of CommunityWorks, a company that empowers the unemployed and those with barriers to employment to become self-supporting through job preparation and placement. Rob is a published author and a serial social entrepreneur whose life mission is to align businesses with peoples' needs, to keep money in communities, and to empower others to create social change in minute and then massive ways. My guest this week is Steven Izen, founder and CEO of Lokai, the iconic bracelet brand infused with elements from the highest and lowest points on Earth. The white beads are infused with water from Mt. Everest, the highest point on Earth. The black beads carry mud from the Dead Sea, the lowest point on earth. The idea of Lokai came to Steven when his grandfather was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. The diagnosis made Steven think about the highs and lows that everyone experiences. He wanted to make a product for himself and others as a reminder to stay humble through the highs and hopeful through the lows. 3:59 – Steven 101 Most importantly, he is a father of two and a husband. Secondly, he is an athlete and entrepreneur. He came up with the idea for Lokai as a freshman in college. 5:23 – An early entrepreneur His father and grandfather were entrepreneurs. Steven is into woodworking and had a custom wood pen business in high school. 8:22 – Starting Lokai Steven thought about his own personal highs and lows and how he could make jewelry with the highest and lowest points of the world. His dad told him it was the good idea but said he needed to make it happen. The mud is a lot easier to get. A lot of beauty products are made with mud from the Dead Sea. The water from Mt. Everest took longer to get, and he had to get connected to a climbing group. He employs a team of Sherpa's to climb Mt. Everest, bottle the water and bring it back down. 16:35 – Social media The value in Lokai is to the story that people attach of their own highs and lows. Steven's company tried to learn about people's stories, including celebrities and influencers. 20:50 – Why Lokai? My guest this week is George McGraw, founder and CEO of DigDeep, a human rights nonprofit serving 2.2 million+ Americans without sinks, bathtubs or toilets that the rest of us take for granted. While most people think of the “water crisis” as a problem in Africa or India, more than 2 million Americans still don't have clean, running water or basic plumbing at home. George started DigDeep to help those communities build and manage their own water systems, advocate for their rights, and teach all Americans to use our precious resources more intelligently. George is an avid speaker and writer and has been published by The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Nation and many others. He has been profiled by NPR, Vice, and Forbes, and spoken at events hosted by the Clinton Foundation, The Atlantic and Ford. 4:35 – George 101 DigDeep is based in Los Angeles and is a non-profit, not a charity. George has always been a little bit of a water nerd. My guest this week is Cary Heise, executive director and founder of Designed for Joy, which provides women in crisis with stability through employment and support. Cary grew up in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and has lived most of her adult life in Raleigh. Her faith and international mission experience working with women's artisan co-ops in Central America and Africa inspired the birth of Designed For Joy. Cary is a serial entrepreneur and has founded small several businesses around creating community for women in the Raleigh area. She is a big believer in encouraging women to pursue their passion. 2:41 – Cary 101 Cary is married and has two teenagers. She works with about 20 other nonprofits in her area to help women in difficult situations. She sells jewelry, bags and home décor. Her company is five years old, and she has hired 97 women. 7:27 – Becoming an entrepreneur When her kids were toddlers, she was a stay-at-home mom but kept creating businesses. My guest this week is Robert Craig, an innovator, entrepreneur and creator of Robert Craig Films. He has a long history of taking start-ups and guiding their growth to become successful companies. Before he produced movies, Robert founded Gutterglove in 1996, the leading gutter guard supplier in the U.S. In 2019, he founded Robert Craig Films to produce inspirational and hopeful movies that make people smile and bring a high level of entertainment with spiritually uplifting storylines to the viewer. My guest this week is Traci Barrett. She was one of the founding members of the national cable network, HGTV. Traci enjoyed the exciting and amazing ride of taking an idea and turning it into a billion dollar media empire. But almost two decades later, with a family and plenty of life ahead, success was no longer the beacon it once was. Traci took a risk and walked away from the comfort of corporate life to embark on a soul-searching journey – one that would answer her questions, validate her instincts, and change her life forever. 7:01 – Traci 101 Traci grew up in West Palm Beach, Fla. She moved to Chicago and knew she always wanted to work in television. She stayed in Chicago for 25 years and helped start HGTV. After 20 years with HGTV, she woke up one morning and wondered what else was out there. Liz is the founder of Sseko Designs, an ethical fashion brand that works to educate and empower women. She is also the newly named chief growth officer of Noonday Collection. My guest this week is David Pruitt, a first-generation college graduate from UNC-Greensboro. As a senior leader in the U.S Bicycle industry, he served on the board of “People for Bikes,” a national organization with 1.3 million members that works to make riding a bicycle in America safer, easier to access, and more fun. A licensed CPA, David started his business career in an entry-level accounting position before advancing to first CFO, then CEO, of Performance Bike, for a time the largest cycling retailer in the United States. He is an avid reader, a happily married husband for more than 30 years, and a proud father of two successful children. He currently resides in Chapel Hill. 5:24 – David 101 He was raised in Greensboro with two older brothers. David had a dysfunctional, chaotic upbringing. His mother had mental health issues and his father was mentally and physically abusive. 20:12 – Breaking cycles 30% of children who are abused end up abusing their children David knew he was never going to put his hands on his kids. There was never a doubt, given his experience with abuse. 22:16 – 10 traumatic events The CDC identified 10 traumatic events that can happen to a child before the age of 17. If enough of those events happen, it can dramatically change the quality of the rest of their life. Some include: physical/verbal/sexual abuse, neglect, domestic violence on mother, alcoholic parent, etc. 29:30 – Easy and difficult writing Writing is not a cathartic experience. There are tough things in his book, but it has a good ending. 42:32 – Forgiveness David used his faith to help him forgive his father before his death. 45:00 – Missing the mother-son connection David never had a connection with his mother. My podcast celebrated its 6th birthday at the end of September, and I'm blown away by how far I've come and how far this show and you, the listener, have come. This week's show is episode 320, so let's jump into my thoughts on influencers and what it means to influence people. 3:03 – Influencers I loathe the term influencer. If someone calls me that, I will immediately reject that. That suggests I have more influence than people you know, but that's not true. Everybody listening today has influence. 4:10 – Sidewalks When I was 8 years old, I wanted sidewalks in my neighborhood. I went to the town council and demanded sidewalks. It took 2.5 years of letter writing and speaking, but I got the sidewalks. 6:34 – Rethinking your influence My goal is to get you to rethink what it means to influence people on social media. Whether you have five followers of 5 million, think about how you can practically use social media for good. I promised myself I would not add to the hate on social media. 8:24 – Children and grandchildren When you post on social media, ask yourself: Would I be OK with my children, grandchildren or great grandchildren seeing or reading this? 9:31 – My mom's journals My mom died when I was a senior in high school. My dad gave me her journals, and it has made a huge impact on me. 10:36 – If my kid posted this … Ask yourself about your social media posts: Is this something I'd be OK with my children posting when they're older? 11:03 – Encouraging others The third question I ask is: Does this content encourage or uplift, make people laugh or smile, bring joy to others, educate or connect people? 12:48 – Changing opinions I don't post about politics, because people's opinions aren't changed on Facebook. Jane has hosted programs on cable channels and private satellite broadcasts, covering nearly every subject, from healthcare to food to finance to religion. Jane grew up in a rural town in Minnesota and moved to New York City, where she felt embraced by the city and its people. She is a contributing author for The Magnolia Journal, Artifact Uprising, Darling Magazine, HERE Magazine, and Procter & Gamble. Liz's upcoming book on building havens is represented by Punchline Agency. 4:41 – Liz 101 Liz loves 3 dimensional creative experiences and is a full-time freelancer. She drives a van, is very tall and her kids have a turtle. Despite her different interests, she could never shake the desire that she wanted to be a writer. All Things Money - Answering Your Financial Questions with My Husband, John! | EP. 310

Today's show is an extremely requested episode. My husband, John, is a financial advisor and is here to answer all your money questions. Many of you have emailed and DMed me asking for this episode, so let's jump into it. 3:11 – Why take financial advice from John? John is a financial advisor and owns a media company, Third Wheel Media. He migrated from journalism to interviewing financial advisors. He decided to do the job himself. 5:45 – John's financial lessons Both of John's grandfathers were good with money but in different ways. One grandfather was good at earning money by selling candy for a living. He was also a good investor. His other grandfather was good at not spending money. He didn't make much money but he was a good saver and sent his kids to college. 8:39 – John's first house John bought his first house at age 25 and put 20% down. 11:20 – Question: How to budget on one income and make decisions jointly? This is more of a marriage question. All of the money that comes into the household is joint money, no matter who earned it. With second marriages, spouses often maintain separate financial lives. 19:36 – Question: Do we have an allowance? Yes, we each have our own spending money each month. And yes, we have a monthly budget. If you have a blow money spending category, you can buy whatever you want. 27:05 – Question: Should kids get an allowance, tithe, etc.? Our son is 6½, so he doesn't understand as much about money. Our daughter, who's older, understands more. We have kids' piggy banks – spend (80%), share (10%) and save (10%). 35:15 – Question: What is a good dollar amount for retirement? No offense, but this is a pointless question because it's impossible to answer. John has clients who retired with $175,000 in retirement savings. Most people would say that's not enough, but they don't spend much and are happy that way. John also has clients who aren't getting much of a Social Security benefit. They have almost $2 million in savings, but they spend a lot each month. 42:38 – Question: Where do I start when living paycheck to paycheck? People in this boat are often so stressed that they can't get out of their own way. There is a path out of debt, but it won't happen overnight. Define your priorities (rent, car payment, food, etc.) and increase income. 52:12 – Question: Are you comfortable talking about money with family and friends? We've made money this thing you can't talk about in our culture, but it isn't like that in other cultures. It drives John crazy that families don't talk about money, and children don't know the financial situation of their aging parents. Why can't we have these generational conversations about money? 56:01 – Question: Should I do a 529 or IRA for kids? Do a 529 for kids. A Roth IRA is not the best use of this money. 58:14 – Question: How do you save for a vacation when there are other priorities? You don't have to spend a bunch of money on a vacation. It can be simple. If money is that tight, the vacation probably isn't a priority. 1:04:08 – Question: What to do if my finances feel out of control? If you're in financial despair, you don't have a good command of your numbers. Find out what you spend on groceries and miscellaneous expenses. Spend a couple months and look at every expense. My guest today is Marcy Gregg, an abstract oil painter, author, speaker and survivor. Her life changed forever in 1990 at age 30 after a serious complication arose during the birth of her third child, leaving her in a coma with little hope to survive. Marcy miraculously woke up days later, only to believe she was 17 years old. Much of her memory was gone and she was left with the daunting task of rebuilding her identity in a life she did not recognize. Marcy was determined to make the most of her second chance at life and eventually found herself picking up a paintbrush. In sharing her life story on various stages and in living rooms across the nation, Marcy seeks to inspire others by finding beauty in the abstract, both in life and art. Her book, Blank Canvas, was published on May 24. 4:28 – Marcy 101 She is a professional artist, mother of three, grandmother of four and one on the way. Marcy lives in Charlotte, and her paintings are on display across the country. 5:15 – In a coma After Marcy had her third baby, she fell into a coma. Doctors told her husband that if she woke up, she likely wouldn't be the same. A passion for color and oil painting grew within her. My guest today is Paige Allen, a pastor, a speaker and writer. She's passionate about opening doors for others to have “a-ha” moments in scripture. Paige is known for her sometimes-hilarious yet vulnerable storytelling that disarms in order for truth to settle in hearts. Paige grew up as a pastor's kid, and although she thought she would try and stay away from vocational ministry, she's now served on the same church staff wearing multiple hats for more than 17 years. Currently, Paige serves as executive pastor at Church on the Rock in Lubbock, Texas, where she preaches often, leads the staff, gives oversight to global missions and The New Legacy Home for Women. She also leads a thriving women's ministry and co-hosts the Bloom Talks podcast, where unknown but remarkable women tell their stories of God's faithfulness. 5:03 – Paige 101 She lives in the Texas panhandle with her husband and two daughters, 12 and 10. My guest today is Cody Foster, the co-founder of Advisors Excel in Topeka, Kan. His company has a mission of helping good financial advisors become great business owners so they can help people enjoy an amazing retirement. Since they were founded in 2005, they've grown from three founders to about 800 employees, making them one of the largest employers in Topeka. They've been named a great place to work for four years. 5:10 – Cody 101 Advisors Excel sits between financial advisors and insurance and investment companies they access products through. Cody dreamed of working with a professional sports team. But in college, his grandma declared bankruptcy on a business. He wanted to learn more about money and financial services. 7:20 – How does Advisors Excel work? It's the simplest business model, but hard to explain. Advisors Excel represents about 50 different insurance companies, like Nationwide, etc. Financial advisors go through Cody's company to work with the insurance companies. 13:53 – Healthy paranoia Cody has a healthy paranoia, knowing that he has to keep growing and developing. As the leader, you have to be the most committed to your personal growth and development. 20:50 – Lessons learned about money If you inherit money but haven't done things to develop as a person, you will struggle. You need to grow into a person who can handle major responsibilities. Cody didn't grow up with a lot of money, so he is able to be content no matter how much money he has. 26:44 – Being generous Financially successful people tend to be more generous. Instead of talking about being generous, show people how to do it. 38:47 – Employees and strangers Cody read a book about Andrew Carnegie, who did not treat his workers well but was very generous with strangers. The host of All The Small Things podcast and the co-founder of Remember Who Made Them, Venetia uses her platforms to challenge fashion brands who are costing the earth and calls out retailers on their unethical practices in the fashion supply chain. “Fashion brands are so willing to talk about organic cotton and to talk about their latest recycled range. There are two things that fashion brands refuse to commit to — the first is paying their garment makers a fair living wage, and the second is a drastic reduction in overall output. But these are the two things that would actually, truly change the industry.” -Venetia Here's a question I've posed on Instagram: Is it OK to buy fast fashion secondhand? I was watching Venetia's YouTube channel recently, and in one video, she talks about this question. She says: “I think it's worth us interrogating – but I'm not sure it's worth us giving ourselves a hard time about.” So, back to that question – is it OK to buy secondhand fast fashion? Out of curiosity, I did a poll on Instagram the other day, and 96% of the respondents said *Yes, it's ok to buy it*, with only 4% saying *No it's not OK*. And how can we creatively share intense information about the unfair fashion industry to welcome more people into the conversation?
