Welcome to episode 166. In this episode I have the great oportunity to reconnect with Jonathan Ruiz. We last chatted back in episode 127 where he shared his journey from 400 to 200 pounds through bariatric surgery and completing the Gulf Coast 70.3. That was incredible. In this episode we talk about his most recent adventure. An Ultra Triathlon. Wow! This is a terrific story. Enjoy. Coach Todd www.nolimitstriathlon.com

Visit their bike store in Hyderabad or shop online by using the link www.thebikeaffair.com For many of us, completing an Ironman is a big thing. The thought of swimming for 3.8km followed by 180km cycling and then running a marathon of 42.2km is hard enough for a lot of us. Not so for today's guest Prashant Hipparagi. Prashant is an ultra triathlete who recently completed Brasil DecaTri which is a race involving completing 10 Ironman distances in one go covering 38km swimming, 1800km cycling and 422km of running in 11 days. Yes, that is right. 10 Ironman distances at one go. In this episode Prashant shares about his journey in triathlon so far including the experience of completing the Brasil DecaTri. It is amazing how he was able to complete such a hard ultra event without any crew. He was depending on a combination of homemade nutrition made out of peanuts and local hydration drink mix he carried with him to complete such an arduous event. His simplicity and no nonsense approach comes through in this interaction as well. This past summer, Luke Sweet completed his first double iron-distance triathlon (known as a Double Anvil) in just over 30 hours. For those unfamiliar with triathlon, the double anvil consists of a 4.8 mile swim, a 224 mile bike, and a 52 mile run; all in 36 hours or less. Luke possesses a humble tenacity like nobody I've ever met before. This was truly an inspiring conversation and I'm excited to share it with you. Conheça a história do Alê. Espero que você curta.

Abhejali Bernardova (44, Czech Republic) of the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team completed an extreme ultra-triathlon from Dover to Prague, during which she covered a total of 1111 km across the 3 disciplines: 34 km swimming, 895 km cycling, 182 km running. It took her 7 days, 12 hours and 5 minutes. She started on Monday September 13 2021 at 3am from Dover. In very challenging conditions, with the wind at force 5, she swam the English Channel in 15 hours and 33 minutes. The only other successful crossing on the same day was a 5-person relay team. It was her last chance to swim this year and the swim had already been postponed a few times. Restrictions did not allow her to stay in France, so she had to take a detour back to Dover and then take a ferry to France. She then cycled from Calais to her hometown of Cheb, near the Czech/German border. The cycling leg, which took her 4 days, was approximately 900 kilometres through France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. She arrived in Cheb on Saturday afternoon, then ran 182km to Prague, arriving on Monday afternoon. Her daily average was 220km cycling and 2 marathons running. The Czech athlete successfully completed her first English Channel swim 10 years ago. In 2018 she became the 1st Czech, the 10th person in the world, 4th woman and the 1st person from a landlocked country to complete the Oceans Seven*, seven difficult long-distance swims around the world. She is also the only Czech holder of the Triple Crown** of long-distance swimming. With her ultra-triathlon she aims to connect people and places and inspire others to break down and cross barriers in their own lives. If she can go from the UK to the Czech Republic under her own steam, then we really are closer to each other than we realise, we just put up unnecessary walls between us. She also tries to inspire others to overcome their own limits and show that these limits are often self-created. (*) Oceans Seven include: English Channel, Gibraltrar Strait, Tsugaru Strait, Catalina Channel, Molokai Channel, North Channel, Cook Strait – all solo, non-wetsuit. See also: https://www.openwaterpedia.com/wiki/Oceans_Seven (**) The Triple Crown includes: English Channel, Catalina Channel, around Manhattan. https://www.openwaterpedia.com/wiki/Triple_Crown_of_Open_Water_Swimming New episodes of the Tough Girl Podcast go live every Tuesday at 7am UK time - Hit the subscribe button so you don't miss out. Show notes Her love for swimming in the ocean Wanting to share her adventures Her childhood and growing up in the Czech Republic Learning to swim in Russia Not coming from a sports family Hearing about the English Channel Starting meditation at 18 years old with Sri Chinmoy Wanting to know herself better Wanting to step outside her comfort zone Going to university and getting into running Going after longer and longer distances Running a marathon doing laps “I can do more” Swimming the English Channel in 2011 Getting into flow while swimming Completing the Oceans 7 Challenge in 2018 Coping with the cold water Taking cold showers in the morning Being scared by sharks Beautiful moments while swimming Advice for going further with swimming Tips and advice for recovery Sleeping for 7 hrs a night Being a Peace Ultra Runner The Peace Run Loving the 24hrs races When it gets difficult on the 24hr races Deciding on a new challenge The logistical challenges of putting the plan together Being dependant on the weather for the swim The training involved to get physically ready for the challenge How her body has changed from 34 to 44 Needing more time to recover Finishing in Prague “I can do it - I have already done it” Use your imagination even while training to tell yourself you can do it Why you should DREAM BIG!!! You probably know Dede Griesbauer by her voice, if you've ever tuned into an IRONMAN Live race broadcast. A professional triathlete (multi-time Ironman champion and top-10 Kona finisher), she provides expert commentary on the IM broadcasts. In 2020, she added a new discipline to her repertoire: she raced Ultraman Florida, winning the women's title and setting a race record of 22:48:31. On the podcast today, we dive deep into Ultraman with Dede!

This episode is PURE MOTIVATION! If you're in a lull or struggling to get your lovely butt off the couch: tune in. On today's show I'm talking to Melissa Urie: ultra endurance athlete, Ironman + Uberman woman and an embodiment of will power & mental strength. And it was so much fun recording! Thank you, Mel! You rock. Race distances so you get a feel for what we’re talking about: Sprint/Beginner’s triathlon: 750 m swim - 20 km bike - 5 km run Long-distance/Ironman: 3.8 km swim - 180 km bike - 42.2 km run Uberman = the world's most challenging Ultra Triathlon: 33 km (21 mile) swim - 644 km (400 mile) bike - 217 km (135 mile) run Swim in Catalina Channel then ride from LA to Furnace Creek and run Furnace Creek to Death Valley (top of Mt. Today’s guest is Melissa Urie aka Ranga Mel. Mel was a guest for episode 46 back in October where she told us about racing the Epic 5. Today we get to hear about how Mel was the first woman in history to finish Uberman. The Uberman website describes it as “ the world's most challenging Ultra Triathlon. The 556 mile course goes from the Mists of Avalon to the Snows of Mount Whitney. Starting on Catalina Island, participants swim 21 miles in the open Pacific Ocean to the shores of Palos Verdes. The 400 mile bike route leaves the city of Angels and climbs 20,000 vertical feet before descending to Badwater basin, at 200 feet below sea level, the lowest point in North America. From Badwater, athletes run 135 miles through Death Valley before ascending 13,000 feet to the trailhead @ Mt Whitney, the highest peak in the Continental United States.” You are going to LOVE this episode, so sit back and enjoy. Melissa has completed the Epic 5 in Hawaii, 3 Ultraman triathlons, and is now the 1st female to have ever completed the UberMan, which she did in October - she also broke the swim record and smashed the previous course record by approximately 31 hours! During this episode we learn more about the details from the challenge, the high points, the low points, the support of crew members, what the finish was like and how she is getting back to ‘normal life’. We have been following Melissa’s journey since February 2019, when Melissa did a Facebook Live for the Tough Girl Tribe - this was then turned into a Tough Girl Podcast EXTRA episode. The 400 mile bike route leaves the city of Angels and climbs 20,000 vertical feet before descending to Badwater basin, at 200 feet below sea level, the lowest point in North America. From Badwater, athletes run 135 miles through Death Valley before ascending 13,000 feet to the trailhead @ Mt Whitney, the highest peak in the Continental United States. On this episode of Le Run Down, I'm excited to share a conversation with Ultra Triathlon couple, Katherine and Kevin Becker. Their journey in fitness began a little later than most, but it’s been incredibly eventful. They started with team sprint triathlon, but now they've completed multiple Ironmans, 4 marathon world majors, crossed the grand canyon, and hold the Guinness World Record for most completed Ultraman races by a married couple. Their goal has always been to race for fun and fitness, and they've shown that anything is possible, if you set an objective and put your mind to it. My guest this week is Chuy Amaya from Austin, Texas. By all standards, Chuy is a normal guy. He's 32-years-old, works a full-time job, has his Masters Degree, etc. What sets him apart? It isn't just the fact that Chuy is an ultra-endurance fanatic. His favorite event? Well, he's currently training for the Deca Ironman in Mexico taking place this October. Yep. That's right. A full Iron-distance race (2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, 26.2 mile run) for 10 days in a row. What possesses someone to do this? How does he train? What advice does he share for others who want to dip their toe in the Ultra Distance world? All this and more on this episode of the "I Could Never Do That" podcast. O Daniel venceu o Quintuple Iron Man em outubro do ano passado. Extreme endurance adventurer Sean Conway is the first and only man in history to cycle, swim and run the length of Britain. In 2015, Sean cycled 3,350 miles from Lulworth Cove to Scarborough on a bamboo bike. At Scarborough, Sean swapped his bike for running shoes and took 1.5 million steps to Brighton, where he did his final leg - a 390,000 stroke swim, across two intensive weeks, all the way back to where he started. The self-supported, 4000+ mile, continuous Ultra Triathlon was filmed by the Discovery Chanel and propelled Sean into the record books. In this episode of the podcast Sean explains how he became an ‘adventurer’, how he remains focussed when competing, why he thinks high risk goals lead to success, how to make sure failure isn’t an option and why accountability and proving the naysayers wrong fuels his motivation. This is a memorable and entertaining episode and Sean’s message is powerful and provides a recipe for positive attitude and coping with setbacks. .
