In this episode, I give you a quick whistlestop tour of what worked and what didn't for me in 2023, and lay out my plans for the business in 2024. I discuss the journey of this podcast, The Recognized Authority, which has shown steady growth across 152 episodes. I also touch on my shift to live streaming many of the episodes. I've found that live streaming offsets my tendency towards perfectionism and encourages proactive content creation. However, I plan to improve the promotion of these live streams well in advance in the coming year. On the social media front, I talk about missing my 2023 goal of reaching 6,000 LinkedIn followers. Falling short of this target has prompted me to refine my content strategy for LinkedIn in 2024. I aim to engage more effectively with the platform's algorithm while scaling back my efforts on other social media platforms. Regarding my email list, I recently increased the frequency of my emails, a move that initially led to a spike in unsubscribes but eventually resulted in greater engagement. I intend to continue this experiment for another 2-3 months to better gauge its long-term effectiveness. I also reflect on my experiments in 2022 with group masterminds and 2023 in my Authority Accelerator program and one-on-one coaching. These experiences have led me to retool my Authority Accelerator program as I've discovered that interviewing not only makes content creation more manageable but also allows me to use the first interview as a foundation for a content roadmap. This interview format is conducive to podcasting, which is an effective tool for lead generation. I'm also considering adding a community offering at some point in 2024, depending on finding the ideal pricing and value for the target audience. Tune in for a behind-the-scenes perspective on my journey. Want to chat? Book a call with me.

We all want more recognition for our expertise. But the path to becoming a recognized authority is not always clear. In this episode, I reflect openly on an oversight in my own authority-building journey: not focusing enough on the pain points and problems that my audience and ideal clients are experiencing. This is a topic we addressed in my conversation with Steven Lewis in the previous episode, and it's something I'm exploring a bit further in today's episode. My takeaway from last week is that I often jump too quickly to solutions before fully exploring the frustrations and challenges of the problem or situation. This is coming from a good place with intentions of helping, but it may be doing my audience a huge disservice, limiting my ability to motivate and compel them to take important-not-urgent actions that can profoundly impact your career and life. Walking through my experience, I share how consistently creating and publishing content opened opportunities, expanded my business, and freed up more of my time. But starting this content engine isn't always easy or an obvious priority. That's why I want to explore this further and paint a fuller picture, examining the consequences you face when not building authority through content. My goal isn't to exaggerate or exacerbate the pain, but explore the limitations and trade-offs you encounter without this critical but never urgent step. My hope is a peek behind the scenes of my thinking motivates and encourages you to start your authority-building journey. I believe the effort is so worth it, but also want to validate that it takes real commitment and perseverance from you. If you need accountability and support, join my intensive Authority Building Bootcamp this November running from Monday 6th for 4 weeks. Let's make progress together before the end of the year and holiday season kicks in, so that we're starting the new year on a strong footing. Do you feel like just another face in the crowd? In today's crowded marketplace blending in can spell disaster if you want to attract ideal clients and increase your impact. You need to learn how to differentiate yourself and become the only choice. In this episode of The Recognized Authority, host Alastair McDermott interviews branding strategist Gerry Foster on how consultants, coaches and thought leaders can stand out from the competition through strategic branding. They discuss the importance of finding your uniqueness in order to increase your impact. Gerry explains that you need to identify and promote how you are different and better than other options your potential clients may be considering. He discusses the concept of the "blue ocean" - finding untapped market spaces where you can offer fresh and original solutions. This allows you to differentiate yourself rather than compete directly with established players. Alastair and Gerry also explore the sequence of brand, market and sell. Branding is about shaping perceptions, while marketing helps you get found. This lays the groundwork for selling your services or products. They dispel the myth that branding is just logos and emphasize the need for a distinctive brand identity. Gerry shares strategies for making intangible services tangible. This includes developing a unique "secret sauce" system to deliver concrete outcomes for clients. He advises positioning yourself as a brand that offers exclusive value, not just another generic service provider. With the exception of a few notable anomalies in metal history, a band's second (i.e., follow-up) album is almost always more ambitious (and usually a ginormous quantum leap forward) than their debut album in nearly every way imaginable. And because we can't help but “poke the bear” every now and again, we thought “Why not pick two of the most incredibly important follow-up albums in thrash metal history to duke it out in the coliseum?” From 1984, it's METALLICA with RIDE THE LIGHTNING. From 1986, it's MEGADETH with PEACE SELLS…BUT WHO'S BUYING? And just to complexicate this confusing conundrum even further: only one of the members of one of these bands has actually been in BOLTH bands AND has songwriting credits on BOLTH albums. (“To be fair”, ‘tis certainly a vexing quandary to say the least.) Get ready to “work out your traps and use your sports words” because with these two beasts in the ring doing battle, it's bound to get intense. Time to “sacrifice some fruit loops” as things get “downright biblical” in the world of classic metal as we pit two of the finest sophomore albums in thrash metal history by two of the finest bands in thrash metal history (who actually share thrash metal history together) against each other! Prepare to discover the most sensually appealing culinary wonder ever documented in the annals of breakfast food debauchery and JOIN US as we go head-to-head, Death Match style, with METALLICA's 1984 release RIDE THE LIGHTNING vs MEGADETH'S 1986 release PEACE SELLS…BUT WHO'S BUYING? She is the author of the book titled, The First, The Few, and The Only: How Women of Color Can Redefine Power in Corporate America. She is also a Women and Public Policy Program Leader in Practice at the Harvard Kennedy School. In today's episode, Deepa talks about her unique background, including her surroundings and the lessons she learned. She shares how growing up as a woman of color, there were no role models given the dominance of males in her industry. Deepa is a strong supporter of women of color, helping them to navigate the corporate structures to achieve their personal levels of success. Deepa also shares the story of the founding of her company, nFormation and discusses key principles from her new book. Key Takeaways The lack of role models for women of color can prevent or stall meaningful career development. Personal worth and value must come from something intrinsic, not from a job. Episode 4 is here! Featuring Oliver Wood of The Wood Brothers. He chatted with us about everything from the Chupacabra, Swiss cheese, and hotel shampoo, to Area 51, his Top 5 Spotify, and ways to stay off the grid. Keep your ears peeled! –––––––––––––––––––– The Wood Brothers, formed in the mid-2000’s, is an American folk band consisting of brothers Chris and Oliver Wood, as well as multi-instrumentalist Jano Rix. They originally signed to Blue Note Records where they recorded their first album, Ways Not to Lose. Now for their sixth outing, the Wood Brothers took a looser approach to recording, working slowly at a number of different studios and experimenting a bit more with their formula. The resulting One Drop of Truth was released in early 2018.
Let’s talk about living books. Now, I can almost hear you saying, “Living books? Again? We talk about them all the time!” And that just proves my point. In a Charlotte Mason home school we spend a lot of time talking about living books: what they are, how to spot them, where to find them, […] 5 Ways NOT to Use a Living Book originally appeared on Simply Charlotte Mason.

Monday, January 29, 2018. Education Leadership and Beyond: Surviving & Thriving with Andrew Marotta. 10 Ways Not to Suck with my guest: entrepreneur, author, adhd/add expert: Peter Shankman. Podcast #34 - aired Saturday 1/27/18. 9am live or on the app anytime country 107.7 WDLC, 106.9 WYNC, Wall Radio, & Pocono 96.7. I had the privilege of talking with Peter Shankman this week on Ed Leadership & Beyond. Peter is an awesome guy who is doing great things in NYC and beyond. Here is a short bio from his website: Peter Shankman is a spectacular example of what happens when you merge the power of pure creativity with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and a dose of adventure, and make it work to your advantage. An author, entrepreneur and corporate keynote speaker, this “worldwide connector” is recognized worldwide for radically new ways of thinking about customer service, social media, PR, marketing, advertising, and ADHD. Show #34's concept was built around a speech Peter gave in 2017 called 10 Ways Not to Suck. He was frustrated about his flight experience on the way to the conference and changed his whole speech that morning. Want to NOT suck at what you do? Here's Peter's advice: 1. Do your HW...whatever you are involved in--guests, work, projects...do you hw and learn something about the person. I share the story of when I lost my Dad. It was my first game back officiating since his funeral services. I was shaking the hands of the coaches as I do each and every game. I got to the last assistant coach who pulled me in close and said " I am sorry to hear about the loss of your Father." Wow: that caught me off guard. It was like a punch to the face. I remember that moment with such clarity. It was such a small gesture, but an important one for me. I was impressed that "coach did his HW!" 2. Listen to your audience: hear them, listen to them, and give them what they ask for. This is not just a business concept, and can be used by all leaders. 3. Brand everything you do: In the technological world we live in, attach your name to everything you do. Peter shares the story of a cool video he made that has almost 2 million views on youtube, yet he failed to put his name to it. A golden opportunity missed yet an important lesson learned. 4. Be transparent--be honest: so simple, yet in our complex world, this virtue seems to be disappearing. With all that we see in gov't and the celebrity world, we don't see much of this. Peter is a real example of this. He says reach out to me--I can help you, and that is exactly what he did here. We connected about my book, his book, and bam: he was on the podcast. Transparent and up front. Great work Peter! 5. Relevant: make your work matter. There is so much garbage out there. Make your work, your life relevant. 6. Brevity: The great Hall of Fame Port Jervis HS teacher Kevin Birmingham told me when speaking in public: be like a comet: beautiful, memorable, and brief! 7. Top of mind: how can I help you? When you have this question in the forefront of your brain, you truly will be looking to help others in a meaningful way. I share the story of trying to help my wife in the kitchen. She's cooking, cleaning, and handling all that comes her way, and I USED to just barge in there, get in her way, and think I was helping her. Ahhh, no! She trained me in the ways of the force and now I ask her (and many others) those magic words: How Can I Help You? 8. Differentiate yourself: How do you stand out among the rest? 9. Understand yourself--what works for you: again a simple concept, yet very, very important. I guess we learn this more with age. As I write this blog at (9:14pm on a school night), I know I have to get to bed. 4:45am comes early and if I am going to have any chance at a good workout in the am, I need my rest. 10. Have a support team, a mastermind group: Who is in your kitchen cabinet? Book recommendation: Faster Than Normal, Peter Shankman Quote: “People with means give opportunities to people they trust. Be someone people trust” -Peter Shankman Next week's guest is: Dr. Marc Frankel, podiatrist, Milford, PA. Go out and change the world for the better. Peter is very open in our conversation about adhd & add. We spoke openly about eating, sleeping, alcohol, and making time for the important things in life. Peter is a living example of knowing oneself and doing the things that work for you. He also grew up about a mile away from me on the rock: Staten Island!
On this week's group chat, we discuss yet another new parenting philosophy, confess our childhood misdeeds on our Friday speed round, shout out some stuff we like on the Roundabout Roundup, look forward to upcoming pop culture offerings, and do some shameless self-promotion. Here's your road map to the episode: 03:00 "Potted-Plant Parenting" — It should come as no surprise that teens want their parents to be available but not intrusive. A New York Times article considers that a good thing, but some of us aren't so sure. 18:50 Speed Round: What Did You Get in Trouble for as a Kid? — It's hard to believe since we're such upstanding citizens now, but in our day we got in trouble for selling stuff in the schoolyard and staying out to all hours. Getting in trouble for sass? Not so surprising. 22:31 Parenting Roundabout Roundup — Terri one-ups Catherine's bluetooth shower fan with a bluetooth toothbrush; Catherine likes an article about Why You Should Avoid Avoiding Holiday Weight Gain; and Nicole appreciates the ease of giveaways using Rafflecopter. 25:55 Round 2 Special — In a bonus edition of their Tuesday Round 2 entertainment-themed episodes, Catherine and Terri look ahead to the pop culture coming their way in 2017. (Mentioned: Jimmy Fallon's opening Emmys number from 2010; may he come up with something as wonderful for the Golden Globes.) 33:04 Shameless Self-Promotion — Terri wrote a post for Friendship Circle on "8 Ways NOT to Find a Winter Coat for Your Child with Sensory Issues"; Nicole has an infographic on her Inclusive Class blog about "10 Tips for Grading Students with Disabilities Graphic"; and Catherine invites everybody to her About Family Fitness Facebook page. Thanks as always to Jon Morin for our fun in-and-out music. If you're reading this somewhere without hyperlinks, come to http://parentingroundabout.com for the full recap experience.
