Author Edward Ashton (MICKEY7, ANTIMATTER BLUES) joins the show to reflect on having his work adapted by director Bong Joon-Ho into the 2025 film “Mickey 17.” In episode 346, Luke Elliott & James Bailey add to their “Creative Conversations” series where they discuss adaptations previously covered with someone directly involved in their creation. Topics include the origins of the Mickey7, why Ed would never use a teleporter, how his cancer research and scientific background influences his writing, the one thing Bong Joon-Ho told him to take from the set, his interpretation of Mickey's final vision in the film, and which books of his he could see being adapted in the future. This week, Daniel and Gavin dissect Bong Joon Ho's Mickey 17, using Pierre Bourdieu's theory of cultural capital to examine who gets to be seen as an “auteur” in the public imagination — and who doesn't. We explore how race, class, and symbolic capital shape legitimacy in the film world, questioning why specific creators are celebrated as geniuses while others are sidelined, regardless of the quality of their work.Through Bourdieu's lens, we look at the cinematic “field” as a battleground, where recognition isn't just about talent — it's about access to networks, education, prestige, and whiteness as an unspoken default. Mickey 17 becomes a springboard for unpacking how cultural power is produced and maintained in the West and how directors like Bong Joon Ho disrupt those norms — even while subtly reabsorbed into them.

A wet fart from famed director Bong Joon Ho? Luke & Corrye lean "yes." Though Robert Pattinson sparkles as the titular character, much of this novel-based film didn't quite land for the Chumps. Luke explains his small beef with author Edward Ashton (a personal experience!) while Corrye batters the film with a variety of frustrations. PLUS: an ode to Gene Hackman, one of our favorite thespians.
On this episode of The Movie Podcast, Daniel and Anthony review and discuss Bong Joon Ho's MICKEY 17 starring Robert Pattinson. Adapted from the novel Mickey7 by Edward Ashton, Mickey (Pattinson) is as an "expendable" - a disposable crew member on a space mission, selected for dangerous tasks because he can be renewed if his body dies, with his memories largely intact. The conversation dives deep into the nuances of the original narrative, examining the complexities of the protagonist and the unique blend of humor and existential crisis that defines the series. Following this insightful discussion, Joe takes the spotlight to share exciting details about the newest installment in the Robert Langdon series from the renowned author Dan Brown. He elaborates on the plot, potential themes, and the implications of this new adventure for the beloved character, sparking a lively debate among the group about the evolution of Langdon's character throughout the series. As the episode progresses, Joe reveals some intriguing news about an upcoming film titled Mickey 17, which stars the talented Robert Pattinson. He explains that this film is based on a novel called Mickey7, written by Edward Ashton, and provides a brief overview of the book's premise, highlighting its unique take on science fiction and the moral dilemmas faced by its characters. The guys express their excitement about the film adaptation, discussing what they hope to see on screen and how it might differ from the original text. In a thrilling turn of events, Cody then uncovers an updated list of Stephen King adaptations set to make their debut on both large and small screens over the next year. The group delves into the various projects, analyzing which stories they are most eager to see brought to life and considering how these adaptations might resonate with both long-time fans of King's work and new audiences. They reflect on past adaptations, sharing their thoughts on what has worked well and what has fallen short in translating King's iconic storytelling to film and television. As the conversation unfolds, the enthusiasm in the room is palpable, with each member contributing their insights and opinions, creating a rich tapestry of discussion around literature and its adaptations. However, just as the episode reaches a crescendo of excitement and anticipation, it ends abruptly, leaving listeners on the edge of their seats, eager for the next installment.Official Website: https://www.comesnaturallypodcast.comOfficial Merchandise: https://shop.spreadshirt.com/comes-naturally-podcast/iTunes: http://tinyurl.com/kqkgackFacebook: http://tinyurl.com/myovgm8Tumblr: http://tinyurl.com/m7a6mg9Twitter: @ComesNaturalPodYouTube: http://tiny.cc/5snxpy

Today is Monday, April 17 Meet WV author Edward Ashton, whose novel “Mickey7” is being made into a major motion picture…the WV SBDC helps a sneaker business get out on the right foot…and three WV towns make the 50 best small towns in the South list…on today's daily304. #1 – From MOUNTAINEER MEDIA – Taylor Books hosts “Sip, Sign and Chat” with West Virginia author Edward Ashton. The event takes place at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 22 at the Charleston bookstore. Ashton is the author of the novels “Antimatter Blues,” “Mickey7” (now a Warner Bros. motion picture starring Robert Pattinson), “Three Days in April” and “The End of Ordinary.” Our Sip, Sign and Chat series will consist of coffee talk with the author followed by a book signing. The WV SBDC has provided assistance to new businesses like Classic Kickz, a sneaker shop in Morgantown. The store carries a variety of limited edition shoes and most sought after apparel from some of the top brands. WV SBDC Business Coach Frank Goldsborough Jr. was able to help store owner Tyler McElroy with repairs to the storefront by helping him secure a ARPA grant from the City of Morgantown. After that the two became more acquainted, Frank assisted Tyler with his book keeping and finances. “He's been a lifesaver to us,” McElroy said. “After our first meeting I mentioned other issues we were having like taxes, running the business better, keeping up with the books and money coming in and out. Frank told me about his background in accounting and we hit it off.” “One of my favorite things is learning about all the different industries I can be a part of as a coach,” Goldsborough said. “Classic Kickz is a very niche market and Tyler does very well in it.” Read more: https://wvsbdc.com/classic-kickz-takes-a-step-in-the-right-direction-with-sbdc-partnership/ #3 – From SOUTHERN LIVING – What do Harpers Ferry, Lewisburg, and Shepherdstown have in common? They've all been named to the list of 50 best small towns in the South for 2023. One of West Virginia's oldest towns, Shepherdstown is a prime location to see the splendor John Denver waxed poetic about in “Take Me Home, Country Roads.” Stunning views of the surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains and the meandering Potomac River play backdrop to centuries-old Victorian houses and an art-filled downtown. A lively local culinary scene, shows at the Greenbrier Valley Theatre (West Virginia's state professional theater), and frequent music festivals are just a few reasons to plan a trip to Lewisburg, a town steeped in American history. Visit in the fall to see the forests papering themselves in reds and golds. The Appalachian Trail runs directly through the main thoroughfare of Harpers Ferry on the West Virginia-Maryland-Virginia borders. The area is designated as a national historical park thanks to its mountain and river views galore and its role in sparking the Civil War. Jake and Ron welcome back to the podcast Edward Ashton, author of the just-released Antimatter Blues, which is a sequel to Mickey 7 and published by St. Martin's Press. As most of you already know, Mickey 7 is being developed into a movie directed by Oscar-winning director of Parasite, Bong Joon-ho. He is also writing the screenplay. The title role is being portrayed by the highly versatile actor Robert Pattinson. The movie's release date is scheduled for March, 2024. The movie itself will be called Mickey 17. Mickey 7 was one of our favorite sci-fi books of last year. Last year, NPR called it one of the best books of 2022. Mickey 7 received high praise from two of our favorite authors. Jonathan Mayberry called it "Mind-bending and powerful. This is why we read science fiction." Jason Pargin called it "Unique and thought-provoking." We were so excited to chat with Edward again and to learn about the creative process for Antimatter Blues. Definitely a worthy sequel to Mickey 7! Happy New Year! Since Jake is currently on holiday the iOtians decided to replay one of their most downloaded episodes of 2022, their interview with Edward Ashton, Author of Mickey 7. This episode marked a turning point for the Wrath of the iOtians podcast. Due to an incredibly high number of downloads it increased the podcast's audience and visibility. It was also just a fun interview to do!Note: This episode has been remixed to increase clarity and vocal presence. The iOtians have a lot planned for Season 3 starting in January 2023! It kicks off with 2 Bram Stoker Award winning authors. Interview with Edward Ashton, author of Mickey 7 (April 2022) The sequel, Antimatter Blues, is now available! Details on http://www.edwardashton.com/Mickey 17, the film adaptation of Mickey 7 will be in theaters on March 29, 2024Directed by Bong Joon Ho, Screenplay by Bong Joon Ho and starring Robert Pattinson. Check out the official trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KCvK270F_IE&ab_channel=WarnerBros.PicturesIf you follow movie news and development then you've already heard of the sci-fi novel Mickey7. In 2020, Plan B, Brad Pitt's production company, acquired the film rights to the tale. Earlier this year, it was announced that Oscar-winning director Bong Joon Ho selected Mickey7 to be his next project, with Robert Pattinson attached to star in the titular role. And this all happened before the novel was even published. Mickey7 Edward Ashton's first science-fiction novel, and it was published by St. Martin's Press in February 2022.Edward's background researching cancer and teaching grad-school quantum physics may lead would-be readers to suspect that Mickey7 is abstract and esoteric. Instead, the novel has fast-paced action with life-and-death consequences. Yes, you'll learn about science (often from Mickey7 himself), but it's always in the context of story. Ideas of immortality and identity are also explored in thought-provoking ways. We had the great fortune to talk with Edward Ashton about Mickey7 in detail. We reached him at his cabin in upstate New York, where he lives with his wife and daughters.Edward Ashtonhttp://www.edwardashton.com/Twitter: @edwardashtonwritingThe Wrath of the iOtiansEmail: thewrathoftheiotians@gmail.comInstagram: thewrathoftheiotiansTwitter: @OfiOtiansWebsite: https://thewrathoftheiotians.buzzsprout.com/MusicLand Of The Me-me by Aleksandar Dimitrijevic (TONO)Licensed under the NEO Sounds Music License AgreementAuld Lang SyneElise SolbergLicensed under the Soundstripe Music License Agreement
Plans for the week ahead lead off a relatively laid back episode, where we discuss Edward Ashton's thrilling and existential sci-fi adventure.
This week makes our minds gush as we talk about She-Hulk, The Watcher, The Sopranos, Torgo rediscovers Lego, Lower Decks, House of the Dragon, Tarantino movies, the end of G4 (again), the Neeson Gun, a DnD Doc, Mickey7, Robbie Coltrane, King's Fairy Tale, the Meta Quest Pro VR, a Figment film, Nintendo Pictures, Upgrade, and Black Samurai. It's time for a GeekShock!
Edward Ashton, the author of Mickey7, walked into a rabbit hole of questions from us as we dissected the book. Ashton discusses how he came up with the idea, the scientific details behind many underlying layers in the novel, and why being "expendable" is necessary as it preserves more valuable people on the planet yet comes with great sacrifice. In addition to going into details about the new planet, Niflheim, the colonization process, and creepers -- Ashton spends the time going over the intricacies that made it a must-read (can not put it down) book. Additionally, we discuss Ashton's call when he found out that his adaptation was going into pre-production, the cast announcements, including Robert Pattinson playing Mickey7, and the one thing he spoke to Bong Joon-ho (director of the adaptation/film) that had to remain in the movie. Host: Monica Gleberman (@Monica1236) Guest Host: Marianna Randazzo Editor: Miranda Currier Social Media Graphic: Jojo -- Synopsis: Mickey7 is an Expendable: a disposable employee on a human expedition sent to colonize the ice world Niflheim. Whenever a mission is too dangerous—even suicidal—the crew turns to Mickey. After one iteration dies, a new body is regenerated with most of his memories intact. FK261! Alustame suvist ajarännakut ja liigume ajas 35 aastat tagasi ehk kinosuvesse 1987. Perioodi, mida meil võiks julgelt nimetada VHSi-ajastuks, sest “Kiskja”, “Beverly Hillsi võmm 2” või “Ameerika ninja” jõudsid meiemaile sageli juust selle meediumi vahendusel. Filmikägu uudistenurgas on omale koha leidnud Vin Diesel, kes iga nädal hõikab välja uue liituja “Fast X” projektiga. On ka muid teateid. Näiteks “Oceans 11” uus projekt koos Margot Robbiega või Bong Joon-ho järgmine film “Mickey7”. Kinodesse lendab sel nädalal kiirusel Mach10 Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, kes kutsub taas kõiki “ohutsooni”. “Top Gun: Maverick” on lõpuks kohal! If you follow movie news and development then you've already heard of the sci-fi novel Mickey7. Author Edward Ashton, has numerous short stories published on his web site, http://www.edwardashton.com/. He's also published in analog SF and the Broken Worlds science-fiction anthology. His first two novels, Three Days in April and The End of the Ordinary, were published by HarperCollins. Mickey7 is his first science-fiction novel, and was published by St. Martin's Press in February 2022. Edward's background researching cancer and teaching grad-school quantum physics may lead would-be readers to suspect that Mickey7 is abstract and esoteric. We reached him at his cabin in upstate New York, where he lives with his wife and daughters.Edward Ashtonhttp://www.edwardashton.com/Twitter: @edwardashtonwritingThe Wrath of the iOtiansEmail: thewrathoftheiotians@gmail.comInstagram: thewrathoftheiotiansTwitter: @OfiOtiansWebsite: https://thewrathoftheiotians.buzzsprout.com/MusicLand Of The Me-me by Aleksandar Dimitrijevic (TONO)Licensed under the NEO Sounds Music License AgreementThe Lowest DeepA supernatural horror fiction series.Listen on: Spotify
