Jake and Ron welcome legendary author Christopher Paolini!Even if you don't read genre fiction, you're likely to remember the story of the young man who at the age of nineteen became a New York Times bestselling author when his first book Eragonwas republished by Knopf in 2003, after a self-published debut and a grassroots marketing campaign the previous year. Paolini would go on to produce three more novels and a short story collection tied to his Inheritance Cycle, with another, Murtagh, due this coming November.Since 2002, Paolini has enthralled tens of millions of readers. And while the Inheritance Cycle is published as Young Adult fiction by Knopf, it is enjoyed by readers of all ages. This rabid fan base has earned him a citation in the Guinness Book of World Records as the youngest author of a bestselling series. In 2020 Tor published Paolini's first science fiction novel, To Sleep in a Sea of Stars, launching the Fractalverse series to much critical acclaim, including a GoodRead's Best Science Fiction Award for the year. A follow-up was published online in 2021 as Unity, and you can read it on fractal verse.net free of charge. The journey is interactive in a mode old people like us used to call hyper-fiction. Not content with publishing one novel in 2023, Paolini this month brings us Fractal Noise, a prequel novel written for adults that we dare say is of a philosophical bent. We mean this as the highest praise: Fractal Noise is thoughtful and thought-provoking, exploring themes of the nature of human suffering and its possible antidotes, loss and grief, and human endurance. That it does so with a gripping narrative suffused with an abiding sense of dread is a testament to Paolini's ever-growing skills as an author, and Fractal Noise is amongst our favorite novels of the iOtians's current interview season. We spoke with Paolini at his home in Montana and found him to be no less fascinating in person than he is on the page.Christopher Paolinihttps://www.paolini.net/Christopher Paolini Workshttps://www.paolini.net/works/Fractal Noise (2023)https://www.paolini.net/works/fractal-noise/https://www.tor.com/tag/fractal-noise/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/christopher_paolini/Twitter: https://twitter.com/paoliniThe Wrath of the iOtiansEmail: thewrathoftheiotians@gmail.comInstagram: thewrathoftheiotiansTwitter:  @OfiOtiansWebsite: https://thewrathoftheiotians.buzzsprout.com/MusicLand Of The Me-me by Aleksandar Dimitrijevic (TONO)Licensed under the NEO Sound

He is a veteran reporter on immigration, gangs, drug trafficking, the border. He is formerly a reporter with the L.A. Times, where he worked for 10 years. Before that, he made a living as a freelance writer residing in Mexico for a decade (1994-2004). His latest book, released in November, 2021, is The Least of Us: True Tales of America and Hope in the Time of Fentanyl and Meth. (The book is released in paperback in November, 2022.) In The Least of Us, Quinones chronicles the emergence of a drug-trafficking world producing massive supplies of synthetic drugs (fentanyl and meth) cheaper and deadlier than ever, marketing to the population of addicts created by the nation's opioid epidemic, as the backdrop to tales of Americans' quiet attempts to recover community through simple acts of helping the vulnerable. With The Least of Us, Quinones broke the story of how the methamphetamine now produced in Mexico has covered the U.S. and is creating widespread and rapid-onset symptoms of schizophrenia, becoming in the process a major driver in the country's the homeless problem. In January 2022, The Least of Us was nominated for a National Book Critics Circle (NBCC) award for Best Nonfiction Book of 2021. The Least of Us follows his landmark Dreamland: The True Tale of America's Opiate Epidemic (Bloomsbury, 2015), which ignited awareness of the epidemic that has cost the United States hundreds of thousands of lives and become deadliest drug scourge in the nation's history. Dreamland won a National Book Critics Circle award for the Best Nonfiction Book of 2015. It was also selected as one of the Best Books of 2015 by Amazon.com, the Daily Beast, Buzzfeed, Seattle Times, Boston Globe, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Entertainment Weekly, Audible, and in the Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg Business by Nobel economics laureate, Prof. Angus Deaton, of Princeton University. In 2021, GQ Magazine selected Dreamland as one of the “50 Best Books of Literary Journalism of the 21 st Century” Dreamland was selected as one the Best 10 True-Crime Books of all time based on lists, surveys, and ratings of more than 90 million Goodread.com readers. In 2019, Slate.com selected Dreamland as one of the 50 best nonfiction books of the last 25 years. For Dreamland, Quinones has testified before the U.S. Senate's Health Committee, numerous professional conferences of judges, doctors, librarians, hospital administrators and at more than two-dozen town hall meetings in small towns across the country. A Young Adult version of Dreamland – for 7 th through 12 th graders -- was released in July of 2019. His first two books grew from his 10 years living and working as a freelance writer in Mexico (1994-2004).   True Tales From Another Mexico: The Lynch Mob, the Popsicle Kings, Chalino and the Bronx was released in 2001. It is a cult classic of a book from Mexico's vital margins – stories of drag queens and Oaxacan Indian basketball players, popsicle makers and telenovela stars, migrants, farm workers, a narcosaint, a slain drug balladeer, a slum boss, and a doomed tough guy.   In 2007, he came out with Antonio's Gun and Delfino's Dream: True Tales of Mexican Migration. In it, Quinones narrates the saga of the Henry Ford of Velvet Painting, and of how an opera scene emerged in Tijuana, and how a Zacatecan taco empire formed in Chicago. He tells the tale of the Tomato King, of a high-school soccer season in Kansas, and of Mexican corruption in a small L.A. County town. Threading through the book are three tales of Delfino Juarez, a modern Mexican Huck Finn. Quinones ends the collection in a chapter called "Leaving Mexico" with his harrowing tangle with the Narco-Mennonites of Chihuahua.  Dagoberto Gilb, reviewing Antonio's Gun in the San Francisco Chronicle, called him “the most original writer on Mexico and the border.”   Contact him at www.samquinones.com or samquinones7@yahoo.com.   About Your Host, Jim Hunt: Welcome to the “Building Amazing Cities and Towns Podcast” … The podcast for Mayors, Council Members, Managers, Staff and anyone who is interested in building an Amazing City.   Your host is Jim Hunt, the author of “Bottom Line Green, How American Cities are Saving the Planet and Money Too” and his latest book, “The Amazing City - 7 Steps to Creating an Amazing City”   Jim is also the former President of the National League of Cities, 27 year Mayor, Council Member and 2006 Municipal Leader of the Year by American City and County Magazine.   Today, Jim speaks to 1000's of local government officials each year in the US and abroad.   Jim also consults with businesses that are bringing technology and innovation to local government.   Amazing City Resources:   Buy Jim's Popular Books: ·       The Amazing City: 7 Steps to Creating an Amazing City:   https://www.amazingcities.org/product-page/the-amazing-city-7-steps-to-creating-an-amazing-city   ·       Bottom Line Green: How America's Cities and Saving the Planet (And Money Too)  https://www.amazingcities.org/product-page/bottom-line-green-how-america-s-cities-are-saving-the-planet-and-money-too   FREE White Paper: ·       “10 Steps to Revitalize Your Downtown”  www.AmazingCities.org/10-Steps   Hire Jim to Speak at Your Next Event: ·       Tell us about your event and see if dates are available at www.AmazingCities.org/Speaking   Hire Jim to Consult with Your City or Town: ·       Discover more details at https://www.amazingcities.org/consulting   Discuss Your Business Opportunity/Product to Help Amazing Cities: ·       Complete the form at https://www.amazingcities.org/business-development   A Special Thanks to Bearing Advisors for the support of this podcast:  www.BearingAdvisors.Net

The Least of Us About Sam Quinones Sam Quinones  is a Los Angeles-based freelance journalist and author of four books of narrative nonfiction. His latest book is The Least of Us: True Tales of America and Hope in the Time of Fentanyl and Meth. In The Least of Us (published October 2021), Quinones chronicles the emergence of a drug-trafficking world producing massive supplies of dope cheaper and deadlier than ever, marketing to the population of addicts created by the nation’s opioid epidemic, as the backdrop to tales of Americans' quiet attempts to recover community through simple acts of helping the vulnerable. The Least of Us follows his landmark Dreamland: The True Tale of America’s Opiate Epidemic (Bloomsbury, 2015), which ignited awareness of the epidemic that has cost the United States hundreds of thousands of lives, and become deadliest drug scourge in the nation's history. Dreamland won a National Book Critics Circle award for the Best Nonfiction Book of 2015. It was also selected as one of the Best Books of 2015 by Amazon.com, Slate.com, the Daily Beast, Buzzfeed, Seattle Times, Boston Globe, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Entertainment Weekly, Audible, and in the Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg Business by Nobel economics laureate, Prof. Angus Deaton, of Princeton University. In 2019, Dreamland was selected as one the Best 10 True-Crime Books of all time based on lists, surveys, and ratings of more than 90 million Goodread readers.A Young Adult version of Dreamland was released in July of 2019. His first two highly acclaimed books grew from his 10 years living and working as a freelance writer in Mexico (1994-2004). In 2007, he came out with Antonio’s Gun and Delfino’s Dream: True Tales of Mexican Migration. In it, Quinones narrates the saga of the Henry Ford of Velvet Painting, and of how an opera scene emerged in Tijuana, and how a Zacatecan taco empire formed in Chicago. He tells the tale of the Tomato King, of a high-school soccer season in Kansas, and of Mexican corruption in a small LA County town. Threading through the book are three tales of a modern Mexican Huck Finn. Quinones ends the collection in a chapter called “Leaving Mexico” with his harrowing tangle with the Narco-Mennonites of Chihuahua. Sam Quinones is formerly a reporter with the L.A. Times, where he worked for 10 years (2004-2014).  He is a veteran reporter on immigration, gangs, drug trafficking, the border. Contact him at

Maximize Your Potential

What I mean by this is do you use words of encouragement such as:I am so proud of the effort you put in todayYou did a great jobIt may not have gone as you wanted but you learned somethingOr, are you making comments like this:You are so stupidYou will never be good at thatYou are not worthyMost people tend to slip into the second category without even thinking about the effect this is having on their self-esteem. We are harsh on our self but we would never dream of saying those things to other people, would we. Why is this? Why are we okay chastising our self when we would not be happy saying the same thing to someone else? Why do we value the feelings of other people more than we value our own?The “Golden rule” tells us to treat other people as we would want to be treated and this is a great thing to remember. My question to you is this: Why would you talk to yourself in a different way than you would want other people to talk to you? Before you start beating yourself up about this I want you to understand that this is a natural response because we have not been taught to value our self as we would value others. I cannot answer why this is the case and in reality, it doesn’t matter what has happened in the past, the important thing is that you start to change it today. I know that this has been my reality and I didn’t realize this until I was 50 years old! I always wanted to please others and would do so at my expense. What I didn’t know was the effect this was having on my confidence and self-esteem. On the surface I appeared confident and self-assured but underneath I was anything but these things. The effect of this was me not loving myself and living in a perpetual state on underlying unhappiness. A mentor of mine, John C. Maxwell, says that you cannot give what you don’t have. So, you may ask, what does this have to do with self-talk? Well, conventional thinking teaches us to love others and while this is true, we have to learn to love our self so that we can give love to other people. In other words, we need to experience the emotion and feelings so that when we do something to make other people feel the same it is a genuine action. I want you to think about the people you admire the most. What do they do that makes you admire them? If you were to meet them what would you say to them? Now the key is to transfer these feelings into how you behave and what you say to yourself. Here are some things that you can do every day to improve your confidence and self-esteem:Write down 3 things that you are grateful forWrite down one thing that you did today which you are proud ofWrite down one lesson that you learned todayWrite down 1-3 things that you said to other people that made you feel goodWrite down 1-3 things that other people said to you that made you feel goodRead 10 pages of a personal development bookI understand that this is going to feel a little strange to start with but I want you to persist. Once you do this for 21 days without missing one day it will become a habit and when this happens it will become natural. I don’t expect you to do all 6 to start with so start with one that speaks to you and master that before adding another. The important thing is that you make a positive change and keep that momentum going. When you do this, you will start to see a difference in your life and I promise you that other people will notice this too. Final message from Chris: Your current circumstance does not define who you are. You are special, you are loved, you are a unique being with unlimited potential so now is the time to rise up and maximize your potential every day.You can connect with me at:Website: www.Chris-J-Baker.comEmail: Chris@Chris-J-Baker.comFacebook Group: Developing Tomorrow's LeadersLinkedIn: Chris BakerInstagram: Chris J BakerTo purchase my book 10 Steps 2 Freedom from Amazon click here.To purchase my book Organizational Culture and Leadership click here

Returning to Charlie Holmberg's magical world of "The Paper Magician", Allen reviews the spin-off novel, "The Plastic Magician". Finding more in common with the new protagonist, Allen goes into detail about some of his life experiences and how important it is to relate to a lead character. The duo reflect on the necessity of the novel, how it functions as a spin-off, and, possibly, what it does better than the original three. They also continue the discussion on Goodread reviews and why "The Plastic Magician" seems to have better reception. Tune in every Tuesday for a new episode of The Broken Shelf. In this episode of Bibliophiles Anonymous, Denise and Jess discuss how they did for their goals in 2014 and make new ones for the new year. Denise did good on her GoodReads list, but failed at her other two challenges. In fact, not only did she make poor progress in completing her series that she started, she made the problem a lot worse. Jess missed her GoodReads goal by one book, which made her a little disgruntled. She also made very little progress in trying to read her bookshelf. New goals for 2015: Jess's GoodRead's goal will be 60 books again, and will also read 5 books from her bookshelf. Denise originally said that she would make her GoodRead's goal 75 books, however after recording, she decided to be crazy and up it to an even 100. She will also attempt to make progress in the series she has started (there are 33 to choose from). Have you set any goals for this year? Let us know!
