As an Air Force photographer, Stacy Pearsall traveled to over 41 countries, served in three combat tours, and earned a Bronze Star Medal—but when she returned home, that's when the real fight began. This week on Watching America, she discusses her military career and the challenges many veterans face when transitioning back to civilian life. She shares stories of these struggles in a new PBS documentary series “After Action” that details the journeys of 21 diverse veterans from across the country. “The military taught me everything I needed to know to thrive in service, but I wasn't given a handbook on how to become a civilian again. Simply hanging up my uniform did not mean I packed up years of conditioning, life-changing, sometimes traumatizing, experiences at the same time. I often meet with athletes who say that they struggle to stay motivated and parents who say that they have a hard time motivating their daughters.Usually this is in relation to something physical - like doing the workout, staying on track with habits. But it can also be the mental game practices and habits, specifically those we build in The Elite Competitor Program to build unshakeable confidence and belief in herself. And usually it also comes in an "off-season" period...when athletes don't have as much structure like practice/training to determine their day.What is Motivation?Motivation is a FEELING. Feelings come and go. We don't actually want our daughter to rely on motivation to do anything because we know that will power and motivation can only last so long.Motivation comes AFTER Action!When it comes down to it, we can't get anyone to do anything. The only person we can control is ourselves.We want to be careful because we can easily strain the relationship if we nag and "make" our daughters do things they don't want to do.The BEST is when it's driven by HER. A former AH-1W Cobra pilot, Dan flew prior to and including the initial invasion of Iraq in 2003. This episode is exciting for a couple of reasons. First, we got a chance to talk to one of the authors whose books was selected for the most recent iteration of the Commandant's Professional Reading Program. And second, we were joined by a ‘guest host' from one of the entities inside EDCOM that helps develop that Reading Program. Starting with the author: a third generation naval aviator, Dan Sheehan was a designated AH-1W Cobra gunship pilot, and did two tours in Iraq – first as a pilot, and then from the ground side as a forward air controller attached to Marine Corps SOCOM Det One. Dan's book "After Action" talks about those experiences, but it also talks about the many burdens brought home by those who see combat, especially those burdens that are not manifested physically. There are mental, moral, and emotional burdens - "After Action" discusses those, what the warfighting can do to seek help in shouldering, and perhaps more importantly, what military institutions need to do to be more active in helping their warfighters deal with that load. Dan had combat tours in Iraq, one as a Cobra attack helicopter pilot and one as a Forward Air Control for the Marine Special Operations Command. We discuss Dan's experiences in combat and some of the challenges he had putting the war behind him.

A quick and shorter episode this week compared to Episode 5 at least. So this week talking about after-action reviews. This is a review strategy that can help you become better and learn from your mistakes faster. It does take some practice to think of it and practice it after different actions. Basically as a whole what you want to be able to do is after any event ask yourself the following questions. What did I do good? What did I do wrong? What needs to be improved What can be learned from this event? This can help you see your strengths and your weaknesses. You can find out what you need to work on, while also helping you understand any lessons that this event could teach you. After action reviews are used by many of the most successful people as a means of understanding where their goals worked and where their goals failed. You can also use the after-action review as a means to improve your communication skills with your wife.

Uriarte joined the Marine Corps in 2006 as a 0351 Marine Assaultman and was stationed at Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. During Uriarte's four years of enlistment in the Corps, he served as SMAW Gunner, Team Leader, Squad Leader, .50Cal Gunner, Combat Photographer, and a Combat Artist. In 2010, Uriarte started the hit comic strip "Terminal Lance," which soon became the single most popular comic strip in the military. In 2016, Uriarte released the world's first graphic novel about Iraq, written and illustrated by an Iraq veteran, called "The White Donkey: Terminal Lance." The "White Donkey" was independently published in February 2016 and was a massive success.
