This was a difficult episode for me to record, one that signals one door closing yet finds another opening just as quickly. Much like finishing a great book, one that was long and all over the place with wild storylines and characters but was so much fun to read, there is a feeling of sadness that you have to say goodbye to that story and those characters for now. While that love for that book never truly leaves you, there is however, always room for another great book there on the shelf. I hope all of you know how much I appreciate all the hours you have given me each and every week for the last few years, the 200+ episodes, the adventures, the experiments, the successes and failures. Your support means more than words can say. Which is why I hope you'll understand why I'm making this decision and why I hope that at least some of you will join me on the next chapter of my podcasting adventures. What, you didn't think I was quitting podcasting all together now, did you? My new project is called 'Storyphoria' and it's a focus on books and movies, exploring the vast world of stories I'm journeying through on my quest to chase the high of that feeling of euphoria you get after enjoying a great story... hence, Storyphoria. You can find Storyphoria where-ever you get your podcasts or via this link: https://anchor.fm/storyphoria Thank you all once again and I hope to see you all over on Storyphoria soon! If you aren't familiar with it, over 2020 I created, wrote, narrated, and produced an original fiction podcast series here on the AIC Stories podcast called "Mystery Minnesota". It spanned 3 seasons and over 10 hours of content and it was a blast to create and share with you all. However, as AIC Stories has marched on, a few people have asked me about putting together a "Super Cut" episode in which I take ALL THREE SEASONS of Mystery Minnesota and combine them into one long episode to make it easier to binge. So, while AIC Stories is enjoying a brief summer vacation, I went to work editing, cutting out intro's/outros/shameless self promotion... everything that WASN'T the story itself. And now, I gift to you - The Mystery Minnesota Super Cut featuring all three seasons of my original fiction podcast experiment. Enjoy! ____________________ Mystery Minnesota is an original fiction podcast written, produced, and created by David Szweduik and is an AIC Stories production. In today's show I had the honour of interviewing Health Coach to busy mums Wendy Griffith. Wendy specialises in helping mums create healthier habits in their lives so they can have the same energy as their kids. I love her straight talking but friendly advice and came away with some great nuggets of information from this. We discussed not only how she got started, but she also shared amazing advice for you if you’re looking to start and grow your own business too. Highlights: {04:47} If you’re not in a position to give up your income to go after your dream (and let’s face it, who is?) then this is how Wendy worked around it {07:28} Who not to take advice from when you’re just starting out {19:50} Why taking care of ourselves is not 'me first' but 'me too' {24:54} How nothing exists inside our comfort zone {29:20} If you’re waiting for your knight in shining armour to come and save you, this bit's for you! Until he started "using", Kirk Charlton was a pretty good by his own account. But brushes with the law, including some Fed time landed him behind bars for over 20 years. Luckily, he began his career in prison, becoming acquainted with his gift as an artist. Only out on his own for a few months, Kirk has had to adapt to the fire hose of information and stimulation. Occasionally overwhelmed with social media, a colorful world and interaction with others, Kirk is navigating successfully but there are some exasperating days. The Art Inside Out program he developed a the Eastern Oregon Correctional Institute has helped a lot of AICs. But not in big, Ah-Ha type moments, in more gradual, therapeutic steps. Kirk got AICs into the program by bating them with art. Almost all AICs love art, as it an activity that lets them create and share. And for some, it becomes expression and a way to figure out why they are where they are. Kirk feels the big lesson with art is to teach sufficiency, an extremely valuable to AICs. Being sufficient is enough; expecting perfection and then feeling inadequate when it's not achieved leads to despair and depression for many. Anything that can keep an inmate from returning to prison benefits everyone - society, the taxpayers, the inmate's family, and the inmate - says Dan Bielenberg, founder of Business In A Box. A return guest, Dan was a hands-on home builder and designer before the housing downturn. He decided to work for the State for the job security and wound up being fascinated by reforming law offenders. He has seen change, even in the words used, toward the attitude of reformation. For one thing, the word "inmate" does not exist as of this year, replaced with the tag "adult in custody" - AIC. So his programs allow AICs to start a real business while institutionalized, the idea being they will have a way to make a living and be in charge of their own destiny upon being put back into society. Now four years old, the program has developed high standards; you're either serious or you're out, and the AICs know it. Anyone who runs with the prison gangs or does anything against the guidelines is out for at least a year. Being part of a special program is a privilege and Dan will not allow any individual AIC to bring down the standards.

This serial entrepreneur started at 19 buying into a nightclub. David Israel started a financial services company, Pawn Exchange, going from a single store to 44 stores with revenue exceeding $48 Million. An absolute freak set of circumstances left David spending $1.3 Million to defend himself from armed robbery in one of his own stores but still he ended up in prison. Not letting his entrepreneurial spirit be dampened, he noticed how popcorn was popular in the house and wrote a business plan for what turned out to be Planet Foods. The AICs were putting M&Ms, peanut butter and all kinds of add-ins to create the great taste and that's what David's first investors bought into. Later, a suggestion by his wife to send white truffle popcorn to Oprah really got the company the publicity that put them on the map. Now David strives to help other AICs and ex-felons get jobs and careers and convinces employers that this is a loyal and resilient labor force. At the Columbia River Correctional Institution in Portland, Oregon, USA, Dave and Anna - previous guest, Episode # 49 - interview three Adults in Custody who have found their "insights" through Anna's program. The Insight Alliance's philosophy is that we need to live from the inside/out, not the outside/in, that our very thinking determines our environment. Only then can real transformation occur. Eve (no last names), a transgender female, came to the realization that everything will be OK, no matter what. When Eve stop letting others' judgement become her judgement, life became settled and happier. Eve also learned from Anna not to worry so much about negative thoughts, that all thoughts come and go and they pass on their own. Angel has been in and out of prison many times; even served time with Dave! His turning point came in an accountability session, where he was called out by fellow AICs. Through his raging thought came his ah-ha moment, where he understood that THOUGHT created his experience of life not the world around him. He sees that but for this thinking he's OK. Damian is a veteran with PTSD and a retired paramedic. He should be used to dealing with high-stress situations, right? Well, he didn't in one situation and it landed him in prison. When he came to the realization that he created his own misery and understood the power of his thoughts, his mental pain started to subside. Or as Earl Nightengale said, "We become what we think about." Oregon ballot measures mandated Adults in Custondy (AICs) would work in an enterprise 40 hours a week to learn not only a trade or skill that could translate to a job, but also to learn a work ethic. Yes, the AICs in the program have a job, but this is definitely NOT a job for Barbara Cannard. Since 1995, she has guided the program, which must be self-sustaining, which means no money from the legislature. In addition, the program can't infringe on private enterprise with cheap labor. So she walks this fine line with every economy movement to keep the program successful, and she's doing it. Dan Bielenberg is creator, inventor, advocate and in charge of the Santiam Corrections Institute, Salem, Oregon's "Business In A Box" program. It's idea is to teach Adults in Custody (AICs) the skills to start, own and operate their own successful business when they get to the outside. He has built the program personally and pushed it up the ladder for acceptability in the system, strictly by his drive and integrity. Success has been sterling; not only have AICs started and kept businesses running upon release, some have come back to give money to the program to LOAN (not GIVE) money to AICs to assist them getting their business off the ground before they get out.
