Chapter 1What is HiroshimaIn his gripping book, "Hiroshima," John Hersey transports us into the lives of six individuals who survived the devastating atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima in 1945. Through Hersey's vivid narrative, the reader experiences the horrific moment and its aftermath from the intensely personal perspectives of a cross-section of residents, including a doctor, a clergyman, and a young woman. Hersey masterfully illustrates the immediate and the long-term human impact of nuclear warfare, highlighting not only the physical scars but also the enduring emotional and psychological trauma. Through these poignant stories, Hersey calls on the world to recognize the profound consequences of nuclear weapons and advocates for a future where such devices of mass destruction are abolished, embodied in the powerful plea, "No more." His narrative is a critical reminder of the human cost of war and a plea for peace and humanity in global politics.Chapter 2 Meet the Writer of HiroshimaJohn Hersey's "Hiroshima" employs a straightforward, journalistic style, which enhances the impact of the harrowing content. Rather than using overtly emotional language, Hersey opts for simplicity and clarity, allowing the stark realities of the atomic bomb's aftermath to resonate profoundly. He uses meticulous detail to humanize the victims, focusing on six survivors to anchor the narrative emotionally. Through these detailed personal stories, Hersey emphasizes the shared humanity and the immense suffering of the individuals, rather than abstract numbers. His restrained language serves as a stark contrast to the devastating circumstances described, compelling readers to engage deeply with the emotional and ethical implications of the event. This approach not only respects the dignity of the survivors but also effectively conveys the profound grief and enduring resilience within the community.Chapter 3 Deeper Understanding of HiroshimaThe bombing of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, not only marked a pivotal moment in World War II but also left a profound and lasting impact on global culture, literature, society, and ethics. This event has been a crucial and often revisited subject in various disciplines, influencing how people and nations consider war, diplomacy, ethical conduct in science, and the use of technology. LiteratureIn literature, Hiroshima has been a significant theme and subject, used to explore the dire consequences of modern warfare and its profound moral implications. Numerous works focus on human suffering, the moral dilemmas of war, and reflections on peace. Notable literary works include John Hersey's "Hiroshima," which is a journalistic masterpiece that details the lives of six survivors immediately following the bombing. This book is significant for its narrative style and its raw portrayal of human suffering, playing a critical role in shaping the American understanding of the atomic bombings. Japanese literature also carries many accounts and stories inspired by the events, with authors like Kenzaburo Oe (who wrote "Hiroshima Notes") exploring the implications on Japanese society and individual survivors. These literary explorations have helped to humanize the event, shaping how subsequent generations understand and grapple with the tragedy. Art and CultureIn art and culture, Hiroshima has provoked a wide array of responses, from films and paintings to music and photography. For instance, in cinema, both Japanese films like "Black Rain" and international productions like "Hiroshima Mon Amour" delve into the psychological and societal impacts of the bombing. Artists and filmmakers use these platforms to revisit trauma, often addressing the themes of memory and healing. The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and Museum itself serves as a cultural beacon, regularly hosting art exhibitions and...
God lytting!
We followed Bernard Fresson to 1959's Hiroshima Mon Amour (Alain Resnais) and though if you blink you'll miss him, we are thrilled that we ended up here.
When I first saw Hiroshima Mon Amour, this particular director went on the long list of names I wanted to cover. Alain Resnais is an internationally acclaimed film director, associated with both the Left Bank Group and the Nouvelle Vague. His preoccupation with the themes of time, memory and history, and his dazzling exploration of cinematographic technique, made him one of France's most distinctive and influential filmmakers for over 60 years, inspiring the likes of David Lynch & Michel Gondry. For this episode, previous guest and friend to the show Kate Blair (who joined me for Agnes Varda) returns for a delightful discussion on close to ten films of his, including a high recommendation of some of his short films as well at the end. Then I'm taking the rest of the month off to concentrate on prepping for the epic 1994 retrospective recording the first weekend of March. Thank you to Kate for a great conversation on a filmmaker I grew to love the more we talked about him. Follow Kate: https://letterboxd.com/selective_kate

On the 78th anniversary of the Atomic Bomb being dropped on Hiroshima, we look at some of the popular culture around that event. We start by discussing the 1980 song “Enola Gay,” by the 1980s British band Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark (OMD). We look at a brief history of the band, the success of the song both at the time and its historical legacy and a not-necessarily-obvious resonance it had in popular culture. After that, given the box office success of Christopher Nolan's “Oppenheimer,” we look some other films that take on the creation of the bomb in 1945. That includes the 1989 films “Day One” starring David Strathairn as Oppenheimer and “Fat Man and Little Boy,” starring Paul Newman and Dwight Schultz (who you may remember from “The A-Team” or “Star Trek: The Next Generation”) as Oppenheimer. We also briefly discuss the 1980 BBC mini-series “Oppenheimer” with Sam Waterston in the title role. We end with a brief mention of two other foreign language films related to the events: Alain Resnais' “Hiroshima Mon Amour” from 1959 and Akira Kurosawa's “Rhapsody in August” from 1991.

Mike and Nick delve into one of the enigmatic filmmakers of the French New Wave.Hiroshima Mon Amour (1959) and Last Year at Marienbad (1961) both use imaginative techniques to explore memory and reality. Find out what the duo has to say about these two films and the filmmaker.
It's Alicia's 4th pick: Hiroshima Mon Amour, the 1959 film directed by Alain Resnais. With ‘Hiroshima Mon Amour,' Resnais and screenwriter Marguerite Duras, explore the intersection where tragedy and trauma meet history and memory. The film was released on May 8, 1959 at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won the FIPRESCI International Critics' Prize. Among its other accolades was recognition by Cahiers du Cinéma on its list of the top 10 films of 1959, where it was ranked 2nd after Kenji Mizoguchi's ‘Ugetsu.' It opened in the United States in May of 1960 and went on to earn Marguerite Duras an Academy Award nomination for Best Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen. To give a sense of what was popular in the United States in the years ‘Hiroshima Mon Amour' was first released, then when it opened in the United States, the top grossing films in North America for 1959 and 1960 were Ben-Hur and Spartacus, respectively. Meanwhile, Ben-Hur was also the big winner at the Oscars for 1959, while The Apartment was the big winner for 1960. For our purposes, the film has never been in the top 10 of either the critics or directors polls done by Sight and Sound magazine to determine the greatest films ever made. It did, though, place, as a runner-up in both 1962 and 1972. Produced by Stereoactive Media --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/stereoactivemovieclub/message

Hallo zusammen!
We've arrived at the end of our third decade! And it's a busy, transformative period for the movies. The French New Wave has kicked into high gear; the Hays Code is finally in decline; and Alfred Hitchcock is in the middle of (arguably) the greatest run of films a director's ever had. But which one film from 1959 has best stood the test of time? Join Rachel Schaevitz and Aaron Keck as they discuss the year in cinema, the French New Wave, auteur theory, cross-dressing, Cary Grant impressions, "raising hell," Alain Resnais' strangely linear career arc, the emerging dominance of color film, how to commit petty property crime, and Abraham Lincoln's nose - and then we dig into the data and the numbers (and our expert panel votes) to identify the best picture of 1959. The nominees are The 400 Blows, Hiroshima Mon Amour, North By Northwest, Pickpocket, and Some Like It Hot. Who wins the Moonlight?

The sun is setting in Columbus, Indiana while a renowned architect remains comatose in a local hospital. His estranged son from South Korea, Jin, comes to visit and soon meets a kindred spirit, Casey, whose passion for architecture creates a safe haven for Jin to reexamine his fractured and turbulent relationship with his father, while also providing Casey with a newfound outlet to explore the possibility of life outside of Columbus. Kogonada’s 2017 directorial debut not only serves as a love-letter to architecture, but to the ties that we establish and familiarize ourselves with the landmarks, features, and connections that are found within any community. The most important part about these features is not the existence of them, but the room they create for memories, experiences, and a momentary sense of shared existence. @RealDonaldTrump: So interesting to see “Progressive” Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world (if they even have a functioning government at all), now loudly...... ....and viciously telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful Nation on earth, how our government is to be run. Why don't they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came. Then come back and show us how.... ....it is done. Lucy Fischer (English and Film Studies, University of Pittsburgh) joins Carsey-Wolf Center Director Patrice Petro for a post-screening discussion of Alain Resnais’ 1959 film Hiroshima Mon Amour. Fischer places the film, which features a screenplay by the French novelist Marguerite Duras, in the context of other French New Wave cinema; drawing attention in particular to the juxtaposition of images that are simultaneously fictional and documentary, and to the ways in which Duras’s influence is felt throughout the finished film. Fischer and Petro discuss the critical reaction to the film, as well as its meditation on the nature of memory as one of the first major post-WW II art films. Marissa Goldman and Justin Linville talk being Jewish (or what it's like being in a room full of Jews when they won't stop talking about being Jewish) and Alain Resnais's meditation on a shattered world in Hiroshima, mon amour.
After reconciling with the drudgery of the working world, Tom & Chris find themselves involved in an intense relationship between a French actress and a Japanese architect contemplating life, love and memories. After this brief tryst, they find themselves confronted with the horrors of what mankind is capable of.

In this episode, I talk about Alain Resnais's 1959 classic "Hiroshima Mon Amour." I combine excerpts from Marguerite Duras's screenplay for the film and portions of John Hersey's "Hiroshima" to explore how the film represents (or resists representing) horror and atrocity. I also look at how it portrays memory and grief. As Duras writes, "Impossible to talk about Hiroshima. All one can do is talk about the impossibility of talking about Hiroshima." Matthew Sweet reflects on the film music of the great French film composer Georges Delerue, who composed over 350 scores including much of the music for the films of François Truffaut - a composer once described as "the Mozart of cinema". The programme features scores from "Steel Magnolias"; "Hiroshima Mon Amour"; "Cartouche"; "Anne of The Thousand Days"; "Le Mépris"; "Day for Night"; "Tirez Sur Le Pianiste"; "Le Dernier Métro"; "Jules et Jim"; "Day of the Jackel"; "Something Wicked This Way Comes" and "Agnes of God".
It's the second part of our French New Wave crash course, as we look at the works of those in the rather more loosely defined Left Bank group - Agnes Varda, Alain Resnais, Jacques Demy and Chris Marker. Are they any better than the Cahiers du cinema gang? There's only one way to find out... Featuring discussions on Hiroshima Mon Amour, Last Year at Marienbad, Lola, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, Cleo from 5 to 7, and The Pier.
We place bets on Deadpool and discuss the forthcoming R-rated comic book movie explosion, plus we also talk Zoolander 2, When the Wind Blows, Dracula Untold, Condorman, The Detective, Turbo Kid, Sullivan's Travels, Hiroshima Mon Amour and American Crime Story.

Great White Terry Crews' of the Antarctic We peruse the Oscar nominations this week before poking the geriatric bear with a stick. Off the Shelf included Escape from 'Liberty' Cinema and Hiroshima Mon Amour before a tonal 180 in which the show truly earns its name with Montage of Heck and Deathgasm. Our film of the week is Iñárritu's The Revenant (we didn't have to spell check that name or anything).

What if Minions worked for Hitler? That's just how the show starts! Chris and Dylan break down the new family film, Minions, before going into what is a pretty good week for new releases. Three Criterion releases and some great horror and science fiction in It Follows and Ex Machina, respectively. Then Chris explains why you probably shouldn't bother watching Paul Blart Mall Cop 2, which also comes out this week. Though, I doubt you really needed a reason not to watch it. Dylan actually went and saw a movie you might be excited for: The Wolfpack. If you haven't been paying attention to the internet, you may not have known that San Diego Comic-Con was happening. Well don't worry because we've got your back. From trailers to some inevitable Star Wars news, one person destroys the other person's hopes for each individual piece of news. You can thank the Deadpool trailer for this week's opening track. Prepare for next week when Chris makes Dylan watch Ant-Man for your amusement.
