If you've ever tried strength training, you probably have also done some yoga. Many bodyweight exercises such as a plank and the boat pose originated from yoga. We began by introducing you to David Dietz, Owner of BBC Tavern and Grill and the recently opened Bar Reverie in the adjacent venue. Dietz, who has worked in the restaurant industry since a youth, opened BBC Tavern and Grill under the original concept Brandywine Brewing Company. As time went on, they essentially switched venues with Pizza by Elizabeth's and Dietz re-established his business as BBC Tavern and Grill as the new venue lacked space for brewing craft beers. Now, Dietz has extended his culinary pedigree with his French-based concept, Bar Reverie. Bar Reverie offers "a travel-inspired menu with a nod to French cuisine" and an extensive wine selection. Next, we caught up with the owner of Spotted Horse Provisions, Amanda Newman. Amanda's 'jam' is to focus on fresh ingredients from local farmers to create her sought-after sauces, preserves, and other delicious products. As a fourth-generation canner, Newman is well-versed in the versatility of creating scratch-made, sustainable foods for herself and her family. Now, she is bringing her family recipes (and delightful products) into our homes by selling them at local farmer's markets--and soon to the shelves of your favorite privately-owned grocery markets! Lastly, we uncorked the story behind Maryland's first black family-owned winery: Boyd Cru Wines. Jon'll and Matthew Boyd, who are the dynamic duo behind Boyd Cru Wines, enlightened us with their brand's origin story and what inspired them. Initially, the Boyd's discussed investing in a winery since the couple enjoyed visiting wineries in their free-time. So when the pandemic shut down the world, the positive-thinking couple recognized the additional time and opportunity it afforded them to pursue their goals--and Boyd Cru Wines was born. Since then they've won awards for their wines and are currently creating new vintages for all of you to enjoy!

Leaders report that the organization, which provides lifelong career support, is serving an unprecedented number of clients as past and current program participants seek new opportunities to support themselves and their families. Danny Castro, an Employment Specialist at The HOPE Program, spoke with Amanda Newman of the Economic Opportunities Program about his efforts to support clients to connect to work and make good employment decisions during the pandemic. The conversation has been edited for length to share some of Danny's key insights: Part I: Danny unpacks the day-to-day role of employment specialists and discusses his own journey from program participant to program staff. Part II: Danny describes the rapid increase in unemployment that clients are confronting and the HOPE Program's strategic response early in the pandemic. He also describes how the HOPE Program has responded to the murder of George Floyd and the national movement for racial justice. Artist Amanda Newman first came to our attention as the name at the bottom of a mural of Dujuan, the remarkable central figure of “In My Blood it Runs” during lockdown in Melbourne. When she completed a beautiful portrait of Cathy Freeman, our interest was piqued, and we called her for a chat about life as an artist in a time of Covid 19.

Happy St. Patrick's Day! We're back with Episode 6: Alumni Interview #1. In this episode, we are visiting with former SPC Texans about life after South Plains College. Our friends Matt Hamilton, Amanda Newman, and Rebecca Scott were able to sit down with us at the 2020 meeting of the Texas Society of Mammalogists in Junction, TX. They spoke with us about what they've been up to since leaving SPC, what the wish they would have known when they were still our students, and they share some advice for current Texans to consider as they're making that transition to their next institution. We love hearing from our former students and they share some pretty excellent tips for you all. Last year, Amanda Newman founded The Career Mum, a support group on Facebook for working parents. The idea for the group was born after Amanda took redundancy from Shell where she had enjoyed a successful IT career spanning more than 20 years. During that time she had four children, including twin boys. The Career Mum has just celebrated its first birthday and over the past 12 months the group has grown to more than 3,000 members across 60 countries. In this episode, Amanda, who's recently re-entered the corporate world at Microsoft, talks with Patricia about her career journey. What if you could turn your biggest defeat into your proudest moment? Entrepreneur and marketing maverick Grant Findlay-Shirras, a Richard Ivey School of Business graduate, was bootstrapped and deeply in debt when his fledgling startup, Parkbench.com, was suddenly threatened with a class-action lawsuit. Faced with litigation fees, betrayal, credit card disputes, and the loss of his founding partner, Grant needed to find a way to restore his business to profitability and salvage his reputation. His decision to persevere in his passion for helping small business owners succeed at marketing was pivotal, resulting in a remarkable career journey that has made Grant’s tech company, Parkbench.com, the #1 marketing platform for real estate professionals in North America. Drawing on the principles he learned from his Napolean Hill mentorship, Grant maintained an unwavering enthusiasm in his vision, tirelessly working to promote and share his unique marketing solution with other business owners.  Without investors to fund revenue growth, or staff to build a pipeline, Grant and his partner Amanda Newman grew Parkbench’s monthly revenue from $80K to over $500K. Within 3 months, their net profit rose 20%, proving the efficiency of their platform as a powerful lead and referral generator. Today, Grant continues to fulfill his vision of helping local business owners make more money and become a local leader. Entrepreneurs facing adversity will find encouragement and inspiration from Grant’s story of perseverance, determination and ultimate triumph. www.parkbench.com

My guest today is Amanda Newman. Amanda has served as Executive Director of Varsity Vocals for more than a decade, dedicating her career to promoting, encouraging, and providing unique performance opportunities for young musicians. Amanda has extensive experience producing educational and entertaining concerts, festivals, and competitions, as well as handling recorded music distribution and production.   In her capacity as Executive Director, Amanda has brokered high-profile licensing and development agreements, facilitating the use of the ICCA brand and related properties in the major motion picture Pitch Perfect as well as the development of Sing It On, a docu-series produced by CORE Media Group (American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance) that follows college a cappella groups on their journey through the ICCA tournament. Amanda serves as Co-Executive Producer on the series, which debuted in 2015 on the Pop Network.   Under Amanda’s leadership, the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA) tournament has more than tripled in size and currently features 3,500 singers from more than 300 competing groups each year. Amanda was also responsible for the creation and development of the International Championship of High School A Cappella (ICHSA) in 2006, a program that has significantly expanded since its inception and has helped foster a passion for a cappella in thousands of high school students.   And this year, Varsity Vocals created The Open, a competition that encourages singers to bring together groups of any age, experience or origin to form a cappella “dream teams.” By giving them a stage — and a cash prize of $25,000 to jump start their professional career, our programs encourage young people to sing together throughout their lives. The finals of the Open are being held September 23 at Carnegie Hall in NYC. Head to https://varsityvocals.com/events/ for tickets.   Since 2008, Amanda has been responsible the selection of tracks for the albums BOCA: Best of College A Cappella and BOHSA: Best of High School A Cappella, along with the compilation founder Deke Sharon. Amanda manages and oversees the coordination, production, licensing and distribution of both albums.   Amanda originally joined Varsity Vocals in 2003, as ICCA Midwest Producer. In college, Amanda was an ICCA competitor herself, serving as business manager and choreographer for the University of Illinois vocal jazz a cappella group, No Strings Attached. Under her leadership, the group earned second place and accolades for Outstanding Choreography at ICCA Midwest Semifinals, as well as their first track on BOCA.   Alright, without further ado, let’s welcome Amanda to the show.   Varsity Vocals - https://varsityvocals.com   Interested in a coaching session? -  http://recordingacappella.com/coaching   25% OFF Video Courses Pre-Order Sale -  http://recordingacappella.com/courses/   Win a $50 Amazon Gift Card by filling out my survey -  http://recordingacappella.com/survey   10 Ways to Improve your Acappella Recording - http://recordingacappella.com/podcast
