Pure Telecom, Ireland's high-speed broadband and telecoms provider, has announced new results from its Connected Lives 2025 survey, revealing almost a third (32%) of adults believe the thumbs-up emoji is passive aggressive. The survey of 1,001 adults in Ireland was conducted by Censuswide on behalf of Pure Telecom and sought to explore the various communication styles across different demographics. It found that while commonly used to signal acceptance or approval, the thumbs-up emoji has become a sign of rudeness for some. A significant 44% of adults under 25 believe it is passive aggressive, compared to just 12% of those aged 55 and over. The research examined how adults are communicating with each other in their daily lives. When asked what the most recent digital communication they had with someone in their personal life was, 36% of adults said it was via instant message, followed by 18% who had a voice call. Meanwhile, instant message - considered by many as a casual form of communicating - is the second-most cited form of communication for those who are in employment. Almost a quarter (23%) reported that their most recent work communication was via instant message, after email at 32%. With many instant messaging apps enabling users to see when their message has been read, and when the recipient has been online, the research shows that having a message left 'on read' - when a recipient reads a message but doesn't respond - makes 48% of adults anxious. Although, 41% admit they do this themselves, leaving the sender waiting a day or longer. Similarly, 47% of adults can't stand seeing their message being left unread when they know the recipient has been online. The research found that 36% of adults get nervous about posting a message in a group chat in case no one responds and 31% have even deleted messages they have sent to group chats after no one replied. Meanwhile, Pure Telecom's survey suggests that the text message - once viewed as a game-changer in how people communicate - could be on the way out for person-to-person interactions. One in 10 adults have never sent a text message, with this figure rising to one in four adults aged under 25. Paul Connell, CEO, Pure Telecom said: "Our research shows just how much meaning people now attach to even the smallest digital gestures. A simple thumbs-up can spark very different reactions, depending on the recipient's age. So, while a Baby Boomer might see it as a perfectly acceptable response to a message from one of their children, the recipient might spend the rest of the day wondering what their problem is. "Despite the nuances, digital communication is often the glue that keeps people together. From staying in touch with your other half throughout the day, to having a fantasy football group, these tools make it easier to stay close no matter the distance. Icons represent ideas that are bigger than themselves.Myths are stories that represent ideas that are bigger than themselves.Archetypes are symbols of recognizable patterns of behavior.Letters of the alphabet are symbols (graphemes) that represents sounds (phonemes,) just as notes on a sheet of music are symbols that represent sounds.A role model is a personal icon, an archetype that you have chosen to emulate.The human brain loves symbols and patterns. This is why we embrace icons, myths, and archetypes.When we recognize a pattern that has been stored in our subconscious, we call it intuition. When we hear a pattern that has been repeated too many times, we call it a predictable cliché.Icons, myths, and archetypes evolve with each new generation.I was born in the 12th year of the 18-year Baby Boom generation that began exactly 9 months and 10 minutes after the end of World War II.Marilyn Monroe was the iconic sex symbol. The Statue of Liberty, Yankee Stadium, Yellowstone, and Woodstock were America's iconic places. Rolls Royce, Cadillac, Corvette, Camaro and Mustang were iconic cars. Tetris, Pong, and Pac-Man were iconic video games.The mythic stories of Baby Boomers were mostly about combat. Sometimes we fought the Indians of the Old West. Sometimes we fought the Germans, or the Japanese. We fought the Establishment. We fought for justice. Or we fought just to stay alive.And we always won.Our definitive male archetype in these mythic stories was rugged, brave, independent, and honorable. John Wayne, Paul Newman, Clint Eastwood, Sean Connery.Baby Boomer female archetypes were smart, pretty, and strong; Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, Julie Andrews, Sophia Loren.Lots of movies ended with a wedding.These societal forces shaped the birth cohort known as the Baby Boomers.Gen-X was shaped by an entirely different set of icons, myths, and archetypes.Millennials had icons, myths, and archetypes that were all their own, as well.The Gen-Z cohort believes it is their responsibility to straighten out everything that the Boomers and X-ers screwed up.Gen-Alpha is determined to make their own decisions and decide for themselves what they want to do. They will be the vanguard of the next “Me” generation.Fortunately, there are elemental beliefs that bind us all together.It is upon those beliefs that successful customer-bonding ad campaigns are built. Openly name these beliefs and they lose their magic.If you claim to possess them, no one will believe you.EXAMPLES: Never claim to be honest. Just say something that only an honest person would say. Never claim to be a perfectionist. Just do something that only a perfectionist would do. Don't tell people that you are an author or a podcaster. Just give them a copy of your book. Invite them to be on your podcast.If you would win the hearts and minds of tomorrow's customers, this is what you must do:Imagine that you are standing face-to-face with three perfect customers and they are each looking into your eyes.The first one says, “Talk is cheap. Don't tell me what you believe. In a week dominated by the tragic assassination of Charlie Kirk, Cynthia Miller-Idriss' insights as the founding director of American University's Polarization and Extremism Research and Innovation Lab (PERIL) are particularly valuable. Her new book about what she identifies as “the new misogyny and the rise of violent extremism” is entitled Man Up. But its message might be summarized as Man Down in its attempt to temper the violent fringes of what she calls the manosphere. Miller-Idriss, one of America's leading researchers on violent extremism, argues that misogyny is the cause of today's troubling rise of political assassinations and mass shootings. Her research across seven countries reveals that hostile sexism ranks among the top three predictors of support for political violence. She traces a disturbing pipeline from seemingly innocuous self-help searches by lonely young men to radicalization by influencers who blend fitness advice with violent scapegoating of women and minorities. Miller-Idriss documents how 60% of mass shooters have histories of domestic violence, yet this connection rarely appears in media coverage when targets aren't explicitly gendered. Her work suggests that what she calls "the law enforcement arm of patriarchy" is crucial in preventing both left and right-wing political violence that has reached levels unseen since the 1970s. 1. Nathan outlined a generational roadmap, from Baby Boomers who value face-to-face connections, paper mail, and research-driven marketing—all the way to Gen Z, born between 1995 and 2009. Unlike previous generations, Gen Z grew up with technology at their fingertips. They're digital natives, expect user-friendly web interactions, and are famous for their short attention spans. Where Millennials (born 1980–1994) might be drawn to nostalgia and Instagram, Gen Z's heart belongs to TikTok, Snapchat, and real-time, less-curated microcontent. Slang to Improve Storytelling One playful, but important, aspect discussed was slang. Gen Z's ever-evolving language isn't just about new words; it's a reflection of community, humor, and relatability. Nathan led the TAP team through some current favorites (like “NPC,” and “no cap”), but did share a word of caution that slang is tricky territory for brands. Using slang can humanize a brand and make content pop, but if brands try too hard or use trends after their expiration date, they risk coming across as “cringe” (Gen Z's word, not ours). Wellness, Sustainability, and Social Responsibility Wellness isn't just a trend for Gen Z, it's a lifestyle. They're proactive about their mental and physical health, seeking out travel experiences that contribute to self-care and well-being. When looking for ways to engage Gen Z travelers there are lots of opportunities around trips like spa retreats, vegan experiences and sustainable stays. To connect with Gen Z, brands have to blend strategy with sincerity: adopt the right language, stay up to date with trends, and continuously center authenticity and purpose.
