What if a horror film could teach us something about faith? In Sinners, music becomes a spiritual force that’s powerful enough to bring people together, challenge oppression, and even pierce the veil between life and death. In this episode of Reel Theology: Where Film Meets Faith, Rev. Brittany and Rev. Trudy explore the film Sinners and uncover the powerful spiritual questions hidden beneath its supernatural story. It’s a haunting movie that weaves together music, history, theology, and horror into an unforgettable masterpiece. Set in 1930s Mississippi, the film navigates faith, family expectations, and the cultural power of music in a deeply segregated society. What begins as a story about a juke joint and blues music soon unfolds into a layered reflection on temptation, survival, oppression, and spiritual power. It’s a vampire film, but it’s also about so much more: ancestral memory, cultural resilience, and the sacred power of music. In this conversation, the female pastors explore themes like: The relationship between music and spirituality Why religious institutions sometimes fear artistic expression African American spiritual traditions and Hoodoo The history of Black music as resistance and survival Theological ideas like temptation, evil, and process theology How oppression shapes community, identity, and belonging Ultimately, the film points toward a powerful truth echoed in Christian faith: Even in the presence of evil, racism, and death — nothing can separate us from the love of God. Watch the conversation and join us as we ask: What can a supernatural film teach us about faith? Want to connect with others about this discussion? Join our Patreon community online! Sinners has been nominated for a record-breaking 16 Academy Award nominations: Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Original Screen Play, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, Best Visual Effects, Best Film Editing, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, Best Sound, and Achievement in Casting Sinners also received nominations for: BAFTA Awards, Critics’ Choice Movies Awards, Golden Globe Awards, Grammy Awards, and SAG Awards. A Note About Awards: While widely praised by critics for its storytelling, cinematography, and cultural depth, Sinners has also sparked conversation about which films receive major awards recognition and why.

The gang breaks down the escalating conflict with Iran after the U.S. launched Operation Epic Fury, a sweeping air and missile campaign targeting Iranian military infrastructure that reportedly killed Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and triggered retaliation across the region. With Iranian missile and drone attacks already underway and fears of broader escalation rising, they ask what the long term legacy of the operation could be for U.S. foreign policy and the Middle East. Then they turn to the BAFTA Awards controversy after a guest with Tourette syndrome involuntarily shouted a racial slur during a live presentation featuring actors Michael B. With ‘Scream 7’ finally out in cinemas around the world after various delays and controversies, we took the opportunity for this Out Takes to review this latest instalment in the 30+ year franchise and also explore its queer legacy across this incredibly popular and at times very camp slasher film series. From those iconic early days of high-profile scream queens being killed off in the opening scenes of the films to the enduring and contentious relationship between Sidney and Gail across the years, we celebrate the queer connection between the films and its fans along with the impact it’s gay creator Kevin Williamson has had on the horror genre. We then took the program in a different direction by taking a look at the new Netflix docuseries that has everyone talking about Tyra. ‘America's Next Top Model’ was created and hosted by supermodel Tyra Banks and began in 2006. It ran for 24 seasons and created spin offs around the world including here is Australia. The show featured up and coming models from across the USA vying to win the competition by competing in challenges, doing photo shoots and commercials and living in a shared house all while being filmed 24/7. The show was always controversial and with more contestants sharing their stories online it was only time before someone decided to take a look back at the people involved and what actually went on behind the scenes on this massively popular reality television juggernaut ‘Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model’ packed a lot in to its three episodes and we were keen to join the conversation on this series too. Finally, with Award’s season nearing the finish line before the Academy Awards in mid-March, we took the time to reflect on the recent BAFTA Awards and see if there are any clear favourites or surprises coming through in the recent winners and to also provide an update on our picks for Oscar glory in 2026. Nancy got her hair done yesterday and it’s darker than normal. Joey said that he would’ve never noticed a difference if she hadn’t mentioned it. Nancy brought her massage gun and tried to talk while Karly hit her with it. We talked about what happened at the BAFTA Awards when the man with Tourette’s Syndrome yelled out slurs while two Black actors were on stage. The live audience was warned in advance that something like that could happen, but TV viewers were not. The network chose to still air the moment, even though there was a 2-hour delay, leading to outrage from a lot of viewers. Baylen Dupree, a famous TikToker with Tourette's made a statement about how Tourette’s can make you say things that you normally never would. Hot Tea: An up-and-coming country singer is working on a new song that is a sequel to Dolly Parton’s Jolene. Dolly heard the song and loved it, so she is going to sing on it with the artist. Luke Combs says that he wants to lose weight but refuses to do it the “easy way” with GLP-1s. A man was arrested for posting a video of him pouring alcohol into an endangered hawk’s mouth. The Knoxville McKay’s is closing due to the property being sold. Nancy is sad because McKay’s always reminded her of her grandmother that would go there to get trashy romance novels. Joey said that his grandma used to keep her romance novels on the back of the toilet. The conversation went a little wild from there. Joey listened to a podcast yesterday and got annoyed when the podcaster used the word “nosh.” It apparently means “food” or “snack,” but he thinks it is unnecessary. He asked what other words people hated. Answers included “literally,” “due to the fact,” and pretty much all of Gen Alpha slang words. We called and left him a message on Friday, and then he actually called us back! We got to talk to him about our thoughts on the business. An influencer is under fire for posting a video telling people that they could wash their underwear in a hotel coffee maker. Now, she has posted a video claiming that her original post was a joke, but people aren’t so sure. Breaking News! Send a textA five-hour wait in A&E with my toddler stripped away any illusions I had about emergency care. Corridor beds, exhausted staff, and a doctor arguing for babies to be seen before a sixty-year-old with a rash this is the UK's reality, where private healthcare won't fast-track an emergency and winter air feels like a petri dish. I share what we saw, what it did to me as a mum, and the blunt lesson it pressed into my bones: invest in your health before the system makes choices for you. From there we move to power, strategy and public backlash. Eni Aluko's criticism of men fronting women's football raises a valid point, but targeting Ian Wright the sport's most visible ally torpedoed the message. We unpack what went wrong and extract career-proof lessons: name systems, not saviours; choose timing and venue with intent; and remember that you can be right and still lose if you sound reactive. Brand is strategy in public protect it, or the audience closes the door you're trying to open. Then the BAFTAs aired the N-word at two Black presenters, unbleeped, while other phrases were censored. Tourette's explains involuntary tics; broadcasters still owe safeguarding to their audience and guests. Representation without protection is not inclusion. We break down accountability, why “they handled it professionally” is a trap, and how institutions reveal their values in what they choose to edit or not. Finally, a listener faces major fibroid surgery while debating resignation. I make the case for recovery first, decisions second. Use protected sick leave, keep your legal and financial footing, and plan your next move from a healed place, not a depleted one. If you're navigating A&E chaos, media noise, or workplace dilemmas, this episode offers clarity, strategy and a steady hand.If this resonates, follow the show, share it with someone who needs a clear plan, and leave a review so others can find us. On the 290th episode of the MalloryBrosPodcast, the Bros start with a realization that all of you who have been watching us for weeks, months and even YEARS have collected so much information on them and seen so many moments that you're basically FAMILY. So Welcome back FAM, of course the Bros start with Recap of the weekend. Terrance reflects on a big weekend of watching Boxing with Ryan Garcia and Claressa Sheilds leading to back to back fight nights. Terrell reflects on a trip to Mike's with the family and preparing for another snowfall on the east coast. Some of you are watching this under SNOW as you read this. Anyway, the Bros start things off recaping Baby Keem's newest project "Ca$ino" that dropped this past weekend. Coming off a Grammy Nominated "The Melodic Blue" the Bros speak on how he delievered a solid proeject that fell a little short of their expectations on first listen. The also talk about how the project has improved on second listen, but people online seem to be split on Kendrick Lamar's feature on the project. This sparks a big conversation about Kendrick's influence on the public reception to the album and Terrance starts a conversation on how these days you really can't have an opinon. In his words, "you're either like it or SHUT UP". The Bros have a good CONTROLLED back and fourth about this but ultimately agree .. these days, giving even your OPINION takes some heavy considersation before letting fly. Next the Bros talk about the recent viral situation at the BAFTA Awards where a man with Tourettes syndrome yells the N Word in the middle of the ceremoney as Michael B Jordan and Delroy Lindo present the first award of the night. It was a horrible situation for eveeryone involved and thanks to the broadcast not being edited or cut like it COULD HAVE ... this set social media on fire. The Bros have a great conversation about the situation, educating each other on the seriousness of Tourettes Syndrome and understanding the "Coprolalia" that comes with it while also focusing on the DISRESPECT that CAN'T be overlooked because of the disability. This is what made this situation one out of a movie. It's a good convo! The Bros talk about the crazy situation in Mexico with the death of a Cartel leader and the mayhem happening throughout because of it. Next, the Bros discuss the recent passing of Eric Dane, a beloved actor from Grey's Anatomy and Euphoria who died from a short battle with ALS. The guys discuss this haunting disease and the speed of it and turn the conversation into one about showing up and making moments count. NETFLIX has announced that we're getting Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Paquiao 2 in Septmember this year. This comes a week after Floyd announced he was fighting Mike Tyson in Exhibition, and UN-retiring to purse a big event. The Bros discuss the Sport of Boxing and how it's seemlingly honoring the money more than the sport. The biggest question is are they wrong if we all are tuning in and it's keeping boxing exciting? Lastly, the bros talk about the late passing of Rondale Moore, a 25 year old NFL Wide Reciever who took his life this past week. This is the most important part of the podcast episode. The bros talk about mental health and it's importance, but more importantly they discuss how they deal with their OWN mental health in moments current and past and share a strategy you can use with you friends and family that might REALLY help. Terrance says "The most toxic part is keeping it in" and he's right. Of course the Bros finish with MOVIE ...SUGGESTION... OF ... THE WEEK! Another week with the Bros, see you next Tuesday! From there, the show dives into the viral chatter surrounding Janet Jackson, who was recently spotted at a New Edition concert with Mustafa Farrakhan Sr., sparking speculation about a budding relationship rooted in legacy and influence—though neither has confirmed the romance. Listeners also get an intimate look at Keke Palmer’s candid revelation that she’s “almost 100% sure” she’s asexual, a moment widely praised for its honesty and representation. Finally, things heat up as T.I. and 50 Cent’s ongoing feud reaches new heights: from Verzuz disagreements to diss tracks, social media jabs, and family members jumping into the fire, their clash has escalated into one of the most talked‑about beefs in hip‑hop right now. CW: This episode contains discussion of sexual assault and violence, including abuse of minors, in relation to recent revelations in the Jeffrey Epstein case. Listener discretion advised.   Some Big News Weeks led us to a slightly unwieldy conversation about several topics alongside Joel Schumacher's 1999 thriller 8mm. Written by Se7en scribe Andrew Keving Walker and boasting a rich ensemble cast including Nicolas Cage, Joaquin Phoenix, Catherine Keener, James Gandolfini, and Peter Stormare, the film explores elite depravity, snuff films, and the dark core of the American dream where desperate people's lives become a commodity. We first begin with some thoughts on recent events at the Berlin Film Festival and offer our definitive answer to the question on everyone's lips, "Is cinema political?" Then, we venture into Schumacher's film, a not-very-good grisly crime thriller with some resonant considerations about the brutalization of young women within the machinery of capital. Finally, we share some personal thoughts on the most recent releases from the Epstein Files, what they tell us about the nature of power in the world, and offer up an alternative movie title for those thinking more deeply about the case's reverberations. Get access to all of our premium episodes and bonus content by becoming a Hit Factory Patron for just $5/month.....Our theme song is "Mirror" by Chris Fish.
