Careful! This one is disturbing. In the early 2000s, women in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, lived in fear. Two different predators were stalking the city, leaving a trail of terror and death. While authorities were hunting for one killer, another, even more depraved murderer was operating completely under the radar. For ten years, Sean Vincent Gillis lived a chilling double life, murdering at least eight women, and the details of his crimes are beyond deranged. Even other serial killers are disturbed by him. He wasn't some dark, shadowy figure who stood out from the crowd. To all who knew him, he was just an ordinary guy, not the monster that was hiding in plain sight. Join Jen and Cam as they talk about "The Butcher of Baton Rouge: Sean Vincent Gillis." Be sure to stay and listen to the promo for Ghost Bites. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Jo Taylor, author of the book Margaret of Thibodaux. Jo is an obstreperous, retired ER Nurse who is likely an obstreperous writer too. She grew up with three stepmothers (not at the same time). She's lived on a boat and traced her genealogy back to the year 310 (maybe, probably, you know how genealogy is). She's been married for 33 years and all her hero characters are based on her husband, a hero in real life. Her first book, Postcards: Collected Poems and Short Stories, came out in July 2024. Margaret of Thibodaux, her first novel, released on March 18, 2025.   In Carole's book review, she stated: 14-year-old Margaret is not going to let her father erase the memory of her deceased mother by bringing another woman (certainly not a stepmother) into their home. Her best friend, Honey tries to convince her there's nothing to worry about. The new woman is a doctor after all, loved by the entire town. But for the past six years her mother has appeared at her feet and lulled her to sleep with her favorite lullaby. Margaret is convinced that couldn't possibly continue if another woman occupies the master bedroom.   Jo Taylor masters this coming-of-age story which takes place in Louisiana during the summer of 1974. You can almost feel the heat of the bayou as Margaret and her friends solve the problems of the world on the swings at the water's edge.   The local town medium is the one person Margaret feels can help her contact her mother to make sure their routine won't change. But no medium, or talk with friends, or even pleading with her father can assure her things will be fine. It isn't until she finds a poem at her mother's grave that she begins on a path to a solution she can live with.   This is a story you'll want to put on your TBR list.   Subscribe to Online for Authors to learn about more great books! https://www.youtube.com/@onlineforauthors?sub_confirmation=1   Join the Novels N Latte Book Club community to discuss this and other books with like-minded readers: https://www.facebook.com/groups/3576519880426290   You can follow Author Jo Taylor Website: https://www.jotaylorauthor.com/ Substack: https://jotaylorauthor.substack.com/ https://x.com/JoTaylorAuthor https://www.instagram.com/jotaylorauthor/   Purchase Margaret of Thibodaux on Amazon: Paperback: https://amzn.to/463ocIY Ebook: https://amzn.to/45I7GiE   Teri M Brown, Author and Podcast Host: https://www.terimbrown.com FB: @TeriMBrownAuthor IG: @terimbrown_author X: @terimbrown1   Want to be a guest on Online for Authors? Conspiracies,a little sports, a top 5 list of best movie and sequel, a little spooky stuff. We talk a bunch about New Orleans and get a little real with stuff going on in the real world. This episode probably is a lot closer to the first months of this show; which I drrifted away from rather unintentionally, and surprisingly. Nevertheless, we're going to do stuff like this more often. I think.

✦ Brunching in Atlanta is practically a sport, and many of us don't know how to play. There are strategies involved—arrive early to beat the rush of a crowd, or maybe you're a diner that prefers to make reservations. BUT in this economy, who has the money to drop $80 to $100 on breakfast food and drinks every weekend? In our new mini-series, "Brunchin' on a Budget," we look at several delicious AND affordable brunch spots in Atlanta. On today's installment of "Brunchin' on a Budget," WABE Arts Reporter Summer Evans heads to Memorial Drive to highlight Homegrown. ✦ City Lights Collective member Shane Harrison spends his days at Arts ATL looking for cultural events to share with readers. He joins us weekly to share highlights, and today his mix includes House in the Park, The Atlanta Black Theater Festival, and a preview of Dragon Con. ✦ Dee Dee Bridgewater embodies jazz. She takes jazz standards and makes them her own while being true to the original composition. This is something she's done before and since releasing her debut album in 1974. No stranger to Atlanta, Ms. Bridgewater returns to the Rialto Center for the Arts on September 6 to the delight of all. Ahead of her concert, City Lights Collective Co-Host Jon Goode sat down with Ms. Bridgewater to discuss her new album, her return to Atlanta, and to share a laugh or three. ✦ Get ready for some cinematic chaos, VHS Deathmatch is coming to Monday Night Garage on September 26th. Part screening, part comedy showdown, the event takes the best (and worst) of B-movie VHS tapes and pits them head-to-head for ultimate bragging rights. City Lights Collective producer Josh Thane spoke with organizer Kristopher Bolz about the madness audiences can expect at the Deathmatch. ✦ Kosmo Vinyl is a visual artist and lifelong music lover. He bought his first LP when he was just nine years old and went on to spend decades immersed in the world of music. He got his start at London's groundbreaking indie label Stiff Records, and in 1979, he began working exclusively with The Clash—staying with the band until they disbanded in 1986. Today, Kosmo's legendary record collection fuels his social media series Kosmo's Vinyl of the Week, and he joins us every Wednesday to share the stories behind the records he treasures. Today, he tells us the story behind Creedence Clearwater Revival's 1969 hit, "Born on the Bayou." ✦ Ebony magazine debuted in 1945 and quickly became an inspiring celebration of Black life, culture, and achievement. The monthly magazine thrived for over seven decades, and within its pages lived the iconic column, "Fashion Fair," created by Eunice W. Johnson. "Mrs. Johnson," as all reverently called her, is the subject of the children's book, "Miles of Style," Eunice W. Johnson and the Ebony Fashion Fair." The book is the first by Atlanta author Lisa D. Brathwaite, and when City Lights Collective co-host Kim Drobes spoke with the author last year, Brathwaite explained how she first learned about Mrs. Johnson.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

When photographer Dimitri Staszewski began his Close to the Bayou project, he was drawn to the layered and deeply personal relationship between people and place in southern Louisiana. His photographs explore the impact of land loss, environmental change, and cultural resilience, capturing stories that exist at the intersection of identity, heritage, and survival. Rather than portraying the region solely through the lens of crisis, Dimitri embraces its complexity—revealing beauty, strength, and an ongoing dialogue between past and present. At its heart, the story also reflects an intimate exploration of mortality, acknowledging how lives and traditions are shaped by both loss and continuity. His work asks us to consider how landscapes shape lives and how photography can honor both fragility and endurance. Close to the Bayou is a testament to the power of visual storytelling to preserve memory and amplify voices in communities too often misrepresented or overlooked. Shady Oak has shifted its name to “Brewing Company, so it is now called Shady Oak Brewing Company, after being called “Barrel House” until now. Harry Duke knows Shady Oak founder Steve Doty from having competed in trivia contests on opposing teams.  When Steve started Shady Oak, they made a lot of sour beers, but as tastes have changed, they have begun making other styles, like hazy and pilsners. The company is also starting to focus on organizing events. It is in a big space that is a former carpet warehouse. It is located in downtown Santa Rosa, near the Santa Rosa Mall. They also have a nice outdoor space in the back. The Smash Bash: Saturday, Aug. 16, 2025 They have remodeled the back area for this event, increasing capacity. This Saturday they are holding their first event. It is the first annual Smash Bash, they have the four best smash burger restaurants coming in. They have four well-known local food trucks coming in: Thanks for the Invite, Bayou on the Bay, Bennie's Smash Burgers and The Spot. All four of them will be on the scene for the contest. They will have DJs and live bands. Some illustrious judges will pick a winner. Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their big Windsor location. Visit their website for up-to-date hours, menus, beers and more. A smash burger has the pattie smashed all the way down to a thin patty. Sometimes people lay 2 or three thick, plus condiments at will. Bayou on the Bay comes in regularly for their bingo nights. They wanted to do a contest and boom, this was the idea. Hidden within the dense cypress trees, shrouded in thick fog, lies a creature that has haunted Cajun stories for generations—the fearsome Rougarou.   Part man, part wolf, and entirely terrifying, the Rougarou is said to roam the bayous under the light of the moon, cursed to hunt endlessly through the tangled marshes. With roots in French and Cajun tradition, this shapeshifting beast has been passed down through centuries of storytelling. But is it merely a cautionary tale meant to keep children from wandering too far into the swamp—or could there be something real lurking in those dark waters?   We'll explore the origins of the Rougarou legend, tracing its lineage back to the French loup‑garou myth and its transformation into the Louisiana version known today. You'll hear how local superstition, Catholic influence, and the unique culture of the Cajun people shaped this chilling narrative. From whispered warnings in French Creole to modern-day eyewitness accounts, the Rougarou continues to hold a grip on the imagination of those who call the swamp home.   But the Rougarou is only part of the story. Louisiana's swamps are a realm unto themselves—alive with mystery and danger. Towering moss-draped trees, hidden sinkholes, and unseen creatures beneath the water create an atmosphere where fact and folklore intertwine. Hunters, fishermen, and swamp guides have long reported strange sounds echoing through the night: splashes with no visible source, low growls, glowing eyes peering from the brush. Could these be signs of the Rougarou—or something even more unknown?   In this episode, we take you into the marshes through vivid storytelling and chilling accounts from locals who swear they've seen something out there. We'll examine possible real-world explanations for the Rougarou legend, from mistaken identities to regional wildlife, as well as the theory that the swamps themselves are a natural breeding ground for supernatural lore.   We'll also touch on how the Rougarou legend has woven itself into Louisiana's culture today—appearing in festivals, parades, and local art, while still carrying that unsettling sense of danger. For many, the Rougarou isn't just a Halloween tale—it's a reminder that there are still wild, untamed forces just beyond the edge of civilization.   So, grab your lantern, step carefully into the pirogue, and join us as we paddle into the misty backwaters in search of truth, myth, and maybe even a glimpse of the Rougarou itself. Whether you're a skeptic, a believer, or just someone who loves a good swamp ghost story, this is one journey you won't want to miss.   Listen now to discover why the Rougarou remains one of America's most enduring—and most chilling—cryptid legends, and why Louisiana's swamps are the perfect place for such a creature to hide.   Welcome to the 222 Paranormal Podcast, your gateway to the captivating world of the supernatural.
