This week three films about moral panics, the imagined threats lurking to upset social order from morality police happy to stoke public fear for a payout. A harmless game played by a group of college students. Nothing wrong with any of it... except... what if the game goes too far? What if an obviously schizophrenic player with a history of unresolved family trauma has a sudden and immediate break from reality while playing? It MUST be the game's fault and not anything else. I said, NOT ANYTHING ELSE, okay? Tom Hanks, in the brief period between Bosom Buddies and Splash, acts his little TV movie loving heart out while being corrupted by MAZES & MONSTERS. A fictionalized account of the rise of Norwegian Black Metal. Euronymous and his band Mayhem create a new subgenre that is eagerly devoured, by not just local youth, but globally. When the band is derailed by a tragedy, they regroup opening a record shop that is also a social hub for their growing brand of music. It isn't long until everything goes wrong and the dark edge of their music leads to arson and murder. Based on the book of the same name, titled after a group not connected to the events depicted here, Lords of Chaos. Billy Tipton was a jazz musician, talent agent, caring husband and doting father. When Billy died, a closely guarded secret was revealed, and his life was spun and reframed by tabloids and talk shows in the very LGBT unfriendly late-1980s. A meta-biographical documentary about both Tipton and some more modern trans masculine experiences. Layered revelations and personal interpretations try to reframe Billy's life and legacy from the sensationalist view that has dominated it in the decades after his death. A film about trying to have an ordinary life while being No Ordinary Man. All that and Tyler wears corpse paint, Dave gets his musical theater on, and Kevin casts a wide net in the cinematic ocean. Join us, won't you? Episode 314- Perturbing Behaviour

"No Ordinary Man" examines the life of jazz musician Billy Tipton, who became an inspiration to the transgender community after his death in 1989. Filmmakers Aisling Chin-Yee and Chase Joynt explore how Tipton's story was at first sensationalized and now re-framed by a new generation.
Brace yourselves for moving documentaries and Netflix horror this week! First, we discuss NO ORDINARY MAN (2:14), Aisling Chin-Yee and Chase Joynt's emotional documentary about trans jazz musician Billy Tipton, which features insightful commentary about the trans experience, and seeks to reclaim Tipton's life story for the trans community. We continue on in documentary territory with Morgan Neville's ROADRUNNER: A FILM ABOUT ANTHONY BOURDAIN (18:57), a haunting examination of the famous chef/television host's life, addictions, and loneliness that also beautifully honors his legacy. Last but not least, we dig into FEAR STREET: PART ONE - 1994 (41:39), the fun first installment in Leigh Janiak's Netflix horror trilogy, which is based on R.L. Stine's famous book series and stars Kiana Medeira, Olivia Scott Welch, and Benjamin Flores Jr. And in this week's Patreon bonus audio, we talk about Nora Ephron's 1998 rom-com YOU'VE GOT MAIL, starring Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks!
As his documentary about Billy Tipton goes into release, I was able to sit down with co-director Chase Joynt to discuss their unique approach to the subject matter of this wonderful documentary.

Director Chase Joynt joins us to talk about his film No Ordinary Man, an in-depth look at the life of musician and trans culture icon Billy Tipton. Tipton was born in Oklahoma in 1914, and with the limited resources of the 1930s, had no choice but to transition alone. Entering the heady world of jazz as a pianist and band leader, he enjoyed a long and successful career, becoming a husband and father of three adopted sons in the 1960s. He never shared his gender history with anyone and when he died in 1989, the press seized on the public outing, generating much lurid coverage and incredulity. No Ordinary Man uses a unconventional format to explore the meaning of his life and legacy from the perspective of trans artists today. Dream is a new collaborative production by the RSC which isn’t quite like their usual work. It uses actors, stop motion techniques, graphics and interactivity familiar from gaming and puts them into a pandemic-proof online show inspired by A Midsummer Night’s Dream: a live performance in a virtual forest. Could this point the way to future developments on stage and screen? Critic Naima Khan gives her verdict. Looking for an accompaniment to working from home? Search “lofi hiphop” on YouTube and among the hours of background music mixes and Anime pictures, you’ll find communities of students and workers from around the world congregating to listen and work together. Journalists Allegra Frank and Wil Jones explain the appeal of the channels, the music and the communities around them. Conductor James Levine, who led New York's Metropolitan Opera for 40 years before being fired over sexual abuse allegations, has died at the age of 77.
www.TheDavidAlliance.com TDAgiantslayer@gmail.com webstix.com Tony Herman - the coolest cat on the net How gullible are you? Can you be fooled pretty easily? Most people are overly confident that they cannot be deceived and they would recognize a fraud or being taken advantage of better than most… and those are exactly the people who get taken advantage of the most. Deception A woman who says she bought magic wands from a self-described psychic to erase negative thoughts says $5,400 of her money was all that disappeared. Joann Zansky, 57, said she paid a woman who claims to be a psychic $1,800 for each of three wands. "She was a terrific actress," Zansky said. "I believed her." Zansky said she contacted Bethlehem police after she became suspicious about the effectiveness of the wands. "We're investigating," police Lt. Robert Righi said. "Possibly it is some violation of consumer fraud." No charges have been filed against the woman named in the complaint. A person who answered the phone at the woman's business said she was unavailable. Heres a question who should you be more mad at… the woman selling you the fake magic wands or you for believing in the fake magic wands… We could debate that all day, but lets get back to it in a second. No one, and I mean no one likes to be deceived, taken advantage of or fooled. It belittles you and makes you feel foolish and look gullible to those around you. The last time you were taken for a ride, how did you feel? What did you want to do to that person… probably some not so nice things. And maybe rightfully so… but still its not as bad as… as bad as what? Remember the question about the magic wands? Who should you be most upset with - the person selling the magic wands or you believing the magic wands? So to be deceived by someone is bad… but there is one thing that trumps being deceived by someone… James 1:22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. OUCH… yea thats right. When you deceive yourself it really stings. So my answer to the magic wand question is you should be more mad at yourself for deceiving yourself for believing the sham. How man of you right now are deceived thinking that you are a pretty good christian man (or woman if you are listening) You go to church, you read your bible, you attend bible study, you give in the offering… But you don't do the word. You don't really live it, you don't really practice it… You are deceived… worst of all, you are deceived by yourself. No one to blame. As Robert plant has so eloquently sung “its nobody's fault but mine”. See the problem with self deception is that you live it for so long you actually believe it, and others do too. So they thought he was a she…. He was a She: Everyone thought jazz musician Billy Tipton was a "he". Only as Tipton was dying at 74 in 1989 did paramedics discover "he" was a she. Tipton began masquerading as a to get gigs in the '30's--and later married and adopted three sons. Even his kids didn't know until after the death. Said one: "He'll always be Dad." -Time man Now you ask… how can that happen. How can you go so long deceiving yourself and others… someone has to find out at some point right? Apparently not until death. There is the lesson. Maybe you are so deceived that you may not find out that you are a phony until death… when God says… uh excuse me “who are you?”. So what's the solution “DO THE WORD”. As my Dad said a 1000 times Read Pray and Obey… to complicated still??? I will dumb it down for you READ PRAY AND DO! Don't poser, be a doer!

No Ordinary Man - Co-director Chase Joynt (Aisling Chin-Yee) In the documentary film No Ordinary Man The legacy of Billy Tipton, a 20th-century American jazz musician and trans icon, is brought to life by a diverse group of contemporary trans artists. Revered jazz musician Billy Tipton — born Dorothy Lucille Tipton — gained fame throughout the United States in the 1940s and ’50s. His trans identity was not known throughout the echelons of the jazz and pop worlds, and it wasn’t revealed publicly until after his death in 1989. For decades, Tipton was portrayed as an ambitious woman “passing” as a man in pursuit of a music career at a time when the industry was dominated by men and trans representation was virtually non-existent. Since then, he has become a foundational icon of trans-masculinity. Co-directors Aisling Chin-Yee and Chase Joynt’s examine the disgraceful media scrutiny and questions of legitimacy his family endured after his death. This thoughtful, timely documentary embraces the challenge of bringing Tipton’s words to life, reimagining his narrative through a diverse group of contemporary trans performers as they collectively paint a portrait of an unlikely hero. NO ORDINARY MAN explores the life and legacy of American jazz musician and trans icon Billy Tipton as told through the eyes of today’s leading voices in the trans community. NO ORDINARY MAN features Marquise Vilsón, Scott Turner Schofield, Susan Stryker, C. Riley Snorton, and Thomas Page McBee, among others. Co-director Chase Joynt (Aisling Chin-Yee) and Writer Amos Mac join us to talk about the life and the times of an artist, husband and father hiding in plain sight and how Billy Tipton’s story informs and imbues today’s trans community.
