We were supposed to talk about Deacon King Kong. We did not. When Jen sat down with Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist James McBride to discuss the Jen Hatmaker Book Club's May selection, the conversation took a hard left turn into something far richer — a wide-ranging tour through one of the most remarkable lives in American letters. James opens up about a scrappy and troubled adolescence in Brooklyn, getting straightened out in the heat of the Louisville, Kentucky summers, and the music that quite literally saved him. He reminisces about touring Europe as a young musician and playing saxophone alongside Stevie Ray Vaughan at Antone's in Austin, traveling with Michael Jackson on the Victory Tour as a young journalist, surviving the Boston Globe's newsroom in the 1980s, writing songs for Anita Baker and Grover Washington, working with Quincy Jones, and getting dressed down by Harry Belafonte in a writers' room. Along the way, he reflects on race, art, faith, forgiveness, music, storytelling, old cars, and why the best writers are simply the people paying closest attention. He also shares what gives him hope about America right now — and it might surprise you. Of course, we touch on Deacon King Kong—its unforgettable characters, humor, and heart—but this conversation became something even bigger: a portrait of the life experiences that shaped the storyteller behind the book. Come for the book club discussion. Stay for one of the most fascinating conversations Jen has had in a long time. Oh, and Deacon King Kong is a masterpiece. You should absolutely read it. For the 35th anniversary of Slint's landmark second album, Spiderland, we take a detailed look at how it was made. Brian McMahan and Britt Walford first connected over a shared love of punk rock, growing up in Louisville, Kentucky in the early 1980s. They began forming bands when they were young teenagers, including Languid and Flaccid and Squirrel Bait. Another band, Maurice, was formed around this time and they began working with guitarist David Pajo. When Maurice ended, Walford and Pajo continued playing together and brought in bassist Ethan Buckler. After they performed at a unitarian church service where McMahan was in attendance, he joined the band soon after and they became Slint. They had befriended Steve Albini from playing shows with his band Big Black so they asked him to record their debut album. Tweez was self-released by their friend Jennifer Hartman in 1989. Buckler was unhappy with the sound of the record and decided to quit the band so Todd Brashear took over on bass. They recorded a single with Albini that caught the attention of Touch and Go Records, who signed them to a deal for their second album. After spending a summer working on new material, they recorded at a commercial studio in Chicago with producer Brian Paulson. Spiderland was eventually released in 1991. In this episode, Brian McMahan, Britt Walford, David Pajo and Todd Brashear describe the underground music scene in Louisville that first drew them together. Walford discusses the hours they would spend in his parents' basement, woodshedding songs and coming up with arrangements. As each song would start as an instrumental, he describes how the vocals would be an afterthought that the band usually wouldn't hear until they were in the studio. McMahan describes his reluctance to be the singer of the band as he preferred to work in isolation on a 4-track and come up with mostly spoken word sections to fit the music. Pajo talks about his paired down approach to guitar and how he developed a clean sound that was a reaction against the heavily distorted guitars of the punk and hardcore scene at the time. Brashear talks about being an early fan of the band, jumping at the opportunity to be their new bass player even though bass wasn't his primary instrument. The many hours they spent in the practice space working up the songs allowed them to track the record in a single weekend. Even though the band ended up breaking up before the album was released, Spiderland went on to become a touchstone of the underground music scene, reaching far beyond their Louisville community. From counting out odd time signatures, to a surprising emphasis on dynamics, to embracing vulnerability in punk, to the coming of age themes that made the record so relatable, to the liquid courage that was required for the cathartic “Good Morning Captain” vocals, to battling anxiety and depression during a difficult stage of life, to the enduring friendships they've been able to maintain over the years, to the power of the practice space, we'll hear the stories around how the album came together.

I love hearing testimonies. Whether it's a young entrepreneur landing their first customer, someone learning a new skill, or a business owner finally breaking through, every success story starts the same way: with a decision to begin. In this episode, we're talking about why you're not too young, too inexperienced, or too early to start learning business, leadership, software, sales, and life-changing skills that can shape your future. Your testimony is being written right now. The question is: what story will you tell?

Dan Campbell flips the switch at OTAs Dan Campbell sounded different on Friday. The Detroit Lions head coach came across caffeinated, focused, and all business. He pushed a reset. He stressed football first, everything else second. "It takes everybody to win, and it takes everybody to probably lose," he said, framing the summer with clarity. Campbell acknowledged the noise that follows success. "It's a lot easier when nobody knows who you are," he noted, pointing to hype, players getting paid, and coaches moving on as distractions from the core. His directive was simple. Get back to work. Make it about football. Make it about the guy next to you. That message read like a mission statement for 2026. It fit the Detroit Lions trajectory and the standards he set in previous climbs. Back to basics after a noisy offseason The discussion touched on process tweaks. Questions about a rookie camp and fewer pre draft visits came up around his offseason deep dive. Campbell would not pin last year's disappointments on any one thing. He leaned into no nonsense. The NFL rewards teams that handle details and ignore the echo. Jeff Risdon framed the moment against a shifting landscape. He pointed to staff movement, citing the Ben Johnson departure and a Martin Glenn departure. He also noted how a roster with paid stars changes daily life. Internal hype can creep in. Campbell's message cuts through that. The Detroit Lions Podcast circled it as the right antidote. Football first. Teammate first. Everything aligned with the head coach's voice. OTAs snapshot and what comes next Friday's open OTA session gave a look, but not a full reveal. Jeff was not in attendance and did not feel he missed much. Interviews from the field with Scott Bischoff and Scott DiBenedetto helped fill in context. It is June. Installation, tone setting, and baseline habits matter more than headlines. The show also teased summer content. Emery Hunt is slated to join to talk UFL prospects. Louisville has UFL buzz, with the Louisville Kings drawing interest even after the Michigan Panthers' exit from the market. The viability of a second league will be a topic on a future live stream. The NFL calendar slows now, but the evaluation drum keeps beating. Campbell's words are the thread through it all. Peel away the hype. Ignore the side shows. The Detroit Lions can fly under the radar again only by choice. They can choose the hard, boring work that wins. Friday sounded like that choice. #detroitlions #lions #detroitlionspodcast #dancampbell #otas #lionsoffseason #pressconference #bradholmes Learn more about your ad choices. The latest news for Monday, June 1, 2026 from the Louisville Public Media newsroom in Louisville, Kentucky.
In 1864, a family of Virginians found themselves in war torn Atlanta with a decision to make - head home or plant roots. This was the birth of what would become known as Paul Jones & Company. Over the years, there have been several stories floating around about how the flagship whiskey they later established in Louisville got its name. Was it because of a dance and proposal to a Southern Belle? Was it lifted from an Atlanta competitor's name? Or was it simply a name that came from the imagination of Paul Jones? Today, I'll look to answer that question while taking you beyond the Season One episode to the very origins of Four Roses Bourbon.

We'll also have a little fun along the way and hear what both Sophia and Will hope to say at the end of this internship journey. And look for Part 2 of this episode, which will debut in Season 12. We'll check in with Sophia and Will again near the end of their internship and find out what they accomplished, how good they were at predicting their internship experiences, and see what advice they have for future interns.

Get ready to flop on the floor this week - we'll be doing the Alligator, as mentioned in "Land of 1,000 Dances"! The first in our animal menagerie is "Alligator Meat" by Charlie Singleton & His Orchestra from 1951, which sounds like Slim Gaillard if he rocked, rather than jazzed. After dinner, enjoy "Alligator Stomp" by The Rampages - a throwback rocker from 1964. That same year, "The 100 Mile An Hour Alligator" by The P.J. Murphy Quintet captured the ferocity and energy of the titular animal in a spiffy intro number. Frat-tastic! Next, The Dynamic Kapers offer us some "Alligator Wine" to wash down the gator meat. It's an early Leiber/Stoller tune! Before they kissed you all over in the 70s, Jimmy Stokley & The Exiles warned us it was "Alligator Time." It's even more salacious than their later paean to sex! We saved the best for last with "The Alligator" by The Us Four from Louisville, Kentucky. This song has it all, dual vocals, cool percussion, an upfront organ, and koool lyrics that implore you to forget all other dances! Dance this mess around!!

If you work with or manage a Type 4 (or if you are a Type 4!) this one's for you. In this episode of our Starting Monday series, we're breaking down the do's and don'ts of giving feedback as an Enneagram Type 4: the Visionary. As always, the goal is simple: take these insights and put them to work by Monday. What You'll Hear in This EpisodeType 4s bring something genuinely rare to feedback conversations: real, deep empathy. They have an almost uncanny ability to see the whole person in front of them, not just their performance, but who they are. That's a gift. But like every type, the very thing that makes the 4 great at feedback can also get in the way if left unchecked. We walk through three things to do and three things to avoid when giving feedback as a Type 4, including a specific phrase you can use to open the conversation in a way that's both honest and caring.3 Things to DO as a Type 4 When Giving FeedbackLead with genuine connection. You naturally create emotional safety. Let the other person feel seen before you get into the substance of the feedback. Back up your observations with specifics. "I noticed in the last three meetings, you seemed disengaged" lands differently than "something feels off with your energy lately." You're still using your intuition, just anchoring it in something observable and actionable.Trust that honesty is kindness. Clear is kind. You may want to protect people from discomfort, but holding back the feedback they need isn't protecting them; it's withholding. You'll deliver it with care. Trust that.3 Things to AVOID as a Type 4 When Giving FeedbackLetting the emotional temperature of the room decide what gets said. If the other person seems fragile or it "doesn't feel like the right moment," the conversation can keep getting pushed. Check in with yourself — it might actually be exactly the right time.Framing everything through feelings language alone. "My sense is..." and "it felt like..." are valid, but they need to be paired with observable specifics. Without them, the feedback can be too easy to dismiss.Making it about your emotional experience rather than theirs. It's a subtle shift, but an important one. Ask yourself: whose feelings are being centered here?A Phrase to Try"I want to share something with you because I think you're capable of more , and I care too much about you and your success to stay quiet about it."Make it yours. But that spirit of "I see more in you than what's happening right now" is very much in the Type 4 wheelhouse, and it's a powerful way to open a hard conversation.Resources + Next Steps1) Have something to add? Are you a Type 4 who wants to push back on something or share what's worked for you? Or do you work with a Type 4 and want to share what you appreciate about the way they give feedback? We'd love to hear from you at enneagrammba.com/contact.2) If you want to keep exploring how to lead and communicate better by type, grab the Enneagram Manager's Prompt Pack. It's a practical, downloadable guide organized by real workplace situations so you always know what to say and how to say it. This week on Truth to Power, we bring you a conversation about "Interwar Germany and the U.S. Today: Are They Comparable Cases of the Failure of Democracy and the Rise of Dictatorship?" This virtual community conversation with Christopher R. Browning, Professor Emeritus of History at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, took place on February 24, 2026, and was organized by the Oberlin Club of Washington, D.C. Given the propensity to invoke Hitler, Nazism, and fascism in current political discussion, historians of Europe in the era of fascist dictatorship, World War II, and the Holocaust should set a high bar for responsible and informed analogizing, against which facile and distorted attempts can be measured and found wanting. This talk will attempt a careful comparison and contrast between Hitler and Trump as personalities and politicians, as well as between the fall of Weimar and rise of Nazi dictatorship on the one hand and current events and trends in the U.S. on the other. Professor Browning will do so operating from the premise that insights based upon knowledge of the past are very important for illuminating and understanding our current situation, but the careless weaponizing of the past simply to stigmatize one's opponents is self-defeating. Christopher R. Browning is the Frank Porter Graham Professor History Emeritus at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill where he taught from 1999-2014. He is a specialist on the Holocaust and renowned for work documenting the Final Solution, the behavior of those implementing Nazi policies, and the use of survivor testimony. Earlier, he taught at Pacific Lutheran University from 1974-1999. Christopher is the author of nine books, including three–Ordinary Men (1992), The Origins of the Final Solution (2004), and Remembering Survival (2010)—which received the National Jewish Book Award in the Holocaust Category. He has served as historical expert witness at two Holocaust denial trials: Ernst Zündel v. Crown Prosecution in Toronto in 1988, and David Irving v. Deborah Lipstadt and Penguin Press in London in 2000. Christopher was a History major at Oberlin and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in 2014. He earned his PhD in History from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He currently resides in the Pacific Northwest with his wife Jenni Horn Browning '67. Attracting former residents back to Louisville — boomerangs, as they're known — could potentially be a way to increase the city's population. But there are challenges to it. LBF Senior Reporter Joel Stinnett joins us to talk about some of those issues on this week's Access Louisville podcast.Stinnett just wrapped up a cover story on the topic of boomerangs and how they fit into Louisville's growth strategy. The biggest stumbling block is the job market. In spite job gains in some sectors, Louisville doesn't have a lot of options for people holding advance degrees. Those jobs are often confined to bigger metropolises. Stinnett also looked at programs that small cities like Topeka, Kansas and Tulsa, Oklahoma have implemented in order to address a similar problem. After the boomerang discussion, we chat with Reporter Michael L. Jones about the financial troubles being experienced by Memorial Auditorium in Louisville and how a looming Metro budget cut may impact it. We also chat about an upcoming move by The Whirling Tiger, the closure of the Bristol Bar & Grille restaurant in Downtown Louisville and a pending relocation for Texas Roadhouse in Clarksville. "Hey White people, where y'all going? I'm Zimbabwean. I know this trend, and I am NOT going through this again." In this explosive episode, Patrick unpacks a viral, chilling warning from a Zimbabwean immigrant drawing a direct line between the historical collapse of Rhodesia and the modern, single-party-dominated American cities experiencing massive demographic shifts. When Robert Mugabe seized white-owned farms under the guise of "equity" in 2000, Zimbabwe's food production plummeted by 60%, and life expectancy for women crashed from 57 to just 34 years. The show confronts a hard, uncomfortable truth: across America, families are quietly abandoning major metros because they no longer feel safe, leaving behind a wake of rising crime, victim-mentality education, and chaotic urban lawlessness. We pull back the curtain on the institutional brainwashing driving this societal decay. From 53 arrests and confiscated weapons at a violent gathering in Chicago to an eighth-grade graduation in Louisville turned into a bitter grievance rally, our youth are being systematically radicalized to view America as an inherently oppressive nation. Meanwhile, on the streets of Newark, leftists form human blockades to protect criminal illegal aliens from deportation, while everyday citizens—like a fed-up trucker and families devastated by illegal immigrant crime—are left to bear the physical and economic fallout. The episode fearlessly exposes the modern anti-American narrative, confronting the erosion of personal accountability, the collapse of the nuclear family, and the deliberate rewriting of history that hides how the West actually led the world in abolishing slavery. Finally, the battle lines get deep. Patrick takes you inside his own war against the administrative state: Patrick Hogarty vs. Cherry Creek School District. While the Colorado school district faces a staggering $23 million budget shortfall and numerous civil rights lawsuits, they still find the capital to fund a bloated, 13-member "Equity" department led by an activist whose own social media features "Viva La Raza" and anti-ICE rhetoric. The district ruined a man's livelihood under the claim that loving America makes a teacher unfit to educate children—all while harboring radical ideologues in their own administration. Pat isn't backing down, and this episode is a fiery, unfiltered rallying cry for parents, patriots, and citizens ready to fight back against the forces tearing our nation apart from the inside out.

The Hidden Causes of Brain Fog, Anxiety, and Chronic Illness: Mold, Parasites, Histamine, and Low Cortisol If you're exhausted, inflamed, and can't figure out why, the answer might be hiding in your histamine, your hormones, your home, or something living inside you that your doctor will never test for. Watch this episode on YouTube for the full video experience: https://www.youtube.com/@DaveAspreyBPR Host Dave Asprey sits down with Dr. Jessica Peatross, a former hospitalist turned functional medicine powerhouse who walked away from a conventional medical career after discovering that 90% of disease traces back to lifestyle, environment, and the toxins most doctors ignore. After graduating magna cum laude and earning her medical degree from the University of Louisville, Dr. Jess pursued training in functional medicine, nutrigenomics, and alternative therapies, and now helps thousands of patients reverse chronic illness through her KillBindSweat method and WellnessPlus app. She is also the formulator and CMO of Aegis Formulas and a leading voice at international health conferences. If chronic illness, mold toxicity, or hormonal chaos is on your radar, she is the person you want in your corner. Together, Dave and Dr. Jess go deep into the hidden drivers of mystery symptoms that functional medicine is finally starting to crack open. They cover why low cortisol is more dangerous than high cortisol, how histamine and mast cell activation syndrome explain everything from anxiety and brain fog to endometriosis and POTS, and why most "Lyme disease" is actually undiagnosed mold toxicity. They also break down the parasite epidemic hiding in plain sight across the United States, the B vitamin mistake making millions of people sicker, and why your metabolism, mitochondria, and mental health are all downstream of things your standard lab panel will never catch. This episode also gets into the real story behind Dr. Jess surrendering her California medical license rather than comply with a system she believed was working against patient health. Her firsthand account of the medical board process is something every person who cares about medical freedom needs to hear. You'll Learn: Why everyone who is chronically sick has a low cortisol awakening response and what to do about it How histamine drives anxiety, racing thoughts, palpitations, bloating, skin issues, and hormonal chaos Why 90% of people diagnosed with Lyme disease actually have toxic mold and how to test for both The parasite epidemic in the U.S. and why standard testing misses most of it How the spike protein reactivates dormant viruses and feeds the histamine loop behind long COVID Why synthetic B6 causes the very neuropathy it is supposed to fix, and what to take instead The cortisol, adrenaline, and blood pressure connection that explains "wired but tired" How progesterone stabilizes mast cells and why estrogen dominance fuels inflammation and reactivity Why Dave Asprey uses low-dose cortisol, dexamethasone, and modafinil as part of his daily performance stack The mold binders that actually work, and which popular ones can harm hypermobile people How nicotine at low doses blocks spike protein from ACE2 receptors and protects the brain What the MTHFR gene, methylation, and folic acid have to do with breast cancer, depression, and estrogen detox Thank you to our sponsors! - iRestore | Reverse hair loss at www.irestore.com/DAVE and get exclusive savings on the iRestore Elite, use code DAVE - KILLSwitch | If you're ready for the best sleep of your life, order now at https://www.switchsupplements.com/and use code DAVE for 20% off - Calroy | Go to Calroy.com/DAVE for exclusive discounts on Arterosil HP, Vascanox HP and all Calroy products. - Cowboy Colostrum | Get your gut right by going to cowboycolostrum.com/asprey for 25% off of your entire order. -Amp | If you're ready to make fitness fit into your life, go to amp.ai to check it outDave Asprey is a four-time New York Times bestselling author, founder of Bulletproof Coffee, and the father of biohacking. Is it getting windier? Long-time listener Barry Zalph thinks it is, at least in Louisville. And he's not the only one. Redditors and local reporters have noticed a recent uptick in the region's windstorms, too. But does that point to any larger trends in windiness? And if so, what could be causing it?
