Mothers Against GenocideThis column makes no apologies for writing so much about the genocide in Palestine and the urgent need for ceasefires and a peace process.  At least 14,000 babies face imminent death from starvation. Over 60,000 Palestinian children, women, men have been killed, including more than 4,000 since Israel ended its ceasefire in March. One especially harrowing example of Israel's murder machine at work was the deliberate targeting last Friday of the family home of Hamdi and Walaa al-Najjar, two doctors who work at Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis. As Hamdi was at work nine of her ten children were killed. Her husband and a 10th child was left critically ill.Mothers Against Genocide have stood up against this savagery and for the rights of the Palestinian people. Sue Pentel and Martine McCullough are active in this campaign. Sue has been a political activist all her life. My earliest memory of her is as a member of Women against Imperialism over 40 years ago. Sue is a Gaeilgeoir who has worked for decades promoting the education of our young people through the medium of Irish. She is also a committed advocate for the rights of the people of Palestine and last weekend she and her friend Martine were arrested by the PSNI and charged with ‘criminal damage' to an ATM at Barclays Bank in Castle Place in Belfast City Centre. The so-called criminal damage was the placing of a sticker on the machine as a reminder of Barclays role in selling Israeli war bonds.‘If I Must Die'There will be a public event this Saturday – 31 May - about the ongoing genocide. The venue is St Comgalls/Ionad Eileen Howell and it starts at 7.30pm. Chairing the meeting, which is sponsored by the Bobby Sands Trust, will be Dr Brendan Ciaran Browne, Associate Professor of Conflict Resolution. The main speaker will be Yousef M. Aljamal On the International Wall in Belfast there is a poem by Refaat Alareer, ‘If I Must Die' which he wrote for his daughter, Shaymaa, who would grow up to be an accomplished illustrator. It is very poignant because the Israelis went on to kill Refaat, along with his sister, brother and four of nephews and nieces, eighteen months ago. Give the vote to 16-year-old citizens. The debate on reducing the voting age to 16 is gathering momentum. Twice in the last decade the Assembly – minus the DUP - has endorsed the call for the vote to be reduced in the North from 18 to 16. Several years ago Sinn Féin introduced a Bill in the Oireachtas to allow for this in southern elections and last week An Taoiseach Micheál Martin said that he had an “open mind” on such a proposition and would give it “serious consideration.”The Commission on the Future of Ireland are hosting 'Health & Care in a New Ireland' on the 6th of June, 1pm at St Comgalls, Belfast.Register here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/health-care-in-a-new-ireland-tickets-1354804690299

Walaa’s life was forever changed when her home was set on fire in an arson attack, a moment that forced her to confront her deepest fears and the idea of surrendering to death. Yet, it was in facing her own vulnerabilities — the parts of herself she found most uncomfortable and “cringe” — that she discovered her path to healing. This profound self-acceptance led to the creation of “The Cringe Theory,” a powerful tool to help others transform their pain into growth. The birth of her daughter marked her true rebirth, as she found new strength and purpose in motherhood, realizing that through embracing life’s challenges, she could rise anew and help others do the same.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Luke's ENGLISH Podcast - Learn British English with Luke Thompson

When Walaa was first on this podcast in episode 703 she talked about living in Syria as a student during the civil war (or people's revolution) but at that time she felt she could not talk in detail about the situation. Now that the Assad regime is no longer in control of Syria, Walaa feels she can talk more candidly about what it was like to live near Damascus during those days. Walaa's descriptions are both shocking and moving. This is the topic of this episode, which is part 2 of a two-part series.

Luke's ENGLISH Podcast - Learn British English with Luke Thompson

Walaa Mouma returns to the podcast after 4 years to give us an update about her academic studies and personal story, including getting married and moving to Wales, details of her PhD doctorate, as well as her other studies and volunteer work helping to teach English to refugees and asylum seekers. Walaa's passion for this work is inspired by her own personal story of learning English, seeking asylum in the UK and studying in the UK's academic system, which she first talked about in episode 703 of this podcast. This event was a conversation around the special issue 'The Academic Question of Palestine' published by the journal Middle East Critique. This issue was guest-edited by Walaa Alqaisiya and Nicola Perugini. Drawing on the various contributions of the special issue, speakers discussed the sense of intellectual and political emergency that has triggered the need for this project—the emergency produced by thousands of instances of repression against scholarship, scholars, and students working on the question of Palestine across the world. Bringing together students and scholars, this event engaged with the epistemic ramifications of the question of Palestine, especially its theoretical and political relevance to freedom of speech, student mobilisation and academic boycott. Meet the speakers: Walaa Alqaisiya is a Marie Curie Global Fellow working across Ca' Foscari University of Venice, Columbia University and the London School of Economics and Political Science. Walaa is author of Decolonial Queering in Palestine (Routledge), which examines queer politics and aesthetics from a Palestinian native positionality. Dasha M is the former president of Columbia Law Students for Palestine, a constituent organization of the Columbia University Apartheid Divest (CUAD) coalition. Along with student peers in and outside CUAD, she co-wrote the article “Palestine is the Vanguard for Our Liberation: Insights from the Students' Intifada at Columbia University” featured in this special issue. Nicola Perugini is Senior Lecturer in International Relations at the University of Edinburgh. His research focuses mainly on the politics of international law, human rights, and violence. Lara Sheehi is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychology at the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies, Qatar. Lara's work takes up decolonial and anti-oppressive approaches to psychoanalysis, with a focus on liberation struggles in the Global South. Anna Younes is a German Palestinian scholar. Her focus rests on what she has coined the "war on antisemitism" in her 2015 PhD dissertation, a counterinsurgency war following in the footsteps of a post-WWII new world order, framed by tactics used in the War on Drugs and most prominently the War on Terror.

In this very exciting book that I couldn't put down - Neo-Traditionalism in Islam in the West: Orthodoxy, Spirituality, and Politics (Edinburgh University Press, 2023) - Walaa Quisay explores the trend of white male convert neo-traditionalist scholars in the West and their relationship with young seekers of sacred knowledge. She highlights the meanings of "tradition" that these scholars imagine and preach, even if it does not fit the reality of the Muslim cultures and countries that they imagine as purveyors of tradition.  Walaa particularly tells the story of three main shaykhs - Hamza Yusuf, Abdal Hakim Murad, and Umar Faruq Abd-Allah. She analyzes their perceptions of modernity, which they insist is destructive to the tradition, their ideas being very similar to white conservative western thinkers. Their idea of the tradition involves a kind of authentic Islam and Islamic tradition that only existed in the past because they have been polluted with modernity, especially with ideas of gender and social equality and Black Lives Matter. These white male convert scholars' Islam is deeply orientalist, as they scold Arab Muslims who no longer live in tents and enjoy modern technology, for example. For these shaykhs, authentic Islam can only be practiced without these modern innovations – which, to be sure, they themselves enjoy in the western countries where they live; it also necessitates a uniquely Moroccan aesthetic, such as in the clothing style, which is imposed on seekers from all over the world in these retreats. These seekers are individual Muslims of various backgrounds, from all around the world, who are eager to learn about their faith and to experience tradition and traditional Islam from these shaykhs. They pay large sums of money, depending on the retreat, to learn and connect with other Muslims. Notably, these shyakhs do not seem to think of the capitalism of the retreats and the costs as a modern practice that is worthy of rejection. The book's primary argument is that the concept of tradition is in fact not entirely theological or stable but, for the neo-traditionalists, it represents the antidote to modernity. Additionally, Walaa shows that while the neo-traditionalist shaykhs present the story of modernity and tradition one way, which is that modernity is fundamentally harmful to the tradition, the seekers engage with it differently, some even expressing their critiques of the shaykhs' arguments and the retreats at times. Throughout the book, Walaa describes the ways that these seekers receive and engage with the knowledge of the shyakhs. The seekers are tasked with the challenge of returning to modernity, to the real world, after the retreats, to practice their faith in a world the shaykhs teach them to escape, a world where politics of all forms, from gender and race and injustices, is harmful to the soul and should be avoided at all costs. The shyakhs are also very clear in their teachings that injustices are a punishment from God and those who experience them deserve them because they had distanced themselves from God. Yet, their appeal persists, and one of Walaa's objectives in the book is to explain why. Learn more about your ad choices. Walaa Quisay, "Neo-Traditionalism in Islam in the West" (Edinburgh UP, 2023)

Then, I was flicking through tiktok last week and I came across a post from today's guest, Dr. Walaa AlAbssi, a dentist from Gaza who came to Ireland in September to complete a Masters degree and immediately felt she was the right person to speak to. We're finally back after an accidental extended spring break due to mismatched schedules, traveling, mercury, etc., and we're excited to introduce you to an amazing guest! In episode #44 of the No Such Thing as Normal pod with Natalie Hayes and Jess McKeown we are chatting with not-just-another-color-therapist and healing guide, Walaa. Natalie had a deeply healing color reading based on her birth date with Walaa a few years ago that really impacted how she intuitively perceives the colors she's drawn to, and in this episode all our burning questions about color, healing, trauma, life, and the Universe get answered (mostly). We chatted with Walaa about her journey to color therapy, how she uses color to help her clients face their shadows and heal their trauma, the incredible work she's transitioning into next to take people even deeper down their healing path, and what various colors, aka spirits, communicate to her. As it turns out, the colors you are drawn to, or avoid, are subconsciously trying to tell you something! Walaa is so lovely to talk to and fascinating to learn from - we've never heard of anyone working with the frequencies of color the way she does before - and we're really excited to introduce her and her incredible intuitive gifts to you in this episode. If her work resonates with you and you'd like to explore more, you can find her on IG @walaa.colorways or discover your personal color archetype and sign up for her email list on her website at www.color-ways.com!

Forum Non Conveniens Dismissal Is Not A Judgment On The Merits The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals resolved insurance issues concerning cable-damage in the Arabian Gulf by recognizing the difference between a broker and an agent, the place where - and to whom - a policy was delivered, and how to deal with the issue personal jurisdiction the court has over the parties and that a forum non conveniens dismissal is not a judgment on the merits; it is, instead a determination that the merits should be adjudicated elsewhere. In Dynamic Industries, et al v. Walaa Cooperative Insurance Company; Marsh & McLennan et al, No. 22-30033, United States Court of Appeals, Fifth Circuit (March 13, 2023) the disputes were resolved. CLAIM OF INSUREDS The insureds (Dynamic) assert that their insurance brokers (Marsh) failed to procure adequate insurance coverage from the insurer (Walaa), or in the alternative, that Walaa breached the insurance policy by declining coverage for an incident involving undersea cable-damage in the Arabian Gulf. DISCUSSION First, as for Marsh, Louisiana law requires insureds who wish to sue their insurance broker to do so "within one year from the date that the alleged act, omission, or neglect . . . should have been discovered." [La. Rev. Stat. § 9:5606]. Case Against Broker Dynamic sued Marsh after Walaa denied coverage. But Dynamic received a copy of the insurance policy from Walaa almost 18 months earlier. When Dynamic received that copy, it also received constructive notice of any deficiencies that the policy contained. Dynamic's claims against Marsh are therefore untimely. Choice of Jurisdiction Dynamic argued that the Walaa policy's choice of Saudi Arabian law is unenforceable, under Louisiana law, if the policy was "delivered" in Louisiana. Dynamic says that it received delivery in Louisiana from Walaa's agent - a Marsh affiliate known as Marsh KSA. Walaa responded that Marsh KSA was actually Dynamic's agent, and that delivery therefore occurred in Saudi Arabia (where Walaa delivered the policy to Marsh KSA). The Fifth Circuit agreed with Walaa since Marsh, as a broker, is an agent of the insured not the insurer. Under Louisiana law, an insurance broker is generally deemed to be the agent of the insured rather than the insurer. A broker who is asked by the client to procure coverage wherever possible at the best price is not the agent of the insurer. Marsh KSA "approached" multiple insurers looking for a "competitive price" for Dynamic. Marsh KSA was thus Dynamic's agent. After conducting an independent assessment of the clause's enforceability, the district court properly concluded that delivery occurred in Saudi Arabia to the agent of the insured. LACK OF PERSONAL JURISDICTION Separately, the district court concluded that it lacked personal jurisdiction over a Marsh affiliate known as Marsh & McLennan Companies, Inc. ("Marsh Inc.). Yet the district court's judgment dismissed Dynamic's claims against Marsh Inc. "with prejudice" - that is, on the merits. " A federal court generally may not rule on the merits of a case without first determining that it has jurisdiction over the parties i.e., personal jurisdiction. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/barry-zalma/support

Walaa and Tessa take a look at how we can use color in processing and embracing emotions, what we paint our walls, and meditative sounds in color therapy. Not only do we have the basic rainbow to work with, but the shades, tones, and values are wider than we know. Walaa is a color therapist, spiritual coach, and interior designer. Key Takeaways1. Our color archetypes stem from the day and month we are born; the light and shadows telling us different aspects of our personalities. Color therapy is like a map from the sun, the rawest form of light, to understand ourselves better through the frequencies of color. 2. In our daily life, color can be utilized to manifest and foster emotions. Painting walls of different rooms specific colors and accenting with corresponding tones will make each aspect of the house unique. Wearing, for example, yellow when we are sad or orange when we are grieving, helps us bring out what we need to process. 3. With color, we can listen and meditate with color sound therapy. For every color archetype there are sounds that correspond that can be used for meditation and aligning our energy. Dr. Quisay's research looks at the Neo-Traditionalist Islamic movement, one of the most prominent Islamic intellectual and spiritual movements in the west. In this interview, co-host Daniel Tutt (@danieltutt) and Dr. Walaa Quisay examine how this movement thinks politics and justice, the origins of Islamism, how it differs from Neo-Traditionalism, whether Neo-Traditionalism is primarily a western movement, how it understands Marxism and Islamist movements, and how younger Muslims that are drawn to this movement are grappling with their subjectivities and with the political realities of the world. We also discuss Walaa's new research on Egypt post-Arab Spring.  Enjoy! *Music: "Like a Rolling Stone" by Bob Dylan

Our host Jake Wiafe is in this episode guested by award-winning documentary filmmaker Christy Garland from Toronto, Canada - the director of the documentary feature film What Walaa Wants, which was nominated for 9 awards and won the Special Jury Prize at the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival. Shot over five years, Christy Garland’s documentary is a classic coming-of-age story portraying Walaa from West Bank’s Balata Palestinian refugee camp. Walaa is determined to become one of the few women on the Palestinian Security Forces, and the film follows her as she changes from young troublemaker to focussed adult, navigating multiple obstacles and finally disproving the negative predictions from her surroundings - and the world at large. In this episode, Christy Garland unfolds the filming process in the Palestinian West Bank territory; how she first met Walaa and decided to follow her through pivotal life moments, police academy training, imprisonment, and return to the impoverished Balata refugee camp after becoming a trained police woman. She and Jake further discuss Christy's thoughts on being closely involved with the subjects of her films while following their unique journeys, her inspirations and wider views on documentary storytelling. What Walaa Wants, 2018, directed by Christy Garland, produced by Murmur Media, Final Cut for Real In Co-production with National Film Board of Canada. *Christy refers at one point to the documentary Titicut Follies from 1967 by Frederick Wiseman. Now, I could overwhelm you with all the experience, the expertise, I have accumulated over 30 plus years because I know if you could just know everything I want to share about what it takes to Build The Successful Business YOU WANT you’ll succeed. And in a nano-second, I will lose you. I can rattle off how to use your expertise to Attract clients, Attain those that are top notch clients, how you can step by step Retain them and have life- long base of clients, How you can figure out bio-individual self care using the expertise you already have, how to use specific exercises to alleviate 80% of the back issues clients bring you, rebuild, gut flora, find good testing, use Cell salts, Bach, EFT, Address Prenatal, Postnatal, infant, geriatric, chronic conditions, food intolerances, environmental toxins,… how Building Your Wellness Business goes through 2 business phases to succeed…you see my list of what I want you to know so you can be successful is already overwhelming AND it mistakenly comes across as you thinking you need to have all this knowledge to Build The Wellness Business You WANT when in reality a minutiae of the information is all you need to get started. My 3+ decades in the wellness business have taught me that dumping a MOUNTAIN of information doesn’t help you it actually can have you running for the hills! (Ok ya gotta admit this whole mo-hill, mountains and hills thing is kinda funny)   If I instead use the technique of creating that MOUNTAIN by slowly making it out of mo-hills we both win! Instead of you standing at the bottom of a huge information mountain thinking to yourself “SHUCKS!” (or something like it) “How the “FLIP’ (or something like it ) am I gonna do all that! I don’t have time for what I am trying to accomplish NOW!” I would not empower you by dumping my Mountain of INFO. My Mountain of helpful info is keeping you from making your next best move. HAD I instead used restraint, pulled with laser focus the best piece of information I could from my expertise and presented it to you with an action step that empowered you (that would be my mo-hill of information) ultimately when pieced together with the other mo-hills you would successfully be building your mountain! Walaa! Your goal to Build a Wellness Business You WANT becomes a reality because you kept taking your best next step. served and my goals to help you build that wellness business is served. The mo-hills of information served your goals and my goal as well to help you build that wellness business you want. Your accomplishment of stepping up onto and conquering the first mo-hill leaves you with the experience of success…  Success begets success and you want more are willing to do the work for it because you know it is paying off.   Ultimately when you build your mountain out of those mo-hills you make it to the top way faster than if you keep stopping with overwhelm. WIN WIN! Any of you who already know me THAT is what it is about double and even triple WINS!.   OK. Let’s review two things you must have to Build The Wellness Business You WANT. You Need to have systems I place for the 2 Phases of Building The Wellness Business You WANT. Phase 1 the Establishment Phase and Phase 2 the Expansion Phase. You must have the Processes to use your integrative wellness expertise on the bio-individual CELL’f Care level, so Your Client Attains the wellness they Want. Let’s address how Making a Mountian out of Mo-hills works there. When we start out with clients who want and need what we offer we are in the same beginning situation as above. The client is the one who WANTS WELLNESS they see you have what they WANT and you, of course, want to help them right away so you SHARE everything you can pack into your first Session sometimes for FREE! And then you wonder why they never returned right? Well, now you know where they are — running for the hills! Yes in your nanosecond moment you plopped a mountain right in front of them and told them how great it is to arrive at the top. That I have learned the hard way is NOT helpful. That is why they are running (for the hills) they have no way to imagine even in their wildest dreams how they should make that happen EVEN if you tell them how it is going to bring them to their goal and break it into baby steps. It is still a mountain you plopped! We want to make the mountain they want to climb out of the molehills! To successfully do this we need to use a few processes.   The first process is what I call S.T.O.P. All my major breakthroughs in my wellness and my wellness business came from starting with STOP. S is for STOPPING. Just STOP taking in new information. T is for Thinking things through, Taking stock. O is for Organizing those thoughts. P is for planning the process I use STOP today. When I shifted from working with clients to working with practitioners, it was a 3-year transition. I kept STOPPING to re-group, seek help and choose molehills I believed I could make my mountain out of. It saved my sanity and slowly lead me here to today working with you. You can come back for the other processes once you’ve mastered this mo-hill Stop 2.Think through writing down your personal health journey, all the detailed twists, turns, revelations, setbacks, frustrations, moments of euphoria that lead you to become the integrated wellness professional you are. Organize it. Use three columns or 3 highlighters to tag what worked for you what did not. The 3rd for highlighting spots of transformation. Plan. Plan out what mole hill moment/technique that worked/ones that didn’t you will share with the client you will be seeing. Refer to this list often they are nuggets of gold for helping your clients.   This same structure helps clients that most as well. Have them work through STOP with you… Stop. Stop taking more new health plans, packages, fads, information in. Think things through. Write down their entire health history as far back as the can remember. Then where they are now, all the items about their body, they want to change and what they want to accomplish. As well as all the things they have tried, people they have worked with, groups, etc… Organize those items they have tried, and those they are still using. Then use three columns or 3 highlighters to tag what is working, what is not. The 3rd for highlighting areas where things shifted and became more frustrating or improved in their opinion. Plan. Have time to review this wonderful work your client has put forth and then together at your next session: Plan together what mole hill moment/technique you will share with the client beginning their molehills into MOUNTAIN path to success with you! And that my friends are the why and how Making Mountains outta mo-hills should be part of Building the wellness Business you want!
