In this week's episode, we are going to be looking at “Bullshido,” a catch-all term for martial arts practices that are either fake, delusional, or just plain useless. This is the land of no-touch knockouts, touches of death, and mystical masters who can't manage their own lives. We'll be asking the question—should you learn self-defense from summon who struggles with basic reality? Spoiler, the answer is no, no you shouldn't. This is a fun one, y'all. Nobody dies, and everybody is an absolute goober. Back in the summer of 2022, Justin read this Iron Fist and Sons of the Tiger story without reading the trio's Deadly Hands run from the beginning. Now with a new perspective, he reviews the issue once again! Issue Covered: Deadly Hands of Kung Fu #18
Spiky hair everywhere! In FFVII remake, that's delightful! In a Deadpool comic? Ehhh... Also, the summer's big crossover, Gang War... happened. Will comics: Daredevil: Gang War, Luke Cage: Gang War, Miles Morales: Spider-Man by Cody Ziglar vol 3: Gang War, Amazing Spider-Man by Zeb Wells vol 9: Gang War, Deadly Hands of Kung Fu: Gang War, and Spider-Woman by Steve Foxe vol 1: Gang War. Steve comics: Deadpool vol 3 #65-69, Wolverine vol 2 #177-180, Sabretooth: Mary Shelly Overdrive #1-4.
Episode 13 - Murdock and Marvel: 1975 It's 1975. Things are improving a bit in the world but in comics the race continues to fill up newsstands. With that, we start seeing more company causalities if you weren't D.C. or Marvel. We have 2 comic gods duking it out in the rookie of the year and in the spotlight this week, we see Daredevil take on... A comic book character!?!?! Preshow Recap of Dan and Sienna's C2E2 and their panel The Year in Comics The Big Stories Industry Trends 1975 Top 10 comics The Year in Marvel Average of about 40 comics per month published, for a total of 474. Most were in the Marvel Universe. Tons of new titles, and also tons of cancellations. They were trying for new markets and new readers. New Titles (and lots of reprints) Series Ending New Characters Big Moments Who's in the Bullpen ROOKIE OF THE YEAR: John Byrne The Year in Daredevil Appearances: Daredevil #117-128, Deadly Hands of Kung Fu #8, Giant-Size Defenders #3, Thor #233, Defenders #24-25 A number of writers worked on Daredevil this year: Starting with Chris Claremont and Steve Gerber in 117, Gerry Conway in 118, Tony Isabella in 119-122, Len Wein and Marv Wolfman in 124. Marv Wolfman finished the year as writer. William Robert (Bob) Brown provides art for most of those and is joined by Klaus Jansen starting with issue #124 The year starts with the Owl trying to steal Daredevils mind but he agrees to release him if Black Widow kidnaps someone – who turns out to be Shanna the She-Devil. The two women work together to trick the Owl and save Daredevil. Daredevil lost his billy club at the end of last year, but it returns thanks to Ivan Petrovich. Though Black Widow returns to San Francisco. Next Daredevil takes on the Circus of Crime and saves New York City from being hypnotized and lose all their money. Though one member – Blackwing gets away. Daredevil then sees Pop Fenton, his dad's old trainer, and attempts to save him and his former boxer – now priest – Father Gawaine from Juan Aponte who's been working with a doctor who's recreated Iron Man villain the Crusher strength formula. After the battle, he dies in Pop Fenton's arms. New Years arrives and Black Widow comes to visit and they attend a New Year's Eve party thrown by Foggy Nelson – though Widow isn't happy about it. Though it was for the best because agents of Hydra attack being led by El Jaguar. We learn they are after Foggy because SHIELD is intending to have him join their advisory committee. Eventually Foggy is captured by Hydra when Foggy gives himself up to save Black Widow from the Dreadnought. Black Widow and Daredevil scour the city looking for Foggy and end up fighting El Jaguar and Blackwing who turns out to be the son of Supreme Hydra – Silvermane – as Fury's forces head into a trap. They are able to avoid the trap with Life Model Decoys. In a final battle with Hydra, the Black Widow destroys the Dreadnought by shooting it in its only weak spot. Daredevil then goes up against Jackhammer and easily defeats him. El Jaguar is knocked out by Dum Dum Dugan, and Man-Killer is incapacitated when Ivan places a jamming device on her exoskeleton. With their plan failing, Blackwing and Silvermane make a hurried escape and the remaining Hydra agents are captured. Next Daredevil takes on Copperhead – a real life recreation of a 1930s comic book. This two book arc is this week's spotlight. A new Torpedo show up looking to complete an important mission but when he's killed during a battle with Daredevil, former pro quarterback Brock Jones takes the costume and wants to complete the mission. Those two then fight as Jones attempts to explain the mission. In the process they destroy the home of an innocent family. When the mother yells at them for the destruction, they stop fighting and leave. As the year ends, Murdock says he's done being Daredevil but it doesn't last long as he's needed to take on Death-Starker who's stealing artifacts from museums in an attempt to build a powerful weapon. In their final battle, Death-Stalker ends up disappearing while standing on a platform near a mysterious Sky-Walker. New Powers, Toys or Places New Supporting Characters New Villains This Week's Spotlight: Daredevil #124 Aug 1975 "In the Coils of the Copperhead!" and Daredevil #125 Sep 1975 “Vengeance Is the Copperhead!” Recap Why We Picked This Story The Takeaway Inmates running the asylum Questions or comments We'd love to hear from you! Email us at questions@comicsovertime.com or find us on Twitter @comicsoftime. ------------------ THANKS TO THE FOLLOWING CREATORS AND RESOURCES Music: Our theme music is by the very talented Lesfm. You can find more about them and their music at https://pixabay.com/users/lesfm-22579021/. The Grand Comics Database: Dan uses custom queries against a downloadable copy of the GCD to construct his publisher, title and creator charts. Comichron: Our source for comic book sales data. Man Without Fear: Kuljit Mithra's Daredevil site contains a staggering collection of resources about our hero, including news, interviews and comic details. The American Comic Book Chronicles: Published by TwoMorrows, these volumes provide an excellent analysis of American comics through the years. Because these volumes break down comic history by year and decade they are a great place to get a basic orientation on what is happening across the comic industry at a particular point in time. Joshua and Jamie Do Daredevil: A fantastic podcast that does a deep-dive into Daredevil comics. This ran from 2018-2020, and covered most of the first volume of Daredevil, and was a fun way to get an in-depth look at each issue of Daredevil from 1-377. My Marvelous Year: This is a reading-club style podcast where Dave Buesing and friends chose important or interesting books from a particular year to read and discuss. This helped me remember some fun and crazy stories, and would be a great companion piece to Murdock and Marvel for those who want more comic-story-specific coverage. BOOKLIST The following books have been frequently used as reference while preparing summaries of the comic history segments of our show. Each and every one comes recommended by Dan for fans wanting to read more about it! Licari, Fabio and Marco Rizzo. Marvel: The First 80 Years: The True Story of a Pop-Culture Phenomenon. London: Titan Books, 2020. This book is sort of a mess, as the print quality is terrible, and Titan doesn't even credit the authors unless you check the fine print. It's like this was published by Marvel in the early 60s! But the information is good, and it is presented in an entertaining fashion. So its decent, but I would recommend you see if you can just borrow it from the library instead of purchasing. Wells, John. American Comic Book Chronicles: 1960-1964. Raleigh: Two Morrows, 2015. Not cheap, but a fantastic series that is informative and fun to read. Wright, Bradford. Comic Book Nation: The Transformation of Youth Culture in America. Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press, 2001. This is the revised edition. Marvel Year By Year: A Visual History. New York: DK Publishing, 2022. The academic in my rails at using information from any work that doesn't have an author credit, but this is a decent (if very surface) look at each year in the history of Timely / Marvel from 1939 to 2021. Cowsill, Alan et al. DC Comics Year by Year: A Visual History. New York: DK Publishing, 2010. Because its nice to occasionally take a peek at what the Distinguished Competition is up to. Dauber, Jeremy. American Comics: A History. New York, W.W. Norton & Company, 2022. An excellent, relatively compact history of the domestic comic industry from its 19th century origins through to recent 21st century developments. An excellent successor to Bradford Wright's Comic Book Nation.

Captain America (1981-1984) Part 2 Captain America 265-266 By David Anthony Kraft, Mike Zeck, John Beatty Cap teams up with Spider-Man and Nick Fury to battle SULTAN Jack of Hearts (1984) Limited Series By Bill Mantlo, George Freeman (with a little help on the inking from Eduardo Barreto and Hilary on the final issue) Comic Collection Analysis - Silver Age comic books What I Bought - House of Mystery 127, The Unexpected 107 Links --- Editor’s Notes: 1. It isn’t mentioned in the podcast but the Captain America story was also included in the Captain America Epic Collection: Dawn’s Early Light. 2. The Captain America story was 36 years old at the time this podcast was recorded. It is incorrectly referred to as being 16 or 17 years old in the podcast. 3. Jack of Hearts first appeared in Deadly Hands of King-Fu 22 (Mar 1976). His earliest appearances, in Deadly Hands of Kung Fu (22-24, 26, 29-32), were reprinted in 2017 in the Deadly Hands of Kung Fu Omnibus Vol. 2. 4. There is one page in Mantlo: A Life in Comics dedicated to the Jack of Hearts. It didn’t really shed any new light on the history of the Jack of Hearts. He is compared to Rocket Raccoon who at the time the article was written (2007) had mostly been forgotten compared to the Jack of Hearts who went on to become a member of the Avengers (2000-2004). Rocket Raccoon made a comeback in late 2007 along with the new version of the Guardians of the Galaxy and has appeared regularly ever since in Marvel Comics. The crew talk about "The Dragon Lives Again" also known as "Deadly Hands of Kung Fu", a martial arts fantasy comedy in which the soul of Bruce Lee (played by Bruce Leung) goes to the Underworld. The deceased Lee meets a number of pop-culture icons, including Dracula, James Bond, Zatoichi, Clint Eastwood, The Godfather, Laurel and Hardy, The Exorcist, and even 1970s soft-porn character Emmanuelle. Lee befriends The One-Armed Swordsman, Caine from TV's Kung Fu, and Popeye. The film begins with the announcement, "This film is dedicated to millions who love Bruce Lee." Hosted on Acast. The second half of The Bruce Lee Story from a very special all-Bruce Lee issue of Deadly Hands of Kung Fu Magazine (1976). Afterwards I read an article about the beginnings of the merging of the martial arts industry and the stuntwork industry as "kung fu" films began their ascent to mainstream. That article may or may not be interesting, but Bruce Lee never fails to be.
The gang is back from a long hiatus to talk about kung fu, racial stereotypes, and fridge-grown science experiments. Start and end theme is "Neurosis of the Liver" by Cullah.
Things get started out with Doc and VF’s attempt to get to the bottom of Nickel’s curious twitter activity leading up to Episode 30. Grease-stained pants almost bring an end to a 7-year relationship, Doc goes camping, and VF discovers the internets and re-kindles his love of He-Man, and after all that gets discussed in detail, we eventually discuss comics. If you want to know why Graphic Novice never has guests from the comic book industry, listen to the comic news segment preceding Rapid-Fire Review. After alienating more listeners and potential listeners, the guys discuss Batman and Robin 34, Batman Eternal #20, Teen Titans #2, Dark Engine #2, The Fade Out #1, Manifest Destiny #9, Peter Panzerfaust #20, Protectors Inc. #8, Supreme Blue Rose #2, Trees #4, The Wicked + The Divine #3, All-New X-Factor #12, Deadly Hands of Kung-Fu #4, Magneto #8, New Avengers #23, Nova #20, Storm #2, and Grimm Fairly Tales Presents Robyn Hood #1. The rest of the show segments get postponed due to time, and Doc promises to add some articles to the GraphicNovice.com website. The show wraps up with a summary of the books we’ll be reading from the August 27, 2014 release date. We get in under 2.5 hours in what might be our last episode prior to some sweeping format changes. Spoiler: We’re not actually going to change anything.
Its our anniversary show, and we're celebrating with almost 3 more hours of what we do best around here... or at least what we do a lot of around here... talking comics and stuff. Hydra ponies up some cash to sponsor the big anniversary show (finally helping us to pay some bills) and sneaks in some thought provoking propoganda before a new version of our favorite theme song, Baked Beans, peppered with some of our favorite moments from the first 24 episodes. Hail Hydra! And, after all that, we do eventually record a show... We announce our disdain for Dr. Who, Doc screws up the special anniversary guest booking, and the guys talk about Lady Thor, the death of Archie, our network expense checks and the return of the "Back Issue Review". Before Nickel finally satisfies the listeners' demands, and revives the back Issue Review with a discussion of Fantastic Four #3, we take a look at some of the comics from July 9, 2014 during the aptly named "Rapid-Fire Review" segment. The books this week include Lumberjanes #4, Batman Eternal #14, Detective Comics #33, Grayson #1, Justice League United #3, '68 Rule of War #4 (of 4), Spread #1, All-New X-Men #29, Amazing Spider-Man #1.3, and Amazing X-Men #9, Avengers #32, Deadly Hands of Kung-Fu #3 (of 4), Fantastic Four #7, Nightcrawler #4, Original Sin #5.1, Spider-Man 2099 #1, United States of Murder Inc. #3, Winter Soldier the Bitter March #5 (of 5), Wolverine #10, X-Force #7, Rai #3, Grimm Fairy Tales #99, and Grimm Fairy Tales Presents Robyn Hood Legend #5 (of 5). After chosing out books of the week, and trying out Doc's new scoring system, we get to an abbreviated version of Back-Issue Review, and wrap things up with a look ahead to the books coming out on July 16th and an important message about cyberbullying. Thanks to everyone who has checked out our unorthodox podcast during the first 25 episodes... and Hail Hydra!
The crew chats about Deadly Hands of Kung Fu, Superior Foes of Spider-Man and Winter Soldier: The Bitter March as they take your questions, give you the latest Marvel news and much more!
We lead off with the trailer for our upcoming movie and show off the acting talents of our very own VF. Off air, Doc attempts to whip us into shape, demanding that we trim the fat and try to keep the show to under 2 hours... did we succeed... listen and find out. We try to make up for the short running time with our longest title to date. We spend a little bit less time talking about nothing before getting to our "Rapid-Fire Review Segment", where we discuss Crossed Badlands #55, Lumberjanes #3, Batman Eternal #10, Detective Comics #32, Justice League United #2, United States of Murder #2, Wraith Welcome To Christmasland #7, Manifest Destiny #7, Starlight #4, All-New X-Men #28, Amazing Spider-Man #1.2, Deadly Hands of Kung-Fu #2, Hulk #4, New Avengers #19, Nightcrawler #3, Original Sins #1, She-Hulk #5, Wolverine #8, Uncanny and the X-Men Special #1. Doc tells us about his trip to the Superman Festival in Metropolis Illinois, we read a letter from friend of the show Brian Kearns, and we wrap it all up by taking a look at the books being released on June 18. At various points throughout the show we mix is some Scott Summers discussion, talk about some DC bombshell covers, and Nickel polishes off an entire growler of non-alcoholic beer. We also prepare for next week's Walking Dead segment, and provide another helpful public service announcement about sex.

The hosts of Graphic Novice have to travel back in time to record this episode in sequential order, and keep the podcast on track. Journey back with the guys to a simpler time, May 21 2014 to be exact, and enjoy a trip down memory lane as we slowly and gradually discuss the comics we read way back in the dog days of May, including Afterlife With Archie #5, Lumberjanes #2, Batman Eternal #6, Wraith Welcome to Christmasland #6, Starlight #3, All-New Ghost Rider #3, All-New X-Men #27, Avengers #29, Captain America #20, Deadly Hands of Kung Fu #1, Fantastic Four #4, New Avengers #18, Nightcrawler #2, United States of Murder Inc. #1, Wolverine #6, X-Force #5, Manifest Destiny TPB 1. While visiting the past, we also spend some time on the big comic book movies currently in the theatres, and discuss Nickel's most embarrassing guilty pleasure. We've cut down on the singing, but added a whole bunch of time travel.
