We're back for part two of our Discover series on the less travelled, but adventure-rich state of South Australia. Our Discover Guides are deep dives into new destinations, where we interview experts to get the ‘drum' on the places they live and love. This series is produced as a road trip through a lesser-known part of Australia filled with natural wonders, wildlife and more than one hilarious Aussie character. And don't miss our sweet promo offering from Down Under Endeavors: $500 off your trip for Armchair Explorer listeners. Go to: downunderendeavours.com/armchair Pop in code ARMCHAIR25 to score a discount on your Australian adventure Down Under. We'll start in Boston Bay with 'Lunch,' a former grain-farmer and sheep shearer that now herds visitors. He'll fill us in on the fish, non-fish, fishy food and fish-eating non-food fish of the seafood frontier. I'll also (possibly) earn a nickname as cool as 'Lunch,' (tune in and find out). Then we're heading back up the coastline towards Adelaide and wine country with possibly the most well-traveled sommelier on the planet: he's solo hiked the Himalayas, led night dives in the Caribbean, armies of scouts in the bush and expeditions in the jungle. And on top of all that, he knows his swirls from his sips and his grenache from his grapes. He's Matthew Kurko, and he's not too proud to enjoy a porch pounder. Finally we're sharing our first 'Dream Sleep' segment, where we explore stays that aren't just a place to spend the night, but an experience all their own. The Frames is built right against the Murray River, which forms on the edge of the Australian Alps and travels 1500 miles to the Limestone Coast. As owners Cathy and Rick Edmonds say, you'll meet the real Australia here, in conversation with locals, drifting the river on a flavor safari, or diving right into the Outback itself. So fair dinkum, no worries mate it's time to hit the frog and toad! Thank you to Down Under Endeavours for partnering with us on this episode. They are the South Australia experts and helped us build this itinerary and connect with the experts featured in the episode. They're offering an exclusive deal to Armchair Explorer listeners: $500 off your adventure. Just go to: downunderendeavours.com/armchair Pop in code ARMCHAIR25 to score a discount on your Australian adventure Down Under. You can find out more and literally book our exact trip, with these exact guides on their website as well. Interview by Kris PetersThe global musical landscape shifted forever in 2001, with the release of Ill Nino's debut album, Revolution Revolución. It introduced the world to a fusion of metal and Latino-influenced brutality that gave birth to a new movement of metal that still exists in some form today. It was an experimental and daring album from a group of musicians from New Jersey who decided to combine their culture with their music and introduced the world to a band who give no quarter and have remained steadfast despite well publicized internal battles. It says much for the scope and vision of founding vocalist Dave Chavarrí, who has reassembled his dream numerous times over in search of the perfect formula. To showcase the new-look line up - and reportedly the best yet - the band are paying their first visit Down Under in eight years this September, intent on pummelling their Australian fans into musical submission.Chavarri joined HEAVY earlier this week to fill us in on the blanks."Wait until you see the new band and the new line-up," he declared straight off the bat. "We're going to fucking crush Australia, man. People ain't going to be ready for this shit right now."We ask Chavarri what has changed with Ill Nino in the eight years between visits."We have a new singer now," he replied. "We are going to release a new track and a new video and song next month, and it's from the new album that we're starting to record next week. The new album is fucking insane. It's the best thing that we've done since Revolution Revolución, I feel. And yeah, wait till you see the band live. We're in the best shape of our lives physically - the entire band - mentally and spiritually. We're firing all cylinders right now, and we just can't wait to come and fuck shit up."In the full interview, Dave spoke more about the new line-up and new song, Ill Nino's live show and what makes it so brutal, bringing Adema as touring partners, and his love for Australian crowds. He reflected on the band's evolution, influenced by his Latin music upbringing, and shared his commitment to Ill Nino despite past challenges, including member changes and conflicts. He noted recent reconciliations with former members Christian and Marcos, emphasizing a newfound positivity and supportive environment within the band. We spoke about what keeps driving him despite the setbacks, and his need to have the band and music in his life.We touched on the new material and what direction it will take, when it might come out and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.
A quick catch-up with Napier Port’s CEO Todd Dawson reveals never a dull moment. Autonomous trucks and dredging to deepen shipping channels are just some of the things on the back of a strong half-year profit result. Increased container volumes and an earlier pipfruit season has helped boost the numbers. We hear how investors have been rewarded with a special dividend—on top of a higher interim dividend of 4c—and why cruise ships are less keen to come Down Under. Rock royalty took over Sydney! In this episode of Triple M Gig Reviews, Row recaps an electrifying night at ICC Sydney Theatre as ZZ Top brought their Texas blues swagger Down Under on May 13, 2025. With George Thorogood & The Destroyers in tow as the perfect warm-up act, the night was a masterclass in grit, groove, and guitar. From Thorogood’s rowdy renditions of Who Do You Love and Bad to the Bone, to Billy Gibbons and Elwood Francis lighting up the stage with Got Me Under Pressure, Gimme All Your Lovin’, and Sharp Dressed Man, it was wall-to-wall classics. Elwood Francis stepped up to honour Dusty Hill’s legacy on bass with serious style and serious beard, while John Douglas filled in on drums for Frank Beard with rock-solid precision. The night wrapped with an explosive performance of La Grange, leaving the crowd howling for more. It’s been over 50 years, but ZZ Top still proves they’ve got that old-school swagger — no gimmicks, no fluff, just vintage Texas rock at its finest. If you missed it, this gig review is your backstage pass to one of the coolest shows of the year.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Scientists in Australia just discovered a huge Megaraptor, and it's a total game-changer. This dinosaur had massive claws and was way bigger than anyone thought lived there during that time. Before, most people believed Australia didn't have giant predatory dinosaurs like the ones found in other parts of the world. But this Megaraptor proves that ferocious, massive hunters were roaming the ancient Aussie landscape too. It also hints that Australia's dinosaur history is way more connected to South America and Antarctica than we realized. Basically, everything we thought we knew about dinosaurs Down Under just got flipped! You might remember Ashley Kalagian Blunt from the previous episode, “Down Under”. In this episode, I talk to Ashley about her academic work on the Armenian Genocide and genocides in general. In her novella, ‘My Name is Revenge', she uses the tale of Simpson and His Donkey as a way of understanding different viewpoints of history.Given this week is ANZAC Day, I invited her on the show to talk about the links between the ANZAC invasion of Gallipoli and the links to the Armenian Genocide.Ashley highlights the parallels between the Armenian Genocide and the Holocaust. We also discuss the Armenian Diaspora, the influence of Armenian language and culture, and the importance of recognising historical atrocities to prevent future genocides.Genocide is a feature of human history and Australian history is not immune from that. We talk about the Tasmanian genocide, The Conquest of the Desert, The Armenian Genocide and the Holocaust, as well as genocides currently occurring. We discuss what they have in common and what are some of the features of these inhumane events. We leave with commentary about what we can possibly do to make this world a safer and more positive place, using Simpson and His Donkey as an example. If you would like a transcript for this episode, find all content and have a say in the creative process, think about becoming a patron:patreon.com/AustraliansTeachEnglishOr check out my other podcast - IELTS in the Sun - the podcast to help you prepare your English exam: https://open.spotify.com/show/7wVfUn2wKiQxlE47vLudmc?si=VWsuUzo-T4esfb1KnjW3aA
It's been Onya's season to win since she walked into the workroom in that vest, but this finale had us a bit nervous. Sam's red carpet and Lexi's rollerskates left them both primed for an All Stars comeback, and Crystal winning Miss Congeniality mayo feel righty real! But it all came down to the burger queen of Cleveland vs Tampa's answer to Tracee Ellis Ross. Abracadabra may not have been a magical lip sync for either of them, but some seasons it does just come down to track record. The final five roll the dice on the chance to join Drag Race LIVE! in Vegas, but first they need to do a pseudo TicTac lunch with Latrice and film a kiosk promo for an act we know nothing about and never see. We do get a Ru directed photo shoot, but it also feels 14 weeks late. Then it's coats and a cloche on the runway and two different Rosses on the panel. Jewels shines, Onya's nerve and Lexi's heart take them both to the finale, Sam is almost country fried and it's an 11th hour boot of ye old Susan Marie Toot. Hi friends, happy Wednesday! The other day I was invited to a bachelorette party. And it wasn't one of those simple, one day parties. NO. This was going to be an all-out, wild, expensive bachelorette weekend in… the city of Las Vegas. And I knew exactly what was going to happen. The shots. Thunder from Down Under. $300 dinners. No sleep. And I'm like… why is everyone obsessed with going to this random, expensive city in the middle of the desert? Don't get me wrong… I love Vegas. But it's kind of surprising that it's still around. I mean, if you think about it, Vegas has almost been canceled over and over and over again. I mean there was the mob, the recession, covid, inflation… but Vegas *always* seems to find a way to survive. And I had to get to the bottom of why. So join me on this journey as we discuss The Dark History of… Las Vegas. I appreciate you for coming by, and tune in next week for more Dark History. I sometimes talk about my Good Reads in the show.
